Summer Vacation Is Coming to an End

ike most of our readers , my family and I took

some time off this summer to unwind and recharge. We spent quality time together as a family, explored new things and re-visited familiar sites, met new people and got reacquainted with old friends. Although we may still be in vacation-mode, it’s time to start getting ready to go Back-to-School. It’s time to download that school supply list and stock up on notebook paper, pencils and erasers, as well as brand new backpacks and lunch boxes. It’s also time to tackle that to-do list: school sports physicals, back-to-school haircuts, and register for after school activities. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final carefree days of summer with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to the backto-school craziness once again. Sincerely,

A Red, White and Blue Celebration in Sunrise By Jill Sharpe

here was no better place to be

on Friday, July 4th, than in the City of Sunrise! The City and its partners planned a full day of free celebrations so residents could enjoy plenty of *BANG* for no buck. Kicking off the day’s activities the City’s “America – Marching through History” Parade wound its way west along Sunset Strip from NW 12th Street to City Park. The crowd enjoyed colorful floats that captured our nation’s greatest decades, along with costumed characters, marching bands, and appearances by special guests. When the parade ended the excitement continued with Family Fun Day at the Park. The event ran until 1:00 p.m. and offered free refreshments, rides and children’s activities. Then the BB&T Center, One Panther Parkway, opened its gates at 5:00 p.m. for a holiday bash complete with live music and fireworks. Parking and admission were free! This crowd-pleasing outdoor event was presented in partnership with title sponsor Rick Case Automotive Group, entertainment sponsor Wheelabrator Technologies, fireworks sponsor Metropica, radio sponsors Magic 102.7 and The Ticket 104.3, and associate sponsors Chester’s Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson, Sun-Sentinel, Carefree Boat Club and Ed Morse Sawgrass Automall. There was children’s rides as well as an assortment of food and beverage vendors. The Jacob Jeffries Band kicked off the concert at 6:00 p.m., followed by Grammynominated headliners the Spin Doctors (Two Princes, Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, Jimmy Olsen’s Blues). Workshop Teaches Artists How to Turn Their Passion Into a Profession By Jill Sharpe

many people, but for Sunrise resident Shari Afflick, Saturday, June 28th was a day of professional development. Afflick joined about sixty other local artists and creative entrepreneurs at a Business Plan Clinic & Workshop for Artists. Held at ArtServe, 1350 East Sunrise Boulevard, the June 28th session was the final workshop of a four weekend Artist as Entrepreneur Institute (AEI) course. “I’m 29 years old, and by the time I turn 30 I’m hoping to be self-employed and turn my passion into my profession,” said Afflick, whose acrylic paintings, mixed media art, and wood burnings can be seen on both the picture-sharing website Instagram and on YouTube by searching for SharStar Art. “(AEI) was truly life-changing, and it was more than just the information, but the inspiration I needed.” AEI is designed to provide local artists with the tools and knowledge they need to enhance their business skills. The curriculum was founded by the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC), and Saturday’s workshop was a coordinated effort of CPAC, Broward County’s Cultural Division and ArtServe. The State of Florida’s Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts provided additional support. That support translated into an opportunity for artists like Afflick to not just gain knowledge, but also to network with peers.

“Being around like-minded people was incredible,” said Afflick. “I was with all kinds of artists in so many genres-music, dance, visual arts. I’m so motivated now.” After learning about marketing and social media, Afflick used those lessons to enhance her logo and website. The use of social media websites to promote an artist’s work was just one topic that was brought up during the day-long session which focused on helping attendees perfect their business plan. Cheryl Cook, an Economic Development Specialist with the South Florida Regional Planning Council, began the day by covering how to work effectively with lenders. Her talk touched on the basics of credit, using collateral against a loan, and the different types of financial assistance an artist can tap into. Katerina Wagner then spoke about how to develop a unique brand. Wagner is the driving force behind Miami Art Scene, the top blog covering everything artrelated in Miami. She tapped into her experience as an art curator and marketing expert to inform participants on how to create their own brand, and then use their company’s materials and technology to consistently put their identity in front of potential buyers. “Artists want to say something about humanity, make a difference and get through to people without shoving it down their throat,” said Wagner. “Anything you want to talk about can be expressed through art. I love what I do, it’s not work to me.”

Turning something they love into their full-time work was a frequent theme among AEI participants. According to a study completed by the organization Americans for the Arts, the nonprofit arts and culture industry in Broward County is a $230 million industry. Arts-related professions support the equivalent of approximately 6,400 full-time jobs, an increase from the more than 3,500 arts and culture jobs held in 2005. These are jobs that belong to people like Afflick. “I’ve learned so much, including when you need to pay for a professional to do something versus doing it yourself,” continued Afflick. “They say that smart people learn from their mistakes, but wise people learn from others. I learned about marketing, speaking to lenders, things that are good for any entrepreneur, not just artists.” The program ended with a presentation by Rafael Cruz of the Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and then a discussion of what next steps the participants can take from here. Sunrise Hosts Inaugural “Mayors’ Chess Challenge” By Jill Sharpe

.“From the passionate stories of teachers, students, principals and families participating in the ‘First Move’ program, our next step as a community is to help expand this program and scholastic chess throughout Broward County,” said Mayor Ryan. According to a landmark 2000 study published in the journal “Research in the Schools,” students who received chess instruction scored significantly higher on all measures of academic achievement, including math, spatial analysis, and non-verbal reasoning ability. .“Our focus must be on developing the critical thinking skills necessary for the next generation of scientists, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, thinkers and leaders as we face some daunting challenges,” explained Mayor Ryan. “Along the way, I think we will start seeing more chess in our parks, in restaurants and throughout our community.”

Members of the community also participated. .This free event, spearheaded by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan and Lauderhill Mayor Richard Kaplan, was designed to draw attention to the benefits of chess in an academic environment and in our community. It was also an opportunity for players of all ages, novices and experts alike, to join in the fun. Instructors were on hand to help those new to the game. “This past school year, Sunrise launched a successful pilot program introducing formal chess instruction into the curriculum at three of our public elementary schools,” said Mayor Ryan. vious generation, but 212 cities and towns – including the City of Sunrise – earned recognition from national non-profit KaBOOM! as 2014 Playful City USA communities for their efforts to increase play opportunities for children. “We’re proud to be recognized for our dedication to healthy play and physical activity,” said Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan. “We are committed to increasing the quantity and quality of play in Sunrise for the benefit of all our residents.” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is critical to healthy brain development. It allows children to use their creativity while simultaneously developing imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Yet only one-in-five children today tlive within walking distance of a park or playground. That translates to less outdoor play time – and the resulting play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and academically. Don’t miss the Sunrise Police Department’s National Night Out, set for Tuesday, August 5, at our Public Safety Building. This free annual celebration helps heighten crime-prevention awareness and enhance police-community relationships. National Night Out features demonstrations and informative displays, as well as family-friendly entertainment. Enjoy live music, children’s activities, free refreshments, and an appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog. Families are also encouraged to attend our Back to School Round-Up on Saturday, August 9, at the Sunrise Civic Center. City of Sunrise Hosts 2nd Anime Film & Japanese Cultural Fest By Jill Sharpe

two years ago, this year’s Anime Film & Japanese Cultural Fest was even bigger and better this year. More than 750 people enjoyed an afternoon of culture and fun on June 28th at the Sunrise Civic Center Theater. Two years ago 600 attended the first Fest. The City of Sunrise presented two beautiful films by Academy Award winning director Hayao Miyazaki: Kiki’s Delivery Service, a magical coming of age adventure, and Castle in the Sky, a timeless story of courage, friendship, and a search for truth. Other highlights included bonsai, origami demos, manga cartoon art, a “cosplay” costume contest, a Japanese food court with refreshments for purchase and more. Yoshiko Taiko Dojo drummers kicked off

the Anime Fest on June 27th. This skilled troupe from Sincronia USA performed both traditional arrangements and their own amazing compositions. Using handmade drums that ranged from 6 inches to 6 feet, the drummers created a unique synchronized booming rhythm that spectators said could be heard , enjoyed and felt in the heart and soul. The thrilling cast of fifteen presented fire poi dancing, music and martial arts. “I think for most people who attended, the high point was the Anime Films, said Lily Mazurek , Sunrise Civic Center Theater Manager. “The place was packed for both films. The lobby was mobbed for the activities too, including the Bonsai demo. Many people told me they really enjoyed the entire event and they hope we continue it.”

Get Ready for Back to School in Sunrise at Round-Up Event By Jill Sharpe

t ’ s time for families to think about getting the kids back to

school in Sunrise and there is no better place to start than the cities Back to School Round-Up event, The third annual Round-Up event, this year sponsored by Baptist Health Urgent Care - Sawgrass, will take place on Saturday, August 9th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center , 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard, 33351. This free, family-friendly event will be jam-packed with fun things to do, lots of great information and free school supplies. Event organizers are expecting 3,000 attendees and advise residents to arrive early as the first 1,000 school-age children will receive a free age appropriate book of their choosing and a free drawstring backpack filled with school supplies such as pens, pencils, composition books and calculators. A parent or guardian must be present and proof of Sunrise residency is required. “Our aim is to provide everything a child needs to have a good start to the school year,” said Beth Zickar, Sunrise Leisure Services Director. “In addition to the free school supplies, representatives from every Sunrise school will be on hand to answer questions about the new academic year.” Parents will be able to connect with their school Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and or receive information about free or reduced lunch programs. Fire Rescue and Family Central representatives will also be on hand. They’ll also be rides, arts and crafts, face painting, music and yummy country food to fit the Round-Up theme including hot dogs, cotton candy and snow cones.

Sunrise Senior Receives Scholarship By Jill Sharpe

of the nation’s largest not-for-profit senior services providers, awarded Kari Cook, a senior at Calvary Christian Academy, Fort Lauderdale, and resident of Sunrise, a $1,225 scholarship to help fund her college education at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, where she plans to study business marketing in the fall. The scholarship is one of eight — totaling $15,000 — awarded to Covenant Retirement Communities employees and their dependents. Kari’s mother, Karen Cook, is the church relations coordinator at Covenant Village of Florida, Plantation, a faith-based, not-for-profit, continuing care retirement community administered by CRC. Her father, Rocky Cook, is the community’s chaplain. “By sponsoring scholarships for employees and their dependents, we are helping each individual grow,” says Deborah Tate, Covenant Retirement Communities vice president of human resources. “Covenant Retirement Communities is dedicated to individual development and fulfillment. The scholarships underscore that key commitment.” A selection committee received 55 applications from its communities nationwide and based awards on educational and career pursuits consistent with CRC values; an essay demonstrating a defined educational/career goal; and the student’s involvement in extra-curricular activities. During high school Cook volunteered at Covenant Village of Florida and worked as a waitress at the campus. She was a Calvary Christian Academy

varsity cheerleader, a member of the varsity track and field team, and a member of the school’s chorus. She earned a spot in the National Honor Society, as well as the Tri-M Music Honor Society. “Cook is a stellar student, and her essay reflected the focus and maturity of someone ready to make her mark on the world,” says Domenica Wehmann, executive director at Covenant Village of Florida. “She believes in her dreams, yet recognizes the hard work and dedication it will take to succeed.”

igament injuries to the ankle are more com -

mon in children than previously thought. The ligaments connect bones together. When the ligament stretches beyond its elastic limit, partial or complete tears develop. The most common ligament injury in the ankle is due to a twisting injury of the foot down and in. This can occur from sports, twisting the foot under the leg in a hole or even falling off of a shoe. These injuries may be associated with mild growth plate injuries. Usually the ligament injury or the growth plate is the more dominant problem. A thorough evaluation will best determine the injured part and the extent of it. Because the ligaments in the ankle connect below the growth plate it was more commonly thought that growth plates are weaker than ligaments and when twisting occurs the growth plate usually gets injured. With the increased participation in sports at a very young age the frequency of ankle ligament injuries has been rising. Signs and symptoms include low-grade to diffuse swelling present along the front part of the outer ankle. Swelling may be present on the inner ankle in severe outer ankle sprains. It may also be present with an inner ankle sprain where the foot turns down and in. Symptoms also include immediate difficulty weightbearing. Discoloration to the ankle and foot may develop a few days later. Immediate evaluation is necessary to determine the extent of the injury. The foot, ankle and leg are examined to determine which ligament is injured and the degree of injury associated with it. Testing of the ligament’s integrity is also performed to further assess the damage. Examination of the growth plates, tendons and bones around the ankle are also performed to determine any associated injuries. X-rays are necessary to determine if there are any associated bone injuries. Growth plates are evaluated to see if they are out of position. MRIs are rarely necessary as a good clinical exam usually provides all the necessary information in formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. An MRI is done only if there is suspicion of a cartilage injury that cannot be assessed via a clinical examination or x-ray. Immediate care is necessary to prevent any long-term problems. Mild injuries associated with minimal swelling may be treated with rest, ice, elevation and an ankle brace. Moderate injuries in which a partial tear has occurred may necessitate immobilization for two to six weeks in a removable boot or hard cast. Severe injuries need to be immobilized in a hard fiberglass cast for four to six weeks to allow the ligaments to heal properly. Physical therapy following bracing or cast removal is necessary to improve muscle strength, ankle stability, joint proprioception and to restore complete ankle motion. If left untreated, chronic instability commonly develops. Recurring twisting injuries then occur with minimal stress. This will require chronic use of an ankle brace and physical therapy. In most cases surgery would be necessary to surgically reconstruct the ligaments in the ankle and allow a full return to activity. In addition to bringing a smile to your face when you think of the poses’ names, once you do them, your mind is occupied with focusing on the postures, thereby negating other thoughts you may have at this time. This temporary clearing of thoughts, even for a few moments, is highly effective at calming the mind and bringing in peace. As we get older, we gradually do not have as much time to “play.” Yoga gives us the chance to go back to our childhoods; we sit on the floor, and sometimes stand on our hands or our heads. These seemingly trivial postures are not simply horse-play. These postures such as easy sitting position (Sukhasana), head stand (Sirsha-asana) and hand-stand (Adho Mukha Vrkasana) all have real physical benefits for our bodies. When we sit on the floor, we are opening our hips. When we stand on our heads or hands we are reversing gravity. Inversions, having the heart higher than the head, are said to be helpful in reversing blood and lymph flow, improving heart function and the immune system. The additional benefit of relieving varicose veins and edema has been reported with inversions that involve the legs being higher than the heart and head.

Yoga also promotes practical fitness. Yoga increases flexibility by stretching the body in new ways, bringing greater range of motion to muscles and joints. Yoga is a low to no impact form of exercise making it beneficial for those with joint or bone pain. Many yoga postures require you to support your own body weight in new ways, including balancing on one leg such as in Tree Pose (Vrkasana) or supporting yourself with your arms in Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Savasana), which helps increase arm and leg strength. back to school. The Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department is committed to keeping your students’ safe while getting to and from school this year. With the excitement of the first day of school also comes an increased risk of potential injuries involving transportation. Be it biking, walking, riding a school bus or being dropped off in a vehicle, there is potential for injury as roads become more crowded and traffic patterns change around school zones. “The safety of our students is our main priority,” said Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “We encourage everyone to be extra diligent and cautious, especially during the first few weeks of school as everyone adjusts to their new routines.”

It is important to follow all traffic laws and signage in school zones, crosswalks and drop-off lanes. The speed limit is 15 mph in school zones while the lights are flashing and during designated times posted at the beginning of each school zone. Parents dropping off or picking up their students are encouraged to avoid using cell phones and especially to not text while driving. Students’ still requiring car seats or booster seats should be properly seated and buckled in before putting the car in motion. Students are required to wear bicycle helmets when riding their bikes to school. There is also a law requiring motorists to stay at least three feet away from any bicyclists in the designated bike lane or sharing a roadway where a bike lane is unavailable. Remember to always stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading student passengers. Always be alert and aware around school busses as students may not be paying close attention and may dart out in front of traffic. Parents, educate your students on the safety rules of riding on the bus and at the bus stops. Together, we can ensure our students’ safety as they travel to and from school and give them the tools they need for another successful school year here in Sunrise. would ever want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So, how does someone decide if they need an attorney? And, if so, who should they hire? Recently, I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations, I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/ her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results. If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion, you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice, the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees.

In family law matters, fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances. The law firm of Evan H. Crime Reduction through Crisis Intervention Training

with mental illness in their lifetime, but due to the broad nature of the illnesses, many go undiagnosed or untreated. Today, approximately 66 percent of young people with mental health issues are not seeking or receiving treatment. Addressing this problem is one way we can reduce the growing number of incidents of violence, such as school shootings, and prevent them from happening here. The Broward Sheriff’s Office practices proactive policing and is increasing the number of deputies with Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. As Sheriff, my goal is continuously to expand BSO’s CIT training to provide deputies with the tools they need to assist those struggling with mental health concerns better. CIT training is based on the nationally recognized “Memphis Model” of crisis intervention which was established to develop a more intelligent, more effective and safer approach to mental health crises. It is community based and is offered in partnership with organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition and others. These partnerships connect law enforcement and the community together for common goals of safety, understanding and service for the mentally ill and their families. Since its inception in 2002, approximately 1,000 deputies and officers from various agencies have gone through CIT training. All of our emergency communication 9-1-1 operators also receive a specialized CIT course to assess emergency calls better. BSO currently has more than 280 active CIT deputies, a significant increase since January 2013. I remain committed to seeing this number increase each year. Thanks to cooperation between our community partners, the number of CIT courses available to all Broward County law enforcement agencies has increased significantly this year. BSO is on track to reach my goal of certifying an additional 150 CIT deputies by the end of 2014, which will double the number of CIT BSO deputies available to respond to crisis calls. The CIT course includes 40 hours of intensive training in behavioral health issues (mental illness and substance abuse), as well as treatments and psychotropic medications. Topics include sessions on the homeless, the elderly, veterans and those with developmental disabilities. Deputies also visit hospitals and crisis units, rehabilitation and counseling centers and homeless shelters to understand the many aspects of mental challenges. BSO continues to partner with many non-profit mental health centers so that our deputies learn best practices. I also require all our school resource deputies to be CIT trained. This helps them to identify children that could be at risk for harming themselves or others and intervene before matters escalate. The training provides law enforcement with de-escalation techniques and solutions specific to assessing the underlying medical or emotional issues responsible for a person’s state of mind. These strategies allow law enforcement to recognize the difference between behavior that is criminal and behavior that is due to a person’s decreased capacity to cope with the ordinary demands of life. In the past, law enforcement’s response to incidents involving a mental crisis was to apprehend the person who was acting out, being disorderly or threatening to cause harm. CIT training provides a non-violent solution that involves assisting, not arresting, the person with mental health problems. My experience has shown that arresting a person with mental health issues does not address the problem; instead, it adds to the problems the individual is already facing. Mental illness isn’t a crime, and incarceration shouldn’t be the solution.
