Imagination Is More Important Than Ever

n a 1929 interview with The Saturday Evening Post, Albert Einstein famously quipped, “I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” It is worth noting that someone universally regarded for his scientific knowledge and intelligence had a higher regard for his own imagination than knowledge. Parents in modern America should heed these words today, more than ever. State school rankings, the proliferation of standardized tests, competition to attend selective universities, and peer pressure have combined to create a cauldron of stress for students today. Academic achievement and high scores on SATs, AP tests, and state assessments are often priorities for parents. While high achievement is important, developing and encouraging a child’s creativity and imagination are likely even more vital to their future success. Couture & Kindness Go a Long Way By Beverly Perkins

ooper City High School student, Zoe McClure was recently named the recipient of The Soroptimist International of Davie Youth Leadership Award. The monetary award recognizes outstanding contributions made by young adult high school girls between the ages of 14-18 in Broward County to their communities. These girls demonstrate initiative through volunteer and leadership actions by their ability to identify a problem and find a solution. Soroptimist International of Davie is a global organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. The name stems from the Latin meaning “best for women” and that is what Zoe has proven with her non-profit 501-c3 organization. She is the perfect example of “Women at their best, working to help other women to be their best”. Kindness Couture’s project “Operation: Underwear” was successful not just once but twice. The first time one thousand pairs of clean underwear were collected for children at Broward Outreach. The second time they worked with Childnet and Family Forever TV and they were able to collect 2,000 pairs for foster children living in Broward County. Underwear is often forgotten about and the most needed article of clothing for these children. “Giving them the most basic of needs can also give them the confidence to get through the day and Kindness Couture has not only done what we set out to do, which is to help clothe children in need but it's given me a bigger and better view of our community,” explained Zoe. Another important project, “Project Pajamas” allowed Kindness Couture ambassadors to collect

enough socks, underwear, and pajamas to fill 152 bags that were then donated to Childnet for children entering foster care. “Zoe McClure is certainly making her community and the world a better place through her commitment and dedication to those in need,” stated Mary Anna Giordano, Youth Leadership Award Chair of Soroptimist International of Davie.

Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital Ranked Highest in South Florida, Continues Expansion Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Hospital was ranked highest among hospitals in South Florida in Newsweek magazine’s World’s Best Hospitals 2022 analysis. The ranking comes as the medical campus continues to expand in size, staff and services, offering patients increased access to the best in patient care in the region. The ranking also places the Weston Hospital as the 45th best hospital in the nation among a group of more than 400. The analysis results were published on March 2nd. “The Newsweek ranking is a testament to the dedication, and commitment of all our caregivers, who have persevered, in spite of two difficult years during a global pandemic,” said Conor Delaney MD, PhD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic’s Florida region. “Despite the challenges we have faced, our caregivers have continued to provide our patients with the very best care.” In addition to the Newsweek accolade, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Weston Hospital’s Gastroenterology and GI Surgery Program among the best in the nation and highest in Florida in its annual ranking of Best Hospitals for 2021-2022. Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA, President of Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hospital added, “It is always an honor to be recognized by our peers for the work that we do. I am proud of our caregivers and the incredible outcomes they achieve for our patients every day.” Despite the pandemic, hospital officials have pressed forward with an ambitious plan to expand and efforts are underway to add additional beds, specialty services and more physicians. “We are currently focusing on campus expansion and adding new services to accommodate the growing number of patients we serve,” says Dr. Blandon. “All of these initiatives will allow us to continue providing patients with highly specialized, personalized care.” Currently, an additional 30 beds are being added to the fifth

floor of the new hospital tower, including 16 intensive care unit beds and 14 intermediate beds. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. Last year, the Weston Hospital expanded its transplant program to include living donor liver transplants, making it the only hospital in the region and the only hospital in Florida currently providing such services. Also in 2021, the 6,800-square-foot Lozick Women’s Center was added. This center provides a seamless experience for patients undergoing screening, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. The opening of the new center and the addition of new services follow several years of robust expansion, led by the need to serve the growing number of patients from South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean coming to the Weston campus for care. In 2018, a new $232 million, five-story hospital tower was completed and the emergency services department expanded to increase capacity by 50 percent. In early 2020, the hospital unveiled its newly renovated registration area with additional touchpoints and kiosks for faster check-in for appointments. The expansion of Cleveland Clinic Weston extends the reach of Cleveland Clinic’s unique model of medicine, which combines patient-centered care with research and innovation to achieve clinical excellence every day.

ooper City celebrated its 63rd annual Founder’s Day with a day full of fun on Saturday, March 12. The weather cooperated for this year’s event which started off bright and early with a one-mile fun run/walk followed by a pancake breakfast served by Boy Scout Troop 118. As the temperature heated up, residents hit the street again for the Founder’s Day Parade. Lots of little ones scurried about the sides of the parade routes collecting candy from participants. Following the parade, festivities began at Brian Piccolo County Park. There were food booths, performances, arts and crafts, and tons of children’s activities. The fun culminated in a fantastic concert featuring the Shadow Creek Band and a fireworks show that brought smiles to everyone’s faces. We can not wait to do it again next year!

Eligible families who are planning on buying their first home or improving their existing home must apply by April 29, 2022 to be eligible to receive funds. The Town of Davie FTHB Program will award a maximum of $50,000 towards the closing costs, first mortgage reduction, and/or down payment assistance for the purchase of eligible owner-occupied housing in Davie. The awards are made on a first-come, first-serve basis to qualifying families who apply. To be eligible a family’s household income must qualify as low or very low, the family can not have owned a home in the past three years and they must put down a down payment of at least 1% of the purchase price. Homebuyers must also complete an 8-hour HUD-approved homeownership counseling course.

Home Repair Program

The town’s Home Repair Program provides home repair assistance for Davie households in owner-occupied housing units with a maximum award amount of $60,000. Residents can pay for repairs to numerous components of a residence such as windows, roofing, plumbing, heating & cooling, and electrical. Homeowners must be aware that home repairs are not the same as remodeling and that repairs made to correct code violations and eliminate health and safety issues will be prioritized. Assistance is provided in the form of a 10-year, 0% interest deferred second loan that reverts to a grant as long as all program conditions are met. Davie residents who think they may be eligible for either program should contact The Community Services Division as soon as possible to begin an application. The assistance will only last as long as funds are available.

WHY IS MY CHILD TOE WALKING?

oe walking is one of the most common pediatric complaints seen in our office. Parents are concerned when their child habitually walks in a tip toe fashion on the balls of their feet without the heel contacting the ground. Although this gait pattern is normal in children who are learning to walk, most will outgrow toe walking at age two, after which the child begins to assume a normal heel-to-toe pattern. In rare cases, continuing to ambulate this way after the age of two may indicate some type of neuromuscular or developmental disorder. These may include Autism spectrum disorders, Cerebral palsy, or a spinal cord abnormality. Some experts feel that children with autism spectrum disorders may toe walk because of heightened sensory issues in their feet. The vast majority of toe walkers are referred to as being “idiopathic” toe walkers, which simply means that the cause is unknown. These children will tend to have a normal physical and neurological exam. Older children may continue to toe walk

By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS because the muscles and tendons behind the ankle were short at birth or have adapted and tightened over time. The main culprit involves the calf muscle which originates at the back of the knee and transitions towards the heel to become the Achilles tendon. Most toe walkers will be able to walk with their feet flat on the ground if asked to up to the age of five, after which it becomes increasingly more difficult to walk flat footed as the foot begins to adapt. These children may complain of difficulty wearing shoes, pain and fatigue in the ball of the foot, and cramping or tenderness in the calf while doing sports. Proper assessment requires a thorough history and physical exam. This includes a neuromuscular evaluation of the joints, muscles, and gait. Treatment is predicated on the age of the patient and whether the ankle is flexible enough to allow the heel to reach the ground during standing and walking. For children two to five years of age, the initial treatment is always nonsurgical. This may include monitoring the child at intervals, employing physical therapy, stretching, night splints, and shoe modifications. In more severe cases short leg walking casts and bracing are used. More recently, Botox therapy has also proven to be beneficial, but its effects are short-lived and

often require repeated injections. In children over the age of five who cannot walk flatfooted due to a rigid ankle contracture, one of several different surgical releases is chosen to lengthen the tendon and improve the range of motion and function of the ankle and foot. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and requires approximately four weeks in a cast after which physical therapy is instituted. Most patients will improve over time after treatment. However, studies show that some children will progressively return to toe walking, even after aggressive nonsurgical treatment or surgery.

Common Probate Myths By Bruce Iden, Esquire

here are commonly held misconceptions about avoiding probate which may lead to uninformed decisions resulting in the need to open a probate administration. While the best way to avoid probate is to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s debunk a few probate myths.

I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common of all estate planning

myths! Inherited property cannot be retitled or sold without approval of the court, which requires opening a probate administration for the deceased. There are, however, ways to avoid this including the creation of a new deed where your property eventually passes to your heirs or retitling your home to your trust. (An estate planning attorney can help determine the best option.)

Adding my adult child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without

probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection if it is not their primary residence. Your child’s creditors can place a lien against your property. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there does not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. And as your child is listed as an owner, they must sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property.

Can I obtain the necessary forms and submit them to the probate court myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida, almost all probate cases require an attor-

ney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets is only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent.

My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience in south Florida. Probate for most simple estates can be settled within

a year, however, because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle.

I created a revocable living trust to avoid probate. A revocable living trust can help you avoid probate, but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property, cash and investment accounts, and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries.
