Foganholi was sworn into office as the representative for District 5 during a ceremony at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center in Fort Lauderdale. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Foganholi to the position on April 29, filling the seat vacated

by now State Senator Dr. Rosalind Osgood. Foganholi said he was honored to serve the families in District 5 and be a member of the School Board. “My parents came here from Brazil with a dream to make a better future for our family. Voters to Decide on Broward County Schools Funding Increase in August By Our City Staff

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is presenting voters with a referendum that will appear on the August 23, 2022, primary election ballot. “The Secure the Next Generation” referendum would increase property owner’s contribution by 0.50 millage points from current levels. A millage rate refers to the amount of property tax paid based on the assessed value of a piece of real estate. One mill is equal to 1/1,000. For example, a 1 mill tax on a $100,000 property would yield a net tax of $100. The school district says it will use funds to recruit and retain high-quality teachers and eligible staff by increasing compensation, providing additional school resource officers and school safety staff, and, enhancing essential programs, such as mental health services. The current ½ mill assessment will expire next year if the proposal is not approved by

voters in August. ​​“If the referendum doesn’t pass, we would have zero, which means our teachers would not receive any of the supplements that they receive now,” said Broward School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. If the proposal passes it will generate about $177 million annually, which represents more than 5% of the district’s total annual expenditures. The majority of the funds will be used to attract and retain teachers by augmenting salaries. In addition to BCPS, Charter Schools are set to receive $45 million in funds. “The counties on both sides of us are actually recruiting some of our top talent from Broward County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Vicki Cartwright. Broward County spends about $12,000 per student per year. The county’s expenditures are slightly higher than the state of Florida overall, but lag neighboring Miami

Dade and Palm Beach Counties. According to BCPS the average Broward homeowner would see a tax increase of about $23 per month following the adoption of the proposal.

s the 2022 storm season approaches Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) plans to upgrade the energy grid in 2022 to enhance day-to-day reliability for customers and improve resiliency in the face of severe weather. Strengthening power poles, maintaining trees and vegetation near power lines, installing smart grid technology, regularly inspecting equipment, and undergrounding neighborhood power lines in targeted areas have helped improve service reliability by 45% for FPL customers over the past decade. “We understand how much our customers depend on the critical service we provide. That’s why our team works tirelessly to continuously improve the energy grid across our service area – from Miami to Pensacola,” said Eric Silagy, chairman and CEO of FPL. “We know that in Florida it’s not a matter of if, but when, the next storm will impact our state. Our disciplined infrastructure and technology investments are improving day-to-day service for customers and helping us speed restoration after a storm.”

FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Pilot Program, launched in 2018, has completed about 600 neighborhood projects through the end of 2021, and FPL plans to bring the benefits of undergrounding to more neighborhoods across Florida in the future. “We continue to deploy innovative and industry-leading solutions that improve the grid – investments that are paying off for our customers,” said Manny Miranda, executive vice president of power delivery for FPL. “We are always looking for new ways to enhance the reliability of our service. ninsured motorists, and motorists with very low bodily injury liability limits, are all over Florida’s roadways. In fact, the drivers most likely to be uninsured are the most dangerous. This is because many of those drivers who are uninsured don’t have any because they are bad drivers and can’t afford the premium because they are bad drivers. Then there are those that are simply driving without valid driver’s licenses either because they are bad drivers, or they never even bothered to obtain a driver’s license. Those people driving without a driver’s license are simply unable to purchase insurance coverage because the insurance carriers require them to have a driver’s license in order for them to purchase insurance coverage. The most recent estimates of the percentage of drivers in Florida who are uninsured ranges anywhere from 20% to almost 30%. Probably an equal percentage are underinsured for the type of accidents and injuries that they cause. Many times, negligent or reckless drivers leave the scene of an accident because they lack insurance. Many people driving drunk or under the influence of alcohol or drugs are underinsured. Uninsured motorist coverage covers you when a person in a vehicle causes injuries and that person either has no automobile insurance coverage or doesn’t have enough coverage to cover you or your family for an accident. Uninsured motorists simply have no coverage. Underinsured motorists have inadequate coverage to cover the injured person or persons in an accident. Uninsured motorist coverage covers you, family members living in your household (conditions apply), and person lawfully in your automobile. Uninsured motorist coverage covers those same persons for an amount over and above their personal injury protection coverage and medical payments. The uninsured motorist coverage will supplement the coverage the at fault driver and owner has, and will cover those entitled to coverage for any bodily injury, pain, and suffering, mental anguish, lost wages, medical bills, and permanent injury suffered. Uninsured/underinsured insurance policies also usually cover hit-and-run accidents. Many years ago, when I first started practicing law, I represented a young man who told me a story about how somebody got in their pickup truck and intentionally ran him down. He had no idea he had a case. With some questioning, I found out that the young man had uninsured motorist coverage, and we settled his case for 24 / June 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

his uninsured motorist policy limits of $50,000 We have always heard the expression: look out for number one. Yet, with car insurance, and insuring our families and ourselves, we do not always look out for number one. Or we just don’t know enough about insurance coverage. Some people have $100,000 worth of insurance to cover somebody else who is injured in an accident, but only have $10,000, or maybe even zero, to cover themselves. Therefore, you should buy the maximum amount of uninsured motorist coverage that you can afford to get to cover yourself and your loved ones.

The maximum that you can buy is an amount equal to your bodily injury liability coverage. But, if you have more than one vehicle in your household that is owned by you, or other vehicles owned by a family member or relative living with you, then you can stack your uninsured motorist’s coverage and obtain even more coverage. We almost always recommend the stacking form over the non-stacking form. However, if you only have one vehicle in your household, buying stacking coverage doesn’t necessarily make sense, and may not be worth it. Take a look at your automobile insurance policy now. If your policy has less uninsured motorist coverage than bodily injury liability limits, then you should increase your uninsured motorist coverage limits at least to an amount equal to your bodily injury liability limits, or as much as you can afford. In addition, if you have multiple cars in your household, you can increase the limits available for uninsured motorist coverage if you purchase the stacking form of coverage, as opposed to non-stacking. In other words, if you have three

cars in your household, and your uninsured motorist insurance limits on each policy are $100,000/300,000, then you can increase your uninsured motorist coverage by stacking it. If it is stacked with all three vehicles on the same policy, the available coverage will increase to $300,000/900,000. In addition, if you have an umbrella policy, you can also purchase uninsured motorist coverage on your umbrella policy. However, you have got to request it from your agent in order for it to happen. Most of the time people who think that they also have uninsured motorist coverage on their umbrella policy do not have it, or have a very small amount. Caution: In order for it to be valid, and for any of your umbrella coverage is to be valid, you must be certain that you have minimum underlying limits that are required by your umbrella policy. If you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured motorist, the uninsured motorist coverage is available to you should you need it. Do not let your insurance agent convince you otherwise. Do not protect yourself less than you are protecting the other guy. Do not listen to your insurance agent regarding uninsured motorist coverage if they tell you to buy less than your bodily injury liability limits of your automobile insurance policy, and you can afford to purchase more. Many times the insurance agent will sell you coverage or types of insurance that are most profitable for the agent or the insurance company. Your insurance agent often does not know what is the best coverage for you, or does not necessarily have your best interest at heart. No matter what they try to tell you about uninsured motorist coverage, understand that it is as important as any other coverage and more important than some of the stuff they will try and sell you. They may tell you that you have other coverage that makes uninsured motorist coverage unnecessary, but that is untrue.

It amazes me how they do it with apparent ease and we, as parents, come to expect their ability as ordinary. But it isn’t, it is extraordinary and they should know how grateful we are as a community for their leadership. This past school year we made great

strides in returning to a pre-pandemic environment. Who would have thought “normal” could feel so good? As we continue returning to full normal, let’s take a moment to appreciate the students, faculty, and staff of all of our schools for their resilience and persistence in working through all the challenges of the past few years.
