Our Celebrations
It’s that time of year again! Broomfield Days is right around the corner on September 19. I have a lifetime of Broomfield Days memories! Broomfield Days started as the Broomfield Boom in 1957, and while I was not born yet, my grandfather was part of Broomfield’s initial business community and helped plan that first event. My own earliest memory of Broomfield Days goes back to 1976 - the bicentennial. I was six years old. I remember standing with my family in front of the fire station on Midway Blvd. as the parade went by, catching candy, listening to the bands, and watching the flags wave. The air was electric! And even though I didn’t really understand community yet, I know I felt proud of my hometown. Broomfield was 15 years old. Since then, Broomfield Days is an annual calendar highlight that I would not dream of missing (and rarely have). Marching with Kohl Elementary as a kid and then as a Broomfield High School cheerleader, attending the trade fair, eating the treats, watching performances, playing games, and dozens of other activities as a teen, and then bringing my own kids to Broomfield Days to do it all again. In recent years, my Broomfield Days participation has centered around representing this magazine, meeting dozens of readers, and giving away swag. This year, we decided to do something different with our Broomfield Days coverage and asked some familiar Broomfield faces why they love Broomfield Days and to share their favorite memories. You can read the collection starting on page 29. As part of gathering memories, I sat down with two of the folks featured. First, I would never pass up a chance to have breakfast with Mr. Paul Derda, who served as master of ceremonies of the parade for 40 years, and take a walk down Broomfield Days memory lane. I am not sure which of us enjoyed our chat more! In addition, I connected with City Manager Jennifer Hoffman. Jennifer also has decades of fond Broomfield Days experiences, but as we talked, she reminded me of one very important fact: Seventy percent of Broomfield residents have lived here 10 years or less. As much as I enjoy seeing old friends, neighbors, family, and colleagues at the celebration, I also love meeting new people who are experiencing Broomfield Days for the first time and going home with a bucket of happy feelings about their new community. I especially like when people tell me that they learned about Broomfield Days by reading this magazine! After all, that is our purpose sharing local information and creating connections. So as is traditional for me, I would like to extend an invitation. If you are new to town or have never experienced Broomfield Days, mark your calendar and make it a date. The fun begins early in the morning on Sept. 19 at Midway Park and lasts all day! You can read the full schedule starting on page 28. The 65th Anniversary of Broomfield is a great time to spend a day immersed in community and experiencing the magic of our amazing hometown. You will be glad you joined the fun. Broomfield Days is Broomfield’s biggest event of the year where friends and neighbors come together to celebrate what makes living in this community so special. For decades, on a warm weekend in September, Broomfielders have come together to have fun and spend a day enjoying a festival in their honor. The day begins with a community pancake breakfast, followed by runners lining up for the Mayor’s Cup 5K and Fun Run before the Broomfield Days Parade comes down Midway Boulevard. Later, in Midway Park, residents can explore more than 300 vendor booths and food trucks; a car show featuring unique and classic cars; participate in a children’s clown contest, DockDog competition, or duck race; jump on inflatables; pet farm animals; and enjoy live musical, dance, and theater performances on three stages. Beginning Autumn
with a Progressive Dinner eptember is already here! School is underway, evening light is fading, and there is a familiar chill in the air. We are about to begin a steep downhill slide into holiday activities. Before that happens, I want to soak up a few more warm and slow summer-like moments with family and friends. I read a quote the other day that pulled at my heart. It said something like “I’m not looking for another perfect family picture. I just want one more summer with everyone under the same roof.” YES. I am here to distract you from the inevitable passing of time and seasons. I am here to wrap you in connection and friendship and memories. And why not do it through the universal language of food? Have you ever participated in a progressive dinner? It is one of those timeless traditions that has a unique way of bringing people together. Instead of gathering at one home for an entire meal, everyone moves from house to house enjoying a different course at each stop. The last one we participated in went something like this. We started at a house for appetizers, went to the next home for drinks and backyard games, wandered to the following home for main course, and ended at our house for dessert around the fire pit under the stars. The beauty of a progressive dinner is that no one has to do it all, making for a more enjoyable and easy gathering. The best experiences are simple and done ahead of time. Think bruschetta or charcuterie for the appetizer, something warm like soup or tacos from a crock pot

for the main, a stop for pie or brownies at the third home, and final destination can be a nightcap or hot chocolate around the table with some fruit. If possible, have the homes close enough to walk between. Those short strolls often become the most memorable parts of the evening. If kids are involved, it is so heartwarming to watch them run ahead, laughing and anticipating what is waiting for them at the next home. Usually, 45 minutes at each home is ideal, and people linger at the last home. You can make the evening more memorable by picking a theme like Italian feast, favorite family recipes, or a harvest using whatever ingredients you can find from the farmers markets. An unexpected benefit of a progressive dinner is that people naturally mix and mingle. Unlike a traditional dinner where guests remain seated in one spot,
moving from home to home creates fresh conversation and deeper friendships. This is a time when so many of us communicate through text and social media, and the thought of gathering around the table together might feel really uncomfortable. Sharing food reminds us that real community is built face to face and through opening our homes to each other. Before the rush of fall and winter holidays sweeps us up, pick a few neighbors and try organizing a progressive dinner of your own. n the first Saturday in June at the Broomfield Library, there were 40 kids and teens huddled over a piece of paper, drawing utensils in hand, shaping stories in four square comic book panels. At the front of the room was local award-winning comic Stan Yan, who was leading a workshop on Introduction to Comic Book Writing. Yan encouraged the young artists and storytellers to be creative and push boundaries in their drawings and stories. There were no phones, tablets, computers, or erasers. It was just imagination at work. This pursuit of imagination is what inspired the Broomfield Library to organize and host its inaugural free Mini-Con, Broom Con (a mini fan and comics convention), from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 10. The purpose and goal of this event is to bring the community together around the shared interest of fandom, art, and comics. This event is being headlined by award-winning animator and author of Ham Helsing, Rich Moyer, and nationally renowned illustrator and founder of Tinto Press, Ted Intorcio. Their keynote conversation will highlight their artistic journeys, current projects, and an exploration of what it takes to tell the best possible story on the page. The keynote will be followed by a cosplay panel by local cosplayers Stitched in Starlight and Wezrez Cosplay. After the panel, the two professional cosplayers will serve as judges for Broom Con’s

cosplay contests for kids (5-10), teens (11-18), and adults (19+). All attendees are encouraged to come in full costume for the event and the contest. Lastly, local artists and vendors will have merchandise on display and for sale in the auditorium and library lobby for the duration of the event. One of the local vendors, Total Escape Games, will be hosting a “Beat the Employee” MAGIC: The Gathering Contest. Anybody who defeats the employee in a game of MAGIC will receive a prize. The library has seen incredible growth in the interest of graphic novels over the last decade. Currently, the library has approximately 6,000 adult, young adult, and children’s graphic novel titles in circulation. Approximately 90 percent
of these titles have been checked out at least once in the last year, and 60 percent of them have been checked out three or more times. The collection also continues to grow by hundreds each year. Broom Con is a celebration of this collection and the characters, worlds, and stories the Broomfield community has grown to love. The challenges in graphic novels are often galactic, and the library intends to bring the galaxy to Broomfield with our inaugural Broom Con. Palisade Peaches: A Colorado Tradition Rooted in Memory

alisade peaches are more than a seasonal treat in Colorado—they’re a symbol of late‑summer abundance, a marker of place, and for many families, a tradition that stretches across generations. Grown in the sun‑drenched Grand Valley where hot days, cool nights, and rich river‑fed soil create ideal conditions, these peaches have earned their reputation for unmatched sweetness and juiciness. Each year, as summer begins to fade and days become shorter, roadside stands fill with crates of golden fruit, farmers markets buzz with anticipation, and kitchens across the state prepare for pies, cobblers, and canning. For longtime Coloradans, Palisade peaches are part of the rhythm of summer. For me, that rhythm began in childhood. As a family of six, most of our summer vacations were affordable road trips within Colorado. My parents would load all of us into the station wagon for mountain picnics and on numerous occasions, the road led us to Grand Junction to pick peaches. One trip stands out in my mind: a sweet older woman welcomed us into her orchard, letting us wander through rows of trees with a view of her quaint farmhouse in the distance. We filled fabric‑lined bushels with perfectly ripe fruit, ate a picnic lunch under the branches, and—if my memory serves— ended the day with a motel stay. The bounty rode back with us to the Front Range

where, in the days that followed, my mother and Grandma Lucy turned the kitchen into a canning workshop. Jars clicked and sealed on the counter as they worked to preserve the harvest, extending the sweetness of that trip long after summer had faded. Those moments— sticky hands, warm peaches, my mom and grandma working together—shaped my understanding of what it means to savor Colorado’s agricultural heritage. What makes Palisade peaches exceptional is the unique environment of the Grand Valley. The combination of intense sunlight, cool nighttime temperatures, and irrigation from the Colorado River creates fruit with concentrated flavor and vibrant color. Peach growers in the region have honored their craft throughout generations, tending orchards that have become a defining feature of the landscape. The harvest season is short, stretching from late July into early September, which only adds to the excitement. When the peaches arrive, they typically arrive in abundance— boxes stacked high at farm stands, festival booths overflowing, and families making trips west to bring home the year’s best. Beyond their flavor, Palisade peaches carry seasonal traditions. They anchor community events like annual Peach Festivals, provide a good for non-profit selling, inspire home bakers and chefs alike, and spark traditions that echo across the state. Whether enjoyed fresh, baked into a pie, or sealed into jars for winter, they bring people together. My family’s peach‑picking trips were just one version of a story shared by countless others: a journey, a harvest, and the joy of preserving something fleeting. For many of us, a Palisade peach is more than fruit. It’s a memory, a connection to place, and a reminder that fall will be arriving soon. Broomfield Symphony Orchestra Promises Exciting Upcoming Season

local symphony orchestra is one of those rare community assets, blending culture, connection, and pure entertainment in a way few organizations can match. And for our local Broomfield Symphony Orchestra, that sentiment is most definitely apropos. The BSO is not your grandfather’s orchestra. The 2026-27 season is set to prove it. “The unfortunate image some people may have is that orchestras are stale – we like to keep BSO relevant and fresh,” explains BSO’s Musical Director David Brussel. Those of us who have called Broomfield home for decades may remember BSO’s beginnings in 1981, when it was founded by local musicians as the Broomfield Civic Orchestra. It adopted the name Broomfield Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in 2011, reflecting its growth in membership and repertoire. The BSO season lineup includes: • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 Season Opener featuring renowned violin soloist Gregory Walker • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 and 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 “Holidays with the BSO” • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2027 “Music from England” • 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2027 featuring piano soloist Brenna Berman • 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2027 “Future Stars” with the 2027 Young Artist Competition Winners All events are at the Broomfield Auditorium, 3 Community Park Rd. In a world that often feels fast and fragmented, enjoying a Broomfield Symphony Orchestra musical experience creates a moment of collective focus: We’re all listening to the same swell of strings, the same triumphant brass, the same jazzy woodwinds. At its core, the value of BSO comes from its ability to gather people around a shared artistic experience. Mary Murray agrees. The retired theatre arts teacher and drama department director with Adams 12 Five Star Schools, adds, “Local performing arts, such as a symphony orchestra, offer community enrichment and social connection for the performers and community members, alike.” Shared musical experience, for example, strengthens the cultural identity of Broomfield and beyond and gives concert-goers a sense of pride in the artistic talent flourishing right here in Broomfield, says Mr. Brussel. “The BSO programming respects many musical styles and audience appeal.” Broomfield Symphony Orchestra’s entertainment is unmatched in the community. A symphony concert isn’t just “classical music.” BSO offers jazz collaborations, holiday spectaculars, and themed pops concerts that appeal to audiences of all ages. Hearing

familiar melodies—whether it’s John Williams, Duke Ellington, or Tchaikovsky—played live by a full ensemble is electrifying. Spectators feel the music physically, not just emotionally. “What we’re doing this season is heavy on the musical scores from movies,” explains maestro Brussels. “We’ll be performing little-known gems by well-known composers, including great works by un-known composers - our challenge is to make our performances appeal to a broad audience.” Broomfield resident, Christina Lynn-Craig, performs with the acclaimed ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir and has partnered with BSO. She says, “It was a pleasure to collaborate with the Broomfield Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of David Brussel. He is an excellent musician and the choir learned a lot.” It’s evident when speaking with community members, the excitement felt in anticipation for the upcoming Broomfield Symphony Orchestra season. “I’ve lived in Broomfield 34 years, and it has been wonderful to witness the growth of the many arts organizations which make our community such a vibrant place,” explains Ms. Lynn-Craig. Over four decades, the Broomfield Symphony Orchestra has become a part of the rhythm of our community. The How & Why It Happened:
Broomfield Becoming
Its Own County

I
magine living in a city where a trip across town could take you through four different counties, each with its own courts, tax systems, election offices, and government rules. That was the reality for Broomfield prior to November 15, 2001. Frustrated by the inefficiencies and confusion of being split among Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, and Weld Counties, community leaders began asking a bold question: Could Broomfield become its own county? To find out, the city launched a series of feasibility studies starting in 1995. What began as an ambitious idea evolved into one of the most unique local government transformations in Colorado history, ultimately leading voters in 1998 to approve the creation of the City and County of Broomfield—the state's first new county in nearly a century. In the mid-1990s community visionaries and leaders considered the idea of Broomfield becoming its own county. Residents such as Larry and Tryna Cooper, Al Jeffries, Gary Grenier, Clark Griep, Hank Stovall, and Linda Fahrenbruch, among dozens of others. That same year, the City of Broomfield commissioned a preliminary feasibility review to examine whether a consolidated city-county government was practical and financially viable. The feasibility study focused on advantages and disadvantages. Advantages included things like keeping property taxes lower and improved delivery of courts and human services. Disadvantages considered were the costs of a county transition: building new infrastructure for a jail, county and district courts, and transferring operations and records. Not to mention the time and expense of a statewide campaign for creating Colorado’s 64th county. An amendment to the Colorado State Constitution was required to create a new county, meaning a statewide vote was required. That core group of residents and others campaigned vigorously, traveling throughout the state asking Coloradans to support a constitutional amendment and on November 3, 1998 it was approved. “Prior to becoming a county, you had to get your license plates renewed in Lafayette or Brighton, and now all county services, with the notable exception of the coroner, are provided in Broomfield,” explains former Broomfield Mayor Pat Quinn. Because Broomfield overlapped into four counties, it meant not only needing to travel out of the city for county services, but also meant four different sales tax bases. During the three-year transition to become its own county in 2001, city officials oversaw an expansion of city hall, construction of new facilities including county and district courts and a jail, and

the creation of important human services. In fact, some services are specific county (not municipal) functions such as treasurer, clerk and recorder, assessor, and a variety of human service programs. Broomfield is Colorado’s smallest and newest county and one of only two consolidated city-counties in the state, along with the City and County of Denver. “Broomfield is a city that runs a county, which means doing business with Broomfield or in Broomfield is streamlined everywhere,” Quinn says. And because Broomfield continues to be a successful city that runs a county, there is no need to add the cost of county commissioners. With ten councilmembers representing some Broomfield 2026! Fast forward to Thursday night, Nov. 15, 2001 when Broomfield officially became its own county — to that festive gala in the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library lobby and auditorium. This writer had just been elected to city council. Hundreds of people, from state legislators to grassroots activists, gathered to celebrate Broomfield becoming its own city and county – including remarks from Governor Bill Owens via video. Mr. Cooper brought a bottle of Dom Pérignon vintage champagne to mark the occasion. As Broomfield recognizes its 25 successful years of being a city and county, perhaps longtime resident Seth Patterson says it best, “Let’s celebrate 25 years of that success and show our appreciation to city leadership who led and completed this effort, as well as later city leadership who have accepted that challenge and sustained a model combined city-county governance structure.” Bette Erickson is a former city councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem. Clown Contest Calling all little clowns of Broomfield! It’s time to clown around at the Kid’s Clown Contest! Dress up in your best clown outfit and head to the Demo stage for a morning of fun and laughter. Registration is free and starts at 10:00 a.m. next to the Demo stage, but make sure a parent or guardian is present to sign you up. Kids will be grouped into three age divisions: 1-4 years, 5-6 years, and 7-10 years. The top two clowns in each group will win a brand-new bike! The contest will take place at 10:30 a.m. Get ready to show off your clowning skills and make your silliness count! Mayor’s Cup Race Following the tasty community pancake breakfast comes the annual 2026 Broomfield Mayor’s Cup Race where runners of all ages and fitness levels line up to race the family 5K. Designed to bring the community together to promote health and fitness, the race kicks off at 8:20 a.m. on Midway Boulevard near the firehouse. Participants will follow a scenic route through Broomfield’s streets and bike paths and find themselves winding through the beautiful community park as their path leads them back over to Midway to get ready for the parade. In addition to the 5K race, there’s also the Broomfield Days Fun Run, a one-mile race down Midway Boulevard for those looking for a shorter, less competitive option. For those interested in joining the race or the FUN run, race registration is available online at B-REx.com through September 17, 2026. Day of race registration begins at 7:15 a.m. at Midway Park (just east of the Fire Station). Cost: 5K Race - $20 Day of ($18 if preregistered online), 1 Mile Fun Run - $15 Day of ($13 if preregistered online). Well-behaved dogs and strollers are welcome! Parade The Broomfield Days Parade is one of the highlights each and every year of Broomfield Days. Friends, neighbors, and families all line up on both sides of Midway to see their kids’ school, high school marching bands, and floats from local organizations and community groups. The Parade is set to start at 9:30 a.m. and will make it to Midway Park by 10:00 a.m. Lifelong Broomfield resident, educator, and community supporter John Long is the Master of Ceremonies for Broomfield’s highly anticipated annual parade. Food, Fun, and Entertainment The performance stages at Broomfield Days will feature a wide variety of talented performers from across Broomfield, showcasing all ages and styles of music and dance. Bow Wow Broomfield and Dock Dogs Bow Wow Broomfield is another popular event at Broomfield Days, dedicated to celebrating the community’s furry friends. It features a variety of dog-friendly activities, contests, and vendors catering to pets and their owners. We all love our dogs and we love that they have their own area at Broomfield Days. Let your pet showcase their jumping skills at the DockDogs Contest! Dogs can compete in the Big Air competition, where they leap from a dock into a pool to see how far they can jump. They can also test their abilities in the Extreme Vertical Competition to see who jumps the highest or race against the clock in the Speed Retrieve event. All dogs are welcome to participate!
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, with the competition kicking off at 9:00 a.m. each day. We asked our only child, three-year-old Emmy, if she’d like to dress up in a costume as a clown for the local event. Apparently, she agreed. I dug out a costume that had been made for me as a child. It was much too big for a 3-yearold, so I stuffed it with newspapers and put snow boots on her feet. We then painted her face with make-up and we were set! As I remember, once the costume was stuffed with newspaper, she wasn’t as
thrilled with the idea. Emmy could hardly walk! She won third prize according to the back of the photo. Expo Turns Good Intentions Into Everyday Habits

ost people already know that exercise, sleep, nutrition, and stress management matter. The harder part is turning that knowledge into choices and habits that can be sustained over time. Broomfield’s annual Living in Balance Aging Well Expo will take on that challenge when it returns Friday, Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Broomfield Community Center. This year’s free event will focus on helping older adults move beyond simply knowing what is good for them and develop practical tools for supporting their physical and mental well-being. The program will include a keynote presentation, four breakout sessions, a drop-in crafting activity, a hearing clinic (call Family Hearing at 303-465-4327 to reserve your spot), and a vendor fair connecting attendees with services and resources. “We want people to leave Living in Balance feeling empowered. Aging well isn’t about making a hundred changes at once,” said Senior Services Manager Nikki Crouse. “It’s about understanding what matters most to you, finding what works for your life and taking small steps that can make a meaningful difference over time.” Keynote speaker Michelle Zellner will open the program with “The YOU Revolution: From Imbalance to Balancing Aging with Vitality Through YOUr Evolution.” Her presentation begins with a simple question: Why does someone want to make a change? Identifying personal motivation can make it easier to determine how to move forward. Zellner will discuss foundational habits and supportive tools that can help people navigate setbacks, make consistent choices, and move from merely getting through life to thriving. Zellner founded Better Beings and has nearly 30 years of experience educating and coaching people on exercise, nutrition, weight management,

sleep, chronic stress, mindfulness, and work-life balance. As an author, speaker, corporate wellness trainer, and coach, she also draws on her own wellness journey to help others take greater control of their health. Although the expo is designed with older adults in mind, its information also may be useful to caregivers, Keynote speaker Michelle Zellner family members, and people planning for the years ahead. “Aging well looks different for everyone. It might mean staying active, nurturing relationships, trying something new, or simply finding more purpose and enjoyment in everyday life,” said Crouse. “We hope Living in Balance inspires people to discover what makes life meaningful to them and gives them practical ways to keep moving toward the life they want.” Doors will open at 8 a.m. for a complimentary continental breakfast, followed by the keynote at 8:30 a.m. Advance registration is required for the breakfast, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. The vendor fair will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Four breakout sessions are scheduled from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m., with topics and presenters to be announced. he aftermath of an injury accident can be a grueling, stressful, and confusing time that extends the pain and suffering of the incident itself, and leaves a victim unsure about next steps, decisions, and who to turn to and trust. When insurance disputes or legal actions are required, the situation can be even more complicated. How does a person choose from the myriad personal injury firms on the horizon? As a doctor and a lawyer, Ramos combines his knowledge of law and medicine with a first-class approach to service. While working as an attending physician for 10 years at University Hospital, he was frequently called upon to give expert testimony on medical cases. Through more than 100 court appearances and hundreds of written testimonies, an interest in the law and a realization of other ways to help people came into focus.

“By testifying on all of those cases, I realized that a person’s story does not always get across in court if the person representing them does not have full expert understanding,” explained Dr. Ramos. So, he started working straight night shifts at the hospital and attending DU Law School during the day. City Assumes Nissen Reservoirs, but Water Issue Remains By Tina Eichner

Editor’s Note: I had a chance to sit down with City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) City Manager Jennifer Hoffman to talk about some of the current high-profile topics of concern to residents. We spoke about the Nissen Reservoirs, the Eagle Trace Golf Course, and the Broomfield Town Center. Each topic is its own complex issue with numerous aspects and community interests. Over the next few months, Our Broomfield will share local perspectives on these topics. Though intertwined with the golf course issue, this month we will separate and address the Reservoirs. In August 2024, the owner of Eagle Trace Golf Club (Miles Scully) sold the course's historical water rights—including Clear Creek water rights that date back to the 1895 and are tied to Nissen Reservoirs No. 1 and No. 2, as well as shares in the Community Ditch system—to Owl Creek Investments. The golf course had been leasing the water back since the sale, but that lease and irrigation access expires on November 1, 2026. CCOB acquired the Reservoirs and Clear Creek water rights this fall. CCOB did not acquire the Community Ditch shares, which historically provided most of the irrigation water for the golf course. While the Reservoirs and the Clear Creek water rights are legally bound together, those water rights do not always provide sufficient water to fill the reservoirs. The below is excerpted from a recent public letter from CCOB to the Eagle Trace Community Development Corporation. Additional public information is available at www.Broomfield.org.

These are junior water rights, meaning availability in any particular year depends on hydrologic conditions and calls from senior water-right holders. Due to the current drought conditions, that water has not been available this year. Instructions Fill a small bowl with cold water and add the onion. Soak for 15 minutes. Cut the corn kernels off the cobs. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the corn kernels and cook until golden brown around the edges, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Stir in 1 minced garlic clove, a pinch of chili flakes, a pinch of salt, and a few grinds of pepper, and cook for 30 seconds more. Turn the heat off. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, peaches, basil, and the drained onion. Add the corn and season with the remaining tablespoon of oil, 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and a few grinds of pepper. Gently toss to combine. Taste and adjust the seasonings, if needed. Serve immediately.
Peach Cobbler
Working with 1 peach at a time, start at the scored X on the base of the peach and use a paring knife to peel back and remove loosened skin. Discard the skins and repeat with remaining peaches. Cut each peach in half through the stem end and remove the pit. Slice the peeled peach halves into 1/2-inch thick wedges. In a large bowl, whisk together the light brown sugar, tapioca starch, salt, and vanilla paste. Stir in peach slices and toss to coat. Let stand for 30 minutes. For the Topping: In a food processor, pulse whole-wheat flour, light brown sugar, and salt until well-combined. Add oats and toasted pecans and pulse until pecans just start to break apart, 2 to 3 pulses. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles a coarse meal with some pea-sized pieces. To Bake: Scrape the macerated peaches and their juices into a 9by 9-inch square baking dish and press into an even layer. Sprinkle topping evenly over the filling. Bake until the topping is golden brown and juices are bubbling, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream.
For the Filling: • 4 1/2 pounds ripe peaches (about 15 medium peaches) • 3/4 cup light brown sugar • 3 tablespoons tapioca starch • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons vanilla For the Topping: • 1 cup whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 3/4 cup rolled oats • 1/2 cup pecans, toasted and coarsely chopped • Vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional) Directions Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350ºF. Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. In a large bowl, set up an ice bath by filling it halfway with cold water and ice. Set aside. For the Filling: Using a sharp paring knife, score small X at base of each peach; set aside. Using a slotted spoon or spider, lower the peaches into boiling water and cook until the scored skin at the base of each peach begins to loosen and peel back, about 1 minute. (Firmer peaches may need up to 3 minutes.) Opening Doors to
Homeownership in Broomfield

or many people, owning a home provides stability, security, and a way to build long-term wealth for their families. However, even for hardworking community members, saving enough money for a large down payment can still be a major challenge. To help make buying a home possible, the City and County of Broomfield Housing Division has partnered with the Colorado Housing Assistance Corporation (CHAC). Together, they offer the Broomfield Down Payment Assistance Program (DPA) to help eligible residents buy a home. This program uses State of Colorado Proposition 123 grant funding from the Department of Local Affairs to help lower local housing costs and support the area economy. By providing financial help to first-time or first-generation homebuyers, the program assists residents in purchasing homes so they can remain in Broomfield for the long term. To qualify as a first-time homebuyer, an individual cannot have owned a home within the past three years. While the program prioritizes first-generation homebuyers to help build generational wealth, all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply and will be considered. Eligible buyers purchasing a home within Broomfield city limits can receive up to 20% of the sale price for a down payment. Depending on an applicant's financial situation, some residents may receive a smaller percentage of assistance to best fit their needs. To help keep homes affordable over time, the program offers financial aid as a 30-year loan with zero interest. Buyers
do not need to make monthly payments on this loan. Repayment is only required at the end of the 30-year term or when the home is sold or transferred to a new owner. To qualify, buyers must meet certain household income limits and attend an accredited first-time homebuyers education course. They must also put at least $1,000 or 1% of the home purchase price toward the purchase, whichever amount is higher. This program helps more than just individual buyers, it helps the whole community grow stronger. For example, local resident John R. used the program to buy his home. Having a stable place to live gave him the foundation to start a local business and give back by applying to serve on a civic board. Other buyers include recent graduates who could afford to stay near their family and single parents looking for a safe home and community for themselves and their children. For buyers working toward homeownership, this program opens the door to making a down payment possible. Mark was born and raised in Broomfield and graduated from Broomfield High School in 1989 and the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993. His father, George Di Ciero, is the longest serving City and County Manager in Colorado and the namesake of the George Di Ciero City & County Building. In recognition of Broomfield's 65th anniversary, Mark recently presented a program at the Crescent Grange highlighting the role his father and others played in Broomfield’s success. Mark moved to Las Vegas in 1997 where he raised his daughter, Alexa, and hosted the city’s top-rated morning radio show for nearly twenty years before transitioning into family law at The Abrams & Mayo Law Firm. Q. What did you enjoy most about your radio career and now your work in family law? I loved the instant connection and interaction with our audience in real time every morning. It was an incredible feeling to share personal, real-life stories on air and watch the phone and text lines instantly light up with listeners wanting

to comment or share their own stories. Broadcasting from Las Vegas also allowed us to interview local and national celebrities on a regular basis. While family law is an entirely different career path, being able to assist people going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives is very rewarding. We handle complex divorce cases and contested child custody matters, so the job can get intense. Having gone through a difficult divorce myself, I genuinely understand what our clients are going through and can offer an empathetic perspective, which I think they appreciate. Q. What do you and your daughter enjoy doing in your free time? Hiking! It’s funny, I grew up in Colorado and very rarely took advantage of the outdoors. The mere thought of hiking used to make me cringe. Now, in my fifties, I find myself looking for hiking trails in the middle of the unbearable 110 degree desert heat. We also like to take advantage of the superb restaurants and shopping areas Las Vegas has to offer. Q. What was your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield? As a kid, I loved eating at Ike’s located at 34 Garden Center near the old city hall. After eating, my parents would give me a stack of quarters, and I would go to the Scoops ice cream shop across the street on Midway to play Pac-Man and Donkey Kong for hours. Midway Park will always have a special place in my heart and instantly brings back fantastic memories of Broomfield Days celebrations and holiday tree lighting ceremonies. It also brings back memories of a citizen who used to call my dad at the house in the 70s/80s claiming that a UFO was landing in the park nightly. Said claim could neither be confirmed nor denied. Q. Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community? Paul Derda; Broomfield’s Park and Recreation Director from 1978 to 2002. I called Paul the ‘Heart and Soul of Broomfield’ and the city’s “spark plug” during my Crescent Grange talk. Paul and his family—Martha, Debi, and Denise—are tremendous people. Paul’s vision of having a park or playground within walking distance of every child in Broomfield was something I was always aware of but took for granted. As I get older, I realize how remarkable that vision was and how it shaped the character of the city. Paul’s enthusiasm is infectious and his love for Broomfield is unmistakable. Q. Who inspires you to be a better person? My parents. My dad’s work ethic and passion for the people of Broomfield and my mom’s lessons of unconditional love and family traditions helped shape the person I am today.
