Not Just Another Brick in the Wall By Beverly Perkins

ometimes you must take things into your own hands to make something happen, and this is just what longtime Plantation resident did. Judy Ackerman was (and still is) an involved citizen of the community. She is known around town for selling real estate, but she is also involved with the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC) and became the Chairwoman of Beautification for the nonprofit organization. In the early 90s Ackerman watched an abundance of beautiful new developments pop up all over the city. This sparked her attention as she wanted to see the “older” suburbs of Plantation enhanced just the same. The ambitious realtor shared her thoughts at that time with Councilwoman Rae Carole Armstrong who encouraged her to pursue that dream and supported and advised her all along the way. “Why can’t we have beautiful entrance walls along Broward Boulevard to enhance the older neighborhoods. Broward Boulevard was looking shabby with fallen fences and dying landscape,” explained Ackerman. “Newer communities had such grand entrances and I wanted ours showcased and not neglected.” At that time, Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk was

raising money through selling bricks engraved with names and messages, so the ambitious and determined realtor thought she should and could do the same. She presented the idea to other council members and Mayor Veltri who agreed if she could raise the funds, the City would go 50/50. It was full speed ahead as she shared the news with neighbors and the PJWC, delivered brochures, and sold engraved bricks to commemorate anniversaries, birthdays, and memories. Through the efforts and support of the community, she raised $20,000 almost immediately. “It is because of the organized efforts and ideas such as this that help make Plantation the beautiful city that it is today and will continue to be in the future,” said Jeffrey Siegel, ASLA, Landscape Architect. Ackerman worked diligently with the City Architect, the City Landscaper, contractors, and the city council to accomplish her goal. It took over three years to complete construction and the stately brick entrance walls were finally finished and accented with black coach lights to highlight the quiet older communities on the east side of Plantation.

Wings of Love – MIRROR LAKE ELEMENTARY NEVER FORGETS

irror Lake Elementary recently honored the memory of the lives lost in the Holocaust during “Holocaust Education Week”. The remembrance is held annually the second week of November which coincides with the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Also known as“Night of Broken Glass”, the major turning point in the persecution of European Jews by the Nazi regime occurred November 9-10, 1938. The Commissioner’s Task Force on Holocaust Education sent a variety of resources to assist K-12 educators in structuring their Holocaust Education Week lessons. In addition to providing these resources to educate students about the Holocaust, Principal Mrs. Marlen Veliz, set up a display in the teacher workroom to show her gratitude to their commitment to not only educate about historical facts but to teach students how to treat and care for each other. She gave all her teachers and staff butterfly heart bookmarks as another token of appreciation.

“We have bookmarks in the workroom with a butterfly inside a heart to represent the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust and to thank you for your commitment to educating our children about tolerance, acceptance, and love for each other,” expressed Principal Veliz. She also asked teachers to have their students create butterflies and read the poem ‘The Butterfly’ by Pavel Friedman. The beautifully written poem gives a voice to those that perished in the Holocaust. “…That butterfly was the last one. Butterflies don’t live here in the ghetto.” Besides the poem, a sample of butterfly artwork from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum was posted in the hallway outside the guidance counselor’s office. The artwork on display was created by 1st and 2nd graders from a Jewish school in Vienna, Austria before the teacher, Gertrude Winter, and nearly all her students were deported and killed in the

Holocaust. Winter saved these drawings, and they were preserved and replicated on cards to preserve the spirit and memory of these children who lost their lives in the Holocaust.

eel pain in active adults is most commonly related to having “the worse pain levels when walking first thing in the morning or after long periods of sitting.” It is essential to quickly care for and treat heel pain to avoid further misalignments and complications. While several factors may be in play when it comes to heel pain, they can only be correctly diagnosed by a foot and ankle specialist. Runners with heel pain typically complain of arch pain, pain on the bottom of the heel, swelling on the bottom of the heel, and sometimes even bruising if symptoms are severe. If arch pain persists beyond a few days, treatment is needed to prevent the condition from becomFig: 1 ing worse. The most common cause of heel pain is a condition known as plantar fasciitis (Fig.1). Plantar fasciitis occurs secondary to one wearing non-supportive footwear on hard surfaces, overuse/

increased activity, improper training habits, and even possibly a faulty foot structure (flatfeet). Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain. Another cause of heel pain commonly seen in runners is a calcaneal stress fracture (Fig. 2). If not treated appropriately prolonged symptoms of heel pain (generalized pain in the heel area that develops slowly (over several days to weeks)) will be experienced, including noticeable redness, swelling, and bruising to the areas of the heel bone. Treatment efforts plantar fasciitis such as stretching, limiting activity, shoe modifications/ orthotics, oral medications/steroid injections, night splints, taping/strapping, physical therapy, stretching exercises (plantar fascia/Achilles tendon), and simply avoiding barefoot walking can all help relieve pain symptoms. Although a relatively small amount of patients will require surgical intervention, your foot and ankle surgeon can discuss the most appropriate surgical treatment if necessary. Surgical treatment for chronic cases include percutaneous Platelet Rich Plasma injections, Topaz Coblation therapy, extra corporal shockwave therapy, and endoscopic plantar fasciotomies.

If diagnosed with a stress fracture of the heel bone, treatment will include rest and immobilization of the effected foot. Stress fractures in the heel bone occur mostly due to overuse injuries or an underlying issue related to bone quality/bone mass (osteoporosis). A foot and ankle specialists can utilize diagnostic imaging to appropriately diagnose and treat the stress fracture. In some cases, surgery may be required to stabilize the stress fracture or to repair a stress fracture that has progressed to a complete bone fracture. To prevent heel pain, it’s key for active individuals to run on soft surfaces, keep mileage increases to less than 10 percent per week, and wear the proper shoes for your foot type and gait.

PROBATE AVOIDANCE

eath is inevitable but probate is not. This month’s column will explore what probate is and how to avoid it. What is Probate? Probate is a public lawsuit processed through the court system available to view by all who are curious, a court-supervised administration of debts and assets of a decedent (dead person). Each state has its own laws and procedures for probate, but most share several common elements. Judicial review of a will to be sure it was prepared in a legally sufficient manner; inventory of all assets and creditors; publishing a newspaper “Notice to Creditors” so creditors can file claims against estate assets; orderly prioritization of claims for payment; and accounting of assets and expenses of administration. Finally, there is the distribution of remaining assets to beneficiaries according to instructions in the will (or if no will, pursuant to state laws of intestate succession). Why Avoid Probate? It is expensive. Florida requires an attorney’s participation, and we know that attorneys cost money. Per statute, a reasonable fee for a simple probate is up to 3% of the value of all assets being administered. It is time consuming. Most probates often take 8 to 16 months during which time bank accounts are frozen, and assets may not be sold or distributed without permission from the Court. Add minor children, ownership of a business, substantial creditor claims, or unhappy beneficiaries, and these timeframes can easily double. How to Avoid Probate? If you have a simple straightforward plan to distribute assets after death, you can avoid probate by titling your assets so that they transfer automatically upon your death. Owning assets jointly with others, or with “TOD” (transfer on death) designations can avoid the need for probate. Also, being sure that insurance and retirement assets have beneficiaries and successor beneficiaries named is key. When probate avoidance alone is not sufficient to address your planning objectives, a revocable living trust (RLT) may be the right solution. Situations, such as with blended families, young or immature beneficiaries, or where concerns about creditors or remarriages require a more nuanced management of things after death, an RLT offers an excellent solution. These challenges can be addressed while also avoiding probate. Creating an RLT is more complex and therefore more expensive than just creating a will but offers enormous benefits in addition to saving the costs and length of the probate process. Not only can probate be avoided, but assets can be transferred in a way so that the beneficiary’s creditors, or divorcing spouse, cannot access the inherited assets. The RLT is also a perfect vehicle to manage assets for the benefit of young children or grandchildren or to keep the management of an ongoing business in the control of chosen and experienced hands. Meet with an experienced attorney who specializes in estate planning. Share your goals and concerns with the attorney. Listen carefully to the choices and solutions offered. Make a plan that is right for you. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
