It’s Back to School Time

he lazy days of summer are slowly coming to an end. There are a couple of weeks of pool time, beach days and movie matinees left to relax and unwind; rejuvenate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Before we know it, the kids will be back to school and we’ll be back to crazy carpool schedules and chauffeuring to afterschool activities and sports practices. The next few weeks will be a blur; stocking up on school supplies and buying new clothes and sneakers. Now is the time to start thinking about afterschool enrichment programs. In this issue you will find our Back to School Guide. We’ve put together a list of activities in our area to keep your kids busy after school with everything from dance classes and martial arts to tutoring programs and academic enrichment classes. Caribbean Colorful Diversity – The City of Miramar and Latin American Art Pavilion (LAAP) present Caribbean Colorful Diversity, an exhibition in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month. The exhibit features a comprehensive collection of artwork from internationally established artists, each with their own diverse, unique and distinct styles that blend together to form a synthesis of flavors truly representative of the regions rich history. Caribbean Colorful Diversity brings together six artists from different backgrounds that appear to erase the geographic borders and differences between the countries of the region. Ansin Family Art Gallery, through August 28th. Citizens’ Police Academy – Qualified Miramar residents interested in learning more about the Miramar Police Department and the field of law enforcement can sign up for the free 14-week academy being held August 11 – November 10th. Classes meet every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Certified instructors provide citizens with a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of the police department. Class topics include: DUI enforcement, economic crimes, burglary investigations, juvenile and child abuse investigations, and the role of the Medical Examiner office. Demonstrations by the K-9 unit and laser/radar will be performed; students will also have an opportunity to participate in the ‘Ride-Along’ program, allowing them to ride with an officer during a regular patrol shift. Miramar Residents Enjoy Celebrating CaribbeanAmerican Heritage Month at Local Festival

he people of Miramar were transported to the islands on June 20th as the Caribbean-American Heritage Month Celebration took place at Shirley Branca Park. Hundreds of people enjoyed the free festival that was part of the city’s “Culture in the Night Concert Series”. Many of those in attendance were there to see headlining musicians Marcia Griffiths and Glen Washington, but the family-friendly event brought in people interested in a variety of offerings. Held the day before Father’s Day, the event had even more children’s activities with the addition of inflatable bounce houses that kids were lining up for. The festival has become one of the signature events for showcasing all of the cultural offerings within, and around, Miramar. “For a city as diverse as Miramar, it’s appropriate to celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month here at Branca Park,” said City Commissioner Yvette Colbourne, whose family is from Jamaica. “It’s a great event with a great line-up of music. It’s always nice to see so many residents come out. You see kids, seniors and families out on a beautiful night like this. It’s a local event that’s easy to come to and enjoy.” Marcia Griffiths, best known for singing “Electric Boogie” (aka “The Electric Slide”) closed out the festival. The “Queen of Reggae” was preceded by popular Jamaican singer and composer Glen Washington. While not as well known as Griffiths and Washington, the “King of Salsa Rap” Willie Panama wowed the crowd with his blend of salsa mixed with reggae and calypso. His ensemble included musicians from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Peru and, of course. Panama. Dat 7, a group from Haiti, warmed up the crowd with their fresh take on French and Creole music with some reggae infusions. The chance to see familiar musicians and new artists on the same stage struck a friendly chord with the audience. “When the Caribbean and Jamaican artists come out to sing their songs, it’s all good,” said Alton Andrade of Miramar, who also attended the festival last year. “I come out to support events like this and see a good show.” The balmy summer weather did not deter the crowds as early arrivals set up their lawn chairs and blankets near the stage. Many adults wore shirts and dresses emblazoned with the flags of the countries they were originally from. Lots of kids walked over after playing ball at neighboring parks to blow bubbles or play video games at the U Cube mobile gaming theater. Having held this celebration before, several of Miramar’s departments chipped in to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Miramar police officers ensured festival attendees safety,, MIramar Fire Department cadets kept the place clean and Parks & Recreation Department staff put up stage lights as the sun set and more people streamed in. Those lucky enough to have been born in the Caribbean were surely happy to see such an abundance of home cooking represented. The conch harvest must have been especially rich this year as one could find it prepared every way. Island Boyz Seafood from Key West. Kingston Delight Restaurant and King Creole from Miami were among the booths providing authentic island food, while the Miramar Police Athletic League sold hamburgers and hot dogs. All that deliciousness could be washed down by the Miami Events Group’s mobile cart where adults could get rum drinks made right in front of them and served in a coconut. Attendees who needed to walk off their jerk chicken dinner could peruse stands manned by the 12 Pepper Company selling pepper sauce, as well as vendors selling jewelry, Bob Marley posters, airbrushed artwork and clothing. The City of Miramar set up a booth to sell Relay for Life t-shirts to benefit the American Cancer Society. Anjolique, a musician from Chicago, served as MC, and kept the crowd dancing with assistance from DJ Bankz from Trinidad and Tobago. Annette Roache, representing her home country of Jamaica and wearing her nation’s soccer jersey, has been coming to this celebration for five years straight. “I wanted to see the Jamaican artists and I love the atmosphere here,” the Miramar resident said. “Marcia Griffiths is the highlight. I was walking by and saw the festival signs and called several friends to come with me. It’s a wonderful family event with nice food and a friendly Caribbean atmosphere.”

ocal community leaders joined the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines for a recent meeting as the group installed their new President and Board of Directors and recognized the community service efforts of two city officials. A packed house at 7 Pecados Argentinian restaurant on June 18th saw Therese Homer named as the organization’s President for 2015 and 2016. Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam was given the group’s Paul Harris Fellow Award and Commissioner Yvette Colbourne was presented with the Honorary Rotarian Award for their dedication to public service. LaTessa Hall accepted the award on the Mayor’s behalf as he was attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Former Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti, a Rotarian for over 25 years, gave the keynote address before receiving a pair of Rotary Club cufflinks. “Being in Rotary is the highlight of my career,” he said. “My mother told me that I should always be here to serve others, not to be served. I wish more people in the world would follow Rotary’s principles.” That spirit of service is best exemplified in the many ways that the Rotary Clubs support local and international causes. All funds raised at Rotary events support book giveaways for A.C. Perry Elementary School students in Miramar, counseling for children and families in crisis through Children’s Harbor, extracurricular activities with the Miramar Police Athletic League, scholarships for local high school students, drama training for special needs students in the Exceptional Theater Company, and

weekend meals for families in need through their Pack-A-Sack program. Internationally, Rotary Clubs are best known for their efforts to combat polio but the local group also funds educational programs in Colombia. While those philanthropic efforts initially bring people into the Rotary Club, many people in the crowd were there to support Homer, who retired as the Public Safety Chief of Miami Dade College after serving as a law enforcement officer in Atlanta, Palm Beach and Opa-locka. In attendance was Lonnie Lawrence of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executive’s South Florida Chapter; Commander Tim Belcher of the North Miami Police Department and Patricia Good of the School Board of Broward County. Dr. Carleen Spano, the first woman in Florida to ever join a Rotary Club, also addressed the gathering. “I did the speed limit here,” she joked, noting all the police officers in the crowd. Maria Barker, of the Rotary Club of Allapattah, served as the night’s Mistress of Ceremonies. “It’s very interesting and unique for this club to have a female President,” she noted, upon Homer’s election. “The history of the Rotary Club shows that we have come a long way. Rotary didn’t even have women in the club until a 1987 Supreme Court decision.” The intersection of law enforcement and community service came up quite frequently, as Miramar Chief of Police Ray Black and Assistant Chief Dexter Williams also showed their support. “Seeing the Mayor and Commissioner Colbourne being recognized, it’s an opportunity for us to build on our

partnership with the Rotary Club,” said Chief Black. “We’ve talked about bringing back the “Officer of the Quarter” recognition program and we look forward to working closely with them more in the future.” Those in attendance celebrated all that the organization has accomplished while welcoming the new leadership. “The Rotary Clubs in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties combined have given almost $1 million in college scholarships,” said District Governor-Elect Larry Herman. “That’s making an impact. My passion is service and the lives we’ve saved around the world by nearly eradicating polio.” Many of those milestones were noted by Robert Smyczynski, the outgoing President, who gave out awards for Board of Directors Recognition, Club Service and Perfect Attendance. He spoke about how the club had surpassed their goals for the number of members involved and money raised to help their selected charities. He also presented Ruben Levy with the Rotarian of the Year award. Homer, a Rotarian since 2003, wants to use her new post to get more people involved in the Rotary Club’s charitable projects. “If you want to do some service that’s bigger than service in the local community, then join us,” she said. “We’re global and have been working to eradicate polio. Three-Year-Olds Learn the Basics of How to Play Basketball at Popular Mini-Ball Program BY JILL SHARPE

iramar has found a way for families with young children to stay active over the summer while avoiding the sweltering heat. Mini-Ball, instructional basketball for three year olds, has proven to be quite popular over the three summers it has been offered in the city. The purpose of the Mini-Ball program is to provide a foundation for young children who likely have never played basketball before to grasp the necessary skills to play the sport. Jacqueline Alvarez and Ricardo Gray of Miramar attended Mini-Ball for the first time with their son Adonis. “I thought it would be a great program so we could all get out of the house, have Adonis be around other kids and learn skills to be more coordinated,” said Alvarez. “It’s a good family activity and we wanted to see how he’d react to it.” While some children were reluctant to step out on the basketball court, Adonis had no problem jumping right into the dribbling drills. “I definitely want him to be athletic, so we wanted to see what he gravitated to and embrace that,” said Gray. “I took him to a Marlins game and he has an interest in baseball so when he’s old

enough to play that, we’ll also enroll him in Little League.” Kids who took part in Mini-Ball received their own Nike basketball to take home and put their name on, as well as a trophy at the end of the summer session. Coach Cody Brylski reminded parents to take a long view as they help build up their children’s basketball acumen, noting that it often takes three practices for a kid to really get a skill down. “I want to keep the parents involved as it’s a great bonding experience between them and their kids,” Brylski said. Miramar offers a wide variety of athletic programs for children throughout the year. Pee Wee Basketball registration starts this month for four to seven year olds with the program taking place at both the Youth Education Center (YEC) and Sunset Lakes. The registration fee, which includes uniforms and an end-of-year award, is $50 for Miramar residents and $60 for non-residents. Broward Center Teen Ambassador Program Is Seeking Applications BY JILL SHARPE

he Broward Center for the Performing Arts is seeking high school students with an interest in the performing arts and an aptitude for writing for its Teen Ambassador Program. Miramar High School student Claudia Moncaliano, 17, participated in the program the past two years and said it was an unforgettable experience which provided many unique opportunities. Applications for the 2015-2016 school year are due by August 28th. Up to 24 students will be accepted into the program, which runs from September 2015 - May 2016. It includes guest speakers, master classes, back stage tours, meet and greets with professionals in various career tracks connected to the arts and more. The students attend performances presented at the Broward Center and its affiliated venues. They also provide reviews for postings on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and or Instagram. The students receive at least 10 community service hours each month for their participation. To be considered for a position, students must attend a high school in Broward, Palm Beach or Dade County as of August, 2015; attend one meeting per month at the Broward Center; attend and review at least one performance per month for which tickets are provided by the Broward Center; maintain a minimum “B” average throughout the school year; have access to a computer and have at least one social media account. They must also complete an

application, which includes an essay about why they will be a valuable member of the program, as well as their experience or feelings for or about live performing arts. Moncaliano plans to pursue a career in the performing arts. She is drawn to the arts for a variety of reasons. “What I love about the performing arts is the ability it gives you to astound people with the work you create,” said Moncaliano. “I’ve been blown away by so many of the shows I’ve seen and every time I learn about new creative ways people go about making these shows happen.” Moncaliano said right now she is thinking about possibly going into directing or production. Her Teen Ambassador experience over the last two years gave her the motivation to keep chasing her dreams. “Nowadays, so many people try to steer kids away from careers in the performing arts but this program shows students that there are so many opportunities in this industry”, Moncaliano said. “Some of our experiences, such as meeting performing arts professionals, have gotten a few of my friends into internships and volunteer positions. KAPOW Program Gives Students the Chance to See How City Government Works SCHOOL NEWS

tudents from Sunset Lakes Elementary and New Renaissance Middle School learned valuable lessons about how the City of Miramar operates when they had the opportunity to visit the Miramar City Hall and the Miramar Cultural Center during a Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) program. Students from both schools took part in a mock commission meeting during which they played the roles of the City Commission, a company proposing a water park in the City, and citizens for and against the proposal. Students from both schools also had the

opportunity to discover how concerts and events are produced at the Cultural Center. Additionally, Mayor Wayne M. Messam and Commissioners Maxwell B. Chambers and Yvette Colbourne met with the students from Sunset Elementary to explain how city government works. The lessons learned were just an example of the many benefits students receive from the KAPOW program, which prepares students for success in work and in life, through school and business partnerships that connect students, teachers and schools

with volunteers, their business organizations and the community. KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds said KAPOW volunteers empower students by teaching lessons using fun, interactive mediums like games and role playing. “They are able to influence and shape the minds of students while exposing them to several career options they never knew existed,” said Reynolds. “This program truly bridges the gap between what students learn in school and how it realistically and practically applies to the work world.”

Getting Your Home Priced Correctly When Selling

o you’ve decided to put your home on the market and are tempted to try listing it at a higher price in order to “test the market” to see if you can get what you really desire. I recommend that you think twice prior to making this irrational decision. Research indicates that overpricing your home, while having to decrease the price one or more times while it languishes on the market, frequently leads to selling it at a much lower price than what you originally should have asked for it. UV Eye Protection

To shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV light. Look for sunglasses labeled ‘’UV 400’’, which indicates that they block all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers (which includes both UVA and UVB rays, both known to enter the atmosphere). You also want to choose sunglasses with full eye coverage. Sunglasses with side protection can block dangerous UV rays from coming in through the rear of the sunglasses. New Laws Level the Playing Field for Homeowners Facing Foreclosure By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

ne of the most difficult challenges we face in assisting homeowners through the process of a loan modification, is avoiding the threat of foreclosure, or foreclosure sale of the property we are trying to preserve. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued new mortgage servicing rules designed to protect borrowers when it comes to mortgage loans. These rules became effective a little over one year ago, but many homeowners are unaware of these important changes in the law. Our experience has shown that homeowners that take full advantage of these rules have obtained excellent loan modification results, have been able to stop foreclosure sales, correct escrow and payment issues on their account, and even cancel foreclosure trials.

Under the new rules mortgage servicers are required to implement major changes in the way they do business. A mortgage servicer is the company that collects monthly mortgage payments from borrowers on behalf of the owner of the loan, as well as tracks account balances, manages the escrow account, handles loan modification applications, and pursues foreclosure in the case of defaulted loans. The CFPB now requires mortgage servicers to send more detailed periodic billing statements, provide timely interest rate adjustment notices, promptly credit mortgage payments, provide payoff requests in seven days or less, provide options to force-placed insurance, and quickly resolve errors and provide information requests. The most significant benefit for homeowners from these rules is that it restricts “dual tracking.” Dual tracking is when a mortgage servicer considers a homeowner for a loan modification, and at the same time proceeds with a foreclosure action against that homeowner. Under the new rules, a mortgage servicer cannot start foreclosure until at least four months after the homeowner stops paying the loan to provide the homeowner enough time to pursue a loan modification. If a loan modification application is made, the servicer cannot start foreclosure unless the servicer notifies the borrower that he/she is not eligible for any loan modification, the borrower rejects a loan modification offer, or the borrower fails to comply with a trial modification. Also, if already in foreclosure, the mortgage servicer cannot request final judgement or conduct a foreclosure sale if the homeowner submits a complete loan modification package at least 37 days before a trial, final judgment or foreclosure sale.
