Part 1 of this book consists of four chapters that, taken as a whole, provide an overarching framework for the teaching of mathematics in early childhood education. Individually, the chapters address the following topics: » introduction to early childhood mathematics education » becoming an early childhood mathematics educator » using early childhood theory to inform mathematics education » early childhood mathematics curricula. Collectively, these chapters provide different lenses on early childhood mathematics education, including theoretical perspectives, the role of the numerate educator, and the place of mathematics in various early childhood curricula. It is anticipated that Part 1 will provide a useful framework for interpreting the subsequent parts and chapters of this book, and it is likely that you will revisit these opening chapters a number of times as you progress through the book. Indeed, this book purposefully unfolds layers of knowledge relevant to early childhood mathematics education—chapter by chapter, part by part—to help you in building up a comprehensive professional identity as a mathematics educator that is informed by a range of different but complementary perspectives.
