Golfing For The King Tournament to Raise Funds For Scholarships BY NICOLE JENKINS
T
he community will golf for a good cause at this year’s Golfing for the King Tournament. The “Golfing for the King” 13th Annual Coral Springs MLK, Jr. Golf Classic will be held on March 8th from 7 am to Noon at the Country Club of Coral Springs, located at 10800 W. Sample Road Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The golf tournament will benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund for needy Coral Springs high school students regardless of ethnicity. The tournament entry deadline is March 1st. Golfers can look forward to many activities at the tournament. Registration will start at 7 am, followed by shotgun at 8 am. There will be a four person scramble, continental breakfast, buffet awards luncheon, raffle tickets, beverages on the course, on course challenges and contests, driving range, tournament awards, and signature gift pack. Other exciting attractions will be offered including Brown Forman liquor, a stretch zone and much more! This year, the MLK Golf Tournament is also being rebranded in honor of former Coral Springs Mayor, the late Skip Campbell.
Besides a day of fun on the golf course, the Golfing for the King will benefit the local community. “The goal of the “Golfing for the King” 13th Annual Coral Springs MLK, Jr. Golf Classic is to raise funds to provide scholarships to financially deserving local students who, through their words and actions, embody the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings on peace, racial harmony, community service, and bettering the lives of others,” said Joyce Campos, Community Relations Manager for the City of Coral Springs. Scholarships are offered to Coral Springs residents without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin. “They provide the students not only with some financial relief, but also with opportunities to find mentors eager to offer them advice and support as they embark on the next stage of their educational career. More than just the financial aspect, the mentoring, coaching and support these students have received from the MLK Committee members has been invaluable,” added Campos. Local business owners also benefit from participating in this charitable event. “The local businesses will receive many benefits by sponsoring and playing in the 13th Annual Golfing for the King Tournament, and down the road, mentoring these accomplished youngsters,” said Campos. Coral Springs Festival of the Arts Celebrates 15 Years BY NICOLE JENKINS
The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is celebrating 15 years of supporting the arts in the local community. The Festival of the Arts will be held on March 16th and 17th at The Walk, and this year it will be bigger and better. Attendees can enjoy an arts and crafts show with over 200 fine artisans and crafters, along with Gardenfest Coral Springs featuring a wide variety of orchids, exotic and native plants. The special anniversary event will also showcase a lineup of local artists and entertainers including flamenco dancers, a wallpaper fashion exhibit, and a literary workshop with Connie Francis. Connie Francis is the 2019 Literary Guest Speaker at the Festival’s Literary Workshop, which will be held on March 15th from 7 to 9 pm at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Francis will discuss her newly released autobiography “Among My Souvenirs - The Real Story”, which includes stories about her life including time spent with Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Ed Sullivan. Connie Francis is best known as a chart-topping female vocalist during the 1950s and 1960s, with international hits, “Who’s Sorry Now”, “Where the Boys Are” and “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” to name a few.
“This year we are very excited to have a very special guest at our literary workshop, Connie Francis, a chart topping female vocalist from the 50s and 60s, to discuss her autobiography,” said Shirley Richards, President and Founder of the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts. The Festival has also added a new component this
year, Fashion as Art, an exhibit of fashion made from unconventional material-wallpaper made by the designers of Atlantic Wallpaper in Pompano Beach. The children’s area will also have a percussion booth where kids can try out all different types of percussion instruments. Richards started the event in 2004 because she was active at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, having founded and chaired the Friends of the Museum
and was also active in the business community. “The city was talking about the new downtown area, and the time was right to start an event to support the arts and culture in Coral Springs and to bring focus to the downtown area,” she said. “The goal of the Festival is to support the art and culture in the NW Broward area. We give free booths to any area art non-profit such as the Museum, art guild, Friends of Music, and any excess funds that are raised beyond the expenses of the Festival are donated to area art non-profits,” added Richards. The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is the city’s premiere event. The Festival is a private non-profit corporation run entirely by volunteers. In addition to the traditional arts and craft show produced by Howard Alan Events, the Festival includes a music stage, a performing arts stage, a children’s area, and the North Stage with an Urban Art Paintout and Fashion as Art exhibit. Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for Leyla Maric, MD cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Maric. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.

Relay for Life Brings The Fight Against Cancer to Coral Springs BY JON DUKA
On Saturday, April 6, 2019, more than 500 participants will join together at the annual Relay For Life of Parkland and Coral Springs at the Sportsplex at Coral Springs, 2700 Sportsplex Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33065 to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle. The event starts at 5:00pm and takes place on the football field next to Coral Glades High School. “Our theme this year is ‘Imagine a World Without Cancer’,” said event co-lead Rachel Frydman. “The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest peer-topeer fundraising event to save lives from cancer”. The American Cancer Society is the cause fighting cancer on every front; standing shoulder to shoulder with cancer patients and those supporting them. Last year, 2.7 million participants in the U.S. raised more than $279 million at more than 3,500 events to help beat our biggest rival. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness. Local cancer survivor Trish McKibbin will join
with other community members to celebrate at the annual event and to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. “The mission of the American Cancer Society is to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY As we move into the month of March, the City of Parkland (City) begins its strategic planning process in which we review both our current practices as well as plan for our upcoming annual budget. Beyond merely looking to the year ahead, the strategic planning process allows us to look into the future and set priorities for Parkland’s direction. For 2019, our City is embarking on a multi-month strategic planning and visioning process that will include input from our residents, commission, and staff. Initial planning meetings began in February and in March the process continues with some initial community focus groups and the development of a survey for resident outreach. In April, we will have several resident focus groups and in May we expect to finalize the process. The result will leave us with an adopted strategic plan that will include an updated vision and mission for the City, values the city seeks to exemplify, goals and strategic initiatives, and a business and work plan which will be the foundation for our budget planning. Given the growth of Parkland over the past several years and the tragedy that occurred in 2018, it is even more important that we take the time this year to comprehensively assess where we are now and what opportunities lie ahead for our city. Issues like public safety services, projections for completion of the communities in the Wedge, improvement of parks, and other city services will all be discussed as part of this process. We encourage community input into our strategic planning and I hope that residents will reach out to me by email or in person to share questions, concerns, and ideas that we can discuss during strategic planning. In terms of upcoming city events, in addition to our wonderful Farmers’ Market on March 3 and March 17, we have some excellent special events in March, including our Parkchella concert on March 9 from 5:30pm-8:30pm at Pine Trails Park and Movie in the Park on March 22 from 7:30pm-10:00pm. would like to thank everyone in our community who volunteered or participated in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas “A Day of Honor in Service & Love” project and the Interfaith ceremony held at Pine Trails Park on February 14, 2019. It is so important that we continue to come together as a community to support those who are still struggling with the pain and loss from this tragedy. I can think of no better way to drive out hurt and anger, than through “Service & Love”. The first art installation from the Power of Art project – The Temple of Time – is complete and open to the public. World renowned artist, David Best, worked with his seasoned, temple crew and members of the community to build a 35-foot, ornate temple, with no religious affiliations, as a place where you can visit to reflect and share. The Temple of Time is open for reflection daily from dawn to dusk, on the site of our old City Hall (9551 West Sample Road), through mid-May when we anticipate it will be burned in a ceremonial fire. On Friday March 1st, Coral Springs will host its second annual Innovate Downtown, where local creators will showcase products, innovative solutions and ideas to a panel of judges. These innovations will be displayed the following day, Saturday, March 2nd, at the City’s Unplugged outdoor concert, live art and food truck event. Unplugged will be held on the Great Lawn of City Hall, starting at 6 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this free, acoustic performance (food and spirits will be available for purchase). The family-favorite, Our Town America Festival, returns to the Sportsplex March 8-10. The three-day festival features amusement rides, entertainment, food, arts and crafts and a classic car show. Movies in the Park returns Saturday March 9th with Hotel Transylvania 3 at Betti Stradling Park. The movie starts at 7:30 p.m., admission is free, and participants are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Preventing Vehicle Thefts CHIEF JON SHAW he holidays have come to an end, but our heightened sense of personal safety and awareness is essential year-round. This month, I would like to provide you with some important safety tips on preventing vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries. Regardless of where you live, single-family home or apartment, warm weather or frigid cold, the strategies are the same and just as important! So, please feel free to share this information with family and friends! Here’s the good news…YOU can help prevent

vehicle thefts. A majority of vehicle thefts take place when vehicles are left: 1.) unlocked 2.) keys/fob left inside the vehicle 3.) vehicle engine is left on Regardless of whether your vehicle’s windows are tinted, if a criminal has easy access to the interior of your car (via an unlocked door), he/she will search it entirely for the most valuable item inside: your car key. Avoid keeping valuables in your car. If a thief must choose between a seemingly empty car or one with a laptop, cell phone, tablet, or wallet on the passenger seat, guess which one they’ll choose? I think we both know the answer. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, a valuable is defined multiple ways; as having a desirable or esteemed characteristic or qualities; of great use or service. The definition varies for everyone, especially criminals. I was told that once you do something for at least 21 days, it becomes habit. If you make it a habit each night to remove your valuables and lock your vehicle, it will become a part of your daily routine. If you must leave something important in your car, put it in your trunk before you reach your destination. Experienced thieves have been known to stake out parking lots, especially in high traffic areas like shopping malls and grocery stores, to look for drivers transferring things to their car trunk, and then break into the trunk when the driver is out of sight. You may be thinking that this only happens when the sun has set; unfortunately, criminals do not discriminate between time of day. Many times, criminals target preschools and daycares, with the hopes that parents leave belongings in their vehicle for that “quick” trip inside. Another extremely simple way for criminals to steal your vehicle is watching for a stranded, empty, running vehicle. We all know there are those very tempting “I am just going to run inside real quick!” moments where you want to leave your keys, wallets, purses, and other important items in your car, while the engine is still running. It takes less than one minute to steal your car, drive away, and possibly never be seen again! Don’t provide criminals with an easy opportunity. Protect yourself and your belongings. The extra five minutes it takes to park your car, lock the doors and walk into the bank or post office, saves you an enormous amount of stress and in many circumstances, money!
