New Year Brings New Beginnings

ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! Post 92, she exclaimed, “It is because of the bravery of such soldiers as the Commander, that I can stand here, wearing a dress on a stage in front of a crowd more mixed than a salad!” The Commander then gave a passionate speech about diversity which received much applause from the crowd. An unexpected visit from the Catz Stageplayers was a last minute surprise highlight to the show. These talented high school performers sang a number of patriotic songs before breaking out into their signature show tunes. he City of Hollywood along with Mayor Peter Bober honored men and women who currently serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces by hosting the “6th Annual Veterans Barbeque”. In attendance was Mayor Peter Bober, then Mayor elect Josh Levy, Commissioners Traci Callari, Richard Blattner, Kevin Biederman, Linda Sherwood and Commissioner-elect Debra Case. Also in attendance was Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez, Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez, and Assistant City Managers Gus Zambrano and George Keller. The free event was held on the national holiday at TY Park. Besides serving up great food, the City of Hollywood Veterans Barbeque also featured music by DiXoN, a wall of honor where veterans and their families were able to display photos of local service heroes, and a banner plane flying above with a message of gratitude.

Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez said, “We owe our freedom to our veterans and to the men and woman of our armed forces and this barbecue is the least we can do.” Mayor Bober started this annual tradition in 2011 when he set forth to make plans to honor United States service members. Later that year, the City of Hollywood hosted the first Veterans Barbeque. For the past 5 years, Mayor Bober has worked the grill while other members of the Hollywood City Commission joined with volunteers to serve a free barbeque lunch to local veterans, service members and their families. “It is an important day to recognize veterans and the hard working that they do to keep us safe, and give us the liberties that we so enjoy in this country of being able to, as we just recently did, to cast a vote not only for our local leaders but for the leader of the greatest county in the free world,” stated Police Chief Tomas Sanchez, who is also a U.S. Army veteran.

All Hollywood military personnel, veterans and their families were invited to this special event to celebrate their service. A traditional BBQ menu was offered featuring barbeque chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, corn, cookies and brownies as well as an assortment of beverages. Jaxson’s Ice Cream supported the event once again and provided complimentary scoops of its world famous ice cream. “This event is a great way for us to thank our veterans, some of which have never been thanked for their military service, said Mayor Bober. “It is a very emotional day, a prideful day, and a fun day. It’s a great way to show the next generation that veterans matter and their service really is why we enjoy the freedoms we have in this country.”

he Humane Society of Broward County’s largest fundraiser, “Walk for the Animals”, will be held on March 18, 2017 at Huizenga Plaza in downLauderdale. It’s High Energy at Driftwood Middle School as They Get Down Low Again for the 4th Annual Miami Heat Challenge BY BEVERLY PERKINS

n 2008, Driftwood Middle School’s “Green Team” was born. This environmental group of students was lead, and still, is by their Physical Education and Wellness teacher, Linda Gancitano. This amazing educator was the innovator in the creation of the club. She single-handedly gathered a team of teachers and students to collect environmental data to earn national sustainability awards. Gancitano then initiated a district-wide energy reduction project with other Broward County educators and partnered with The Miami Heat to commence the “How Low Can You Go? Energy Challenge” to reduce energy consumption. The project’s purpose is to raise awareness and change behaviors in an environment to support the rising concern of climate change. Students are empowered to cut energy, waste, and water use in their classrooms through a district-wide competition. For the fourth consecutive year, the Miami Heat has not only challenged Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County Public Schools, they have expanded through the entire state along with the Florida Green Schools Network and the CLEO Institute to find innovative ways to reduce energy and water consumption at each campus. Last year 87 schools participated reducing energy use by 1,501,957 KWH and saving $126,754 during a three-month challenge period.

Through Driftwood’s greening initiative, “How Low Can You Go? Challenge”, the NBA team is enticing the schools to raise environmental awareness of CO2 emissions and to educate the facilities about potential financial savings through responsible energy consumption. Through all their efforts Driftwood Academy of Health and Wellness has become a United States Department of Education (US DOE) Green Ribbon School, as well as a Healthier Generations NMB Green Week 2016 School. Winning teams will be recognized at games during NBA Green Week this spring and will receive prizes that include: ▸ Miami Heat “How Low Can You Go?” Championship Banner and Plaque ▸ Tickets and recognition of the winning school at a Miami Heat game ▸ Miami Heat pep rally at the winning school featuring mascot Burnie Last year Gancitano was named a White House Climate Education on Literacy “Champion of Change” for enhancing climate education at Driftwood Middle School Academy of Health and Wellness and throughout the Broward County Public School district. She recently returned from the White House for a Champion of Change reunion. “We are really excited and we still want our schools to reduce the most and have a great impact on the environment,” says Gancitano.

hoosing the school that is best for your child is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. School becomes a family’s second home, as children spend most of their day on campus. Your first step is to visit a prospective school. Spend time walking the halls. Do you feel a positive energy among the students and teachers? Do they seem motivated and happy? Talk to students when you visit, and ask them what they like about their school. If you feel the enthusiasm in their answers, they are happy. Happy students are successful students. Observe the culture and social climate, and form your own opinion. Prioritize you child’s needs, and see if you can picture him/her in this environment. The school’s approach to learning should focus on the individual child, guided by a forward-thinking philosophy to maximize opportunity and foster identity. You should see students and teachers engaged with one another. Their relationships should feel warm and safe. Teachers should be hands-on: walking students through a lesson, in the cafeteria having a conversation with a student or facilitating a club as an advisor. They should be sparking imagination, creativity and innovation: in a lab or class, in stage wings or on sidelines. When you visit, try to meet a guidance counselor, teachers and a member of leadership. Remember they will spend more hours of the day with your child than you will, throughout the years ahead. There are some specific elements to look for in preschool and elementary grades. Early years are about learning through play so classroom centers (from art to science), a nice, safe playground, recess and physical education are a must. Young children are discovering language, and soaking up every word! There should be books and libraries in classrooms for children to turn the pages of new chapters, cultivating personal and academic growth. When looking at middle and high school, focus on teacher engagement and the school’s academic track record. Are teachers regularly available for students before, during and after school? Are they involved with student life? Are the extra-curricular activities of interest to your child? Enrichment offerings should include many opportunities. Ask about their record over a period of years for SATs, ACTs, AP exams and achievements in academics like AP Scholar Awards and the National Merit Scholars Program, as well as accomplishments in arts, athletics, community service and leadership. Get a feel for their approach to college counseling; an understanding of students’ needs and interests should be paired with counselors’ knowledge and expertise. Most of all, one of the best ways to learn about a school is to have your child spend a day there while school is in session. Your child’s thoughts and feelings are of utmost importance and should come first. Not every school is for every child. Look for the school that best fits your child’s and family’s needs, interests and expectations. Follow your instinct, and go with your gut. You’ll know when you’ve come home.

do your training? I was born in Nicaragua and raised in Miami. I went on to receive a minor in Chemistry with a Bachelor in Biological Science from Florida State University. I then received my Medical Degree from Ross University School of Medicine. I did a one year internship in Family Practice at Prince George’s Hospital in Maryland and went on to do a three year residency in Internal Medicine at Crozer Chester Hospital affiliated with Temple University in Philadelphia.

oday a growing number of men are seeing cosmetic surgeons for procedures specifically tailored to meet their unique needs. More than ever, men are making the choice to improve their appearance with the use of Botox, fillers and cosmetic procedures. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), male plastic surgery rates have significantly increased since 2000 and the notion that cosmetic procedures are just for women no longer exists. Wrinkles don’t just affect women, so it only makes sense that both men and women can use these treatments. Often times, men are seeking to regain a more youthful look, improve their self-image, maintain their edge, and feel better about their appearance. Plastic surgeons have procedures to meet and often exceed their expectations. A little Botox or filler can rid the face of fine lines, marionette lines, crow’s feet, brow furrows and other signs of aging or sun damage. Wrinkles are not the only thing Botox is used for — often men use products such as Botox to decrease sweating, or hyperhidrosis, in the armpits or hands. Specifically, Bro-tox, which is the name given for male Botox injections, is on the rise as it is one of the most subtle non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedures on the market. The procedure is fast, virtually painless, and easy. Botox injections leave no signs of having “work done,” so men are able to keep the so called “character” but lose the lines, resulting in a smoother, lifted and relaxed appearance without facing the stigma associated with cosmetic procedures. According to the ASPS, in 2011 there was a 56% increase in minimally invasive procedures such as Botox injections and fillers in males. Increasingly, a number of guys are considering non-invasive cosmetic procedures to appear more approachable, to stay competitive in an ever younger and competitive workforce, and to generally increase their overall confidence. Although the application technique is similar for these procedures it should be noted that men and women have very differing facial anatomy. Men’s skin is thicker, with more oil glands and more hair than female skin, and the aging process is different in the two genders. Women, in their younger years, have more fat pads in their faces, and as time marches on the fat pads diminish and the skin begins to sag. Because men have less dense fat pads, the sagging process isn’t as apparent, but stronger muscles in the forehead and around the eyes can lead to deeper, etched lines in men. As such, men can be treated with the same Botox techniques as women, but often require more units to treat the larger muscles in their face. Forehead lines require care in men so consideration should be given to the masculine brow when treating men. As usual, using an experienced master injector is always important. CANDY CANE PARADE

Hollywood Beach’s longest running annual parade got everyone in the holiday spirit on a beautiful South Florida evening last month.

The 13th annual fundraiser supporting the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital raised $312,000 for patients, families, programs, services and facilities at the well-respected Hollywood hospital. The themed “Pirates of the Caribbean” event was enjoyed by all who attended in late fall.
