ell, this surely has been a “summery� summer, hasn’t it? There has been enough heat and humidity lately that I want to remind our residents to be careful of overexertion, and to remember to stay well-hydrated on the hot and humid days that have been so plentiful of late. I urge everyone to pay special attention to our young children and our elderly in weather like this. A visit or a call to check in on some of our more fragile residents at this time of year is a neighborly gesture.
I encourage all our residents to make use of Guilderland’s park facilities during summertime. We have a lot of different things for people to do in our extensive network. You could choose to walk to the playground areas in one of our neighborhood-scale pocket parks, or take a longer hike on the 5-mile trail network in Tawasentha Park and the Winter Recreation Area. If there’s a dog in your household, you and your pet might enjoy a visit to the dog park at Nott Road Park. A visit to Tawasentha Park offers the opportunity for picnicking, basketball, tennis, or softball, along with a visit to the Town Pool for a swim. We still have a few Thursday evening concerts coming up in August at the Guilderland Performing Arts Center as well. I hope that many of you will take advantage of the recreational opportunities these facilities offer.

any of us know or have at least heard of the Rodino Family over the past three years since the tragic passing of 8 year old Rachel from the juvenile form of Huntington’s Disease, the neurological disease that causes degeneration of the body and mind that currently has no cure. Once again, the family and their friends are trying to stay positive as now their 18 year old daughter, Gianna, a recent graduate of Guilderland High School, has been diagnosed with the juvenile form of Huntington’s Disease, as well. This newest diagnosis follows that of her brother, Anthony, last year, who also has the juvenile form and father, Rick, who has been disabled by the disease over the past few years. Gianna’s mom, Lori, has been and will continue to attempt to keep the family in their home, as mortgage payments become more difficult to meet with accumulating bills, while she takes care of her family and supports them around the clock. The continuous heartbreak seems unbearable, yet the Rodinos refuse to give up. It is this outlook on life that rings with strength, perseverance, and ultimately hope that has impacted my own life. Like many, when I first heard the story of Rachel three years ago, my heart broke for the family. I have since had Gianna as a student in class and have learned through her and her family, that even when faced with horrible tragedy, smiles and laughter can still be part of your life. The inner strength that rings through the entire family has motivated me to not only get involved with fundraising for the family, but also to always keep a positive outlook, no matter what trials may come my way. Maybe it is the Rodino’s story that could serve as a spark to help spur Huntington’s awareness and research, bringing about a cure in time to save Gianna, Anthony, and Rick. Lori believes it and so do I‌.but this cannot be achieved by sitting by and continuing life as normal. Many of you also know and love the family and have rallied behind them for almost 3 years. Still, we need to do more. At the current time, upcoming events that will help the Rodinos, while also benefiting the community, are being planned. More information will become available as soon as more specific plans are made. Outdoor butterfly lights, in a way to memorialize Rachel, will be sold at all events and at the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce for the rest of the summer and fall. For now, we need people to help keep this family’s hope and faith alive by doing what communities do best: coming together when times are tough and doing for each other what we would hope would be done for us in a challenging situation. ummer 2012 is moving quickly, and the historical Altamont Fair is now just around the corner! The 119th edition of the annual event representing Albany, Schenectady and Greene counties will take place Aug. 14 though Aug. 19. The price of admission is $15 ($14 if bought online) for all fairgoers 36” and taller. Admission includes all rides, shows, exhibits, Circus Hollywood and parking. The fair is geared toward boys, girls, men and women of all ages looking to spend a day in the sun with their family and friends. No matter what you like to do, whether it is hop onto the carnival rides, participate in contests, visit the various vendors or learn from the history-rich exhibits, a day spent at the fair is the perfect getaway from your workday routine and everyday errands. This year, the Altamont Fair will feature live music from local bands playing everything from country music and rock to the oldies. The famous Circus Hollywood, sponsored by National Grid, will be at the fair entertaining visitors everyday, and there are plenty of activities for all fairgoers to participate in, such as Miss Altamont Fair, the Ugliest Cake Contest and the opportunity to learn about sustainable living.
The Altamont Fair provides a number of familyfriendly shows. For animal lovers, there is the Two by Two Zoo, which educates children about animals, a petting zoo and Disc-Connected K9s, the world famous Frisbee dogs. For those interested in magic tricks, Sylvia’s Magic Trunk provides spectacular entertainment, and for families looking for a laugh, they should see Vic and Sticks, the musical comedy group that allows kids to participate in its shows.
The 2012 event focuses on sustainable living with a new green initiative. The County Waste-sponsored “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” competition will feature the illustrations of green living by children as a method of reinforcing the importance of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Schenectady Children’s Museum and the Pine Bush Preserve have joined with the Altamont Fair to illustrate the importance of sustainable living. Speakers scheduled include Diana Dumesnil Senior Day will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, this year. Sponsored by St. Peter’s Health Services, seniors 65 and over receive free admission until 4:00 p.m. Senior Day includes plenty of exhibits from senior-serving agencies. Presentations throughout the day will provide valuable information to our senior guests, including special presentations about senior scams for which to watch out. Chauffeured golf carts will be made available to patrons in need of transportation assistance around the fair grounds. Armed Services Day follows Senior Day, occurring Thursday, Aug. 16. On Armed Services Day, all active and retired members of the military will be admitted free of charge until 4 p.m. (free admission does not include rides). Armed Services Day events include a World War II radio re-enactment as well as exhibits of military vehicles. Budweiser and Saratoga Eagle will be raising funds to benefit VA Homeless Veterans Programs in the Capital Region, and to cap off a great day, the US Army Color guard will lead off a flag-raising ceremony followed by an amazing Alonzo Fireworks display, sponsored by Quick Response Restoration. The Altamont Fair focuses on agriculture, and as the surrounding agricultural community shrinks more and more each year as housing developments grow, the Altamont Fair has become the showcase for agricultural traditions and the importance of keeping them alive in the 21st century.
Roots from the fair trace back as far as 1819, when The Albany Agricultural Society sponsored an event titled the “Agricultural Jubilee” in Bethlehem and Slingerlands. In 1892, the society settled on Altamont as a permanent location for the fair. In 1893, horse racing kicked off the first Altamont Fair. The Fine Arts and Applied Science Building, the oldest building on the fairgrounds, was constructed for the first event. Admission was just a quarter, and net receipts for the inaugural threeday event equaled $884.13. During the inaugural event, fairgoers were extremely interested in the latest farming machinery, as use of steel tools was on the rise. Weaving machines were also popular it was common for households to make their own clothes. Finally, a gardening display showcasing a diversity of new seeds for planting was of interest to a population growing due to the continuing rise of European immigrants.

MANAGING INFLAMMATION NATURALLY By Dr. Kim Keeling
I
would like to start off to say thank you to the community and patients for such a warm welcome to the Spinal Wellness Center. It has been a very busy couple of months with the transition but we have settled in smoothly. It has been such a pleasure meeting so many new patients who have been filling me in about all the local hot spots and sights to see. Hopefully over time I can get to them all but for now I’ll be busy in the clinic. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve stayed awake thinking of what I should write for my first article. Back injuries, headaches, sports injuries, ankle sprains, sports nutrition, how to pick out running shoes, taping techniques, picking pillows and mattresses and the list goes on and on. I couldn’t take another sleepless night so I left it up to the patients to decide. The final vote left me writing about natural ways to manage inflammation. I hope you enjoy this article and find some useful information. When most people think of inflammation they may think of a time when an injury occurred and the body reacted by causing redness, swelling, decreased motion and pain. Inflammation can be an acute reaction or a chronic ongoing daily battle of sleepless nights and painful joints. Excessive inflammation can become systemic, affect every cell in the body and negatively impact your health. Cardiovascular disease, allergies, asthma, fibromyalgia, auto-immune disease like rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis are characterized by chronic inflammation. Inflammation is caused by the immune system reacting to a stimulus. It could be a twisted ankle or years of wear and tear. Regardless, there are a few things you can do to speed up recovery. I like to incorporate nature’s best medicine: FOOD. First let’s look at foods that can cause inflammation. Of course these are going to be all the foods that we love. Refined sugar found in candy, chocolate, desserts, soda and white flour. Trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils) are fats that the body cannot easily recognize or breakdown. These are found in almost all packaged food products. Alcohol, artificial sweeteners, high fat dairy and red meat are also big culprits that can cause systemic inflammation. Ok, so what is left to eat? The answer is real food. Often when a patient comes in with an acute injury, I will make recommendations to follow an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan for one week. It may seem drastic for some individuals; however, in reality it is how we should eat on a daily basis anyway. You would be amazed how your body heals quicker without having to process all the heavy fatty and sugary foods. The daily plan is as follows: 5-7 servings of vegetables, 2- 3 serving of fruit, 3.5 ounces of cooked protein (turkey or chicken with skin removed, Mahi Mahi, Pacific Mackerel, Pink Salmon, Pacific Cod). Avoid red meat for one week. Include 1-2 servings of legumes (peas, hummus, bean soup), 1-2 servings of low-fat or nonfat dairy, 1-3 servings of whole grain bread or pasta, brown rice, whole oats and 1 serving of nuts/seeds. Fluid intake should be ½ your body weight in ounces. For example, a 100 pound person needs 50 ounces of fluid per day. Acceptable beverages include water, decaffeinated herbal tea or coffee, mineral water, club soda or seltzer. Condiments such cinnamon, carob, mustard, horseradish, vinegar, lemon, lime, herbs/spices, stevia, may be used as desired. No refined sugar or artificial sweeteners are allowed. The Health of Your Mouth Impacts the Health of Your Body Your mouth is an integral part of your entire body, and an infection there puts the rest of your body at risk. It’s not entirely known whether it’s the bacteria, the inflammation, or a combination of factors that make gum disease so serious for your overall health. Recent research shows that gum disease plays a negative role in the following health conditions: • Heart disease: Gum disease is associated with atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart attack and heart disease. • Diabetes: Inflammation that starts in the mouth seems to weaken the body’s ability to control blood sugar. One study found treating a woman’s gum disease decreased chances of premature birth by nearly 50 percent. • Lung health and respiratory diseases: Bacteria in your mouth from gum disease can be inhaled into your lungs, causing respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). • Osteoporosis: Gum disease increases your risk of developing osteoporosis. One thing is clear: the health of the body and mouth are interconnected. Your body can affect the health of your mouth and likewise, your mouth can affect the health of your body. Taking good care of your teeth and gums can really help you live well longer. This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and going for regular dental cleanings and check-ups.

Prenuptial Agreement - A Tool For Planning Your Financial Life Together You are in love and about to be married. As you think about your future together perhaps you envision owning a home, starting a family, and (eventually) retirement. It is an exciting time with many things going on at once. While many people often think about the emotional aspects of marriage, often times they fail to consider that marriage is a financial partnership. Over the course of your marriage you will make many financial decisions with your spouse. While you are planning for your wedding day, you should also consider using a prenuptial agreement to plan for your future together. The problem with prenuptial agreements is people tend to only talk about them within the context of a divorce. And usually only when there is a lot of money involved. The media buzz about the divorce of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise is a recent example. As a result, people tend to form a conclusion that creating a prenuptial agreement presumes you will be divorced or that they are only necessary if there is significant money involved. This conclusion is not accurate. As a wise colleague once said to me, “You don’t put Fix-a-Flat in your trunk because you presume you will get a flat tire on the way to the store.” A prenuptial agreement should be viewed as a tool to help you plan your financial life together as a married couple in addition to providing a level of security if (not when!) you and your spouse decide to part ways. Prenuptial agreements offer a myriad of benefits. Here are a few: 1. An Understanding of the Financial Picture: In order for a prenuptial agreement to be properly prepared, each party must share information about his/her finances (such as income, assets, and debts). Sharing this information will help each party understand more about each other and communicate about future financial matters. Often times this will help strengthen the relationship between the parties. 2. Future Planning: The beginning of the marriage is the best time to address expectations for both individuals and the plans you both have for the future. For example, will both spouses work during the marriage? If one spouse plans to stay home to care for children, then the agreement should discuss how the family will be financially supported. 3. Handling Debts: People may have debt when they enter into a marriage. For example, with the rising cost of higher education it is not uncommon anymore for two young people to have student loans in the six-figures. A prenuptial agreement can address how these and other debts will be paid during the marriage or upon a divorce. 4. Protection of Current Assets: Pre-nuptial agreements can be used to ensure that separate property (e.g. property you owned prior to your marriage) remains the separate property of the person that owns it. 5. Estate Planning: New York State law does not allow one spouse to disinherit the other (this law is known as the Elective Share Statute). However, each party to a prenuptial agreement can waive the application of that law, so that in the event of your passing you will be able to distribute your assets according to your wishes. This is often extremely important to someone who is remarrying and has children and/or support obligations from a prior marriage.

Q. How many books have you written? Which is your favorite? A. I’ve written three and they are all thrillers. My first was Shadows and Deceptions followed by Triangle of Stars and my latest is The Bear Hunter. As to which is my favorite, that’s a tough one. I’m partial to Shadows and Deceptions because it was my first, but I think The Bear Hunter is my best. Triangle of Stars is pretty good too!
Q. How and why did you start writing? A. I always enjoyed reading stories and writing papers in college. One day I decided to take a course in writing to see if I had what it took to write a short story. Well the first story I submitted to a magazine was accepted and published. At this time, I read an article that Tom Clancy bought part ownership in the Baltimore Orioles. I thought that if a guy can write a few books and buy a baseball team, I had to try writing my own books. I turned one of my short stories into my first novel, Shadows and Deceptions. One of the things I learned about writing was to write about what you know so it would make the story as realistic as possible. Living in the Capital District, I decided to make that the main setting for all three books.
Q. What h td do you lik like tto d do when h you are nott writing? iti ? A. I enjoy spending time with my family. I’ve been married to Lisa for twenty-three years and have two children. Our daughter, Kayla just graduated from Keuka College and our son, Connor, just graduated from Guilderland and will be attending Mercy College in the fall. Also, I have a few hobbies that I enjoy. Skiing and the world of wine is another. I find it amazing what flavors are produced by a simple grape and where they are grown. I’m a member of a Burgundy wine society called the Confrerie des Chevailier du Tastevin where we hold tastings in local restaurants. Another hobby is building military dioramas. I’ve been doing them since I was a kid and I’m finally at the stage with painting techniques where the models look lifelike.
Q. What do you love most about the business?
A. Besides seeing your name on a book cover, holding book signings was a lot of fun. I had over one hundred in ten states and was able to meet a lot of interesting people, including other authors who were holding signings as well. I would have to say the best encounter I had was when I was at a signing for Triangle of Stars and a guy ran up to my table and said “I read your first Q. Where can we find your books? BURN YOUR BOATS TO FIND SUCCESS!
W
ant to succeed in life? Burn your boats! It is a story I have heard often, but it never gets old. Legend has it that when Cortes landed his invading forces on the Mexican coast in 1519 he ordered his troops to burn their boats. This prevented retreat and gave his men two choices, succeed with the invasion or die. Retreat or quitting is easy when you have the option. In the face of fear he acted decisively and was victorious. His actions assured his men’s commitment to the goal of invading Mexico. How often do we let our fears get in the way of taking decisive action? What could you accomplish if you made a commitment where failure wasn’t an option? One of my biggest fears has always been the freefall in skydiving. Just watching skydivers would make me sweat. I guess everyone has fears, heights, snakes, confined spaces, crowds, you name it and I think there is a phobia. For me it was skydiving. It irritated me that just the thought of skydiving scared me. I became committed to making a skydiving jump. I booked a date with a friend last summer and put a non refundable deposit down. I was committed. However, when they cramped me in an archaic, stripped down Cessna with even the pilot wearing a chute, I felt my commitment waning. A small plane like that takes about 20 minutes of circling to attain a 10,000 foot jump height. It is an eternity, and I remember having fears and doubts creeping in my mind the entire flight. I thought I was committed before I got in the plane. It dawned on me about half
way up that the real commitment comes when they open the door, you get hit in the face with a cold 80 MPH wind, and you decide to throw your body towards the earth at 120 MPH. That is when you burn your boats. Once you step through the door there is no turning back. Funny thing happened. Once we started plummeting to the earth, all the fear and anxiety disappeared. The decision had been made and there was nothing to do but enjoy the ride. When I got down I did a little research and found my experience was typical. In one study I read, they found skydiver’s heart rates max out immediately before the jump. As soon as they jump their heart rates actually declined, likely because they have become committed to the jump. I think life is the same way. Indecisiveness leads to fear and anxiety. Make a commitment to burn your boats or “take the plunge� and you become focused. The anxiety and fear disappear and are replaced with your vision. What boats or “crutches� do you need to burn to become committed to your goals?

Outside the Comfort Zone
O
n July 14th many of our students at Guilderland Martial Arts attended the North East Open tournament at the Marriott Hotel on Wolf Road. When a student performs at this tournament they must formally approach a panel of judges, confidently and strongly introduce themselves, explain what they are going to perform and after finding their starting point that will keep their routine in the ring, begin their performance. After their performance the student must endure a period during which they stand at attention and are graded. Then comes the waiting to see if they score high enough to place. There are any number of things that can go wrong that make the situation a rough one for anyone.
Certainly you recognize this process since you have in some form been watching some or all of the Olympics. The Olympics represent the pinnacle of international competition in sports. Like gymnastics, basketball, track and field, swimming and a host of other sports, World Taekwondo Federation Taekwondo has within its structure a clear path to the Olympics. For many of the participants even a small local tournament feels like the Olympics and achieving the completion of their routine feels like a victory. If they can come away with the added victory of a prize then the feeling is even better. As I have said before it is not solely about winning, though that is indeed the driving force. It is mostly about the development of character. The students that achieve participation in tournaments gain experience in being outside of their comfort zone. When they are asked to give a presentation at school or at work it will be easy. They will be used to being a little, if not very, uncomfortable and they will be successful. I am in front of a class of students most of the time. I ask people all the time to be out of their comfort zone because I know it is good for them. Very few of them sincerely want to electively be in the spotlight. Think about how you would feel if you were asked to get up in front of a crowd and talk about some topic or do something. 90% of you would probably feel at least a little sense of panic. But if you were to do it and pull it off, you would be happy about it and better for the experience. We need a push to excel in life and we need to get out of our comfort zone to live and become stronger. At the end of the school year, I put some of my fabulous teaching friends at Guilderland High School outside of their comfort zone by having them break boards. They overcame every aspect of leaving their comfort zone. They loved it and I was thrilled to provide the experience. Find a way to make it happen, even though you worry about it. I intend to keep doing it to myself at tournaments and I have another plan for something big, but until I complete the training and sign up, that will remain a secret that hopefully I can report to you next year. My congratulations to all of our students that participated in the tournament by performing or supporting those that did. None of us can be successful without the support of our family and friends for the training necessary to succeed.
