Unit 1

Connections to Country and place

Lesson 1.1

Caring for Country

Learning intention We are learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ connection to Country.

Acknowledgement of Country Acknowledging Country is a way for all of us to show respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who are the Traditional Owners of the land. At important events, an Acknowledgement of Country is said. These events can include meetings, conferences, school assemblies, concerts and sporting matches. This is an example of an Acknowledgement of Country used in primary schools in St Albans, Victoria.

We respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school sits.

We recognise and acknowledge the Traditional Owners as the original storytellers, teachers and students of this land we call Australia. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present, for the ways in which they have enabled the teachings of their rich cultures and knowledge systems to be shared for millennia.

Lesson 2.2 Fresh water and salt water Learning intention We are learning about the difference between fresh water and salt water.

Salt water • Salt water makes up 97% of the world’s water. It is mostly found in the oceans. • Salt water is much heavier than fresh water, which means it is easier for things to float in salt water. • Drinking salt water is not good for you. Your body has to work harder to get rid of the extra salt, which makes you really thirsty.

• Some animals can only live in salt water, like coral, octopuses and squid. Other animals, such as turtles and marine iguanas, have adapted to be able to live in salt water. • The Dead Sea is a salt-water lake that is 10 times saltier than the ocean. No plants or animals can survive there because it is so salty.

Unit 3

Ancient civilisations and cultures

Lesson 3.1

Oldest living culture

Learning intention We are learning that First Nations peoples have the oldest living continuous cultures and that stories, objects and special places help us learn about the past and living cultures.

Stories in rock art Aboriginal rock art is like a very old picture book. The symbols on the rocks tell stories without using written words. First Nations peoples have long used symbols to tell stories. People painted animals, people and shapes on rock walls. These pictures shared knowledge about Country, such as where to find water or food. The symbols help teach children about rules, seasons and caring for Country. These paintings are still special today and help us learn about the past and living cultures.

Lesson 3.5 Exploring ancient places Learning intention We are learning that objects and places from Ancient Greece and Egypt can help us learn about the past.

A visit to Athens Dear Diary, Yesterday I went to the museum in Athens. I saw clay pots with pictures of people playing games and cooking food on them. I saw a statue of a runner and a shiny gold necklace. I learnt that these objects were found by archaeologists and show how people lived long ago.

Today we visited the Acropolis. I learnt that the Parthenon is a temple built for the goddess Athena. We also visited a temple that has columns shaped like women. It is called the Erechtheion. We also saw an ancient stone gate and an old theatre. It was amazing to see places that were built so long ago! – Kyra

Lesson 4.4 Families then and now Learning intention We are learning that families have changed over time, but some things stay the same.

Diary entry of a 7-year-old girl 5 March 1900 Dear Diary, Today I woke up early to help Mama before breakfast. I carried water from the pump and fed the chickens. Papa went to work in town, and my older brother helped him. Mama stayed home to cook, sew and look after us.

After chores, I walked to school with my sister. We wrote on slates and read stories. When I came home, I helped peel potatoes and watched my baby brother. Then we all sat by the fire. Papa read a book while Mama mended clothes. We talked together before bed, then Mama read us a story. I am very tired but happy today. Annie

Lesson 4.6 Communicating across the ages: Review Learning intention We are reviewing how communication, families and inventions have changed over time.

Communicating across the ages We have been learning about how life has changed over time. We compared our lives with our parents and grandparents, and we saw how communication has grown from writing letters and talking in person to using phones and the internet. We learnt how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

have shared ideas for thousands of years through storytelling and symbols. We explored how families have changed but still care for each other. We also learnt how inventions shaped daily life, travel and communication. Even though the tools have changed over time, people have always wanted to share ideas and stay connected.
