A Decade of Love from the Mayor BY BEVERLY PERKINS

or ten years, the annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day has been the most anticipated summer event in Pembroke Pines. Just about 1,000 children ages 15 and younger who reside throughout the City came out with their parents to participate in the fun celebratory day. The only pre-requisite was that they had to pre-register to receive a wristband. The much sought-after band enabled youngsters’ access to a variety of activities and surprises by the many local businesses and sponsors who support the decade-long event

in the city. These included finding deals and freebies such as free bowling, swimming, haircuts, ice cream, mini golf, cookies, breakfasts, discounts on purchases, food samples, raffles, and so much more. “This is a special day to honor our youngest residents,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “They get a chance to explore our great city by visiting participating businesses and then join me for lunch at City Hall and fun activities.” After the four-hour morning scavenger-like hunt around town, everyone met at the Charles F. Dodge City Center

where they were greeted by character mascots representing various city businesses, City Commissioners, and the Mayor himself. The eager group worked up quite the appetite before sitting down to lunch with Mayor Ortis where they indulged in classic kids’ favorites of either a hot dog or hamburger along with chips, cookies, healthy snacks, fruits and veggies. And of course, no celebration would be complete without cake! Also, during this time, the inquisitive children got to visit with local fire and police personnel and had a chance to enter the Bright Star Money Machine. Although the machine wasn’t filled with the real green currency, it was overflowing with play money labeled with prizes. The prizes varied from backpacks, hats, school supplies, stuffed animals, and toys as well as over $200 in gift cards. Hosted by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, of course,

and supported by numerous Pembroke Pines businesses, the dusk to dawn event had a total of seventy-seven sponsors, fifty-six businesses, and twenty-one vendors including Baptist Health South Florida, Brightstar Credit Union, Subway, Publix, American Pediatrics, Naidu Orthodontics, Publix and many more. “I got a chance to meet so many of our young residents who told me what a great time they were having. This event is a fantastic way for our community to get together, for our young people to get to know what our city offers, and for everyone to just have fun. West Broward Cadet Marches to Her Own Beat BY BEVERLY PERKINS

s the 2018-2019 school year came to a close, many award ceremonies took place including the much anticipated “Broward County Cadet of the Year”. Seven top students from Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high schools all vied for the coveted award and received scholarships valuing almost $10,000, but it was Cadet Colonel Gabriella Lopez from West Broward High School who was named with the illustrious title. The West Broward senior literally sets the bar high for herself every day. When she’s not in an ROTC uniform leading 340 students in the best JROTC program, she can usually be found in a costume dancing to a classical performance. The astute Battalion Commander says her two passions, ballet and JROTC, complement each other, and there is no doubt that this Bobcat commands respect on campus and on stage.

“In the dance world, I need to focus and be able to concentrate on my performance skills and being in front of an audience of people. The ROTC definitely helped with ballet and ballet has also instilled qualities I can use as a battalion commander,” explained Lopez. When entering as a freshman, Lopez described herself as quite timid and really shy and not knowing how

to be involved socially. Fast forward to after joining the program, and she has evolved into a role model to all. The position is a huge responsibility and her peers look up to her for support and advice. “It really makes no difference to us; a leader is a leader. Whether it’s a young lady or a young man, we like to put in whoever is qualified and she is certainly best qualified,” exclaimed

Lt. Col. Kenneth Merkel. The top well-rounded student credits the JROTC program for allowing herself to blossom into a mature confident adult with great communication and time management skills. Although she loves military, she plans on majoring in fine arts in college. “You want to have grace under pressure, to be able to not only stand above all these expectations, but to surpass them,” added Lopez. The Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) partnership between the United States Department of Defense and the Broward County School Board is completing its 46th year and has included more than 100,000 JROTC cadets. This school year, cadet enrollment in exceeded 7,000 students in JROTC programs sponsored by all four branches of the military. The District’s JROTC program is the largest in the nation, with JROTC in every traditional high school.

steoarthritis is a wearing out of the cartilage at the end of the bones that form a joint. The cartilage gives us smooth gliding joints and allows the joint to function without pain. When the cartilage wears down, bones start to rub against each other causing pain. Swelling and bone spurs develop around the joint as well. It is usually caused by injuries to the joint from trauma or from repetitive stress. Abnormal bone and joint position may also be present that may be hereditary in nature or acquired over time. Stiffness in the joint (foot or ankle) is almost always present. When getting up from sitting or when getting out of bed, there may be difficulty weightbearing. As one walks it may improve. Over time the stiffness lasts longer, and the joint starts to ache. There will be a chronic low-grade swelling to the joint that is affected and difficulty with certain exercises or shoe gear will also be present. There will be tenderness around the joint and

When conservative care fails, arthroscopic procedures may be necessary to remove any of the damaged tissue in the joint. Open procedures may also be needed if the joint is not accessible to arthroscopy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary on the joint itself to reposition the bones in the joint giving them better position, allowing more normal mobility. If arthritis is severe, joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary and will have a huge positive impact on one’s life, allowing the patient freedom of mobility to perform activities of daily living and also sports. Prognosis is good to excellent in almost all cases. pain with moving the joint. Difficulty running or being generally active because of the pain will also be present. Treatment is aimed at identifying the joint involved and reducing the inflammation. Oral or injectible medication will help to reduce some of the inflammation and proper shoe gear or orthotics may help to lessen the inflammation around the area. Physical therapy may be necessary to improve range of motion and stability.

divisions, focusing on active shooter and rapid response training. We have established a Threat Management Division and improved the way we gather intelligence and respond to potential threats. We now have cutting-edge technology to identify and investigate potentially dangerous threats to our community. An extension of that division is the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), which allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of important investigative information during a critical incident. We also have direct access to video surveillance systems that monitor nearly 10,000 cameras in all Broward County schools. Recently, BSO partnered with SaferWatch, an innovative mobile app that allows users to report non-emergency incidents and crime tips in real time directly to BSO. The app covers more than 440 public, charter and private schools in Broward County and gives students, parents and teachers the ability to submit photos, videos, audio files or text messages anonymously. The information is immediately sent to BSO for appropriate action. It also provides our law enforcement districts with the ability to communicate important real-time information directly with residents. Whether it’s a crime prevention tip, safety alert, traffic advisory or other important information, SaferWatch alerts will be sent directly to your mobile device for immediate notification. Navigating Through College Choices Just Got Easier BY LOURDES RODRIGUEZ

Is college on the radar in your household? When it comes to finding the right college fit, campus visits can help narrow down the selection. In-person tours are a helpful step in the college application process, particularly for students interested in competitive four-year schools. According to U.S. News & World Report: “Before choosing the best college to attend, it is important for students to test the waters. Making a college visit and touring the campus can be pivotal in a student’s decision.” In the Sunshine State, the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) in Gainesville, FL is set to host the newly developed NaviGATORing CALS program on two separate dates: September 6 and September 13. The program provides a full day of experiences on campus tailored to a student’s areas of interest. CALS is part of UF/IFAS, the agricultural, natural resources and life sciences division of the university. NaviGATORing CALS provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to shadow a CALS Ambassador, learn more about the college and the UF admissions process (both for freshmen and transfer students), sit in on classes related to their

major of interest, learn about numerous campus organizations and activities, and explore the unique majors, minors and professional development opportunities in CALS. “The NaviGATORing CALS program was designed to show prospective students what it’s like to live a day in the life of a CALS student,” said CALS Dean Elaine Turner. “With personalized schedules based on each participant’s subject area of interest, our tour attendees experience all UF and CALS have to offer. This includes how our more than 20 majors can assist in preparing them for a long-term career in health care, natural resources, sustainability, food systems, human wellbeing and agriculture industries.” It is important for students to know what they want to get out of a college experience before stepping on campus. Broward Schools Add 500 Security Personnel for New School Year BY JON DUKA

Kids may feel a bit safer at school this year, thanks to a massive increase in the number of security personnel at Broward County Public Schools. The district plans to almost double the number of security officers in the coming school year to about 1,250.

The new positions come as a result of increased property taxes, which were approved by voter referendum in 2018. 500 new security personnel will be added to the BCPS payroll. However, no new police or School Resource Officers. “There are significant vacancies in law enforce-

ment, I think about 300 in the county, so getting additional [school resource officers] wasn’t really feasible,” Superintendent Robert Runcie said at a recent meeting. The district will, instead, be adding armed and unarmed security people at virtually every school. In the wake of the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School, a plan was put in place to ensure that at least one armed police officer or security person would be present per 1,000 students at each school. In addition, the plan calls for doubling the number of unarmed security monitors at the schools. Many of the unarmed monitors will be working at the elementary and middle schools around the county. • School security personnel will include: • 197 Police Officers or Sheriff’s Deputies • 93 School Guardians, who will be armed • 196 management-level Security Specialists • 686 Unarmed Security Monitors In addition, there will be a number of security personnel that will not be assigned to a specific school. These people will function as a reserve force to fill-in for absences, sick days or vacation days from permanent staff.
