July is Our Broomfield’s Birthday Month. We are SIX this year! I was thinking about the evolution of Our Broomfield over the past six years and height marks inked in pen on a door frame to measure a child’s growth came to mind. The marks from year to year clearly illustrate increasing height, but I often wonder about the things that happened in the spaces between that drove that growth. Maybe the spaces between rings in a tree trunk is a better visual. Either way, I think we did a pretty good job watering, feeding, and nurturing our child/little tree last year.

We had a big year. Here are a few highlights:

• In partnership with Pat Monacelli and the Broomfield Area Chamber we published the third annual Broomfield Area Chamber Guide.

• We partnered with Hope Davis - Country Insurance to rigorously expand our social media presence.

• I hired my daughter Megan Mayes full time to handle more of the day-today operations so that I could focus on outreach and strategy.

• We expanded our content partnership with the City and County of Broomfield to continue to provide the ENTIRE community with the most critical local information each month. Thank you Jennifer Hoffman!

• We partnered with various Broomfield organizations including the Broomfield Historical Society and the Crescent Grange to present valuable local history programming.

• We supported more than a dozen local non-profits by sponsoring events, highlighting programs, promoting activities, directly funding, and volunteering our time.

• We started a new column about Broomfield living at home, written by my sister Andrea Wallace.

• Tammy Degenhart partnered with several local business leaders to launch the NoCo Community Mixer! Each month Tammy and Brent Paine - The Brent Paine Group, Rhonda Fisher - ServiceMaster Restore, and Hope Davis - Country Insurance, present a free, local networking event to gather Broomfield area citizens and businesses, as well as folks from communities in the greater Broomfield area!

• And this month I am proud to announce the relaunch of our website! We just pulled the curtain on the new www.ourbroomfield.com with our digital partner Kaylan Barry at KBCO Enterprises and we are very excited about the massive potential to expand our reach and connection power for our readers and advertisers online! More on that next month.

A Nation Worth Celebrating

OnJuly 4th, 2026, the United States of America turns 250 years old. Two hundred and fifty years.

A quarter of a millennium.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum – left, right, center, or somewhere completely your own – this is a time in our history that is incredibly special and worth pausing to celebrate together.

I am an optimist. I believe there are so many wonderful reasons to be thankful we live here! We can worship as we choose, or choose to not worship at all. We can speak our mind at a city hall meeting, stand on a corner with a sign, or build a business from nothing. We can move across the country for a fresh start or live quietly in a small town and raise your family in simple existence. We can think, speak, and assemble however we want. In much of the world, these actions remain dreams.

Our libraries are free. Our public universities have opened their doors to millions of first-generation students who changed their family trees forever. Our military volunteers defend not only our land but sometimes the people around the world who cannot defend themselves. Our doctors, scientists, and engineers have created treatments and technologies that have saved millions of lives around

the world. When disasters strike, Americans are often the first to arrive with aid. We also have so much beauty! Think about our national parks – there are so many to explore! And they belong to every single one of us. There is natural beauty from the Rocky Mountains to the Grand Canyon, and to the beaches, deserts, and farmland. Spectacular. I could go on and on. This is a pretty amazing place to call home amongst the purple mountain majesties and amber waves of grain of Broomfield in particular.

I know life is not perfect here. But I have decided that if I choose to live here, I am going to focus on all the incredible things surrounding me. My community, the opportunities, the innovation, the beauty, the freedom to be me.

As America turns 250, let’s celebrate the courage of those who came before us, the resilience of those we stand with today, and the opportunities we can create for tomorrow. Let’s honor every single person who has shaped this nation. America’s story has always been written in local communities – neighbors coming together, sharing ideas, and building things that last for the next generation. Let’s always believe that tomorrow can be better than today.

This July 4th let’s light a sparkler, watch the fireworks reflect off of a lake, sit with a neighbor, and raise a glass to 250 years of this grand, messy, magnificent land we live on. We are still free. And that, without question, is worth celebrating.

Explore the Outdoors with the Broomfield 100

Summer is the loveliest time in Colorado! The weather is warm, the sky is sunny, and the trails are open to visitors. Enjoy the great outdoors and learn about the City and County of Broomfield's beautiful trail system while being entered to win prizes by participating in the Broomfield 100!

The Broomfield 100 is an annual challenge to explore up to 25 trail routes or activities between June and September, with the challenge wrapping up at Broomfield Days on September 19th. Discover these trails by viewing the interactive map at Broomfield.org/Broomfield100 or picking up a physical passport at Broomfield recreation centers, Library, or the George DiCiero City and County Building.

In addition to enjoying the outdoors and learning about the trail system, Broomfield 100 participants can also earn prizes! Completed passports with 100 points or more can be turned in at Broomfield Days in exchange for a limited edition pair of Broomfield 100 socks. Checking in at trailhead check-in stations also earns participants a chance to win a monthly random drawing of the socks from June through September. The more check-ins you complete, the more chances you have to win a pair of socks! To complete a loop or trail for the challenge, it is not necessary to cover the entire mileage of a trail, but rather to visit the site, learn the trail connections, and enjoy the area.

While hiking these trails, please respect trail guidelines to make your experience as enjoyable as possible! For your safety, observe all posted signage and regulations, prepare yourself to be on trail by wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes, and dressing for the weather. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, first aid equipment, and insect repellent. All Broomfield trails allow dogs (on-leash) and are open to bikes and walkers. Many trails are ADA accessible, although some segments fall outside of ADA guidelines for slope and trail width. Before using any mobility devices on the trails, trail users should refer to the ADA Trail information at Broomfield.org/TrailMap. Be kind to other trail users by practicing trail etiquette. Stay on the right side of the trail, moving with the flow of

traffic, except to pass on the left. Do not block the path by standing in the middle; leave at least half of the trail open for passing. When bicycling, slow down and notify other trail users before passing. Bicyclists must yield to hikers. Stay on existing trails to avoid creating new trails and causing damage to the landscape. Each week, a different trail will be celebrated. Look for guidance about what you will find along the trail and details about the trail’s history. HiFi Shifts into High Gear with Pindustry

Also outside, construction continues to ramp up at the attached, 25-acre HiFi at FlatIron Crossing development. Visitors can now see visible progress across the site as steel rises for the highly anticipated "eatertainment" anchor, Pindustry, one of HiFi’s most exciting elements. he term farm-to-table often creates images of sprawling countryside fields, red barns, and long dirt to gravel roads.

In reality, a suburban backyard or balcony can become the foundation for a thriving way of life that brings fresh homegrown food straight to your table. At its core, farm to table is about connecting with where our food comes from. If you are a home gardener like myself, slowing down through the process of starting seeds to harvesting nourishing foods for your table is quite rewarding. Whether harvesting tomatoes from raised beds, clipping fresh herbs from a windowsill, or collecting eggs from a backyard coop, each step delivers on satisfaction that grocery store convenience cannot provide.

Beyond gardening, suburban farm-to-table includes mindful sourcing. Local farmers markets, community supported agriculture, and neighborhood produce stands offer seasonal favorites that are typically fresher than store-bought. Supporting local growers strengthens our community and keeps us connected to the rhythms of the seasons.

Speaking of community supported agriculture, I recently visited the FISH Community Teaching Garden on a sunny Saturday morning where I found at least a dozen volunteers busily weeding and planting the numerous raised beds. The garden is located on the grounds of Broomfield’s Salvation Army Corps at 1080 Birch St. With an eager smile, I was greeted by Butter Wilde, who quickly drew me into the 50 garden beds that are home to 100 tomato plants and hundreds of garlic plants which will be ready for harvest very soon. She emphasized the volunteer aspect of this effort: "Everyone here is working their hearts out so that people can eat.”

I also had the pleasure of speaking to Dayna Scott, a Broomfield FISH pillar, who was hanging a couple of new banners on the split-rail fence that surrounds the garden. Both of these wonderful women share the same passion that so many others also carry, which is assisting our neighbors in need. FISH stands for Fellowship In Serving Humanity. If you are not familiar with their work, I encourage you to check them out. The marketplace allows visitors

to shop for their food free of charge. Fresh produce leaves the shelves very quickly, so the community garden was born in 2024 with a small plot at their headquarters. Last year, with the support of The Salvation Army, the garden was expanded and continues to grow. While FISH continues to connect our neighbors in need to their market and other vital resources, Adopt-A-Garden joins the popular Adopt-A-Shelf program. Adopting a shelf helps to keep the most needed items stocked at the market. Adopting a garden is a way to support FISH with little to no expense. The commitment is just 6-8 hours per month and some potentially dirty fingernails. The opportunity to learn more about gardening and to meet some people who share common interests is icing on the cake! There are still beds available for adoption and volunteers are always welcomed. Volunteers gather on Saturdays from 8:30 - 11:00 am. I’ll be there to tend Our Broomfield’s newly adopted garden bed and help out where needed. I’d love to see you! Returns with Heartwarming, Whimsical Story

This year’s One Book One Broomfield selection couldn’t be a better summer read. The story is unexpected and remarkably original. One Book One Broomfield invites residents to read its 2026 selection: “The House in the Cerulean Sea” by author TJ Klune. Participate in book discussions and related events and hear from the author Thursday, Nov. 5th at the Broomfield Auditorium. Events are open to all, regardless of home library.

You’ll enjoy spending your time with the story's two main adult characters: Linus Baker, a middle-aged caseworker sent to inspect a faraway island orphanage, and Arthur Parnassus, the compassionate headmaster of the orphanage on Marsyas Island.

Author TJ Klune wrote “The House in the Cerulean Sea” and will speak at the One Book One Broomfield culminating event at 2:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5th at the Broomfield Auditorium, 3 Community Park Rd. The event is free and open to the public.

The children are the heart of the story. Lucy is a six-year-old boy who happens to be the Antichrist. Despite his frightening reputation, he is often funny, dramatic, and lovable. Talia is a young female gnome with a fierce personality. She loves gardening and carrying a shovel and is one of the funniest characters in the book. Then there’s Theodore, a shy and sweet wyvern (dragon-like creature) who treasures buttons and

shiny objects.

Phee is a forest sprite who has a strong connection to nature and considerable magical power. Sal is the oldest child at 14, and he transforms into a tiny Pomeranian when frightened. He is gentle and can be a bit timid. Chauncey is an unusual green blob-like creature with tentacles and eyes on stalks. His greatest dream is to become a bellhop and welcome guests.

The goal of Broomfield’s One Book program, dating back to 2006, is to create a citywide reading and discussion program that encourages residents to read the same book at the same time, creating a shared sense of community through literature.

Klune’s novel isn’t specifically a children’s book or youngadult read. It’s a story about found family, acceptance, and belonging, presented with humor, magic, and a hopeful message about seeing people for who they really are.

This book is fun to read and genuinely out of the ordinary.

Precision Vac: Living the American Dream Through Hard Work, Service, and Gratitude

As America celebrates 250 years, the story of Precision Vac owner Luli Bejtja is a reminder that the American Dream is still alive.

Born in the historic city of Shkodër, Albania, Luli grew up understanding perseverance. A gifted student, he earned a scholarship to attend the University of Florence in Italy. But when economic hardship struck his family back home, he set aside his own ambitions and took whatever work he could find, often juggling multiple jobs so he could send money home to support those he loved.

Life changed in 2004 when he met Danielle, a Colorado native serving as a missionary in Florence. The couple married in Colorado in 2009 and eventually returned to Italy before making Broomfield their permanent home in 2012. Arriving in America with a young family and a determination to succeed, Luli immediately went to work and committed himself to learning English and building a future. In 2016, surrounded by his wife, children, and family, he proudly became a United States citizen.

During the pandemic, when Danielle left her healthcare career to care for their two young sons, Luli sought another

way to provide security for his family. At age 41, he joined the Air Force Reserves, earning the nickname "Papa B" and the respect of fellow airmen half his age. Today, he proudly serves as a Staff Sergeant with the 39th Aerial Port Squadron.

But there was still one dream left to pursue.

After spending more than a decade helping others build successful businesses in the air duct cleaning industry, Danielle encouraged her husband to believe in himself and

pursue a dream of his own. In 2024, Precision Vac was born.

Red, White, and Blue Food to Celebrate our Nation’s Birthday

This time of year, it’s so fun to make food that fits the occasion. Since we are all celebrating a big birthday, I thought cooking with festive food colors might inspire more gatherings and reasons to connect. What a better meal than salad and dessert, haha!

Let’s start with dessert first. My good friend Courtney Schmidt makes this cake and it should be front and center at your table this summer. It’s so easy!

Flag Ice Cream Cake

Ingredients:

• 2 rectangle paper cartons Vanilla ice cream, such as Breyers

• 2 large containers strawberries, washed, cored and cut in half

• 2 large containers blueberries

• 1 large container whipped cream

Instructions:

Cut cartons from vanilla ice cream with scissors. Arrange ice cream on its side, then cut each lengthwise into 4 slices.

Arrange 4 ice cream slices in a 13 X 9-inch baking dish, pressing to form an even layer. Top with half of the blueberries and strawberries, then remaining 4 ice cream slices, pressing to form an even layer. Cover and freeze, at least 2 hours or until ready to serve.

Top with whipped cream, smoothing with spatula just before serving. Arrange berries in flag pattern, with blueberries in the upper left corner to represent “stars” and rows of strawberries to represent the “stripes”.

Salad with Goat Cheese, Strawberries, and Blueberries

Ingredients:

Salad Fixings

• 1 bag Spring Mix bag lettuce

• 1 bag Spinach & Arugula bag lettuce

• 1 heart Romaine lettuce

• 1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted

• 4 oz goat cheese, crumbled

• 1 cup strawberries, sliced

• 1 cup blueberries

• 2 avocados, diced Blueberry Vinaigrette

• ¾-1 cup avocado oil

• 1/2 cup blueberries (can also use frozen)

• ¼ cup white vinegar

• ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

• 2 tbsp honey

Instructions:

Combine all of the vinaigrette ingredients in a

food processor. Blend until smooth and blueberries are well blended. Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate.

Toast the slivered almonds in a skillet over medium-high heat. Don’t walk away from them or they will burn! Stir frequently with a wooden spoon until they start to get golden brown.

Combine the salad fixings in a large bowl, except the goat cheese and avocado.

Drizzle with vinaigrette, and toss with tongs, top with crumbled goat cheese and diced avocado and serve immediately.

Recipe Notes:

I like my dressing tangy, so I use equal parts oil and vinegar. Make yours to taste.

Use the combo of lettuces for best flavor.

I have also used walnuts in this salad, and I think pine nuts would be good too.

You could swap out the goat cheese for feta, but I love goat cheese.

Avocado oil is the only neutral oil that lets the other flavors shine. EVOO didn’t work well, but you can try.

The vinaigrette can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Yard Pals Volunteers: Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Closing an important gap in essential home maintenance for neighbors, the Broomfield Pals program was created several years ago to keep neighbors safe and their homes compliant. The program consists of two parts: Snow Pals during the winter and Yard Pals during the spring and summer. The Yard Pals program connects local volunteers with neighbors who need lawn mowing support for the spring and summer months. The program brings neighbors together and ensures residents of Broomfield receive the support they need to care for their homes.

Each spring, Yard Pals volunteers assist a Broomfield resident with lawn mowing support for neighbors in need. Volunteers are matched with a resident near their home, allowing for flexibility in scheduling and as a convenience to both the volunteer and the resident. Volunteers are asked to commit to mowing the front and back lawn twice a month for one resident for the season. This program is designed to help fixed-income and low-mobility residents stay code compliant, providing peace of mind to residents on the program.

These hometown volunteers provide a critical service, especially for seniors in Broomfield. But not all residents who need assistance are seniors. Some Yard Pals participants could have medical

conditions that prohibit them from engaging in physically demanding activity, while others may be providing 24-hour care to their loved ones, leaving them without the time necessary to complete outdoor chores.

One of the most inspiring things about the Yard Pals program is the relationships formed between volunteers and their neighbors. While not a program requirement, some volunteers stay in touch with their Pals year-round, attending outings together or helping with projects beyond the growing season. These connections between neighbors fuel the small-town sense of community Broomfield is known for fostering. In short, the Yard Pals program has the ben-

efit of continually building community.

Meet Michelle Pearson

Michelle Pearson and her family

career in Virginia, married this guy I met in middle school who convinced me to move back with him to Colorado, and started teaching at Annunciation School in Denver. During that time, I worked to help preserve historic buildings in Colorado, developed educational curriculum on historic places and for STEM and civics. I wrote two books: Historic Places of Denver for Children and Families, and Historic Sacred Places of Denver. I became a White House Fellow in Education working for the White House Historical Association, and was an international Fulbright Fellow to Japan. After we started our family, I joined the Adams 12 Five Star Schools.

Q. What CCOB organizations have you served on?

I’ve served on the Broomfield Library Board, connected with the Broomfield Historic Grange, and I collaborate with the Broomfield Veterans Museum. I have served on a variety of focus groups associated with the city, contributed to the conversations about the community re-examining the development of the Broomfield downtown area, and currently serve on the Broomfield Landmark Board. I am a member of the Front Range Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter which partners with the Broomfield Historical Society.

Q. What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?

I love the Broomfield County Commons for the walkways, the open skies, the ability to walk with our dogs, the fields, and wildflowers. I love Mountain Thai Kitchen restaurant, not just for the wonderful food, but for the amazing service.

About Michelle Pearson

Michelle has lived in Broomfield for some 30 years. She and her husband, Kirk, raised their three children, Myra, Alex, and Drew here. Michelle is an educator and historic preservationist. She has taught 23 years in the Adams 12 Five Star Schools at Hulstrom Options and Century Middle School. Michelle was named the 2007 Colorado Apex Technology Teacher of the Year, the 2011 Colorado Teacher of the Year, and in 2025 was inducted in the National Teacher Hall of Fame.

She has received state and national awards in historic preservation for her work connecting students and community members with preserving historic places, including the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. She has served as a White House Fellow in Education during the Bush, Clinton, Obama, and Biden administrations. Michelle and Kirk enjoy volunteering in their community, traveling, reading, and herding their three border collies when she is not teaching.

Q. What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I have always loved teaching and connecting my students to the world around them through the literature they read and the places they study.

Q. Tell us a little about your career path. I went to school at Mary Washington College and graduated with five majors, with a focus on education and historic preservation. I started my teaching

Q. Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?

This is an incredibly hard question because I have met so many people in Broomfield that are interesting and just plain wonderful to share time with. However, Colleen Sawyer, a long time resident, educator, arts enthusiast, avid library supporter, and volunteer extraordinaire, is wonderful. Her research and activities are fascinating, and her wealth of knowledge of Broomfield is tremendous.

Q. What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield?

Broomfield is what you make of it. Be present, be involved, volunteer with an organization, share in an event. Any one of these special moments will allow you to see and experience why Broomfield is as special as it is.

Q. Who or what inspires you to be a better person?

My mother and father instilled in our family the notion that love of family, and service to others are hallmarks of a good life. Kirk and I have strived to help our children live those same values and we continually look for ways to serve others, especially in Broomfield. Broomfield has always been our home as a family, and the people here, along with the city, have those values which makes this city incredibly special.
