A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Standing behind the curtain before it goes up, waiting in the gallery before the exhibit opens, touching the keys before the first note is played, there is a moment of anticipation. The artist feels a rush, an excitement for what is about to unfold. We hope that this brochure you hold in your hands will be that moment for you. It contains a preview of Ouachita’s 2014-2015 School of Fine Arts season, information about visiting artists and even ways you can be involved beyond just attending. Every year our faculty and students labor diligently to produce a season of high quality entertainment and creative exploration. We invite you to experience the wide variety of works presented this year. I am also excited about our expanded Guest Artist Series, which will include performing, music and visual artists from across the country. Olga Krayterman is a Belarussian-born American pianist. She received the 2013 Young Artist Prize of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Olga, who began her piano study at age 6, continued her musical education in Cincinnati after immigrating to the U.S. with her family in 1995. Olga currently is completing her Doctor in Piano Performance and Literature degree with a minor in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where she also earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees with high distinction.
Black Bayou Brass has been a faculty ensemble in residence at the University of Louisiana at Monroe since 1971. Its current members are Dr. Aaron Witek, trumpet; Dr. James Boldin, horn; and Dr. James Layfield, trombone. They are dedicated to performing, promoting and creating new literature for brass trio, as well as playing standard original repertoire and transcriptions from the 16th century to the present.
Dr. John Barcellona, “The Flute Doctor,” is the director of woodwind studies and professor of flute at California State University Long Beach and flutist with the internationally acclaimed Westwood Wind Quintet. Studio credits include recordings for Disney and film scores composed by Christopher Caliendo. His solo album, Is This the Way to Carnegie Hall? (with Calvin Smith, horn), was nominated by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for a Grammy Award. The Spring Flute Seminar is sponsored by Ouachita and the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble.
Chris Hanning Recycled Percussion Since Justin Spencer formed Recycled Percussion in 1995, the band has been unstoppable. Their junk rock music became a national phenomenon during their performances on America’s Got Talent (2009). Playing more than 4,400 shows and corporate events in more than 15 countries, the group also has made guest appearances on Carson Daly, The Today Show, China’s Got Talent and the Latin Grammy Awards. The band has been featured on the cover of USA Today and been voted National Act of the Year a recordbreaking six times.
Dr. Chris Hanning is a professor of percussion at West Chester University and performs with the Peter Paulsen Quintet, the Bach Festival Orchestra of Bethlehem and Philadelphia’s premier contemporary music ensemble, Relâche. Chris performed on numerous recordings for NFL Films over the past 12 years including several Emmy Awardwinning projects. You can hear Chris every year when the Lombardi Trophy music is played during the Super Bowl.
Hie-Yon Choi Choi, a professor of piano at the Seoul National University in Korea, has won many national and international prizes, including the Busoni in Italy, the Kapell in the United States, Clara Haskil in Switzerland and Maria Callas in Athens. Her recordings include “Six Grand Etudes on Paganini” by F. Liszt and the complete études by F. Chopin. Her most recent work includes the performance of Beethoven’s complete 32 sonatas. Choi studied with Gyorgy Sebok at Indiana University and Hans Leygraf in Berlin. She frequently gives master classes in Korea, Germany and the U.S.

Kamikaze Fireflies

If you want a fun date or to laugh along with your kids – or you’re so old that you just want one more amazing experience before they put you on an all-Jello diet – then this is the show for you. Kamikaze Fireflies is a Los Angeles-based, twoperson vaudeville smack down with acts like giant metal cubes, contortionist backbends and extreme balancing. Rob Williams and Casey Martin combine their years of learning strange tricks in a dazzling display. And if you don’t like the show, you can punch them (some restrictions apply).
Jason McCann’s artwork tends to focus on urban architecture as well as figurative subject matter. His work uses expressive paint application and color to capture the energy and spontaneity of his subjects. Since 1995, his artwork has been displayed in numerous shows and exhibitions across the southeast United States. He currently teaches art at Little Rock Central High School as well as at Arkansas Governor’s School. He and his wife, Melissa, reside in Maumelle with their daughters, Reilly and Leah.
John Deering is the chief editorial cartoonist and illustrator at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, where he has worked since 1980. John studied fine art at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He is an award-winning artist, sculptor, cartoonist, illustrator, art restorer and political speaker. John and his wife of 34 years, Kathy, live in Little Rock and have three children.
David Hill
Small Works on Paper Small Works on Paper showcases artwork no larger than 24” x 24” by Arkansas artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online art gallery coordinated by the Arkansas Arts Council. The exhibition annually tours to 10 venues in the state. The works for the exhibition are chosen in a juried competition by an out-of-state juror.
David Hill’s ceramic works make use of the fragmented form, both abstract and figurative, to explore the suffering, fragility and mortality inherent in life while alluding to a transcendence over those very things. At its core, his pieces arise from the desire to provide a place to examine the suffering everyone experiences and how it can be overcome. His goal is to meet the viewers in the midst of their own troubling circumstances and hint at the fact that there is hope despite the suffering. In shared pain, we can find solidarity and strength.
