parks are the sites of exciting lacrosse, soccer, flag football, softball,

baseball, and even cricket games. Please take the time to catch a game and enjoy the park system’s latest improvements, including Tawasentha Park’s pool house, with private showers and changing rooms, lockers,

This summer, the Town’s engineers are surveying and designing the new sidewalk on Western Avenue which will connect Regency Park

and Hamilton Square to the Guilderland Library, with a crosswalk to

Guilderland Elementary School and access to the YMCA. Construction

should take place next year. On August 20th at 6:30pm, the Guilderland

Library is hosting an informational session about this exciting project which was only possible because of a $680,000 grant secured by the Town.

Later this year, the Town will request engineering proposals

for a new sidewalk on West Old State Road which will link residential neighborhoods with Lynnwood Elementary School.

project was funded by a $297,000 grant awarded to the Town. Construction should occur in the summer of 2019.

Guilderland Police Department Community Services Unit will sponsor National Night Out, an annual program where residents can

meet first responders to talk about their work to prevent and reduce

crime, and inspect equipment and vehicles. The event has free ice cream, children’s rides, petting zoo and other attractions. The Police Department estimates that the event draws an estimated 4,000 people each year.

I am also excited to announce that the Town recently added Kenneth Kovalchik as Town Planner. Ken is a professionally certified planner

with 15 years of planning experience, including the past five years as the Town of Bethlehem’s Senior Planner where he worked on subdivisions,

planned unit developments, renewable energy initiatives, and other land use planning projects.

Do You Know Where Your Money Went? by

Guilderland, NY - One of the key components of personal financial planning is an understanding of where your money goes each day, week, month, and year. Developing a personal cash flow analysis can be a very enlightening exercise, and potentially the starting point on the road to good financial health. There are several ways to begin creating a personal cash flow analysis. The “old-fashioned” way involves manually tracking every dollar and cent which you (and your family) spend on any item – ranging from a bagel and coffee purchase, mortgage/rent payment to your utility bills. Although requiring the most effort, this method often provides the most accurate and useful results. You are not only tracking checks and credit card purchases, but also those small cash purchases that can add up over time. Be sure to also include purchases which may not recur monthly, such as insurance premiums, property taxes, vacation expenses, etc. Once you have tracked your outflows for at least a month or two, you can begin to allocate purchases to categories and learn where your money is going. More modern methods of tracking spending include the use of Personal Finance software, such as Quicken, or via websites such as Mint.com. Both of these can link to your financial accounts (bank, credit cards, etc.) in order to easily assemble and categorize data.

Once you see where your “take-home” income goes, you can also start to add other items to your personal cash flow statement. These items include savings (such as 401k or other employer-sponsored retirement plans, savings accounts, individual retirement accounts, etc.), FICA taxes, and income taxes. Finally, you can add a row for “inflows”, i.e. the gross income coming in the door from employment, pensions, social security, etc. Ideally, you would like to see that your “inflows” are equal to or greater than your “outflows”, indicating that you living within or below your means. Developing a current cash flow analysis can help you uncover ways to save more money on a regular basis towards future goals, or pay down accumulated debt. The statement can also be helpful in analyzing the impacts of any strategies under consideration, such as saving more money in a retirement plan, or re-financing a mortgage, or taking on any new expenses such as a vehicle purchase or planned vacation. Getting one’s financial house in order starts with the basics. Creating a personal cash flow analysis is an excellent first step in the process. Blackbelt Success and Achievement By Master Rice

Guilderland, NY - The best part about modern sport Taekwondo is that it can be practiced and performed at the level desired by the student. Anyone can participate in Taekwondo. Literally anyone, because the sport is designed for personal achievement. The process of Taekwondo learning contains all of the elements desired in education: inherent motivation system for success, individualized pacing, and personal achievement standards. In other words, Taekwondo is both the same and different for everyone. Some students begin at 4 years old, some at 70. Some take 4 years to achieve blackbelt, some take 20 years. Some students participate for the fun and the holistic activity, while others compete at the National Championships. This year we had a Rice family trip to Nationals in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Rice and I performed admirably and Mete won a silver medal for board breaking! We also have a few dozen other students who will compete locally this month in Albany, while many others are just enjoying summer camp or the daily fun training. Taekwondo is about the student; the person and the character they are. It is more about the progress they can make, than any particular ability. At our recent blackbelt tea we had the honor of watching 9 blackbelts receive their next level belt. Each is a different age, each has different abilities, each has achieved goals to their level, and each has different outstanding character. Taekwondo is about them. Congratulations Mete on your achievement of a National silver medal and congratulations Mrs. Rice on your first Nationals! Congratulations to our new blackbelts! Q. What year did your business start? We’ve been called The UPS Store since 2003 but the store actually opened in 1989 under our original name of Mail Boxes Etc. We’re at 1971 Western Avenue in Guilderland, right next to Hewitt’s Garden Center. I think we are the oldest business in the plaza now. Q. What hours are you open? We’re open 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. We do, however, have 24 hour access for Mailbox holders, 24 hour Fax receiving service, and you can place orders through our website 24 hours a day as well. Q. What are the advantages of renting a Mailbox with you vs a PO Box? Where do I start? First, we offer a real street address, so you can receive deliveries from any carrier, UPS, FedEx, DHL and the Post Office whereas most post offices only let you receive regular mail, no UPS etc. Then all the other conveniences, 24-hour access available, email notifications when you receive a package, call-in Mailcheck service. For small businesses the biggest benefit is that they don’t have to give their home address out to all their customers and the street address looks more professional than a PO Box. For our residential customers the most important aspect has been the security of safe mail receiving along with knowing their packages won’t be left outside in the snow or rain or vulnerable to porch pirates. Q. Is it less expensive to print color copies with you or from my home printer? It is usually less expensive for us to print for you. The print yields you find on the ink cartridges for your home printer can be a little misleading. They usually refer to a very small amount of coverage, like a double spaced essay or something. Once you get into printing docs with photos or graphics you are looking at up to 60 cents page on many home printers. The highest you’ll pay here is 49 cents on premium paper and the price drops the higher your volume.

Q. What is Every Door Direct Mail? EDDM is a great way for businesses to mail out advertising material without having to buy a mailing list or get a bulk rate permit and it’s a fraction the cost of first class mailing or even post card mailing. We can handle the entire process right here. First we design the mailing piece then you pick out postal delivery routes right on an interactive map. As you click on the road/route you see how many homes and businesses they have, and your shopping cart updates the printing and mailing cost as you go along. It even shows you the average income on that route. That’s about as much work as my customer has to put into it and we walk you through that anyway. We take care of the rest, from uploading files, bundling mail pieces, labeling the bundles, delivering to the appropriate post offices, etc. We’ve taken what many small businesses saw as a little daunting and boiled it down to two steps. Q. Any advice for new businesses starting up? I would say to get involved in the community. Support a charity. Sponsor a team. Join the Chamber of Commerce, go to the mixers and events. The more people you meet and talk to the better. And don’t forget about The UPS Store. We are the perfect first stop for new businesses. I would like the community to know that despite being a franchise my store is truly local. Guilderland, NY - As children grow in the womb and after birth their jaws develop along with their entire skull and the muscles of their face, head, and neck. Everything links together as it grows. So what affects the muscles affects the jaws, neck, and head as well. During development, form follows function. In the case of developing faces, noses, and jaws, the way the muscles of the mouth and face are used,help create the shape of the jaws and face. The stress of using the muscles causes bone to be deposited along the sutures of the bones, which lengthens and widens the jaws and cheekbones. Ideally, jaws should be wide and U-shaped. In recent decades, though, because of the various epigenetic effects discussed previously, our jaws have become smaller, crowding the space for our teeth so they become crooked. Jaws often develop over bites or are pushed backwards and even open-mouthed slack jaws result. Today, it is common to see V-shaped jaws that create a high narrow palate and obstructed nasal passages. The reason that optimal facial formation consists of wide, U-shaped Jaws is that it leads to a better bite as well as a wide enough nose to create open nasal passages that promote nasal breathing, and a tongue that has plenty of room to rest in the mouth. As we look at the faces of children today, we see many children mouth breathing with slack-jaws, puffed out lips that lack muscle tone, and cheeks that melt directly into the neck but no prominent cheekbone definition. Such facial slackness is partly due to lack of muscle tone, or hypotonia. Remember, these facial characteristics are not genetic; they are epigenetic changes, influenced by a variety of environmental factors. Some factors that contribute to poor facial development are: Bottlefeeding , weaning to soft foods, thumbsucking, pacifier use and mouth breathing. The good news is that proper orofacial development can begin at birth, and unhealthy orofacial development can be treated beginning at birth. It’s important to pay attention early to your child breathing and sleep. Be vigilant. Snoring and mouth breathing are the most obvious early signs of trouble. Recognition of problems in early intervention can prevent lifelong health challenges. Be the coach for your child’s health and don’t give up. Guilderland, NY - “Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet.”1 How do you keep them attached when a family separates? From Cain and Abel to the Jonas Brothers, your siblings are the closest people in the world to you. They are with you from cradle to grave, and everything in between. Courts will strain to keep the siblings together. The general philosophy is that in times of disruption, siblings provide stability and comfort to each other. However, not each child in a family has the same needs, wants, or wishes. Often, based on gender, age, or simply personality, Suzie may seek to live primarily with her father, while her brother Joey may want to live with their mother. In these situations, a court will appoint an attorney [for the Child] for each child (or groups of children) as the siblings may have different interests from each other. A decision can be made which separates children from each other, while still providing some overlap. For example, even if children live primarily with different parents they may all spend their weekends together, alternating the parents. Another situation that arises is children who are half siblings and share one parent in common. For example if there is one dad and three moms, each child will spend time with his mom, but may be brought together so that they all spend overlapping time with their dad.

A different and thornier issue is in regard to step-siblings. These children have no biological or legal relationship with each other, but may have grown up together and for all intent purposes, are true siblings. However, the law does not provide a remedy to continue their relationship. It is important for parents to keep in mind that if they have created relationships between their children, those connections should not be automatically severed if the relationship between the parents goes sour. For the child, a “soul” sister is no different than one related by blood or law. If a sibling is not granted access to his sibling, an action (lawsuit) can be brought to compel visitation2. If the sibling who is seeking visitation is a minor, an action can be brought on his behalf. While these cases do not occur often, it is a tool that can be utilized if a parent or guardian is cutting off access. These situations tend to arise when there is a significant age difference between children, or they are half siblings and the second family is no longer intact, and the step parent thwarts contact. If you are separating siblings, can each household provide the same financial advantages? Is this rectified by a support order? Simply saying “we’ll ‘split’ the children and call it a day [for support]” may not necessarily be in the child’s best interests. It is important to remember that each child is unique, and custodial arrangements need to reflect the best interests of each child in the family. 1 2

From the Library Director: Where the Sidewalk Ends: Come to an update from Guilderland Town Supervisor Peter Barber Come to the Library on Monday, August 20 at 6:30 pm for a presentation by Town Supervisor Peter Barber who will update you on several matters of interest to library users and town residents. Primarily, he would like to address the plan to build sidewalks on the south side of Western Avenue from SEFCU to the library. He will also address the status of Mercy Care Lane, which will soon reopen clear through from Western Avenue to Winding Brook Drive. This means that if you exit the Library and want to go west on Western Avenue, you will be able to turn left down Mercy Care Lane, make a left on Winding Brook Drive, and then turn left onto Western Avenue protected by the traffic light. No more high-anxiety lefts from Mercy Care Lane onto traffic-choked Western Avenue.

GUILDERLAND RECREATIONAL SOCCER PROGRAM (GRSP) FALL 2018 SEASON REGISTRATION FOR THE FALL 2018 SOCCER SEASON IS OPEN. Teams will be offered to players from ages 3-15 (players 16-adult, please see the adult page link on our website.) All games for pre-k thru the open division will be on SATURDAY’S starting at 9:30am. The Fall Season will begin on September 17th, 2018 and will end on October 27th, 2018, with regular games for pre-k through 2nd grade and the open division and a tournament for grades 3/4 & 5/ 6.

FSBOs earn an average of $60,000 to $90,000 less on the sale of their home than sellers who work with a real estate agent, according to the National Association of REALTORS®. Here’s the breakdown: ·

All FSBO homes: $190,000

FSBO homes when buyer knew seller: $160,300

With this kind of discrepancy, why would any seller choose to go it alone? Some may want to avoid paying an agent’s commission—but even factoring that in, FSBOs still stand to make less on their home sale. “Talk to an agent and find out what they suggest for the commission, and then do the math yourself,” researchers write on NAR’s Economists’ Outlook blog. “The closing price for the agent-assisted seller is likely going to be way above a FSBO. [But] in reality, homes sold by the owner make less money overall.” Homeowners seem to be hearing the message: Only 8 percent of sellers last year—an all-time low—chose to sell their home themselves, according to NAR’s 2017 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. That figure has been falling since 2004, when 14 percent of homeowners sold their own homes.
