Spring cleaning is made simple through Broomfield’s Annual Spring Cleanup which is provided at no charge by the City and County of Broomfield and gives residents an opportunity to dispose of large, nonhazardous items that trash haulers do not normally pick up. During the 2025 Spring Cleanup, haulers made 9,125 stops throughout Broomfield to pick up waste from Broomfield homes and apartment complexes. A total of 1,014.3 tons of waste were collected, of which 73.85 tons of wood were recycled and 18.09 tons of metal. The Cleanup is completed in zones over four Saturdays beginning April 18. A Clean Home Creates A Clean Mind

In the spirit of embracing the theme of our April home issue, I want to share insight on how decluttering your home can also clear your mind. Last month I talked about ways to clear your mental clutter, and this month I would love to share easy ways to refresh your home that will ultimately lead to a refreshed mind. There is something exhilarating about throwing open your windows on a warm spring morning, rolling up your sleeves, and deciding that today is the day to let go of things that no longer bring us joy. Spring cleaning is a ritual as old as civilization itself. Science confirms what our ancestors intuitively understood: the state of our home has a profound and direct impact on the state of our mind.

Physical clutter competes for our attention. Every pile of unread mail, every drawer stuffed with forgotten odds and ends, sends a signal to our nervous system that there is unfinished business here. Over time, that low-level stress accumulates and we learn to live with it but it wreaks havoc on our health.

A cluttered, disorganized space can fuel feelings of anxiety, helplessness, and even shame. On the other hand, a clean and organized home creates a sense of control; a feeling that you are in charge of your surroundings rather than a servant to the mayhem.

Spring cleaning also carries a symbolic weight. It marks a transition, a shedding of the heaviness of winter, and an invitation for renewal. Engaging in this ritual can act as a powerful psychological reset, a way of saying I am ready for something new.

The good news is that you do not need to transform your entire home in a single weekend. Small, purposeful acts of tidying can deliver surprisingly significant mental rewards. Here are some places to start:

Clear your entryway. The first space you see when you come home sets the emotional tone for your entire evening. A tidy entrance — hooks for coats, a basket for shoes — creates an immediate sense of calm upon arrival.

Tackle one drawer or shelf at a time. Decluttering feels overwhelming as a whole project but manageable as a series of small ones. Spend fifteen minutes on a single kitchen drawer. The satisfaction you feel will build your motivation naturally.

Let in the light. Clean your windows and pull back heavy curtains. Natural light is one of the most effective mood regulators we have, boosting

serotonin and reducing fatigue. Something as simple as washing hand and dog-nose prints off of your front door can genuinely lift your spirits. Refresh your bedroom. Sleep quality is so important to your mental health. Washing your bedding, clearing nightstand clutter, and removing screens from the bedroom are small acts that can meaningfully improve the quality of your rest. And in turn, your rested mental state can fuel your entire wellbeing for the next day.

Donate with intention. Rather than simply discarding things, try donating them. Knowing that your unwanted items will be useful to someone else turns the act of letting go from loss into generosity, and generosity is one of the most reliable pathways to feeling good.

Spring is an invitation that asks us to look honestly at our spaces and at ourselves, to decide what we choose to carry forward and what we are ready to leave behind. A cleaner home will not take away all of our problems, but it can quiet the chatter in our minds, restore a sense of order, and give us a safe space to relax.

How Broomfield Financed Critical Infrastructure the Right Way

The City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) has recently secured financing for critical-function infrastructure — not through market timing, but through years of disciplined budgeting, smart debt management, and regular financial inspection by independent global institutions.

CCOB is moving forward with financing for three essential infrastructure projects: a new Police and Courts facility, expanded water storage, and a major wastewater system upgrade. These investments are not discretionary amenities. They are essential services needed for public safety, operational demands, regulatory obligations, and the realities of a growing community.

The most important point is not simply that CCOB secured favorable interest rates; it is how the Broomfield City Council and CCOB leadership intentionally prepared over multiple years to make sure they could afford these new loans.

Before taking on new debt, CCOB took deliberate steps to strengthen its financial position.

• Paying off old loans: The city paid off older, more expensive debt first

• Looking ahead: Experts checked to make sure CCOB could afford new payments without hurting emergency savings or daily services

• Timing: CCOB timed the loans carefully to get the best deal

This strategy is fully aligned with city council-adopted debt policy: only borrow money for long-lasting, essential projects and keep CCOB’s credit score strong for future leaders. In this case, CCOB only borrowed money after paying off old debts and only for facilities that met the definition of critical infrastructure that could no longer wait.

Evolving How Broomfield Plans for the Future

Looking forward, CCOB is evolving how long-range financial planning is done. Historically, the Long-Range Financial Plan (LRFP) served as a snapshot in time. In March 2026, staff introduced an updated LRFP that reflects a more agile, multifaceted, and multi-pronged approach to financial analysis. The updated framework integrates planning and development activity, permit pipelines, market volatility, and evolving financial realities alongside traditional revenue and expenditure projections. Rather than static forecasts, the new LRFP provides a living financial model that can accommodate regularly updated

variables. This allows city council decisions to be driven by data and a clear understanding of how those decisions may impact CCOB’s future financial state.

Independent Oversight and Third-Party Validation

CCOB’s financial position remains subject to ongoing, rigorous third-party scrutiny. Moody’s conducted in-depth assessments of the CCOB’s economy, reserves, governance practices, and debt profile. Royal Bank of Canada and other institutional partners independently evaluated CCOB’s financial structure and risk during the bond process. Additionally, independent

auditors spend weeks every year reviewing CCOB’s transactions, internal controls, and financial statements across the General Fund and enterprise funds. This repeated inspection by globally recognized institutions validates that CCOB’s financial practices are conservative, transparent, and structurally sound.

Because of this disciplined preparation, CCOB was able to responsibly finance the following:

• A replacement Police and Courts facility to address overcrowding, safety, and functional issues

• Water storage infrastructure necessary for system reliability and fire protection

• Wastewater system upgrades required to meet capacity and regulatory standards

More importantly, CCOB has positioned itself so future city councils inherit manageable debt, a stable budget, and strong reserves, and the analytical tools needed to make informed, intentional decisions in an increasingly complex financial environment. This is what sustainable local government finance looks like. It is disciplined, policy-driven, independently reviewed, and designed to evolve alongside the community it serves.

Planning Your Front Range

Gardening along Colorado’s Front Range is both rewarding and challenging. With our intense sun, unpredictable spring frosts, clay‐heavy soils, and wild temperature swings, success relies on thoughtful planning and choosing crops that thrive in this high desert climate. By combining cool‐season vegetables, warm‐season favorites, herbs, companion plants, and pollinator‐friendly flowers, you can create a productive and resilient garden from early spring through fall.

The growing season along the Front Range typically runs from mid‐May to early October, so starting seeds indoors is essential for many crops. Onions and rosemary benefit from the earliest start, often in January or February. Peppers, oregano, and cauliflower follow in February or March, while tomatoes and basil can be started in March or early April. Use a high‐quality seed‐starting mix, strong grow lights, and consistent moisture to give seedlings a healthy beginning. My son, Shane, gifted me an Aero Garden one Christmas and it has been a valuable tool for seed starting.

Before transplanting outdoors, seedlings must be hardened off—a gradual process of exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. This step is especially important in Colorado, where spring winds and UV intensity can shock tender plants. As soon as the soil can be worked in April, you can plant onions and transplant cauliflower which tolerate cool nights and even light frosts. Garlic, although typically planted in the fall, emerges early in spring and continues growing until midsummer. Although fall is optimal, this is a good time to amend your soil by mixing in compost a couple of weeks before planting.

After Mother’s Day—when the risk of frost finally drops—you can safely transplant tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, basil, rosemary, and oregano. These heat‐loving plants thrive in the Front Range’s sunny, dry summers. Tomatoes and peppers prefer deep, amended soil with plenty of compost. Squash and cucumbers appreciate consistent watering and benefit from mulch to retain moisture. Herbs like basil, oregano, and rosemary flourish in warm weather and well‐drained soil. Companion planting is very beneficial to deter harmful pests while attracting

beneficial pollinators. Tomatoes grow well alongside basil, which enhances flavor and repels insects. Peppers benefit from being near onions, which deter aphids. Cauliflower appreciates the company of aromatic herbs like oregano and rosemary, which can help mask its scent from cabbage moths. Squash and cucumbers thrive when planted with marigolds, which help reduce damaging soil‐borne critters and attract pollinators.

Speaking of pollinators, they are essential for 80% of all flowering plants, especially fruit bearing varieties. The fruits (tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and peppers) typically filling our vegetable gardens are dependent upon the process of pollination for a bountiful harvest. Herbs greatly benefit from this activity as well. Adding marigolds, sunflowers, and lavender creates a vibrant ecosystem that supports bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. Sunflowers provide height and structure, lavender offers long‐lasting blooms and fragrance, and marigolds fill gaps with bright color and pest‐repelling power.

By combining early seed starting, strategic planting, companion pairings, and pollinator‐friendly flowers, you can create a thriving Colorado Front Range vegetable garden. With thoughtful planning and a bit of seasonal awareness, your garden will reward you with abundant harvests and a lively, healthy ecosystem.

Broomfield H.S.’s JAM Tradition Continues for Its 36th Year

s prom night approaches at Broomfield High School, students are not the only ones preparing for a memorable evening. Behind the scenes, hundreds of parents, volunteers, and staff members are hard at work creating one of the school’s most beloved traditions: Just After Midnight, better known as JAM.

Now celebrating its 36th year, JAM continues its long-standing mission of providing a safe and fun place for juniors and seniors to gather after prom. Since its beginning in 1990, the event has offered students an alcohol-free environment where they can celebrate together and make lasting memories while giving families peace of mind on one of the most exciting nights of the school year.

This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, May 2. Before students arrive, the community will have the chance to experience the transformation of Broomfield High School during the popular community walk through from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parents, neighbors, and local supporters are invited to tour the decorated school and see firsthand the creativity and effort that goes into preparing for the big night.

When the clock strikes midnight, the doors open to students and the celebration continues until 4 a.m. JAM is open to all juniors and seniors, whether or not they attended prom. Throughout the night students can enjoy games, music, food, prizes, and themed rooms that turn familiar hallways into something entirely new.

Leading the effort this year is JAM chairperson Heather Dunham, who has been involved with the event for several years. With the help of an experienced team and more than 400 volunteers, Dunham and the JAM committee are continuing the tradition that has become a highlight of the BHS experience for generations of students.

While JAM is known for its creativity and excitement, its purpose runs much deeper. The event has

long been supported by families, educators, and local leaders who recognize the importance of providing students with a safe place to celebrate on prom night.

Broomfield Police Chief A. Enea Hempelmann shared how meaningful the event is for the community. “Spring and prom season are exciting and wonderful times of the year for students, parents, and faculty. Prom is a tradition enjoyed by many generations that creates fond high school memories that last a lifetime. The Broomfield Just After Midnight event brings families, faculty, and the community together to host a fun-filled after prom event in a safe, drug and alcohol free atmosphere. These efforts have undoubtedly saved many lives and ensured the continued tradition and wonderful memories of prom season.”

Year after year, more than ninety percent of Broomfield High School students attend JAM. It is a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together to support its young people and give them a night they will remember long after graduation. Community members who would like a glimpse of the magic are encouraged to attend the community walk through that evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to see the incredible transformation before the students arrive.

The Broomfield Community Foundation Heart of Broomfield Awards’ 25th Annual Fundraiser is going to ride off into the sunset this year. The 2026 community celebration is the last rodeo, so tip your hat to the Enduring Heart Lifetime Achievement Awardee and kick up your boots on Thursday, May 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows. This unforgettable evening will honor an extraordinary local family and celebrate more than 145 Heart of Broomfield Award recipients as a powerful tribute to 25 years of community impact.

This will be a thoughtful farewell to the long-standing and cherished community awards program. The final Heart of Broomfield Awards banquet will focus on celebrating our collective legacy. The decision to sunset the program was made with a great deal of care, while reflecting on both the declining number of nominations in recent years and the significant staff capacity required to select and administer the awards. By sunsetting the program, the Broomfield Community Foundation will be able to evolve local programming and create new ways to bring people together for fundraising.

ADVENTHEALTH AVISTA BRINGS ADVANCED OUTPATIENT SURGERY AND ORTHOPEDIC CARE CLOSER TO YOU

Expanded orthopedic services and new leadership reflect a continued commitment to patient care.

Residents of Louisville, Broomfield and nearby communities now have greater access to outpatient surgery and expanded orthopedic care at AdventHealth Avista. After relocating its Outpatient Surgery Center to the Louisville campus in December, the hospital brought more services together in one location, making it easier for patients to get the care they need without traveling far from home. The center offers ophthalmology, gynecology, cosmetic and general surgery, along with expanded orthopedic services to provide more comprehensive care.

Expanded orthopedic care

The launch of the new Orthopedic Surgery Department allows AdventHealth Avista to better serve patients dealing with joint pain, sports injuries, foot and ankle problems and other bone and muscle conditions. In April, Daniel Ocel, MD, joined AdventHealth Avista to lead the program.

Dr. Ocel is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and fellowship-trained in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery. A U.S. Navy veteran, he previously served as the head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Naval Hospital Corpus Christi.

The World Needs More Potlucks

When was the last time you hosted a potluck? Or attended one? Hosting isn’t for everyone, but I promise you when you ask everyone to bring a dish to share it makes the event a communal effort. Everyone has skin in the game. Less stress on you, more fun connecting with others.

If you are feeling disconnected from others and need some community, consider hosting a potluck. And feel free to ask me for any tips and pointers to create a heartfelt gathering. I love hosting easy, low-key vibe gatherings. It’s about being together, not how clean your house is or how perfect the food is.

Here are two EASY potluck dishes that never disappoint. Enjoy!

Chicken Taco Casserole

(You can double this recipe to fit a 9x13 inch pan)

Ingredients

• 2 Cups Cooked Rotisserie Chicken, shredded

• Olive Oil

• ½ Onion, minced

• 1 ½ Cup Chicken Broth

• ¾ Cup Old El Paso Red Enchilada Sauce

• 1 Can Black Beans, drained

• 1 Can Rotel Tomatoes and Chilies

• 1 ½ Cups Long Grain Rice

• 2 Cups Mexican Cheese, shredded

• Optional Toppings: Sour Cream, Sliced Jalapenos, Cilantro, Salsa, Tomatoes

Instructions

Heat the oven to 350°F.

Add a drizzle of oil and cook the onion over medium heat until tender, about 5 minutes.

In an 8x8 inch casserole dish, add the broth, enchilada sauce, onions, shredded chicken, beans, can of tomatoes and rice. Stir to combine.

Bake for 75 minutes or until heated through and the rice is tender. Add cheese on top and continue baking for 15 minutes.

Serve with garnishes!

Sour Cream, Sliced Jalapenos, Cilantro, Salsa, Tomatoes

Creamy Chicken & Rice Casserole

Ingredients

• 2 cups long grain white rice, basmati or jasmine preferred

• 1 medium white onion, diced

• 6 tablespoons salted butter, melted

• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

• 5 cups chicken broth

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

• 5 to 6 chicken thighs, bone in and skin on

• 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Dice 1 medium white onion and melt 6 tablespoons salted butter.

In the prepared baking dish, combine 2 cups long grain white rice, the diced onion, 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, and 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour. Stir until the flour is fully incorporated and no white specks remain. Spread the rice mixture evenly over the bottom of the dish.

Pour in 5 cups chicken broth, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Stir gently to combine.

Place 5 to 6 chicken thighs, skin-side up, evenly over the rice mixture. Brush the chicken thighs with the remaining 3 tablespoons melted butter. Sprinkle the chicken evenly with 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon paprika. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil. Bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the rice is tender, the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, and the skin is crisp and golden. For extra crispy skin, place the dish under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes.

TFree Broomfield Resources Make it Easy to Tackle your Spring Cleaning List

he season of renewal is right around the corner, and with it comes that satisfying urge to declutter and refresh our homes and yards. For Broomfield residents, getting rid of items like bulky furniture, hazardous waste, old electronics, sensitive documents, and yard waste just got a whole lot easier. The best part? It’s free! This spring, take advantage of numerous clean-up initiatives designed to help you dispose of your unwanted items safely and responsibly.

Annual Spring Cleanup is Back!

Say goodbye to those large, non-hazardous items regular trash haulers won't touch. The annual Spring Cleanup is available to all Broomfield residents at no charge and runs across four designated Saturdays between April 18 and May 9 based on your location. An area map and detailed list of accepted items is available at Broomfield.org/SpringCleanup. Items should be placed on the curb by 7 a.m., but no earlier than 24 hours before your neighborhood’s cleanup date. Please separate your items into three piles: one for untreated wood and metal to be recycled, one for waste, and one for clothes and re-usable items to be donated to ARC Thrift Store. The items for ARC should be placed in a separate but visible location and clearly marked “ARC.”

Additionally for 2026, instead of scrapping your gently used bikes, donate them to Ride Broomfield, where volunteers repair and restore them for local residents in need. Schedule your pickup at ridebroomfield.com/bike-donation.

Spring Paper Shred Event: Protect Your Identity

Don’t toss those old tax, medical, or bank records in the recycling bin. Shred them securely! Protecting your personal information is vital and the Spring Paper Shred Event makes it free and convenient.

Residents can shred a maximum of three boxes of paperwork and dispose of up to three 32-gallon trash bags of already-shredded paper. The Spring Paper Shred Event will take place Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Norman Smith Service Center, 3001 W. 124th Ave. No appointment necessary. Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Drop-Off

Keep harmful substances out of landfills and the water supply by properly disposing of hazardous household items (like aerosols, fertilizers, cleaners, and vapes) and old electronics. The free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off for residents is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to noon. Appointments open April 6 and are required for this event. Make your appointment as soon as possible to secure one of the available slots. Drop off location is the Broomfield Municipal Shops located at 3951 W 144th Ave. Yard Waste, Tree Recycling, and Free Mulch

As you prune and clear your yard and garden, don’t throw away your tree trimmings, leaves, and perennial clippings - bring them to the Yard Waste and Tree Branch Recycling Center, located at 2990 W 124th Ave. This resource is open to Broomfield residents with proof of residency. While you’re dropping off trimmings and yard waste, you can stock up on free mulch for your landscape or garden!

Meet Tom Brunner

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet “insert name,” our goal is to introduce Broomfield area change-makers and highlight their contributions.

About Tom Brunner

Tom has lived in Broomfield 69 years and raised his son, Kyle, here. He previously served on the Broomfield City Council, including as Mayor Pro Tem, and has deep family connections to our community. Now retired, his hobbies include visiting friends and family, working out, and traveling.

Q. What did you enjoy most about serving as a city councilmember? We got a tremendous amount of things accomplished. Establishing a robust tax base and forming Broomfield as its own county. The leadership and guidance of the city manager at the time, George DiCiero, on that effort and the shaping of Broomfield cannot be overstated.

Q. Tell us a little about your career path. I retired from Rocky Flats in 2005 after 25 years, I then went on to the Hanford Facility in Washington State for 3.5 years and then the Oak Ridge Facility in Tennessee for 3.5 years. The history behind those facilities is amazing.

Q. What is your connection to the famed Brunner Farmhouse on the northeast corner of Midway and Main? My great-grandfather,

Q. What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield? Great Scotts has good food and a wonderful staff. My favorite park is Broomfield's oldest: Midway. I have many fond memories of all the Broomfield Days celebrations, hanging out as a young adult and even ice skating on the pond.

Q. Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community? A conglomeration of those who created Broomfield. Young men and women, just starting out, many who came here after serving in WWII and Korea. Broomfield was a blank canvas. These families had vision, youthful energy, and the desire to mold a town they could be proud of. They formed service groups, places of worship, clubs, and youth sport groups. There are still a few original home owners in the First Filing, they are in their late 90s and early 100s. Their stories of early Broomfield are fascinating.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being retired? Sans alarm clock, I'm not a guy who is up at the crack of dawn.

Q. What is something you find unique about Broomfield? Certainly being its own county. Also the location, close to Denver and Boulder.

Q. What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield? If you're already here, congratulations, you hit the residence jackpot. Enjoy all that Broomfield and the surrounding area has to offer. If you're looking to relocate, sorry we're full.

Q. Who or what inspires you to be a better person? All the folks I see at the recreation center that have had more birthdays than me. I tell them they're doing circles around all the people sitting on the couch. Staying fit is paramount as we age.

Q. Anything else you’d like to add? Growing up in Broomfield was a wonderful experience. It was as close to Leave it to Beaver as you can get. Fathers went to work, mothers stayed home. Moms met for coffee during the day and the adults would get together in the evenings to play cards. One car, no problem, many of the women did not drive. We walked to school, the surrounding fields were our playgrounds. I still have a number of friends who I went to Emerald grade school with. In fact, I was fortunate to see many of them at our 50th Broomfield High School reunion this past fall.
