The Gloves Are On to Knock Out Parkinson’s BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
brand new program, Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) has been launched at the Michael-Ann Russell (MAR) JCC in North Miami Beach in an effort to help those living with Parkinson’s disease. The progressive disorder of the nervous system gradually affects movement and symptoms worsen as the condition progresses over time. However, Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) has found that those involved in the program can enhance their daily quality of life and even build impressive power, strength, flexibility and speed by participating in the new classes. It is instructed by coaches who are Certified Personal Trainers and knowledgeable of the disease. The MAR-JCC program was spear-headed by Jennifer Enslein of North Miami Beach. Her husband has been battling Parkinson’s for almost five years and they both wanted to be successful in helping others fight the disease through Rock Steady Boxing. Rock Steady Boxing enables people with Parkinson’s to fight their disease by providing a non-contact boxing-style fitness program that improves their quality of life, sense of efficacy and self-worth. In addition it provides encouragement through a “tough love” approach, inspiring maximum effort, speed, strength, balance and flexibility. Training classes include an exercise program that attacks Parkinson’s at its vulnerable neurological points. Workouts include ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics, and circuit training with the focus on overall fitness, strength training, reaction time, and balance. Boxing works by allowing the body to move in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as

the workout progresses. The classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can lessen their symptoms and lead a happier and healthier life. No boxing experience is necessary and people of all ages may participate. Currently the program has grown exponentially since its inception in such a short time. Boxers, both male and female, range in age from mid-30s to early 90s. “I was drawn to RSB right away because I identify with its overall mission and philosophy,” says Enslein. “Obstacles are inevitable! My thinking is that if we look at an obstacle as an obstacle, it will knock us down. But if we look at an obstacle as a challenge, we will do our darnest to overcome it!” Classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. at the JCC, 18900 NE 25th Ave. in North Miami Beach. The Fulford Fountain is a Memory of the Past to be Preserved for the Future BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument, located just west of Biscayne Boulevard on NE 172 Street which used to be named Fulford Boulevard, is one of South Florida’s oldest and largest fountains. Built in 1925 as part of the development project by the Fulford-by-the-Sea Company, the fountain was planned to be the first of five to be built at each of the main entrances to the North Miami Beach area. However, the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 and the end of the Florida land boom prevented construction. In 2010, the historic fountain was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Fulford by the Sea Entrance. It is also listed as a Dade Historical Site known as the Fulford Monument, the prominent feature of today’s North Miami Beach city logo. For two consecutive years the city of North Miami Beach had requested funding from the state to restore the historical and iconic monument which was constructed prior to the incorporation of the city. Upon asking on the third time, they were successful as both the House and the Senate approved the request and the governor signed the state budget to include the necessary funding. “NMB is proud to have the Fulford Fountain, one of the few 1920’s era landmark entryway gates remaining in all of Florida,” says North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo. “We are delighted it will be restored to its original grandeur in time for our 90th anniversary.” In order to commence the much needed and anticipated restoration, the City teamed up with Richard Heisenbottle. His reputation precedes him as one of the best architects in Florida specializing in Historic Restoration. Heisenbottle worked his magic with the Historic Log Cabin in Biscayne Park as well as other projects such as the Viscaya renovation.

Are You Ready for Some Football? This Miami Gardens Raven Is!

T
he Miami Dolphins strive to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment in an effort to create leaders of tomorrow. The nonprofit organization, Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), dedicates itself to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress while developing meaningful educational programming. Together the two organizations formed an alliance to achieve their similar goals. The perfect partnership shows their dedication to promote positive youth programs in educational systems. An example of their joint venture is a sixteen week awards program which lasts the duration of the Dolphins season. The program recognizes youth football players, coaches and parents who have demonstrated their commitment to being leaders on and off the field. In week eight it was announced that Ryan Mack from the Miami Gardens Ravens 10U of the Florida Youth Football League (FYFL) earned the Youth Player of the Week award. Mack rushed for 50 yards and one touchdown on offense and also contributed five solo tackles as a safety. The Miami Gardens Ravens defeated the Fort Lauderdale Hurricanes 36-0. Mack, a 5th grader, loves the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami football teams. He says he wants to be a football player when he grows up because he’s good at it, and likes playing with others. He also says he likes winning since it feels good.

When asked what it was like to win the award and attend a Dolphins game the ten-year-old said, “I’m proud, because there are so many good football players and I was picked. I was also excited, because it was my first Dolphins’ game.” Each award recipient was presented with a plaque on the field during the Dolphins home game at Hard Rock Stadium against the New York Jets, and received acknowledgement of their accomplishment in the game program and through the Dolphins’ and RISE’s social media platforms. The honorees also received a pair of tickets to a Miami Dolphins home game and a Dolphins/
RISE T-shirt. In addition, winners will participate in a RISE training program which is a new component in the program. Students will learn how to use the unifying power of sport to promote the importance and benefits of unity, equality and inclusiveness as well as address racial tensions their teams, schools and communities might experience. Furthermore, they will be encouraged to take a pledge, committing to stand up to racial inequality and share how they plan to affect change by creating a “How I RISE” video message, which will be posted on RISEtoWIN.org.

ordana Zackon, a senior at Scheck Hillel Community School, has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Program. More than 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), and Zackon placed among the top 5%. “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMCS. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. Children need boundaries AND to be involved with the world around them. Setting a maximum amount of screen-time per day (even per week) is vital. Keep weekdays free of screen-time (unless needed for homework). Maintain family time (meals, reading time before bed) and play time rooted in the physical world. Where technology can add value, bring it in! While on a walk, your child discovers an insect and asks a question. The answer: “I’m not sure, let’s learn about it.” Or, while playing with blocks, your child says, “How are skyscrapers built - I want to make one!” Parent response: “Let’s see how we can do it at home with the materials we have…” Imaginative play develops critical thinking, vocabulary and decisionmaking skills.

Spending time with your children helps to raise well-rounded, well-adjusted adults. Technology adds another variable to the equation, though. AMC Salutes Local Law Enforcement Agencies COMMUNITY NEWS

ach year the Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber (AMC) honors heroic law enforcement officers. These men, women and K9s from 23 law enforcement agencies who risk their lives by serving and protecting their communities each and every day were recognized during the “Salute to Law Enforcement” breakfast in October. The significant event was held at the Newport Beachside Hotel, and hosted by Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Aventura Mayor Enid Weisman and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez were in attendance, as well as Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman, Aventura Hospital CEO Dianne Goldenberg, North Miami Beach and Dr. Michael M. Krop High Schools JROTC and AMC’s Young Star Cameron Wheeler who recently participated in AMC’s Young Star Showcase presented by Mount Sinai Medical Center. The attending officers represented Aventura, Bal
Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Biscayne Park, Coral Gables, Doral, El Portal, FL. Dept. of Law Enforcement, Hollywood, Indian Creek, Key Biscayne, Miami Beach, Miami-Dade North Operations, Miami-Dade Intracoastal District, Miami Gardens, Miami Shores, Miami Springs, North Bay Village, North Miami, North Miami Beach, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach and Surfside. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota and Helfman joined Goldenberg to welcome hundreds of business and community leaders as they all applauded the local law enforcement officers. “For the safety of Aventura Hospital patients and everyone that comes into our building, we rely on our law enforcement departments to help in that partnership,” said Aventura Hospital CEO Dianne Goldenberg. “After becoming a Level Two trauma center, we see the dangers they face. We have a great appreciation for
what they do and their help protecting our community.” A segment of the morning’s agenda featured the JROTC schools performing alongside Cameron Wheeler as she sang a unique rendition of the National Anthem. Following that inspirational performance, the talented singer sang Hero and I Believe I Can Fly as a tribute to the “Best in Blue” program during the awards presentation. Local law enforcement officers and their K9s, along with their respective mayors received their recognition on behalf of Aventura Hospital’s entire administration and staff. Mayor Carlos Gimenez made it a point to state that law enforcement and public safety are the most important things handled in government. Not only is he the Mayor of Miami-Dade, but the Sheriff as well. Previously being a firefighter/paramedic and member of the City of Miami SWAT team made this tribute a personal one. Gimenez went on to say, “The 2.7 million residents of Miami-Dade are served by the finest police departments in the southeast and the U.S. We thank them for the work they do as we honor them today.”

Ketamine infusion therapy successfully treats various types of depression, such as bipolar disorder, manic-depressive depression, as well as postpartum depression. Excellent results have also been seen in treating other debilitating conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic pain from fibromyalgia, TMJ, or PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder). Your treatment center should, of course, tailor the treatment to the condition. Depression hinders the lives of millions of Americans. The hopelessness that comes with the condition devastates not only the individuals suffering from depression, but also the lives of their family and friends. Traditional treatments are fully effective in only 1/3 of patients, another 1/3 have incomplete resolution of their symptoms, and 1/3 have no response at all. Presently, ketamine infusion therapy shows a significant improvement in 80% of cases. So how does it work? As with many anesthetic agents, we do not yet entirely understand how ketamine delivers such amazing results. We do know, however, that it can be tremendously effective even in refractory cases (where traditional medications have failed). Some of the research indicates that an increase in the neurotransmitter called glutamic acid repairs or reforms previously damaged or unresponsive synapses. Those malfunctioning synapses would have normally resulted in depression. The treatments involve a series of infusions performed in a controlled monitored environment. Typically each infusion takes about an hour. During this time the patient will experience a sensation of dissociation, much like very vivid dreams. Some have described this as an out of body experience. These effects are mild since the dosage used is much lower than that used for anesthesia. Many studies have reported mood improvements almost immediately, or within hours of the therapy. In general, there is a starting protocol of several infusions in a short period of time, called the acute treatment phase. This normally involves five treatments given over five days, after which the patient can look forward to “booster” infusions every few months. When seeking a treatment center, patients should prioritize one with firstly the correct licenses and privileges to administer ketamine. Furthermore, the center should offer patients a high level of privacy and professional supervision. At last, we have an alternative to unreliable traditional therapies. Ketamine gives patients a new hope for depression!

he exuberance of the holiday season makes it seem different from the rest of the year. The hustle and bustle and the excitement seem to be more apparent in everything. People are traveling more frequently, carrying more cash, making more big purchases, and often more distracted by the holiday buzz. Law enforcement departments reveal that, when the tipping point of holiday shopping enthusiasm is reached with Black Friday extending to Thanksgiving and Small Business Saturday, crimes increase substantially by 30%. Unfortunately, the joy and the cheer of the holiday season dissipate instantly due to unsavory, unscrupulous characters in society who intentionally prey on their good spirits. To lessen the dispirited effects of the holiday robberies, burglaries, the North Miami Beach Police Department wants to remind you that you do not need to change what you do on a regular basis to keep your loved ones safe; it simply requires more attention to the same safety and security tips you should follow all year in order to avoid becoming the next victim of a holiday hustler. Below are simple tips to share with others: DRIVING: ▸▸ Keep all doors locked and windows closed while inside or outside of your vehicle. ▸▸ Never leave your vehicle unoccupied with the engine running and/or with children inside. ▸▸ Do not leave packages/ valuables on the seat of your vehicle. ▸▸ Store packages in your trunk and park your vehicle in a well-lit area. ▸▸ Have your keys ready when approaching your vehicle. ▸▸ Be aware of your surroundings near your vehicle. ▸▸ Do not drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs. AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE (ATM): ▸▸ When withdrawing funds from an ATM after dark, have someone accompany you. ▸▸ If you see anyone loitering near the ATM, walk away. ▸▸ Upon arrival, have your bank card ready in hand. ▸▸ Apply your avoidance skills by looking around from time to time. If anything suspicious occurs, immediately cancel your transaction and leave. ▸▸ Never leave your receipt in the ATM. SHOPPNG: ▸▸ Shop during daylight hours, whenever possible. ▸▸ Pay for purchases with a check/credit card; avoid carrying large amount of cash. ▸▸ If your credit card is lost, stolen or misused, notify the credit card issuer immediately. ▸▸ Be extra careful if you carry a wallet or a purse; they are the prime targets of criminals in shopping areas. AT HOME: ▸▸ Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house, even if for a few minutes. ▸▸ Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. ▸▸ Have the keys to the front door of your residence ready before entering. ▸▸ Lock your front door immediately after entering your home. ▸▸ In general, the holidays require you to amplify the safety and security measures that help you stay off the radar of those who would to take advantage of you when you let your guard down. He likes people, other canines and the park, but dislikes getting bathed and groomed. He especially dislikes clothing. The Olympia Gym & Fitness Center hosted a breast cancer charity event during the nationally dedicated awareness month for the cause. Members and guests put on their pink gear and were able to get a great work out while raising $500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
CARING & SHARING - Yvonne Murillo, Dr. Randy Gould, Dr. Mark Sabbota, Dr. Moises Issa, Dr. Stefani Green, and Dr. Isaac Vargas from Primary Care Physicians showed their support for Our Father’s House Soup Kitchen. The practice made a donation to help raise funds for a new roof and to cover costs for the 250 meals the kitchen serves daily.
