EDITOR Our Beginnings Happy New Year, Broomfield! I hope that this past holiday season brought you joy, happiness, rest, and renewal. I've titled this column "Beginnings" not only because it is a new year, but because most of my beginnings are right here in Broomfield, and I have a new one to share with you. As you know, Our Broomfield is all about Broomfield, and for me, it is also very rooted in family - much like my life in Broomfield! And my husband and two daughters are very much part of the publication. We all grew up here and it is our only true "home." I could not publish this magazine without their love and support. This month I am pleased to announce that my daughter Megan Mayes is moving into a new role as Managing Editor and Sales Coordinator. I have many, many commitments, and in the past year it became clear that I needed to adjust a few responsibilities to balance out the workload a bit. Megan has been involved with the magazine since day one, and is a gifted writer and organizer as well. She has an innate understanding of the content needs and shares my passion for the community and its many vital organizations. I will continue to lead editorial direction, represent at events, and pen this column. Megan will assume editing and content management, as well as take on advertising sales coordination including accounting and print ad management. Tammy, of course, will continue to lead sales, and Stacey maintains responsibility for design. The change will be invisible to most, but for me, I have the chance to more closely partner with my daughter and take advantage of her creativity and finance expertise. I am very excited about this! It is yet another moment where I recognize Broomfield as a prism for my past, present, and future. The article on the future of the Eagle Trace Golf Course provides another. Growing up, our family home was just a few blocks away from the Golf Course and while attending Broomfield High School, I walked along its Main Street edge each day to and from school. I knew then how lucky we were to have such a beautiful and accessible course in the middle of town. But now that beautiful asset is at risk. You can read all about the water rights issue and the questions surrounding the future of the course on pages 18-19. I am hoping for the impacted community that the new year brings solutions, answers, and a path forward. January is not only a chance for a fresh start, at Our Broomfield it is the moment to acknowledge the winners of our own Best of Broomfield contest, Our Favorites! Congratulations to all of the winners which you can read about beginning on page 20. Check out our reader-selected winners and next time you plan to dine, hire, or shop, please consider trying out one of these esteemed Broomfield area businesses. Finally, 2026 kicks off Colorado's 150th anniversary celebration, its sesquicentennial, coinciding with America's 250th (semi sesquicentennial) celebration. On top of that, it is the 65th Anniversary of the City of Broomfield and the 25th for Broomfield County! A series of related local events is planned for the full year, and we are excited to be part of one of them; the reprise of the Our Broomfield History Lecture Series produced in partnership with the Crescent Grange. The first program will be held on January 20, and you can find out all of the details on page 10. It is a great way to learn some details about Broomfield's beginnings that I'll bet you never knew! BackStory Theatre invites young actors to audition for two exciting productions at the Broomfield Community Center. The first is 12 Angry Jurors, a classic drama where 12 individuals must overcome their differences and biases to reach a unanimous verdict in a young man's murder trial. Auditions for this show are on January 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; these will be group auditions requiring no preparation, and rehearsals begin January 5, leading to performances on March 14. The second production is Trap, an unnerving, documentary-style play about a mysterious event where an entire audience falls unconscious except for one person. Auditions for this show are on January 10 and require a prepared 60-second dramatic monologue, a resume, a headshot, and a conflict list; rehearsals begin January 27, with performances scheduled for April 25 and 26. Our Broomfield History Lecture Series: Broomfield’s Beginnings

Have you wondered about how Broomfield came to be? The Broomfield History Speaker Series presented by Our Broomfield Magazine and the Crescent Grange will dive into numerous aspects of our community and tell the stories of the creation of Broomfield. The series kicks off on January 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Crescent Grange with an introductory presentation about the beginnings of Broomfield and the Crescent Grange. Join Our Broomfield Editor and Publisher Tina Eichner, Broomfield Museum Coordinator David Allison, and Crescent Grange President Barbara Gehring for an evening of storytelling about the early days of Broomfield. The speaker series format will be a one-hour live, in-person topical presentation with a local “expert” or panel aligned

BUSY FAMILIES Embracing the European Way of Life in the New Year

hen I was a sophomore in college, I studied abroad in Denmark. Our school owned a youth hostel in a quaint little town called Aalborg. For six months, what started as 40 strangers living together turned into one of the most transformative and impactful times of our lives. I believe learning European culture together shaped who we are and what we continue to yearn for to this day. Let me preface by saying Americans are exhausted. We work long hours, take fewer vacations, and pride ourselves on how busy we are. Yet a quick jaunt across the Atlantic stands an entire culture that has mastered what we desperately need: the art of living well without burning out. These are my observations from 30 years ago and still hold true from my travels abroad today. Europeans prioritize social connection. I remember going to my homestay family’s house for the first time to have a meal. This meal went on for hours. They would eat slowly and have courses and embrace meaningful conversations. I wasn’t used to this. I wanted to eat fast and get back to being busy. Slowing down and learning to connect over a meal was pivotal in our growth as college students. Europeans also embrace the sacred lunch break at work. They don’t sit at their desk and scarf down a sandwich while answering emails. It’s a genuine pause in their day to connect with others over a meal or by themselves. They return to work refreshed rather than depleted. I also noticed that Europeans tend to savor quality over quantity. They buy fewer, higher-quality items, and take time to enjoy experiences. They don’t grab coffee to go while in a rush, they sip it slowly at a café. They buy fresh ingredients for each meal instead of stuffing their cabinets with processed foods. They actually go on holiday and use all of their vacation time instead of feeling proud that they only used two of the four weeks they were given. We also learned to walk everywhere. European cities are built for walking, and it was such a natural stress reliever for us. We could walk to markets, cafes, school … almost anywhere we needed to be. I love walking and this is still my preferred

exercise to this day. A tip to incorporate more walking into your day is to try walking meetings at work, parking further away at stores, and taking a 15-minute walk after dinner to wind down for a relaxing evening ahead. Many European countries still observe Sunday closures for shops, creating a societal pause. Taking a day each week for rest and recreation is healthy. It’s okay to let your friends and family know that every Sunday you won’t be answering emails and texts. They can call you if it’s urgent. Can you imagine if all humans, young and old, were forced to take a rest day each week without tech and screens? I bet we would be able to feel the positive energy shirt around the world. My wish for each of you in the new year is to ask yourself this question on a regular basis: “Am I living, or just accomplishing?” Walk away from your computer, walk past the pile of dirty dishes in the sink and go dance to your favorite song. Why Rate Adjustments Are Needed

To maintain that reliability for years to come, the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) is continuing the five-year financial plan launched in 2025 to ensure the long-term sustainability of the community’s water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Broomfield's utility systems are financially independent, operating on a self-supporting model funded entirely by user rate fees, not taxes. These fees are essential, directly funding the critical maintenance, operation, and reinvestment needed to maintain infrastructure for reliable water delivery and safe wastewater treatment.

The next rate adjustment under the five-year plan will take effect January 1, 2026. For the average single-family household, that is estimated to be a $16.89 per month increase across water, wastewater, and stormwater services. Investing in the Future The 2026 rate adjustments ensure Broomfield can: • Maintain and replace aging pipelines, pumps, and treatment systems. • Comply with state and federal water quality standards. • Fund major capital improvements, including two new water storage tanks and the expansion of the wastewater treatment facility — both critical to meeting current and future demand. Several factors make these rate adjustments necessary: • Aging infrastructure: Much of Broomfield’s utility network is decades old and requires more frequent maintenance and equipment replacement to ensure safe and reliable service to the Broomfield community. • Rising operational costs: Inflation, supply chain challenges, and new regulatory standards have increased operating costs. • Closing the gap: For nearly 20 years, Broomfield’s utility rates have remained well below regional averages. Adjustments are needed to maintain high-quality service and prepare for future needs.

Eagle Trace Golf Course Faces Uncertain Future Amid Water Rights Situation Homeowners and city officials navigate complex water rights, potential property transfers, and alternatives for the community’s 78-acre golf course

he future of Eagle Trace Golf Course has become a pressing issue for homeowners and city officials as questions arise around water rights, property ownership and the long-term viability of the course itself. The property, a 78-acre golf course located across from Broomfield High School, has been a centerpiece of the community for decades. The owner and current operator of Eagle Trace Golf Course sold the property’s water rights in August 2024 to Owl Creek Investments, a company that buys and sells water rights, for about $4 million. The sale included the Marshall shares — water rights tied to the Frico Ditch, which historically supplied the reservoirs used to water the course. These rights are considered the most valuable part of the property’s water assets. The sale also included easements for the reservoirs, which govern how the water is managed and accessed. Along with the water rights, the reservoirs are central to maintaining both the golf course and the surrounding neighborhoods. The sale required a “dry out” of the reservoirs after November 2026, a contractual requirement that obligates water rights owners to stop diverting water from a particular source, effectively letting a reservoir, ditch or stream run dry. This often occurs when water rights are sold, transferred or otherwise restricted, and the new owner is no longer entitled to take water under those rights after a set deadline.

Over the past year, Bruce Erley, a longtime Eagle Trace homeowner and current president of the largest homeowners association in the area, and other concerned homeowners have formed a task force, eventually incorporating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called the Eagle Trace Community Development Corporation (CDC). The CDC allows the community to work as a recognized legal entity, giving them the authority to engage attorneys, engineers and other professionals to address the situation. The organization has received contributions from surrounding HOAs, individual residents and city supporters to fund legal and technical evaluations. The most pressing issue is finding a new water source to supply water to maintain the course and preserve surrounding property values, Erley said. The community has identified two potential sources – the Clear Creek water rights and access to the Larimer-Fox Junior Reserve Aquifer below the property. Clear Creek water can be directed into the reservoirs each spring, and the aquifer could be tapped, though drilling and pumping costs are significant. Meanwhile, the condition of the golf course itself presents additional challenges. Erley noted

that maintenance has been neglected for several years, and the irrigation system is aging. “Whoever gets the golf course, if it continues to operate as a golf course, is going to have to spend $2.5 million dollars just replacing the irrigation system,” Erley said. The current owner only intends to operate the course through November 2026, said Erley. Homeowners and city officials are exploring several alternatives for the property if it does not continue as a traditional golf course. One idea is transforming portions of the course into open space or recreational trails, which could preserve green space for residents. Another proposal involves

Residential development, while occasionally mentioned, is considered highly unlikely to pass city approval due to zoning and community concerns. Lastly, there is the scenario in which the property could become feral land if no viable plan is implemented, which would significantly decrease nearby property values and present challenges for stormwater management. Erley emphasized the importance of city involvement in resolving the water rights issue. Broomfield is currently negotiating with Owl Creek Investments to acquire easements to the reservoirs and access to the Clear Creek water rights. This would allow the city to continue using the reservoirs for stormwater retention, which has been in place for over 50 years. The city would also assume responsibility for maintenance and improvements for the reservoir, estimated at over $1 million for deferred upkeep on the reservoirs. Ownership of the golf course itself is another critical component. Erley said that once the water issues are resolved, the CDC may be able to negotiate with the current owner to acquire the property. While the full market value of the course as a development opportunity exceeds what the CDC

can afford, the nonprofit structure opens the possibility of a donation, allowing the owner to claim a tax deduction for the value he assigns to the property. In parallel, the CDC is exploring partnerships with potential investors who could help fund improvements and operations. This would allow the community to maintain control while ensuring the golf course remains a viable business, whether as a full 18-hole course, a smaller executive course, or a combination of golf and public space. “There’s a lot of moving parts,” Erley said. “But at this point, we’re moving in the right direction.” Resident sentiment strongly favors keeping the property as a golf course. While no formal survey has been conducted, anecdotal feedback from the community indicates that homeowners value the aesthetic and recreational benefits the course provides, said Erley. Maintaining some form of golf activity also aligns with practical considerations, including water management, stormwater retention, and overall neighborhood appeal. Looking ahead, the next steps involve the city negotiating agreements with Owl Creek, the CDC assessing aquifer resources, drilling feasibility, negotiating with the current owner, and finding an investor to fund a possible acquisition and ongoing operation of the course. The CDC anticipates it may take until November 2026 — the deadline for the dry out of the reservoirs — to complete these arrangements and secure a longterm plan for the property. In the meantime, the organization is raising funds, consulting with water engineers, and considering creative solutions to maintain the land in a beneficial way for both the community and the city. erving as a member of one of Broomfield's Boards and Commissions is a great way to get involved in the community. You can help create a diverse representation of Broomfield by providing your unique perspectives and input on a variety of upcoming projects impacting the future of your community. What does it mean to volunteer for a board or commission? While each board is unique in scope, all volunteers attend scheduled meetings, provide recommendations on issues and/ or projects and have the best interest of Broomfield residents in mind. Residents can apply starting January 2 and visit Broomfield.org/BandC for more information about the available positions, scope of each board, schedules, meeting dates, and more. You can also learn about serving on a board or commission at an upcoming open house. Attend the boards and commissions open house January 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the lobby of the George Di Ciero City and County building for information. At the open house, you can talk with current members and staff liaisons to learn about the different committees and what serving on a board or commission entails. Attendees can also receive application support and complete the application and/or the SparkHire one-way video interview on the spot! Two-year, four-year, and alternate positions are available. Cultivating Calm Through Food

ave you ever set a New Year's resolution to eat better, just to feel disappointment when you fall off the healthy eating train? How about we look at food differently this year. What if we set ourselves up for success by deciding we want emotional harmony in our lives, and that it can be accomplished by what we put in our bellies? We’ve all done it. We are busy and grab quick fixes like caffeine, sugar or greasy fast food on the run. And we end up feeling wired, depleted or even sick to our stomachs.

Saffron Rice Pilaf

Something very beautiful happens when we offer ourselves food that is grounding and nourishing. Whole grains, steady proteins, leafy greens or a handful of nuts. It feels like a gentle hug. It reminds our body that it is safe. Perhaps if we look at food this way, we can create eating patterns and choices that become a daily act of self-love and care Here are two of my favorite recipes to make when I’m in a hurry but also want my body to feel nourished and loved. They are easy, delicious, and great for company and leftover for lunch the next day. butter has melted. Add shallot and 1/2 teaspoon salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until shallot has softened, about 4 minutes. Add garlic; cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in drained rice; cook, stirring constantly, until grains are evenly coated in oil, about 1 minute. Add stock, saffron mixture, and 1/2 teaspoon salt to rice mixture; gently shake saucepan to ensure rice is evenly submerged. Bring to a simmer, uncovered, over medium-high. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and reduce heat to low. Cook, covered, 12 minutes. Do not remove lid. Remove from heat; let steam, covered, 5 minutes. Uncover and fluff rice using a fork. Fold in cherries, pistachios, cilantro, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Transfer to a bowl and serve with lime wedges.

Serves 8 Ingredients • 2 cups uncooked white basmati rice • 3/4 tsp saffron threads • 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice, plus lime wedges for serving • 2 Tbsp water • 2 Tbsp olive oil • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter • 1 large shallot, finely chopped (about 1/2 cup) • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided • 2 medium garlic cloves, finely chopped (about 1 1/2 teaspoons) • 2 1/4 cups chicken stock • 3/4 cup unsweetened dried cherries • 1/2 cup shelled salted roasted pistachios, chopped • 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro, tender stems and leaves Directions Place rice in a medium bowl. Add cold water to cover rice; using your hands, swish and agitate rice in water for 10 to 15 seconds. Pour off water and repeat washing process until water is mostly clear, 4 to 5 times. Pour off water. Add cold water to cover rice by at least 1 inch; let soak, uncovered, at room temperature 30 minutes. (Rice grains should become plump and opaque.) Drain rice in a fine wire-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water for 10 to 15 seconds. Let rice drain completely, about 30 seconds. Set aside. While rice soaks, grind saffron threads into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Stir together saffron powder, lime juice, and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl until combined. Set aside. Balsamic Sheet Pan Chicken

with Sweet Potatoes Serves 4, ready in 45 minutes Ingredients • 20 oz. sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into 3/4-inch cubes • 16 oz. brussels sprouts, bottoms trimmed, halved • 2 Tbsp olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 5 slices bacon, diced • 1 1/2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs, diced into 1 1/4-inch cubes • 1/2 medium red onion, diced into chunks • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 Tbsp. minced fresh rosemary • 2 Tbsp. minced fresh parsley (optional)

• 3 Tbsp. store-bought balsamic glaze Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a rimmed 18- by 13-inch baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Place sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts on baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil then toss to evenly coat. Sprinkle bacon over everything then roast in preheated oven 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Add chicken, red onions, garlic and rosemary to pan then season everything with salt and pepper and toss to evenly coat. Spread into an even layer (don't overlap chicken pieces). Return to oven and roast until chicken has cooked through (center of thickest pieces should register 165 degrees) for about 17 - 20 minutes longer. About Hope Davis

Hope Davis has lived in Broomfield since 2015, and in that time, she has enjoyed immersing herself in the community alongside her husband, Marcus and two sons, Jackson (19) and Jude (16). As a local COUNTRY Financial agent, Hope says she brings a personal touch to the insurance industry. Hope is also active in supporting several local organizations. Our Broomfield caught up with Hope and this is what she had to say. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: As an agency owner with COUNTRY Financial, what I enjoy most is being a part of the Broomfield community. It’s incredibly rewarding working directly with my clients and providing them with auto, home, business, and life insurance to protect what matters most to them. Q: Tell us a little about your career path. A: After dedicating 12 years to raising my two sons as a stay-at-home mom, I transitioned into the restaurant industry, taking on roles such as restaurant and catering management. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdowns prompted a shift in my career. While supporting my sons through remote learning, I seized the opportunity to obtain my insurance licensing. Q: What do you and your family enjoy during your free time? A: I love the gym and I am passionate about maintaining my fitness. I also love working on jigsaw puzzles, reading, and cooking for my family. Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield? A: My favorite restaurant in Broomfield is The Burns Pub. As for parks, I really enjoy Cotton Creek. My boys grew up going there. Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present you’ve met in our community? A: Tammy Degenhart. She's great at connecting people and giving back to our community, making a real difference. When I first met Tammy she welcomed me and made me feel like I belonged. Her kindness and generosity have had a huge impact on my life, and I am so grateful to have her as a mentor and friend. Q: You said you enjoy cooking. What do you like about cooking? A: What I enjoy most about cooking is the creativity involved in making new recipes. I love that it's a way I can show up for my family every day and express my love for them. Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield? A: Broomfield's uniqueness lies in its ability to offer both city vibes and natural escapes. Being so close to Denver is great, but the real draw is the proximity to the mountains and trails. Q: What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield? A: Broomfield is a place where community matters, so jump in and get involved! Whether it's through local groups, volunteering or neighborhood get-togethers, it's a great way to connect with people and really feel like you belong. Q: Who or what inspires you to be a better person? A: Without a doubt, my friends and family are my biggest inspiration. They're the people who know me best, see my potential, and support me in my journey to become a better version of myself.
