May is ALS Awareness Month

n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-yearold son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was

progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. With your help, in the future children won’t have to watch their dad fade away. In memory of my brother, Michael.

At Inspire Weight Loss, we offer body contouring for two reasons. First, we include body contouring with all our weight loss programs to help slim out diet and exercise-resistant fat, start the skin tightening process, reduce cellulite, and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while the client is on their weight loss journey. Secondly, we have some clients who do not necessarily require a weight loss program but are dieting and exercising on their own and have certain stubborn areas of fat that they cannot lose. We can target those specific areas and slim those out as well. Our body contouring is non-invasive; We do not freeze or massage the areas, and there is no pain. It also serves as an anti-inflammatory.

Davie hosts Hippity Hoppity Spring & Splash-and-Dash Egg hunts

he town of Davie hosted its annual Hippity Hoppity Spring Egg Hunt, sponsored by HCA Florida University Hospital on Saturday, April 16, at the Pine Island Park at Bamford Sports Complex. The egg hunt let kids 10 and under a search for the perfect treat. Prizes were awarded for special eggs found throughout the hunt. A host of free family-friendly activities including a petting farm, train rides, inflatable rides and more were available for all to enjoy. There was even an opportunity to get a picture with Mr.

Peter Cottontail himself! A free concert by the South Florida Caribbean Chorale was held in support of relief efforts for Ukraine. Kids also had the opportunity to search for treats at The Splash-and-Dash Egg Hunt at the Pine Island Aquatics Center. Lifeguards tossed more than 500 eggs into the pool for children to collect. Every participating child went home with a free gift bag! Fun was had by all. Kids were left wondering why there can't be egg hunts every week!

tudents and faculty at Western High School in Davie have yet again come through for the community. The school hosted its annual Spring Harvest Drive to collect much-needed food for local families on April 6, 2022. While Harvest Drive takes place across Broward County, its heart is at Western High School. Student volunteers were busy collecting and sorting donations which will soon provide hundreds of families with a week’s worth of groceries and other personal hygiene items. Student volunteers were joined by faculty and staff as they sorted donated items and filled paper bags for delivery to local families. Harvest Drive was founded by Renee Herman 30 years ago and has grown into a county-wide effort. It provides necessities to thousands of Broward

County families each year. In addition to providing food for those in need, Harvest Drive also runs two boutiques. Throughout the year, volunteers have been busy collecting, sorting, sizing, and tagging donations of new and gently used clothing, shoes, toys, books, linens, household items, and much more. Recipient families work with personal shoppers to fill their bags with their most needed items. For many of these families, the toys they select will be their children’s only holiday presents. High School Voter Drive By Zach McDaniels

roward County Supervisor of Elections, Joe Scott, led a month-long voter registration drive at county high schools during April. Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register. Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. However, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections. “No part of my job is more rewarding than helping young citizens vote for the first time,” said Scott in a video released on the Browardvotes.com, “Here in the state of Florida your sixteenth birthday is an

important milestone. I am not saying that because you can get your drivers’ license, I am saying that because you can register to vote.” Students who registered will not be able to vote till they reach 18 years old, but will automatically be added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Many of the students received a keepsake water bottle emblazoned with the @browardvotes logo. “I was really excited. I can’t wait till I turn 18 to vote in my first election. Hashtag adulting!” said Stoneman Douglas junior Jo. “When you become an active voter, you will have an impact on who our government leaders are at every level, including city, county, state, and national governments,” commented Scott, “I’ll see you at the polls.”

Five Things Every Homeowner Should Do BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON

urricane Season starts next month. This year’s season is expected to be “above average.”, Most South Floridians have experienced the rush to “get things done” when a major storm is on the way. There are a few things, however, that homeowners can do ahead of time to make that storm watch period a little bit less stressful.

1. Prune trees and clear yard debris

Hurricane-force winds can convert almost anything into a missile, capable of inflicting damage to homes, cars, and people. High winds can pick things like coconuts or dead branches and launch them at windows or people. It is a good idea to prune back dead branches and tree limbs that overhang homes. Dead and diseased plants should also be removed.

2. Repair windows, doors & roofing

In severe weather, your roof is your first line of defense, and a roof in need of repair is exposed to heavy winds. Examine the flashing for leaks and look for loose roof tiles that may be prone to wind and rain. Make sure it's ready to withstand severe winds and make any necessary repairs. The same goes for windows and doors.

This year, I fought to bring home more than 24 million in taxpayers’ dollars to be reinvested back into Broward County. These funds will go towards hardening our infrastructure against storms and climate change and expanding healthcare initiatives for vulnerable populations. For the fourth year, my office will bring home nearly $600,000 to the David Posnack Jewish Community Center in Davie for seniors to receive kosher meals. We also secured over $355,000 for the Country Estates community in Southwest Ranches to maintain its clean water and to clear roads of flooding so that emergency vehicles can safely pass through. These dollars have been included in the 2022 Florida Budget and presented to the Governor for approval. Despite legislative leadership’s continued focus on passing controversial “culture war” bills that garnered national attention this year, my focus remains squarely on addressing critical issues facing Floridians. I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks.

lmost daily, we have a child come into our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their 6 month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients that are a must. First of all, cavity-causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on the intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!

ISTORY OF THE RUNNING SHOE

(PART 1) As the most primitive and user-friendly of sports, running requires little equipment. Unlike the golfer who utilizes a host of clubs in his armamentarium, the runner has but one piece of equipment in his weaponry, the running shoe. Invariably athletes I see will arrive with numerous questions regarding the running shoes. This article discusses the runner’s “weapon”, its history, and provides some insight when purchasing your next pair of running shoes. It is believed that running footwear actually came into being around 393 A.D. after the Romans outlawed the Olympics. The Roman armies possessed a team of runners who were used to send messages and an edict was issued by the emperor to supply this team with Gallicas: A single solid soled shoe designed to protect the foot during long distances. The Gallica most likely represented the most primitive form of the running shoe. Certainly, much has happened since then. In 1839 Charles Goodyear mixed sulfur with boiling crude rubber and created rubber as we now know it. Applying this substance to her shoe became one of the greatest advances to running shoe technology. By 1865 Spalding and Sears catalogs featured running shoes costing $3-$6 and amounting to one

quarter to a half of an average person's weekly salary. In 1948 Addi Dassier further developed running shoe technology when he created the Adidas shoe company in Germany, while his brother Rudi formed the rival Puma company. The heated competition subsequently fueled shoe innovation. In Japan, Tiger developed the first distance marathon shoe in 1951 which featured a 2-compartment forefoot one for the big toe and the other for the remaining 4 toes. This design was modeled after the traditional Japanese Geta. New balance hit the running shoe market in the 1960s with the first American-made running shoe, after the owners who manufactured orthopedic shoes since 1906 in Boston decided to apply their experience to running shoes. A decade later the US Tiger shoe distributors erected their own company based on an innovation developed by Bill Bowerman, the Oregon State track coach best known as Steve Prefontaine's guru. Bowerman developed the waffle outsole by pouring liquid rubber onto a waffle iron and glued it to the midsole of a track shoe to aid in traction and shock absorption. His innovation is now universally known as the waffle outsole and the company was named Nike after the Greek goddess of victory. Running as a sport has grown exponentially and so did the competition for the running shoe market. Companies began investing large sums of money into biomechanical research and shoe testing. Emphasis is

placed on sound knowledge of the running gait and its effect on the running shoe. Today advanced technology provides the science in the quest to develop the perfect or ideal shoe. The industry has evolved exponentially owing to the very lucrative market. Billions are spent each year by consumers to purchase shoes touting the best shock absorption and designs allowing maximal stability. Experienced runners are well aware that an appropriate running shoe is essential to train at ones greatest potential. Wear the wrong shoe and risk being banished to the ranks of the injured.

Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Supports Ukrainian Cause

here is a small, somewhat nondescript, church built on four acres of land on 100th Ave in Cooper City. You may have driven by and not noticed it. Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church was consecrated and opened its doors in February 1992. The church has served the small but growing South Florida Ukrainian Orthodox community since then. And, it now serves as a lifeline to Ukraine. Since the day Russian tanks began rolling across the border, the congregation at Saint Nicholas’ took action. Church members have raised funds and supplies to help Ukrainians survive the Russian attack. The most vital items have been medical supplies, food, and clothing. In addition to supplies and shelf-stable food, the church raised money to purchase a four-wheel-drive ambulance that is being used to evacuate children and injured and sick people. The incredible generosity of the community has been overwhelming.

Due to all of the support being received and the abundance of certain donations, church staff and volunteers are requesting specific items and potential help with shipping items to Europe. Some of the top items being requested are the following:

No Estate Plan? You are Not Alone.

ou may be surprised to learn that 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of your property, the care and custody of your minor children, and the identification of who directs the administration of your estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the State of Florida. So, in simpler terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the State will make all your decisions for you. Another surprising estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan, revise or update their documents every 19 years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 2003 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not. Estate planning is often narrowly viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement, and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone. If you have minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse, and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, daycare, and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. If you have adult children, are you confident that your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Finally, do you own a small business? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees, and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you do have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs.
