Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her father Bob, which thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance school, the Academy of Ballet Arts, practicing and perfecting her craft, and then earned both a degree in Dance from The Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. PARKLAND AMONG SAFEST CITIES IN FLORIDA

arkland is the third safest city in Florida according to Internet home safety website, safewise.com. Parkland was joined by fellow Broward County communities of Weston (number 2) and Cooper City (number 10). The safest city in Florida was the appropriately named city of Niceville, which is just outside of Fort Walton Beach.
Safewise reviews and sells home and internet security systems. The company claims its mission is to inspire people to embrace safety as a lifestyle, turn their homes into sanctuaries, and invest in their communities. They also conduct an impressive amount of research. The company’s website states, “We contextualize national crime and safety trends to show how they affect you and your neighborhood. We use this knowledge to examine safety and security products and find out whether they’re worth your time.” While Parkland is much safer than Florida at large, the state is doing
relatively well compared to the country as a whole. Violent crime rates in Florida have held steady for three years in a row, bucking a trend of increased violent crime nationally. Despite this fact, Floridians claimed to be more concerned about crime than Americans as a whole. Parkland’s violent crime rate was reported at 1.1 per 1,000 people for 2021 while property crime was reported at 7.1 crimes per 1,000 people. There are likely many factors affecting crime rates within communities including the relative affluence of residents, prevalence of alcohol and illicit drug use, and police presence and community outreach. The annual event is a favorite for all members of the family and this year’s July 4th celebration was no exception. he Florida Department of Education (FDOE) named Seema Naik, a fourth-grade teacher at Eagle Ridge Elementary School in Broward County, as a finalist for the 2023 Florida Teacher of the Year award. The announcement came during a surprise visit to Eagle Ridge Elementary School, with newly appointed Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. and Deputy Chancellor for Educator Quality Dr. Paul Burns imparting the honor. The Florida Teacher of the Year program recognizes excellence in teaching and celebrates outstanding professional educators in schools across the state. The 2023 Florida Teacher of the Year winner will be announced on July 14 in Orlando. “Seema Naik is a shining example of excellence in the classroom. Her passion for teaching science and STEM subjects is nothing short of inspiring,” said Incoming Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “It is my pleasure to congratulate Seema Naik for her selection as a 2023 Florida Teacher of the Year finalist.” “A persistent and caring teacher, Naik constantly supports her students and seeks to work with parents, school staff and her community to help children reach their highest potential,” said Superintendent Vickie Cartwright of Broward County Public Schools.
“In my experience as a school leader, there are only a few teachers I would consider to be a pioneer. It is clear in my mind that Seema Naik is a STEM pioneer in the education world. For the past 10 years, she has led our school in creating new STEM opportunities for our students,” said Lindsey Sierra, principal of Eagle Ridge Elementary School. Seema Naik is passionate about science and related topics, and she has opened the world of STEM and robotics to countless students. Mrs. Naik blends innovative project-based learning with research-based instructional strategies to motivate students and achieve success in the classroom. She also founded Eagle Ridge Elementary School’s first Robotics Club in 2017 and continues to lead it today. Her commitment to excellence, classroom performance and service to students is supported by an outstanding personal education journey, which includes a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree in environmental engineering and an Alternative Certification for Educators from the Teaching & Leadership Center at Florida Atlantic University. Five finalists were chosen for 2023 Teacher of the Year from nearly 185,000 public school teachers throughout the state. After each school
district selects its teacher of the year, a selection committee representing teachers, principals, parents and the business community reviews each district application on the basis of outstanding ability to teach and communicate knowledge of the subject taught, professional development, philosophy of teaching, and outstanding school and community service. The winner will serve for one year as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for Education. “My parents came here from Brazil with a dream to make a better future for our family. They came to the U.S. for opportunity – and this is what opportunity looks like, this is what the American dream looks like.” Foganholi is a design consultant who also works with the American Brazilian Coalition and is an active member of his church, Habitat for Humanity and the non-profit organization Feeding America. Foganholi earned certificates in marketing and business management from Florida Atlantic University. Foganholi’s term as a Broward County School Board member for District 5 runs through November 2022.

13 Local Schools Receive ‘A’ Grades

oral Springs and Parkland schools have a well-earned reputation as some of the best public and charter schools in Broward County. The 2022 Florida School Accountability Reports published by the Florida Department of Education confirm that reputation. 13 of the 23 schools that serve the Northwest area of Broward County received ‘A’ grades for the 2021-2022 school year. Seven schools received ‘B’ grades while Coral Springs Elementary and Parkside Elementary Schools received ‘C’ grades. Coral Springs High School was marked ‘I’. Each school is graded based on the components for which it has sufficient data. School grades provide an easily understandable way to measure the performance of a school. Parents and the general public can use the school grade and its components to understand how well each school is serving its students. Schools are graded A, B, C, D, or F.
COMPONENTS In 2021-22, a school’s grade may include up to eleven components. There are four achievement components, four learning gains
components, a middle school acceleration component, as well as components for graduation rate and college and career acceleration. Each component is worth up to 100 points in the overall calculation. The number of points earned for each component is added together and divided by the total number of available points to determine the percentage of points earned.

want to thank you, the residents of District 96 (soon to be District 95), for your continued support as I am honored and grateful to share with you that I have been re-elected (without opposition) to serve as your State Representative. This is a job that I take very seriously, with the residents of the district (which includes Coconut Creek, Margate, Parkland, and portions of Coral Springs) first and foremost in mind. As always, please reach out if I or my team may ever be of assistance. We are here to help wherever we can. Additionally, I am now working on legislation for the 2023 session. If you have ideas on legislation that you feel would make a positive difference, please send them my way. By starting early, I have the opportunity to do thorough research and vetting on potential legislation. Since we are limited to filing 6 or 7 bills per session, it’s important to do our homework and give the legislation the best chance of crossing the finish line. It is so hard to believe that the summer is already slowly coming to an end and that the school year is about to start up again. We are all looking forward to a great 2022-2023 school year! As we prepare to go back to school, the Florida Legislature approved a 14-day Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this year to help alleviate the cost of school supplies. The sales tax holiday takes place July 25 - August 7, 2022, and covers a whole range of Back-to-School supplies. For a full list of qualifying items, please visit www.floridarevenue.com. Broward Public School students return to school on August 16, while teachers, administration, and staff go back on August 9. As we head back to school, please be mindful of the school zones and look out for students crossing the road or riding bicycles to get to school. t is hard to believe we are already gearing up for another school year. To celebrate, families are invited to join us for our inaugural Back to School Bash ice skating event at the Panthers Ice Den on Friday, August 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free event is one of many interactive activities our Parks and Recreation Department hosts throughout the year in an effort to bring families together. For information about all of our city’s upcoming events, visit CoralSprings.gov/events. The 2022-2023 Coral Springs Neighborhood Schools Guide is now available to view either in print or online. The guide features an overview of the city’s many top-rated public and charter schools. Visit City Hall to pick up a copy or view it online at CoralSprings.gov/schools. Members of the Coral Springs Department of Budget and Strategy will provide an overview of the city’s budget process and answer resident questions during the Budget Academy held on August 29. There are two ways to attend, virtually from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. or in person at City Hall. Sessions will include information about tax dollar allocation and how funds are used for city services and operations. For details or to register, visit CoralSprings.gov/academy. August is often the most active month for tropical storms and hurricanes in South Florida. Now is a good time to review your family’s storm plan and ensure you have a disaster supply kit. PARKLAND UPDATE By Mayor Rich Walker
A
ugust marks the return to school and, ultimately, the end of Summer. I know I ask this every year, but “where does the time go?” If you read this column regularly, you know that my wife Catherine and I have five children. Every August we see them off to another school year, but this year is a little different—our oldest is going to college at the University of Delaware. Now we have two children in high school, one in middle school, and our youngest in elementary school. Delaney entering college not only signifies her growth, but our family as a whole is embarking on a new chapter. These benchmarks, while moments of great pride, serve to mark the passage of time much faster than we might want. So what do we do when we realize we can’t slow down time? This underscores the importance of making the most of time by doing meaningful things. For Catherine and
me, volunteerism and public service have provided us with numerous opportunities to make a difference and maximize our time. These very same opportunities have also provided us with great parenting moments and permanent family memories. We fully immerse ourselves in the myriad of academic, athletic, and recreational organizations that are available. Making meaningful connections with our neighbors, while engaging with our own family is priceless. SOS Children’s Villages, located right in our backyard, offers bountiful opportunities to connect with little ones that have the ability to fill big hearts. Aston Gardens and Allegro Parkland provide opportunity to interact with seniors—many of whom are proud veterans. We see these opportunities throughout our community. Whether it’s the Mayor for a Month program or the Youth Ambassador program that the City of Parkland (City) offers its youth to be involved in one of our Advisory Boards calling residents to volunteer, it’s clear we are not alone in our desire
to make the most of time. Frequently at our City Commission meetings we recognize members of our community who have volunteered, achieved a great accomplishment, or otherwise maximized their time. So as you send the kids off to another school year, or recall fondly when you did so, consider doing something meaningful before more time passes. If you would like to share your thoughts about doing meaningful things, benchmarks, the passage of time, or you have questions or comments you’d like to share with me, I would love to hear from you.
