If you’re interested in winter activities, Town parks offer wide-ranging recreational opportunities, including snowshoeing and groomed cross-country skiing at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, sledding at the Winter Recreation Area, and winter hiking at Tawasentha Park. If you’re interested in renting snowshoes or cross-country skis, please remember that rentals are only available during weekday hours at the Parks & Recreation Department’s Office. Please call the Parks’ Office at 456-3150 if you have any questions. On Wednesday, December 20th, from 1:00 – 5:00pm, the Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting its annual Centerpiece and Wreath Making Workshop at the Parks & Recreation building. Please visit the Town website for more information or sign up online at www.guilderlandrec.com. Starting January 2, 2018, Tawasentha Park’s three pavilions, including the restored Chalet building, can be reserved for outings and special events at the Parks’ Office. The Western Turnpike Golf Course is offering early bird discounted 2018 memberships until the end of December for residents and non-residents. More information, including a membership application, is available at www. westernturnpike.com/membership. The Town recently added video on demand on the Town website which allows viewers to watch recorded video of Town, Planning, and Zoning Boards meetings as well as special events. The recorded videos will be indexed which will allow a viewer to access video of an agenda item by clicking on the requested item. A selected video is viewed on the Town’s website and does not require the use of You Tube or other third-party channels. Like the website itself, the video adjusts for viewing on smart phones. Recordings of prior meetings will be added to the video library. I want to thank Linda Cure, Public Relations Officer, and Jeff Gregory, Network & Systems Technician, for integrating this latest improvement into the Town’s expanding sources of readily accessible information.

As you may know, the Town has a rapidly expanding sidewalk system and an increasing need for snow removal to keep these vital pedestrian connections open. This difficult work is performed by Parks Department employees with sidewalk plows kept in good working order by Highway Department mechanics. To meet this growing need, the Town recently acquired its fourth sidewalk plow which, as shown in the attached photograph, can also be fitted with a mower attachment to brush cut large open spaces and maintain grass fields in Town Parks and Transfer Station. As with other acquisitions, this used sidewalk plow was purchased at a substantial discount and refitted by the Highway Department. This additional snow plow will allow the Town to have three snow plows in action, with one in reserve, to more quickly clear sidewalks. Please be watchful for sidewalk plows. With inclement weather, poor lighting conditions, noise of the machines, and snow banks, it can be difficult for operators to see you so please help by staying clear of their work area. I would again like to draw your attention to work performed by Town employees that can be overlooked. The Town’s Department of Emergency Medical Services is charged with providing pre-hospital medical care to the sick and injured in the Town of Guilderland, Town of Knox and

Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor surrounding areas in mutual aid situations. Over the past year, the EMS Department responded to 6,227 emergency calls – that’s an average of 17 calls per day. The EMS Department is recognized by its peers as setting the benchmark in the region for providing superior emergency medical services. The EMS Department employs the most advanced medications and procedures that are currently practiced by pre-hospital providers. The Town’s Advanced Life Support System is unique in that it includes a physician’s response to high acute emergencies. Dr. Donald Doynow, the Department’s Medical Director, responds to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, severe trauma, pediatric emergencies and difficult airway calls. With its state of the art equipment, training, medical direction, and oversight, the EMS Department strives to provide optimal care to residents. I want to thank the women and men of the EMS Department for their dedicated service and professionalism. Town offices will be closed on Monday, December 25th and Monday, January 1st. The safety of Town residents and employees is paramount so, if bad weather is anticipated or taking place, please call ahead or check the Town website to make sure that Town offices are open. The Town will also issue updates on closings and weather impacts on Town services by using Nixle, a free text and email service. Thank you for taking the time to read these notes. Well-seasoned travelers will hasten to add that having the final destination and route in mind also contribute to a journey’s success. Individuals and couples would be well-advised to take the first step on their financial journey - enter the Financial Plan! IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR (OR IS IT?) by Margaret C. Tabak

Guilderland, NY - Each year around this time Courts are inundated with parents bringing proceedings as to how to divide the holidays. Under the best of circumstances, holidays create stress; people are busy, there are financial issues and, especially with a recent separation, many painful emotional issues. In order to save yourself, your children, and your family a lot of money and aggravation, take these suggestions to heart: 1. Have a Schedule- If you have not already established an agreement in a divorce or custody proceeding, then make a schedule. It doesn’t need to be a schedule you especially like, but any rule is better than none. Make the schedule far in advance. This way if you have a problem your attorney has the time to help you. 2. Honor Your Agreement or Court Order- If you have gone through the time, trouble and money to have a schedule, then abide by it. The other parent and your children are expecting that the children will spend certain time with each parent, don’t start dancing around at the last minute and throw everyone off. This includes showing up late, or exchanging children who are exhausted or overdosing on sugar. 3. Share the Holiday List- If your children have put together a wish list, go over it together and figure out who is getting what. Consider buying one or two things that are from both parents. This will show the children that you are a family, even if you don’t live together. 4. Keep your Extended Family Quiet- Everyone has one (or more) friends or relatives who have overinvolved themselves in your business and enjoy nothing more than bad mouthing the other parent. This puts your children in a terrible situation, and they may choose not to spend holiday time with you again. Further, most Orders and Agreements contain non-disparagement clauses. Don’t face a court proceeding because someone in your family cannot be muzzled. 5. Honor Customs- If one parent’s family always does Christmas Eve and one Christmas Day- why not keep up the tradition? This allows children to spend time with extended family and easily divides up the time. Similarly, if attendance at a religious service for the holiday was a practice in the past, then keep that practice. Friends and relatives can join you, and it allows your family, no matter what form it takes, to continue its own tradition. The caveat to this is: the children and parents need to sit together. It is unfair for a parent to claim ownership of the children so that the other parent is relegated to the other side of the room, wishing Merry Christmas to his/her children by waving. 6. Remember the Spirit of the Season- Do something for others- collect toys for children in need, help out at a holiday meal, etc. Don’t let your children’s memories be filled with family squabbles.

An “Interview” With A Student I was speaking with a student the other day and they mentioned that they have noticed the benefits of training in Taekwondo even though they had been back at training for a short time. We chatted and I asked questions so that I started to feel like a reporter on an interview, though I am nothing of the sort. Since the holiday season is underway and we draw nearer to the New Year that may bring resolutions including exercise, I thought I would write my version of the “interview” that took place. As usual, I will protect the identity of my students and call this student Taylor, a name that does not identify any of my current students, and is not specific to gender. Taylor: I went for a jog yesterday for the first time in almost a month, and I noticed that it was easier than I thought. I think taekwondo made my legs stronger. I didn’t lose anything. Me: Didn’t lose anything? So you used to run a lot? Taylor: Yeah, like three times a week. But lately I’ve been a little busy. But now, even though I hadn’t run since my last 5k, it felt easier. Me: A 5k? So you are a competitive runner? Taylor: No, not really, but I have run in quite a few 5k races and I did the Spartan Race once. Me: What? That’s a crazy race, that’s amazing that you did that! (readers: If you don’t know about the Spartan race, you should look it up!) Taylor: Well, it was quite difficult, but very rewarding. I enjoy exercise so much and now that I’m training in Taekwondo, it has made all of the exercise I do much easier, and my hip pain is gone! Also I can achieve even more. You know what else? I have lost 8 pounds as well. Me: Wow that’s awesome! Let’s pause here for me to tell you that this conversation really happened, that I am not fabricating any of it; on my honor as a sixth degree blackbelt. Some of the terms used may be mine however, since I am writing it after the conversation took place as I did not take any notes. Taylor: And I am much more flexible too! (Taylor demonstrated for me.) Me: Well I am really happy for you! What do you like best about Taekwondo? Taylor: I like the mental challenge of remembering and performing the forms and I like to kick. I think that the kicking really helped me improve my strength and flexibility, though I will say that the performance of the stances in the forms improves my strength as well. I also love the application of kicking to break boards and self defense. Me: Well Taylor you really made my day. Thanks and keep up the good work. I have had many students over the years explain how Taekwondo has helped them in school, work and other sports (the cross training benefits are significant). Many comments expound upon a topic I endear, character. This time however, was very special for me because the focus was on the physical benefits experienced by a very happy student. As with any sport or exercise, in Taekwondo, you get out what you put in, and Taylor puts in a lot to get these results! If you are looking for something new for the new year, perhaps to do with your family or to complement your other exercise pursuits, Taekwondo may be a good fit. The character development and physical benefits are real and you can experience them too! I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and the best New Year ever!!!

Holiday Greetings from the Guilderland Public Library! In this season of giving, we are engaged in several charitable efforts which we would like to tell you about: ·

Books for USVI Kids: First, we are collecting books and money for kids affected by the hurricanes in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drop off books for children ages birth to 18, and we will ship them to a distribution center in the Virgin Islands where they will be distributed to kids. We’ve been at this for a couple of weeks now, and thank you for your generosity, while also explaining that we need monetary donations to cover the cost of shipping—we can’t spend public funds on that purpose, so our ability to ship books is limited to how much money we collect. There is a drop jar on the Circulation Desk. Thanks for helping these kids out! Most of the libraries – and many homes! -- were wrecked in the hurricanes, so having something to read will be greatly appreciated. The book and shipping drive will continue until Saturday, December 30. (We are closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.)

Toys for Tots: We are again a drop-off site for the Toys for Tots campaign. There are two collection boxes in our lobby. Clean, unwrapped new toys are greatly appreciated by kids and families in need! Final pick-up day is Monday, December 18.

Cell Phone for Soldiers: Trying to surpass the marvelous donations we had last year, we are participating in the Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign sponsored by Senator George Amedore. There is a drop box near the Circulation Desk where you can drop off old cell phones, tablets, chargers, cords, and related equipment. Why would a soldier want your old, non-working flip phone, with the cracked screen? Actually, they’re not going to use the phone. CPFS is actually a kind of recycling drive. The phones are disassembled and various precious metals and substances are harvested for recycling. When this material is sold, the proceeds are used to buy gift cards for calling-cards for soldiers stationed abroad. Since the program was founded by two teenagers in 2004, more than 300 million minutes of free calls have been given to service members. Cell phones will also be accepted through December 30.

Also, we are excited to announce our participation in the Inaugural Winter Reading Challenge. As part of a nationwide effort with more than 100 libraries participating, we are challenging our patrons to collectively read 300 books 9or more!) and to log them on our Beanstack site: guilpl.beanstack.org. If we reach the nationwide goal of 55,000 books, “Shark Tank” investor Mark Cuban will donate $25,000 to “First Book,” an organization which provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need! #WinterRead2018. Guilderland Police Department Raises Money For Cancer Awareness As the month of November draws to a close, members of the Guilderland Police are pictured with a $1000.00 donation check to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Thirteen members of the Guilderland Police Department participated in NO SHAVE NOVEMBER with the approval of Chief Carol Lawlor. No Shave November is a month-long journey during which participants forgo shaving and grooming in order to invoke conversation and raise cancer awareness. The members donated $500 of their own money and the police officers union, the Guilderland Police Benevolent Association, matched their efforts to raise $1000.00 to be donated to St. Jude's.

THE ART OF FINDING JOY By:Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Guilderland, NY - ‘Tis the season for spreading joy, feeling joyful, singing “Joy to the World”, but do we really know what “joy” is or what it feels like? Do you surround yourself with people and items that bring you joy? I’m going to share my journey about how I have learned to appreciate having a little more joy in my life. A few years ago, I was walking through Target past the book isle. I saw this tiny book out of the corner of my eye and immediately felt like I was supposed to have this book. I’m sure most of you have had this happen to you while visiting Target - before you know it your cart is filled with random stuff. Anyway, the book is called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. Why on earth would I have this strong intuition that I should read a book about how to basically clean my house? I thought I was doing a pretty good job - haha. The book describes this entire process of how to declutter, tidy, and organize everything in your home. She even goes into detail describing how to fold your clothes so your “clothes are happily resting in their drawers” and not a jumbled pile of socks. My initial thought was that this woman was OCD about organizing. But there was one phrase from the book that stuck in my head – “Does this thing/item bring you joy?” If the answer is no, then get rid of it. Again feeling like this was some sort of calling, I set out to “KonMarie” my house (that is what she calls her method of madness). I started with my clothes, getting rid of any item that “did not bring me joy.” You are supposed to thank these items for the good times you had together and wish them well to the next owner. It felt a little like a good ole’ fashion break-up. But WOW did it feel good to get rid of all that stuff. It took me about a week to get through EVERY SINGLE CLOTHING ITEM and fold it the “KonMarie Way”. At this point, my husband thought I had lost my mind - haha. I said to him “Watch out Mister, your stuff is next!” So over the course of the next two months, I went through my entire house paying homage to the items that once brought me joy but now need a new home. I went through my husband’s clothes (don’t tell him I donated his old blue cashmere sweater he had for 20 years and never wore). Then onto the kid’s rooms and clothes, every closet, books, kitchen cabinets, old household items, and I got rid of a lot of wicker baskets. I’ve discovered they just collect junk I don’t need. I can’t tell you how good it feels to get rid of the stuff in your house that is weighing you down. Now it is a big joke in our house that clothes need to be folded the “KonMarie Way” - and my husband still thinks I’m nuts. :) So what does this have to do with finding joy? After going through this process, I began to look at other aspect of my life and ask the question, “Does ____ bring me joy?” The main area I was struggling with was exercise and running. I had always loved playing sports and running. In my 20’s, I could run 10 miles like nothing then spend the rest of the day playing volleyball on the beach. After I had children, I always struggled getting back into running. My body didn’t like it as much and it always seemed like a chore to push myself to run. But then I finally asked myself, “Does running bring me joy?” and the answer was … no. So why am I forcing myself to do an exercise that is internally making me miserable? I did enjoy running at one point in my life but not currently. What I actually discovered about myself is that I love to play sports, not just to run down the road for an hour. So I started to play basketball again once a week with some amazing women. We have so much fun and I’m actually running for about 90 minutes. By the end I’m completely exhausted and dripping wet. It is the best workout I’ve had in years. Playing basketball truly brings me joy. So as you float though the madness of December, try to take a few moments to reflect on what truly brings you joy. If you like to set New Year’s Resolutions, this is a great place to start. Discover what makes your soul happy. This simple little book has changed my life. No matter how bad a day is, I can always go home, open my sock drawer and smirk at how immaculately folded my socks are and it makes me laugh. At least the socks are happy! Chief Carol J. Lawlor announces that the Guilderland Police Department has enhanced it’s Take Me Home Program by issuing identification cards to those individuals that are registered with our program. The Take Me Home Program was launched in Guilderland in 2013 and is designed to assist law enforcement in the event a person (with a non-verbal disability, or a person subject to disorientation) is located (often before being reported as missing). A parent or guardian would have previously enrolled this person and entered descriptive information and photographs into our Take Me Home database. A located person matching this type of disability would be checked against the database. Now, everyone enrolled in our program will receive an ID card that will have emergency information on it and instructions to contact the Guilderland Police Department. Chief Lawlor said “by issuing these ID Cards, a person with a non verbal disability or a person that is disoriented will be able to communicate his or her name and some other important information that can really assist the police understand the individual they may encounter, and if the person is disoriented or wandered away from their caregiver, police will be better able to assist the person is getting back home”.
