Libraries as Community Builders by Tim Wiles, Library Director
Guilderland, NY - As you’re reading this, spring is in high gear. Baseball bats are swinging, as are children on playgrounds. This annual rebirth of earth tends to bring us back to a more youthful mindset of unadulterated pursuits. In the course of our jampacked grown-up schedules, that childlike sense of wonder seems to awaken a bit this time of year, along with the dormant tulip bulbs. There are several advantages to working at a library, one being the constant connection to children. They remind us of what’s truly important in life, challenge us to be better people, and keep us thinking forward. We catch a glimpse of future promise in their precious, wide-eyed faces. One of our most popular youth programs, 3 Little Birds: Music & Movement, is a weekly highlight for staff and families alike on Friday mornings at 10:30. The program has been on hiatus as its leader, Librarian Josalyn Wilder, recovers from a debilitating injury. The temporary absence of 3 Little Birds underscores just how much families and their children value these programs providing the winning combination of learning through movement and music, often pre-preschool. Here are just a few of several sentiments shared, along with many get well wishes: When I put my daughter down for a nap a few minutes ago, I could hear her singing your songs with her stuffed animal: ”Move your feet to the beat, this is how your heart beats”….and “H-e-l-l-o, this is how we say hello! Two years old and she can already spell! Thanks again! My granddaughter has been practicing her ukulele and is looking forward to showing you how she plays so well. At her 2nd birthday party this Sunday, she’ll wish for your arm to be all better when she blows out the candles on her cake. “My daughter uses her toys to play 3 Little Birds at home and sings the songs from class.” From several patrons: “We bought our child rhythm sticks for her birthday because s/he loves 3 Little Birds so much!” “Hope you are drinking lots of milk to help with the healing process.” Josalyn painstakingly typed responses to each heartfelt message with one hand, which speaks to the amount of caring that goes both ways. And the good news is, 3 Little Birds is back Friday mornings in May! – to the delight of many. According to Josalyn, it’s morphed into something more meaningful than a class. “We’ve created a community through this program,” she exclaims. “Our space has become their destination - and that is key. Programs with the potential to make libraries community builders are worth it all!”
The 3 Little Birds program is a strong example – one of many -- why Guilderland Public Library is seeking to grow. It routinely draws 150+ people, and the storytime room was built to accommodate 40. Several children’s programs are at capacity levels as the demand for excellent educational offerings soars. A major thrust of our library renewal plan involves providing more space for children to thrive socially and intellectually, well before they step foot into a school building, and throughout their formative years. We also seek a dedicated space for teens to explore and connect in a safe and welcoming environment, plus more meeting space to fulfill requests. The proposed plans by Butler Rowland Mays Architects, LLP, a local firm that specializes in library design, are based on public input and have been carefully crafted over 15 months to be cost effective and also forward-thinking. Guilderland Public Library dates back to 1992, making it over a quarter-century old. We are currently operating well beyond our capacity. There is no room to expand our collection, meet existing and future programming needs, and offer an adequate number of quiet study and reading spaces. Here are a few 2018 stats to illustrate: · · · ·

In addition to the clear need to expand to satisfy public demand, fundamental maintenance upgrades are also required at this juncture – things like installation of a sprinkler system, and modifications to enhance overall safety that were not envisioned in the early 1990s. We refer to ourselves as “Guilderland’s Gathering Place”, a place where anyone is welcome - the de facto hub of the community. This was underscored recently with the outpouring of support for the Hulslander family following a devastating house fire on a weekend, as donations flooded our lobby over that weekend and beyond. It’s a privilege for us to accommodate neighborly needs such as this. We also anticipate greater foot traffic as sidewalks are installed past our packed parking lot. And we have not even touched on meeting the exponential needs of the burgeoning senior population, and the impact those ballooning demographics will have on our facility. That’s for another article. The library renewal project will be on the ballot May 21. It is a less ambitious plan than was proposed in 2012. We plan to contribute $1.4 million dollars to the project, and are seeking approval of just under $7 million to move forward. On Saturday, April 27th from 10am to 2pm in the Guilderland Library’s auxiliary parking lot, the Police Department is collecting for proper
disposal any controlled, non-controlled, and over-the-counter medication (no needles, syringes or sharp items). The materials are collected in a discreet manner, with no questions and no identification, and directly dropped into an on-site retainer for later disposal. This event helps with secure and proper disposal of potentially harmful medicines in homes and places of work.
On Saturday, April 27th from 9am to Noon, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission and The Nature Conservancy are celebrating Earth Day by working with volunteers on conservation projects in the Pine Bush Preserve. Among the noted speakers is Professor Holly Ahern, SUNY Adirondack (Microbiology), a nationally recognized expert on this subject, who will explain the nature of tick pathogens, strategies to avoid tick bites, problems with diagnostic testing, and treatment options. This presentation is timely with the Spring opening of the Town’s golf course, hiking trails, open spaces, parks, and sports fields.

PAYING FOR THE “DREAM” SCHOOL, NOT JUST A PROBLEM OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS by Leyla A. Kiosse
Guilderland, NY -The media has recently been full of stories regarding the rich and famous taking extraordinary measures so that their children are accepted into the “best” colleges. Their actions include bribing school officials, coaches, and hiring “smart” people to pose as their children and take the SATs. I think that if you are fabulously wealthy you can already provide your children with many advantages, and don’t need to face prison to make their way into life easier. However, even average families will take extraordinary measures so that their children can attend the school that either the child has fallen in love with or the school the parent thinks will put their child onto easy street. When families are apart, courts often become involved in making these decisions. Under New York law1, when determining support, a court can also add on the expenses of higher education, “having regard for the circumstances of the case.” There are many factors that will be considered such as the income and assets of the family, support payments, and the ability of the child. What happens when a family has already made a decision about college and are then going through a divorce? In a recent case2, the parties were going through a divorce after a 25-year marriage. Paternal Grandpa had set up college savings accounts that helped defray their children's college costs. The third child wanted to attend a college which exceeded Grandpa's money. The parents told the child that if she wanted to attend this college, she would be responsible for the additional cost. However, the Husband, unbeknownst to the Wife, took out student loans in the amount of $154,000 to enable this child to go to her school of choice. Grandpa helped Dad make payments for several years, but was then unable to do so. The loan went into default and another $43,000 accrued in fees and collection costs. At the time of trial, the Father argued that the debt was a family debt and therefore the Mother should also be responsible. As the Mother had no knowledge of the loan until the divorce, and the Father had listed it as his obligation, the Court held that she was not responsible. I imagine Dad is not too happy about walking away with a debt of almost a quarter of a million dollars! When helping your children choose college, keep in mind that you do not know where life will take you- divorce, illness, or losing a spouse is [sadly] always a possibility. Therefore, take cost into consideration. If you decide to co-sign a loan, keep in mind that the primary borrower (even your own child) may not actually pay it back. In this case, it is not two people paying back this debt, but an individual, and probably not something Dad wanted to be saddled with at mid-life.

Guilderland, NY - Yippie! It’s spring! Time to come out of hibernation and get outside. Let your neighbors know you’re still alive because they may not have seen you in the past 6 months. There is something about spring that motivates us to move, to work in the yard, take a walk or run. Maybe you are planning for your upcoming running season. Before you hit the pavement running too hard or too fast, lets talk injury prevention. Runners are one of the hardest groups of athletes to work with. They are notorious for avoiding stretching and training though injuries. They often come hobbling into the clinic in pain and say “fix me but don’t tell me to stop running because I have a race in 3 days.” Your first step to ward off injuries this running season is to prevent them.
Common injuries that we see with runners are plantar

Spring is here and home maintenance thoughts start turning from inside to outside. Maybe you’re considering getting your home ready to sell and need to check out its “curb appeal”, or maybe you’re just getting things ready for the upcoming outdoor season – either way, the following checklist should help your plans to spruce things up and also give you a head start on warding off future maintenance problems. TREES In the wet and well-treed Northeast, you need to keep an eye on potential problems caused by the trees on your property. As you tour, look for limbs that have cracked or are sagging or trees that may have more of a lean than you remember. Check for overhanging limbs that may be shading the roof and causing mildew problems or that may be deposing leaves or pine needles that can clog gutters and create a fire hazard. FENCES A good place to start is with the perimeter of your property. Winter plays havoc with fences, so check them out carefully. Wiggle the posts to see that they’re still firmly set and look for loose fence boards and loose or rotted stringers. Check also to see if the fence is due for a fresh coat of paint or other finish. FOUNDATION Check the foundation for signs of cracks or other leakage problems. Small cracks can be a source for seepage into the crawl space and you especially want to take notice of larger cracks that may indicate movement in the ground under or around the home. If you’ve noticed water in your basement, keep that in mind as you analyze both the foundation and the surrounding drainage patterns. DRAINAGE While walking the property, be sure and think about drainage around your home as well. Winter storms can cause shifts in local topography that may change drainage patterns, allowing water to move or pool around the foundation or come into contact with your siding. Look for areas of water staining on the concrete or dirt or water stain patterns on siding.

Walk the entire deck to check for protruding nails and also to see if everything feels solid – sometimes a simple walk will point up loose supports or areas that need additional bracing. You’ll also want to pay attention to deck rails, looking for loose boards, missing nails, separated joints and support posts that feel wobbly. Finally, check the condition of the deck’s finish and determine if a fresh coat is due this summer. SIDING Carefully examine the siding to see what winter has wrought. Look at the paint, especially on the main weather-exposure sides of the house. Check the caulking around windows, trim boards and siding penetrations such as lights and faucets. Look for cracked or sagging boards or nails that are working loose. HOUSE NUMBERS While you’re looking at the siding, take a moment to check your house numbers. Are they firmly attached and clearly visible from the street? Do they even exist? GUTTERS Bad gutters can cause a variety of moisture problems and also detract from the appearance of your home. Check that gutters are firmly attached and that downspouts are well secured and draining properly away from the house. Check the paint for deterioration, especially around joints where you may find indications of leaks in the seams. ROOFING Let your eyes keep wandering upward and take a critical look at the condition of your roofing – you may even find that a pair of binoculars comes in handy. Check to see if shingles have blown off or worked loose if they’re starting to curl. For asphalt shingles, look at the overall condition of the mineral granules that coat the shingles. Look at the ridge shingles – especially wood ridge – to see if any are cracked or missing. Check the condition of flashings and skylights as well.
