s hard as it is to believe , another year is
quickly drawing to a close. Summer vacation is now a mere memory. We’ve crashed from the Halloween sugar rush. With cooler nights ahead, we can enjoy the beauty of South Florida’s fall season. As the month of November takes hold, we begin to look forward to the coming holiday season. While families everywhere are busy making preparations for a delicious Thanksgiving feast, our Jewish friends will simultaneously celebrate Hanukkah as well, making this year a truly joyous time of togetherness. While we sit down this holiday season with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. cademy of Arts offers a warm, caring, family environment where students have an opportunity to nurture their love of the arts at a low fee of $45.00 per month. The entire faculty is made up of highly qualified, certified instructors, who have dedicated their entire life to the arts. The staff brings their passion for the arts, knowledge and experience to each and every student enrolled at the Academy.
Director Rebeca Russo-Columna is involved in the enhancement of each and every student. She is at the Academy from opening to closing and the students can benefit from her extensive training and experience. She started dancing at the age of 5 and at an early age was on scholarship with Miami Ballet and danced professionally for the Opera Guild. At the age of 13, she was awarded a full merit scholarship from the Ford Foundation to attend National Academy of Dance in Champaign, Illinois. At that point she resolved to be a dancer and attended their boarding school. She was also awarded first place in the United States Merit Scholarship Competition for 3 consecutive years. While attending the boarding school, she also received scholarships to attend Banff Centre School of Fine Arts in Canada. While in Canada, she was spotted by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet director, and was invited to dance at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and began touring with the company at the age of 16. Rebeca has performed in Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Grand Pas de Quatre (Taglioni), Paquita, Swan Lake, Sylphides, Giselle, Nutcracker, Monkayo, Strike Up The Band and Exuberance, to name a few. Her passion has always been in classical ballet however, due to her vast training in all fields, she also appeared in many televised events, music videos, and commercials with well-known entertainers including Don Johnson, Willie Nelson, Paul Shaffer, Jay Leno, Barbara Eden and many more. After spending numerous years dancing professionally, teaching and choreographing for special events and dance venues, Academy of Arts was founded in 1994. Knowing how important it is to receive excellent training at an early age, she decided to pass this along to students that also have the desire to learn from the best in the field. She understands how important it is for a classical ballerina to train in different areas in order to expand possibilities and be successful in the arts. With this in mind, she is always open to hiring the best, regardless of cost. She offers this training to her students at a fraction of the cost, since she was blessed with many opportunities at an early age to do what she loved. Families feel it is an honor to be part of this school, having all of this knowledge under one roof. Tuition is paid year-round in order to hold a coveted spot at this Academy. Academy of Arts offers instruction for ages 3 to professional in: Ballet, Pointe, Pas de Deux, Jazz, Tap, Flamenco, Modern, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre, Voice, Piano, Violin and Guitar. There are a variety of dance styles available for the more serious students or others wishing to pursue a professional career. In Ballet alone, the Academy has five in-house instructors and incorporates elements of the French, Italian and Russian schools of training. Students are taught by teachers from top companies such as: Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Nacional
Actual Students from our Academy and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. With their strong ballet base, the students are also taught other art forms with a variety of teachers to enhance and prepare them for a professional career. The focus at the Academy is not on dance recitals or competitions, but rather the training offered by an excellent year-round education. There are no recital fees, no rehearsal fees, no minimum ticket purchases for performances and no high-priced tickets to purchase. The Academy’s Performing Group is made up of students that have volunteered their time to be a part of shows performed throughout the year. Since this is a performing art, we hold fundraisers in order to give students the opportunity to perform in venues such as: Disney, Epcot, Century Village, Senior Focal Point, Miramar Cultural Center, Bailey Concert Hall and other community events. The children are not auditioned, but rather given a chance to enjoy the art of dance. All costumes are purchased by Miss Rebecca and given to the dancers at no cost. The Academy’s Dance Company is comprised of very talented young dancers that have been auditioned to be a part of this special program. The Company represents a dancing group of the community and for the community. It is an intense program which includes training in all areas of dance needed to prepare the students for a professional career. These dancers are not only taught by the staff at the Academy, but are also given the opportunity to work with guest artists and are encouraged to receive training in all areas to help them reach their full potential. They perform in the annual Holiday Show and yearly recital. There is no additional cost to be a part of the dance company. In the past, many of the Academy’s graduating students had to choose between obtaining a college degree and pursuing a career in dance. The Academy of Arts Professional Company, Metropolitan Ballet of Florida, gives local professionals and talented artists the opportunity for employment. M.B.F. also gives former students employment opportunities, while they continue to train and receive compensation. Students of Academy of Arts have been accepted to some of the most prestigious schools in the country including: The Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Orlando Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Washington Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Nutmeg Conservatory, Walnut Hill, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey and the Rock. They have also earned scholarships to American Heritage, The Chicago College for the Performing Arts, Hartt School of Music, Florida State University, New World School of the Arts, University of Central Florida and more. Prestige Adventure Families Have Fun at Ron Bergeron’s Ranch By Debby Teich

ranch was recently the site of a Prestige Adventure, the Prestige Club’s monthly event for families with children that are chronically ill. The ranch was filled with more than 500 families that were laughing and having fun together. “We provide families with the opportunity to come together and enjoy a Children have fun at the day without worries,” said Prestige Adventures event at Ron Bergeron’s ranch. Polly Wilkie, who founded the club in 1996. At the event, families attended a show to learn about some of the critters that live in the Everglades. They spent time in the petting zoo, jumped in the bounce houses, got their faces painted, watched a magic show, and more. They also enjoyed lunch and a surprise appearance by Ooopsy the Clown. Every child received a backpack filled with school supplies. This was just one of the many Prestige Adventures events offered throughout the year. Some of the oth-
ers include picnics, sporting events, party houses, ice skating, bowling, and more. All of them are designed to make every child feel special and to let them know that they are loved by many people. They give families the rare chance to feel “normal” by experiencing fun activities and sharing information with others that may face similar challenges. The Prestige Club is a not for profit 501c3 networking organization that works closely with a variety of non-profit organizations in Broward County. It provides business leaders with the opportunity to promote their services and skills to the community, as they help organize fundraising, charity, and educational events to benefit families and children in need. The members offer their love, compassion, support, and assistance. On November 23, at C.B. Smith Park, the Prestige Club will host the 6th Annual Bart Reed Love Fest Picnic, an event started in memory of Wilkie’s son. More than 4,000 children and adults, recommended by 28 different nonprofits in the area, will enjoy food, fun, games, music, arts and crafts, face painting, and more. Free Workshop Connects Baby Boomers with Volunteer Opportunities By Debby Teich

here are more than 77 million baby boomers - born between 1946 and 1964. As a group, they are healthier and more highly skilled than previous generations, and will spend more active years in retirement. Encore Connect is helping Boomers match their interests and skills with opportunities for civic engagement through Re-imagine Your Future Workshops, which are offered in a variety of locations each month. The next one will be held on November 14, at the Broward County Library - Davie/Cooper City, from 10:45am to 3:45pm. “Most people consider the financial aspect of retirement, but not what they will do with their time,” said Sue Pollack, Encore Connect Program Coordinator. “They are looking for a good reason to get up each day, besides golf and lunch.” The free one-time workshops are limited to 25 participants. Through a variety

of introspective exercises that build on each other, participants have an opportunity to review, reflect, and make a plan for the “encore years” after full-time employment. “The workshops encourage individuals to find personal fulfillment and explore creative options,” said Pollack. “Participants always learn surprising things about themselves. I don’t know anyone who has not gotten something out of the workshop.” By the end of workshop, participants are able to put the pieces together to determine a path forward. If it involves a desire to volunteer, the Encore Connect staff will set up a separate one-on-one meeting to find opportunities that make the most of their talents and skills, and support a cause they love. They will be placed in positions in nonprofit organizations and government agencies throughout Broward, such as Take Stock in Children, Guardian Ad Litem, and Broward County Library. Many of the participants enjoyed the one-time workshop so much that they formed the Networking and Membership Council. The group meets each month to socialize, listen to guest speakers and more. “It is another opportunity for people to get together to socialize and network,” said Pollack. “They make connections and help each other.” Encore Connect is a Re-engage for Good program made possible by support from the Antoinette Sherman Fund and Julia C. Baldwin Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward. The Broward County Library - Davie/Cooper City is located at 4600 S.W. 82 Avenue, in Davie. Cooper City Moms and Sons Spend Quality Time Together By Debby Teich
C
ooper City moms and their sons recently gathered for
the Mother Son Night of Fun at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2002, this hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons, K – 5th grade, to enjoy a special evening together. Many of them return year after year. Approximately 80 people attended. They played a variety of in-house games that were geared to the “sports” theme, such as football and basketball toss, shuffleboard and ladder ball. After dancing to the tunes of a DJ, the group enjoyed a delicious dinner. Everyone was awarded candy treats and each of the sons received a themed trinkets. “Creating memories with your children are important,” said Lynda Bragg Good, Director Cooper City Recreation Department. “We hope our events add positive memories for both the mom and son.” On November15, Cooper City dads will have their turn at the Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance held at Pioneer Middle School. The event, for ages 2nd grade and up, includes dinner, dancing and entertainment. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. Grandparents Day was established nationally in 1978 and Cooper City residents have been celebrating the holiday since 2007. Q&A with Michael & Marissa
1. What makes the gymnastics programs at TAG USA different? In the four years that we have owned the gym, TAG USA has transformed into a very popular and successful gym. Class Directors Elizabeth Geraci and Coach Luis Lopez have our classes very well organized with lesson plans and quality mature coaches. Our competitive teams are competing head to head against other local gyms and have great success. At the October competitions at Celebrate America and Gold Rush, TAG USA finished in First Place in Levels 2, 3, and 4 versus most of the other local gyms. The success of our teams comes directly from our quality recreational classes.
2. Tell us about the amazing past year for TAG USA! Everyone knows about our back to back state championships in 2012 and 2013 and our girls and boys regional champs. In 2013, TAG USA had our first Boys National Champion Qualifier and the gym’s first NATIONAL CHAMPION. This summer Olympic Gold medallist Aly Raisman worked out our team girls and visited our classes and summer camp kids. Other famous visitors included Olympian Scott Johnson, Olympic Coach Miles Avery, and US National Team Coach Luminita Garcy.
3. How does having the largest gym benefit a young athlete? All gyms in this area, even ones with large programs, are in a small facility. TAG USA has a large and popular gym, which allows us to have much more space with more equipment. Our class groups get more training time and repetitions because they do not share equipment like in other gyms.
What also makes us different is that all parents have front row seats to watch their children and our class schedules run concurrently for the convenience of families with multiple children.
4. How has TAG USA’s unique programs changed gymnastics in the area? Other gyms have tried to copy our success, but TAG USA invests in quality coaches and has a one-of-a-kind facility. Our unique ideas have included presenting every athlete with a medal at the end of their class session, having free newborn and mommy classes, which are open to the community, and having the lowest prices for classes and teams. TAG USA has always been a USAG gym and we are happy to see other gyms change to a USAG program. Besides having the best facility, we are different because we actually train our coaches properly, use lesson plans to evaluate skills, and have managers that monitor every class.
5. What do you recommend for parents who are searching for a recreational program? I tell parents to visit all of the local gyms and compare the cleanliness and safety of the facility, the organization of class programs, success in teams, and our special prices.

Davie/Cooper City Prepare for Annual Holiday Celebrations By Debby Teich

he winter holiday season is upon us and there are many ways
for area residents to celebrate with friends and family.

♦ During the week of November 18, at the 25th Annual Winter Holiday Tree, Menorah and Kinara Decorating Contest, school and civic groups will start decorating the menorahs, kinaras and holiday trees that line the entrance to the Davie Town Hall. Last year, approximately 45 schools and civic groups participated in this holiday event. They will have an opportunity to make all of their own decorations. The Town will provide the lights, holiday trees, menorahs and kinaras. A holiday lunch will be served. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorations.
♦ On December 1, bring the family to
Davie’s Annual Holiday Lighting of the Greens at Town Hall. Watch the Mayor and Town Council turn on over 200,000 holiday lights and decorations to officially proclaim it “holiday time” in Davie. Visit a display of over 50 beautifully adorned holiday trees, menorahs, and kinaras, as you enjoy free refreshments. For those who miss snow, 20 tons of the “white stuff” will be blown for the children to enjoy during the event.

At 6:15pm, the Jingle Bell Parade will begin and the South Florida Trail Riders will parade their decorated horses down Orange Drive, between SW 67th and Rodeo Way. Santa Claus will also arrive on a fire engine. After the parade, residents can have their pictures taken with Santa in the Town Hall Building, for a small fee, or just visit with the big guy for free. There will be free bounce houses, climbing walls, entertainment, and more. The winners of the tree decorating contest will also be announced.

♦ On December 6, the City of Cooper City will kick off the holiday season
with Light Up Cooper City, from 6 to 9 pm, at Cooper City’s Memorial Park, located between City Hall and the Community Center on 90th Ave. Take a stroll in the park and enjoy the mini twinkle lights and luminaire candles, community youth performances, children’s activities and indoor craft show. Children, ages one to eight, can also visit with Santa at the gazebo. Bring canned food items to benefit the needy. Donation boxes will be located next to the stage and inside the Community Center. Equestrian in Southwest Ranches, recently participated in the annual Camp Fox Lea Plain Brown Paper Wrapper Horse Show in Venice, Florida. Crystal Valentine, Charlotte Rowe, Lucie Rowe and Daniella Santor all left the show as champions. Although the show has an “AA” rating, which is the United States Equestrian Federation’s highest rating, it also has a fun atmosphere. It includes “themes” games, contests, costumes, and parties. Riders can decorate their team’s stable; dress themselves and their horses in elaborate costumes; form teams for “Color War” competitions and scavenger hunts, and much more. The four girls range in age from 7 to 13. Two of the girls, Lucie and Charlotte Rowe, are sisters who live in Missouri and commute several times each year to train. Crystal Valentine commutes several times weekly from Naples, Florida to train. Local student Daniella Santor was unable to compete at the show due to a sprained ankle, but attended in an assistant role to help her teammates with specialized grooming and preparation for their classes. “I couldn’t be more proud of my riders and our ponies,” said Gemini Brittany Pledger, who trains the girls. “These students train hard year-round to mentally and physically prepare themselves and their ponies for horse showing. It isn’t easy, but it’s rewarding when the big payoff happens. Everything came together. We had a very successful show.

14th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair Returns By Debby Teich

to gather to enjoy fun, food and festivities at the 14th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair on December 7, at 1pm. The parade will start at the entrance to Forest Ridge and run west towards Old Orchard Rd. It is a great way to meet your neighbors and spend time with friends and family,” said Joan Steinmetz, who is co-chairing the event with her husband, Ken, for the second year. The theme of this year’s parade is “Holidays around the World.” It will include floats, classic cars, dignitaries, marching bands and more. It is not too late to help decorate a float, ride on one, or enter your own. Friends and neighbors have created floats by
decorating cars, boats, bicycles, scooters and even dogs. The parade committee will award prizes for the best floats. More than 40 groups are expected to participate. They will throw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that line the streets. Some of this year’s VIPs will include the Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilwoman Susan Starkey, local school principals, the Police & Fire Chiefs of Davie, the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Seminole Indian Princesses, marching bands, local beauty queens, the Grinch, Santa and more. The parade is also sponsoring a food drive with the Hope Outreach Center. Anyone who donates food will receive a free raffle ticket. In addition, the

GFWC Women’s Club to Paint Business Windows with Holiday Themes By Debby Teich

the GFWC Women’s Club of West Broward can help. For a small fee, the women will bring stencils of a Santa, snowman, reindeer and other holiday items to decorate your window. The money is used to support the organization’s charities. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together

local women’s clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. It has 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries. The West Broward club was established in 1990. It meets at the Pine Island Community Center in Davie, on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, from 7pm to 9pm. Although there are only 13 members, all of them are very active in the club. “The club is the best kept secret in Davie,” said Marie Ambrosino, club president, who was one of the initial members of the West Broward club. “It is a very nice group of women who are interested in making a difference in the community. We are a very friendly group and love to have fun.” Although the club supports GFWC’s projects at the state and national level, such as domestic violence, most of its efforts are in the Davie area. Last year, the club gave $250 to graduating seniors at Nova High School, Cooper City High School and Western High School. The club plans to award scholarships again this year. Members also volunteer for a variety of Davie events, such as the Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo; Spring Festival, Egg Hunt & International MultiEthnic Festival; Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo, and more. They will be selling baked goods at the Town of Davie Green Fair and Holiday Craft Show this month. They support the Wildlife Care Center in Ft. Lauderdale. They also adopted a dolphin and manatee at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon Key. Every year, they take a field trip to visit the dolphin and have some fun. Annual dues are $40. Town Of Southwest Ranches’ Website Has A New Look By Debby Teich

he Town of Southwest R anches
is home to approximately 7,000 residents. In an effort to keep them more connected, the Town recently updated its website, www.southwestranches.org, with a new userfriendly format. “The new website has a wealth of information,” said Erika Santamaria, CMC, Town Clerk. “Visitors to the site can find out the Town, boards, Council meeting dates and times, Town resolutions, special events and more.” It took approximately six months to develop the new website, which was launched in August. The website is still a work in progress, but Santamaria says that the overall feedback has been very positive so far. On the home page, visitors can scroll through a list of all of the latest Town news. Davie Youth Lacrosse Opens Registration for 2014 Season By Debby Teich
N
icknamed “ the fastest sport
on two feet,” lacrosse combines basketball, soccer and hockey. It continues to grow in popularity in South Florida, especially since it became sanctioned at the high school level. Davie Youth Lacrosse is now registering players for the 2014 season, which runs from January to April. “The kids love lacrosse, because it is action-packed with plenty of scoring,” said Pete Dunne, who co-founded the Davie program with Shaun Bamforth in 2008. “Athletes of all ages, skills and sizes can play the sport. It is very easy for new players to pick up the game, especially if they start at a young age.” The program is organized and run by the Davie Youth Lacrosse Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 charitable organization. Davie Youth Lacrosse is a “travel” recreation program, with a focus on giving players of all skill levels a quality learning experience and an opportunity to have fun playing the game. Players are taught improved agility, conditioning, team work, and the skills necessary to play lacrosse. They are also taught to respect the game, as well as the other players. Davie Youth Lacrosse has approximately 340 boys and girls, in grades kindergarten to 9th, who play on 17 teams. They practice twice per week, with games on Saturdays against other recreational lacrosse teams throughout South Florida.
Practices and home games are held at Bamford Park in Davie. Experience is not a requirement to join -- just a willingness to learn and have fun. To encourage new players to try the game, the program has loaner gear available for younger players. It is also offering a free clinic for new players on November 30, from 9am to 11am, at Bamford Park. Players will have an opportunity to throw, catch, and shoot. From December 2 to 12, there is also an advanced training program for new and experienced players. More information is available at www.faststartlacrosse.com. Many of the players who have been through the program are now playing at high schools throughout South Florida, as well as for colleges and universities. “Our players have been recognized inside and outside the state of Florida for the skills they have learned and developed in the program,” said Dunne. Dunne says they are always looking for coaches, with or without experience. They will teach the volunteers everything they need to know about the game. Girl Scouts Clean Up Butterfly Garden at Griffin Elementary By Debby Teich

hen members of G irl Scout Troop 11139 from N ew R iver noticed
that the butterfly garden at Griffin Elementary School was overgrown, they decided to spruce it up. It is now a beautiful garden for the school to use as a teaching tool and for the community to enjoy. “Griffin Elementary has done so much for our troop and the girls wanted to find a way to give back to the school,” said Jennifer Goldfarb, New River Recruiter for Troop 11139. There are 13 girls in the troop and most of them attend third grade at Griffin Elementary. They adopted the garden as a troop project and pull weeds twice a year. The garden recently became too overgrown to manage, so they turned to local businesses for help. The troop received a variety of donations, including: 25 bags of mulch from Walmart in Pembroke Pines; $50 gift card to purchase plants from Walmart in Cooper City; plants from Winn Dixie in Cooper City; plants from Home Depot in Cooper City, and more. The girls knew that they could not complete the project alone, so they reached out to their families and some other Girl Scout troops to help with the effort. Together, they spent two hours weeding, tilling soil, planting, mulching and adding an edge. “The garden looks so different now,” said Goldfarb. “As soon as we finished, the butterflies filled the garden looking for food.” Most of the girls in the troop have been together since pre-k. They meet twice a month at the Cooper City Community Center. They participate in a variety of fun activities, as well as community service projects. They have camped out at the Museum of Science, Lion Country Safari, and the Palm Beach Zoo; participated in a dance clinic with the Florida Panthers Ice Dancers; volunteered at nursing homes and much more.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! any of my customers are interested in shut-
ters. Below are two common questions and the advice I give them. I don’t want to block my view, because we face the lake. What can I do? ▸▸ Choose 4 ½” louvers instead of 2” louvers for maximum view and light. (We feature 2”, 31/2” & 4” louvers on display. Come see which you prefer.) ▸▸ Select rear tilt so you don’t have the front tilt bar running down the middle of your shutter panel. From the picture, you can appreciate how much more of a contemporary appeal the shutter has by eliminating the front tilt bar. ▸▸ Trust your professional shutter company to advise you on where to place the divider rails. In the picture, note how high this divider rail is so it does not obstruct your view. Typically, you require a divider rail on a panel taller than 60” for structural stability of the shutter. ▸▸ You can leave the top louvers open for light and air, but close the bottom ones for privacy. That is what makes shutters so versatile. How do I cover my sliding door? ▸▸ Choose between By-Pass sliding panels or Bi-Fold shutters. ▸▸ By-Pass will slide just as your

Doc, I Have An Eye Stigma! By Inna Ozerov, MD
I
n the last issue , we dis cussed what a cataract is and how it’s removed. Today, I would like to talk to you about the intraocular lens implants (IOLs) that get inserted into the eye during cataract surgery. To review, the eye houses a natural crystalline lens, whose function is to focus light on the back part of the eye. When this lens starts to lose its clarity and becomes cloudy, we call it a cataract. Just like a dirty lens inside a camera creates an unfocused image, the same occurs inside the eye. The only way to permanently treat this problem is with cataract extraction. When the cataract is removed, it is exchanged for an intraocular lens implant (IOL), a clear artificial lens that stays in the eye permanently and does an excellent job of focusing light. There are various types of IOLs that can correct different types of vision problems. Monofocal IOLs are used commonly during cataract surgery. Monofocal lenses address the basic issues of vision correction; however, it is not uncommon for a patient to require glasses even after surgery with this type of lens. This lens is not able to correct conditions such as astigmatism or presbyopia (the need for reading glasses). And now the exciting news! The dreaded “stigma,” in our ophthalmology circles is known as ASTIGMATISM. Astigmatism generally refers to a common
condition when the shape of the cornea is slightly irregular. We always compare it to the shape of a football versus a basketball (for the sports fans out there). If you have astigmatism, chances are you already wear glasses or contact lenses to correct the problem. When cataract surgery is performed, we can correct this problem with a TORIC IOL. A Toric IOL is able to bring distant objects into focus, therefore reducing the need for glasses or contacts when driving, for example. For those of you who rely on glasses for both distance and near, there is another great option available, the MULTIFOCAL IOL. Multifocal IOLs are used during cataract surgery to replace the eye’s natural crystalline lens and provide postoperative patients with a full range of vision, from reading to driving and everything in between. The need for glasses is virtually eliminated. For those patients who may also have astigmatism, the MULTIFOCAL IOL can be paired with a LenSx Laser that was discussed in the previous issue, for full astigmatism and presbyopia correction. This concludes our discussion of cataract surgery and IOLs. In the next issue, we will discuss various corneal diseases, including keratoconus, and novel stateof-the-art treatments available. tistry? Like the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two year old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach, this child may become an adult with a long term phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16 year old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between. Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit. Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity an estimation of benefits (EOB) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits. This might cost more in both time and money. Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. An Improving Market for 2013 What About 2014? By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor
T
he best news we have heard in quite some time
is that our economy is slowing improving. There has been a continued upswing of the Florida’s housing market. According to the National Association of Realtors, our limited inventory has continued to push up home prices. “Statewide closed sales of existing single-family homes totaled 20,933 in August, up 12.5% compared to the year-ago figure . . . Meanwhile, pending sales – contracts signed but not yet completed or closed – for existing single-family homes rose 17.2% over the previous August. The statewide median sales price for single-family existing homes last month was $175,000, up 18.6% from the previous year.” How do Davie and Cooper City stack up with regards to median-priced single-family homes? The median priced home was $363,000 – up 25% over the same month last year – beating the statewide statistics. Florida Realtors’ Chief Economist, Dr. John Tuccillo stated: “Single-family-home inventory is now at 5.1 months for August 2013… Combined with a relative decline in cash sales, this suggests that the pressure on inventories that has plagued the Florida market may be easing.” How does Davie and Cooper City stack up with regards to inventory? According to Facts & Trends – we are experiencing 3.4 months of inventory – lower than the statewide statistics. Even though that was a 63.8% increase over the previous months’ statistics (a very low 2.1 months), it was a 12.4% decrease over the same quarter last year. What does our future hold? According to Freddie Mac, the interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.46% in August 2013, up from the 3.60 percent average recorded during the same month a year earlier. One of my mortgage colleagues warned me that there will be a tightening for qualifying for a mortgage in 2014. This could create a slow-down in our marketplace as cash sales decrease. From August 1 through September 30, 2013, we experienced 164 sales: 47 Cash; 88 Conventional; 19 FHA; 2 Purchase Money Mortgages (Seller Financing); and 8 Other. As cash sales decline, interest rates rise, home prices rise and the new flood insurance laws take effect, we may see a considerable slowdown in our marketplace in 2014. outh Florida homeowners and consumers in foreclosure or
at risk of foreclosure are inundated with television commercials, mailers, and even phone calls from companies claiming they can save their home. These companies are usually unlicensed and inexperienced. They are looking for a quick profit at the expense of the consumer. Here are some of the foreclosure rescue scams against which all homeowners must beware: ▸▸ Out of state and local companies guarantee that they can cancel the foreclosure process, and save your home. They often present these promises in official looking documents, which appear government issued or from a bank. At the bottom of the mailer is a tiny disclaimer, which reveals the company is not tied to any bank or federal agency. Since these companies are either non-attorneys, or attorneys unlicensed to practice in the State of Florida, they CANNOT represent you in court. They also CANNOT charge you an upfront fee of any kind to assist you with a loan modification, as it is illegal under Florida law, punishable by civil and criminal penalties. ▸▸ Many realtors have also jumped unto the foreclosure rescue bandwagon, and are pushing short sales which are NOT in the best interests of many South Florida homeowners. I have personally witnessed realtors in court posing as homeowners or counsel before a judge in order to obtain foreclosure sale cancelations and extensions. We represent various clients whose realtors have even forged their signatures on official court documents and filed last minute bankruptcy petitions to stop foreclosure sales without the knowledge

or permission of the homeowner. This process is also illegal and is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for federal prosecution. ▸▸ One other emerging scam is the land trust transfer. The way this unethical scam works is that a company will partner with a less than reputable law firm to prepare a land trust for the property in question, and transfer your title to a land trust over which you have zero control. Then, they file a court action by the land trust to remove the mortgage lien from the property. This process is not a legitimate means of saving your home. You will only lose your money and the title to your home if you fall for this scam. If you have already fallen prey to one of these scams, demand your money back immediately and go to the appropriate authorities if they refuse to refund you money. Choosing the Right Specialist for ACL Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone

nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.

The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. Broward County residents will be gathering with family and friends to celebrate. Whether you are traveling out of town or hosting festivities at home, the Broward Sheriff’s Office wants you to be safe. Here is a security checklist to help protect your home and family.
Protecting Your Home

▸▸ Sign up for BSO’s free Home Watch program before you leave town (visit www.sheriff.org/homewatch to download the registration form or contact your local district office). Install good locks on all doors and windows. Leave your window blinds as you normally would if you were home. Use timers to operate lights at night and install a home security alarm system. Stop newspaper and mail deliveries, and never hide a spare key outside. Have someone mow your lawn if you’ll be away more than a few weeks. Turn down your home phone ringer so no one outside can hear repeated rings, and never leave a greeting on your answering machine or cell phone stating you are out of town. Do not post holiday travel plans on social networking sites. Invite a neighbor to park their car in your driveway or have a friend occasionally move yours if it is parked at your home.

▸▸ Arrive early at the airport to allow enough time for checking in, security screenings and reaching your gate. ▸▸ Always confirm your vehicle is in proper working order prior to departing on a long road trip. ▸▸ Get proper rest to avoid driver fatigue. Only stop at well-lit rest areas and lock your doors when you exit the vehicle. ▸▸ Do not exceed posted speed limits and buckle up – it’s the law!

▸▸ Encourage guests to use a designated driver if they will be drinking. ▸▸ When cooking, always use proper protective equipment, such as oven mitts, and never leave towels or food wrappers next to the stove. ▸▸ Never deep fry a turkey indoors; keep a safe distance from your home and other combustible materials. ▸▸ Do not use lighted candles near trees, draperies or flammable items. ▸▸ Turn off all cooking appliances and blow out all candles.
