he Coral Springs MLK Jr. Committee will host a series of events to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The City of Coral Springs will host an MLK award reception for student art and literary exhibits on January 17th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive. This is part of the 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. The show, “Dr. King Had a Dream So That My Dreams Could Come True” will take place on January 17th at 7 pm at Coral Springs Center of the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive. This is a musical/drama production by KG Productions & Musical Paintbrush. Join your community on January 18th at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Business Luncheon. The keynote speaker is Marc H. Morial, an American political and civic leader and
the current President of the National Urban League. The luncheon will be held at 11:30 am at Coral Springs Marriott, 11775 Heron Bay Blvd. At the Luncheon, the MLK Committee will award the MLK Monument Award to an individual, business or organization that exemplifies Dr. King’s ideologies. “The mission of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is to honor the legacy of a great American leader and role model, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in this community,” said Joyce Campos, Community Relations Manager for the City of Coral Springs, adding, “The City believes the values
and teachings of Dr. King apply and appeal to every segment of our population – businesses, students, teachers, families and seniors. It is our way of inspiring others to follow his teachings, to promote a unified community.” The Coral Springs MLK Committee sponsors a scholarship program for high school seniors in the City attending college or a higher institution of learning. The scholarships are intended to assist students who have the financial need. The Committee raises funds throughout the year to fund the program.
The City wants to continue to educate local students and the community on Dr. King’s teachings. “Many of our students are not familiar with the history and struggles of the Civil Rights movement or the sacrifices Dr. King and other black leaders made to ensure equal rights for all. “Snow” Much Fun! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

elieve it or not, snow was in the forecast at a very special location in Sunrise last month. The children who reside in JAFCO Village as well as those who have been adopted or placed in foster care through JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) programs donned their warmest winter gear for a special Chanukah celebration. More than 10 tons of snow, plenty of traditional potato latkes, and lots of donated toys were present at the annual party. Over 150 eager children made snow balls, created snow angels, and were even able to slide down a snowy hill right in their backyard. Additionally, the traditional menorah lighting was done by JAFCO Director, Sarah Franco, and a gift table was available for children to choose something special.
“Every year we come here to celebrate Chanukah, because it’s a miracle, and for us, it’s a very special day, because we adopted him from JAFCO,” said Taly Raz, about her son. The smiles were contagious, the laughter outrageous, and the joy instantaneous all because of a philanthropic and loving Plantation couple. Longtime JAFCO supporters Howard and Julie Talenfield once again sponsored the anticipated snow-filled event. The duo’s generous donation has become a holiday tradition that they have been carrying on for over a decade. Howard is a managing partner at Talenfeld Law and Julie is president of BoardroomPR in Fort Lauderdale. “I challenge anyone to tell me a better feeling than bringing smiles to children’s faces during the holiday season,” said Julie Talenfeld. “My husband and I are proud to continue this tradition of the snow-filled party at JAFCO Village.” The Talenfelds have a reputation for giving back to the community and making an impact. The big-hearted couple sponsors the Chanukah party so that foster children who live in the
residences at the Children’s Village and children who have been adopted through JAFCO can celebrate the holiday in a unique fashion. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide a holiday miracle for the children of JAFCO,” added Shelli Gold, Director of Development Operations at JAFCO. “This annual tradition fills the air with magic, laughter and smiles, it’s a very exciting time of year for the children.” JAFCO was established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children. In September 2014 JAFCO expanded its mission to include children with autism and other developmental disabilities with the opening of the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center, a family enrichment, resource and respite center for families raising a child (ages 0-22) with a developmental disability. The center is in Sunrise and is the only center of its kind in the country offering families intensive support, case management services and overnight and extended out-of-home respite care all under one roof.

Joy Carter Appointed as Coral Springs Vice Mayor LYNNE MARTZALL
O
n Wednesday, November 28, 2018, Commissioner Joy Carter was appointed as Vice Mayor for the City of Coral Springs by her fellow Commissioners. The Commission motioned to select a date for the Special Election to fill the Mayoral vacancy during their next meeting December 5. In addition, the Commission voted 3-1 to accept applications to fill the Mayoral vacancy until the Special Election. Once the City Attorney finalizes the application, it will be available on the City’s website. Vice Mayor Carter was elected for Seat 5 in 2014. She has been a resident of Coral Springs for 33 years. Commissioner Carter has more 29 years of community service and volunteer support for multiple
organizations. She has had numerous leadership roles in the City of Coral Springs and Broward County. In 1985, she began her career in real estate working for the City’s main developer, Coral Ridge Properties, for 11 years. During that time, she also served as a volunteer for the Economic Development Foundation. In 2003, she became Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, and later served seven years as Chair of Chamber Trustee. Vice Mayor Carter has received many accolades for her involvement in the Chamber and from the real estate organizations that she has worked with. She has also served on many City Committees over the years, including the City’s 50th Anniversary, September 11th 5K, Customer Involved Government and Senior Advisory Council. Born in Boise, Idaho, she is the proud mother of two daughters, Tara and Mallory. She enjoys a household partnership with her Mom, Mary, and a career as a realtor with Keller Williams Realty located in Coral Springs. Parkland Library is More Than Just Reading BY NICOL JENKINS

he Parkland Library isn’t just about books. The local library offers art classes, chess club, book discussion groups and much more! During the month of January, be sure to bring your family and friends to the Parkland Library for one or more of these fun events. Mark your calendar for January 8th from 10:30 am to Noon for the Adult Art Class: Still Life with Apples & Oranges. Students will draw a still life on recycled cardboard primed with acrylic paint. This class will be led by instructor Malgorzata Kawashima. All supplies will be provided. Parkland Library card is required to register. Also on January 8th from 6:15 to 7:15 pm, meet inspirational author Arlyn Halpern during the event, The Road to Spiritual Abundance. Author, therapist and dancer Arlyn Halpern shares her route from emotional impoverishment to spiritual abundance. With vivid imagery and skillfully woven memories she takes her readers on a journey through Israel, Sweden and India, then back to the states where she embarks on in-depth Buddhist study and practice with a Tibetan Buddhist Master, where “the teachings become a knowing rather than an intellectual exercise.” Her lifelong passion for dance and search for spiritual truth carries her, and us, on the universal
path to greater wisdom, self-acceptance, and compassion. Registration is required. Join the Parkland community at an Art Reception in Memory of Gina Montalto, to be held on January 9th from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Gina Rose Montalto (4/22/03 – 2/14/18) was an artistic, athletic, intelligent, kind person whose life was taken in the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. A Parkland resident who enjoyed attending the library’s programs and who relaxed when reading, Gina would find it fitting to see her art displayed at the Parkland Library. She loved her family – dad Tony, mom Jennifer and brother Anthony – being with her friends and enjoying food. Gina was always one to give compliments, help others, and share good times, and now those who loved her are fulfilling her dream of having something she created put on display for public viewing. This is why the wonderful Gina Rose Montalto has been chosen as Artist of the Month and will be celebrated at this art reception at the Parkland Library. Veteran of Israeli Raid on Entebbe to Give Talk at Chabad of Coral Springs BY JON DUKA

n July 4th, 1976, several transport planes, carrying 100 elite Israeli commandos, touched down on dark runway at an airport in Central Uganda kicking off perhaps the boldest and most successful military raid in history. The operation rescued 102 hostages and has been studied by militaries around the world extensively since. On Monday, January 7th at 7:30pm, Israel Defense Forces veteran Sassy Reuven will give his first hand account of the famous mission, code named “Operation Thunderbolt,” at the Chabad of Coral Springs. Reuven served during the terror-filled years of 1973-1976 in Israel’s elite “Red Beret” paratrooper unit. He participated in several covert operations including the famous raid on Entebbe, which freed 96 Israelis in addition to the crew of a hijacked Air

T
he Holiday Season is upon us and I hope you found the time to join us for the Downtown in December event. It was a terrific event that helped all of us get in the spirit of the season. Kids rode the train, wrote letters to Santa, played in the snow, ate delicious food and even had a chance to visit with jolly old Saint Nick. If you missed it this year, you will not want to miss it next year. At the police department, our season of giving begins in October when we begin collecting donations and holding fundraisers to support our Thanksgiving Food Drive. We are so fortunate to have the support of the City, local businesses, our employees and our citizens. We all worked together to make the holidays brighter for families in need. This year we were able to deliver 440 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need. This couldn’t have been done without the generosity of those I’ve mentioned and the hard work and determination of the police and fire department employees. We hope we were able to make a difference in the families’ lives who received those baskets. This year we partnered again with our local Walmart and Target stores to hold two “Shop with a Cop” events. We had forty-eight children participate in the event this year. Seeing the joy in their eyes as they searched through the store, picking out gifts for themselves and their families, was amazing. Bringing joy and happiness to those less fortunate than us is a tremendous feeling. Inside our building, we put up two angel trees. The trees are decorated with name tags of needy children. I would like to give a special thanks to our Youth Liaison Unit who gather the list of needy children from their school. Our employees dig deep to support this worthy cause by selecting the tags and purchasing gifts for the children on the tag. The gifts are then distributed by our Community Involvement Unit and employee volunteers. Our Community Involvement Unit works so hard this time of year making sure those in need aren’t forgotten over Thanksgiving and the Holidays. They coordinate all of the donations and volunteers to make these special events happen. They are a small but mighty unit, and we are very fortunate to work side by side with them. The giving spirit wasn’t confined to our Public Safety Building. NFL stars Darius Butler and Major Wright teamed up to help Coral Springs residents in need. They hosted a turkey giveaway at Darius’s high school, Coral Springs Charter. They gave away fifty turkeys paired with $40 gift cards to each family in need. Darius Butler and Major Wright both grew up together in Broward County as friends and competed in football. I would like to thank them for giving back and helping those in need. Additionally, I want to thank Walmart, Target, Green Thumb Lawn and Garden, Mr. Pool Service, Marshalls, Coral Springs Charter PTSO Board, Forest Hills Elementary Safety Patrol and many of our generous community members who all took part in making the holidays brighter by helping us with their generous donations. The kindness and generosity of our community is second to none. I can’t thank them enough for all they do. I’ve talked a lot about our residents in need, but there are many in our state who are hurting far worse than us. During the holiday season, I hope you keep the residents of the Panhandle, who were devastated by Hurricane Michael, in your thoughts and prayers. Please try to support them in any way possible. Both the police and fire departments sent help to those regions who were devastated by this killer storm. Our department donated two vehicles to law enforcement agencies who lost their fleet and were unable to patrol their streets. The rebuilding will go on for months, maybe years. If you have the opportunity to help those in need, please do. In closing, if you see something suspicious or unusual in the community, please “Make a Call and Make a Difference.” You can call our non-emergency number at (954) 344-1800 or dial 911 for emergencies. We would prefer to come to a call that turns out to be nothing, rather than find a crime later, that we could have prevented. Please help us by remembering to remove valuables from your car, locking your doors and never leave the key fob in your car. Vision Board for Kids BY IVIS MATEOS s we usher in a new year, now is a great time to take the opportunity to plan and visualize the future with your children. Since I was a teenager, I had a passion for writing down my dreams for the future and setting goals to achieve them. Some experts believe vision boards or dream boards empower you and increase achievement as you visualize the manifestation of your dreams. Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich, is considered the founder of the Science of Success and said, “Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true.” Dream boards teach children about setting-goals with aligned action. Achieving their set goals will help them build self-esteem and the desire to strive for greater things. Creating a dream board with your kids is quite fun and easy. Just follow these simple steps: 1. Gather your materials. You will need: a large piece of construction paper or poster board; plenty of magazines, printed materials and even old photographs which you will use to cut and paste on your board; scissors; glue; markers and colorful pens; and glitter – to make it sparkly. 2. Engage in a conversation with your child about their hopes and dreams. It is PuzzleJunction.com important to ask your children to be specific and descriptive in order to have a clear vision of their goals. This will encourage them to stay motivated by the board every time they see it. You can use proving questions such as: What do you want to be when you grow up and why? If your child says a firefighter, look for pictures to cut out of firefighters or things related to a firefighter, such as a fire truck, etc. Then, look for words or create words from the construction paper that describe what they want to be, such as firefighter, hero, to help others, etc. What things would you like to have? If the child says, “I want a puppy”, then cut out a picture of a puppy similar to the one they want. Be specific with your descriptive words, like “brown Labrador” or his name will be “Lucky”, and paste the pictures of the dog with the words. 3. When you are done creating your boards, make sure you hang it in a place where the children can always see it, this will keep them focused and motivated. The New Year is a time when we reflect on our lives and commit to improving ourselves and the world around us in the coming year. For many, 2018 was a horrific year and much of the pain will continue in 2019. For others, the pain from 2018 will be carried for a lifetime. Even as we move forward, it is important to be mindful of one another and of our different experiences. When we think of New Year’s resolutions, improvements on the outside such as losing weight and getting in shape are usually what first come to mind. They are on my list as well. However, after our community experience in 2018, I hope there will also be more internal resolutions, such as increased mindfulness and empathy, on everyone’s list. My wish is we all take moments out of our day to recognize and be grateful for what we have and for the different perspectives and experiences we all bring to the table. May we all work together to find common ground and common solutions to make our world a better place. In 2018, we welcomed many new and some expanded businesses to the City of Parkland. In the Waterways Shoppes along 441 we have Sunshine Kidds Dentistry, Pediatric Associates, Noire Nail Bar and Cryospace. In the Riverstone Shoppes along 441, we have La Rural Argentinian Steak House, and in Parkland Commons Carmela Coffee and the Cleveland Clinic expanded while the center welcomed All Star Pizza and Qwik Pack and Ship. Small businesses are an important part of a healthy local economy. Many of the businesses in our City are owned by Parkland residents so please support them as much as you can. In 2019, we are looking forward to some continued improvements that are coming to fruition. Street lights along Nob Hill Road and University Drive will be operational. The much-anticipated Parkland Library expansion will be underway as well as the expansion of Fire Station 42 on Parkside Drive. Additionally, we will be adding multipurpose fields at Pine Trails Park. Loxahatchee Road improvement construction is expected to begin at the end of 2019. While that will be a temporary inconvenience, it is a much-needed and long-awaited improvement. That project is being done in conjunction with Broward County, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation. When dealing with other governmental entities, things usually do not move as quickly as we are used to from the private sector. Our commission and staff are continually advocating on behalf of the City to get these projects done as quickly as they can be. The Farmers’ Market continues at the Equestrian Center from 9am – 1pm, with a Health and Wellness Fair on January 6 and the second market of the month on January 20. Parkland’s Family Fun Fest Carnival takes place from January 11-13 at Pine Trails Park and promises to make for a fun weekend! Our next city commission meeting is on Wednesday, January 16 at 7pm. to reflect on this tragedy is not to relive its reverberating effects on our community, but rather shine a light on the kindness and compassion of our residents, businesses and people from all over the world in the aftermath of February 14. From the moment tragedy struck our community, we witnessed businesses and residents coordinate food deliveries to grief-stricken families, memorial scholarships formed and fundraisers in memory of lives lost. Teenagers, parents and educators took their anger and frustration and turned it into action, with peaceful marches and demonstrations. The Coral Springs Museum of Art hosted art therapy sessions for students and teachers to serve as a safe space to heal. This therapy, led to the application and approval of a $1 million-dollar art grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to the Cities of Parkland and Coral Springs to create several art projects focused on - Healing After Gun Violence. The temporary public art projects will address important civic issues and demonstrate an ability to generate public-private collaborations, celebrate creativity and urban identity, and strengthen local economies. The Power of Art represents the unity of our cities coming together, while promoting our hopes for healing now and in the future.

Undoubtedly, 2018 was a difficult year and tragedy struck again when on October 23rd we suffered a devastating loss with the sudden death of Mayor Skip Campbell. A true statesman and pillar of the Coral Springs community, the passing of Mayor Campbell is something we continue to deal with emotionally and professionally on the dais. His passing has forced us to make difficult decisions going forward. As a Commission, and as dictated by our City’s Charter, we must hold a Special Election to fill the Mayoral vacancy. Working with our City Clerk and the Supervisor of Elections, we have decided to host the election on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. Additionally, the Commission accepted applications to temporarily fill the vacancy until the election is held. It is important that with reflection comes foresight, so as we look to the future of 2019, we look forward to the many great things that will take place in the City of Coral Springs. These include exciting events which take place right on the Great Lawn of City Hall like Jazz festivals, the Farmers’ Market, Food Truck series and family-friendly concerts. The demolition of the Financial Plaza and revitalization of Downtown Coral Springs is expected to start in February. The Bloomberg Philanthropy art exhibit grand openings, the 4th of July celebration, continued sports league tournaments and so much more is what makes our City such a wonderful community to call home. As we look toward the future, our City will welcome a newly elected Mayor, who will certainly provide new leadership and vision for the City and its residents. 2019 Goals for Margate PD CHIEF JON SHAW appy New Year! I hope you all had a truly magnificent holiday season and are off to a wonderful new year! As we embark on a fresh start in 2019, with new goals and resolutions, I would like to take this opportunity to share my goals with you for the Margate Police Department! As this new year has commenced I have taken some time to reflect on 2018. As the concept of community policing plays a tremendous role in our department as well as many departments around the United States, hosting events, such as “Coffee with a Cop” and National Night Out, which provide simple ways for our officers to connect with our community, all play an integral role in what we stand for. Last year, we had our very first Trunk or Treat on Halloween and it was a true sight to see, especially as the new Police Chief! I loved watching our community relationships building and growing amongst the members of our police department, city departments and the children and families in Margate and surrounding cities. I loved that families with young children came to trick or treat with us, because they felt safe! The many thanks and accolades that we received as a result of hosting Trunk or Treat meant only one thing… We are doing our job; allowing families to feel safe in Margate. My long term goal for 2019 is to continue to build such strong relationships with our businesses, families, residents, and all those who come to Margate and travel through, because of the amazing opportunities and customer service that are provided, on a daily basis. I pride myself in a department that is constantly striving to serve and protect our community with the utmost respect and dignity. We are proud to say that we can communicate in a variety of ways, one of our newest, being social media! Another goal for our department is to continue to educate and provide safety tips and crime prevention strategies quickly and efficiently, to people all over! Maybe you used to live in Margate and still follow along with the great things we are doing. If we are able to educate you about ways to protect yourself from becoming a victim of a crime, then we want to be able to provide it to you! You may have a family member who had questions about IRS scams, and you found some good information on our Facebook page, now you can take that education and use it to pay it forward! (That’s what it’s all about anyways, right?) Nowadays, (I speak from experience with two teenage sons who grew up using social media as a typical form of communication) social media is the way we communicate with friends and family as well as receive our local and national news. Each night our Facebook (MargateFLPolice) posts our regularly scheduled MPD Nightly Routine. This is to remind you each night to remove your valuables from your car and lock your car before bed. It’s a simple tip, but can protect you from becoming a victim of vehicle burglary. So, if you haven’t already, jump on to our Facebook page and check out all of the safety tips and fun that we have going on at MPD! Are you ready to set a goal but struggling with the first step?
