Janet Louise Roberts is, today, one of America ' s most successf ul and pro I ific authoresses The 1946 Otterbein graduate's pub I i catio n of The Vallette Heritage recently mark ed a mil esto ne-100 novels published and nearly 10 million copies of her works in print
Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Janet Roberts ' family moved to the Philippines as missionaries when she was six months old, then returned five years later to Hartford , Connecticut. They moved, after two years, to Dayton which remains Miss Roberts ' home today.
Janet Roberts received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and minors in French and Spanish from Otterbein College where she was active throughout her academic career on student publications She was a staff writer for four years on the Tan and Cardinal, was a Sibyl staffer as a junior and senior, and exercised her creative writing skills with Quiz and Quill, an organization she se rved as president She won the Barnes Short Story Contest as a senior and was president of Phi Sigma Iota romanc e language honorary. She also was a member of Sigma Alpha Tau sorority . She was the fourth generation of her family to graduate from Otterbein
Determined by the time of her college graduati o n to become an author, Janet Roberts took various clerical jobs that would allow ample time to free-lance in short stories and nov els. She also traveled extensively, living for various times in Florence, Rome, and London, visiting many other places in Europe.
In 1965, she returned to co llege and earned a master 's degree in library science from Columbia Univ e rsity , then, in 1966, became a refer e nce librarian at the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library .
Writing under the pen name s of Louisa Bronte, Rebecca Danton and Janette Rad c liff e, as well as her own name, she has become one of the most successful writers of hi storical romance in America
When her work, Island of Desire, entered the top ten on the Mass Market of Best Sellers in November 1977, then topped the one million copy mark during 1978, it became clear that Janet Louise Roberts had moved among the top echelon of popular American authors
She is a meticulous and thorough researcher, demanding of herself to write works which her readers will want to read word by word. She calls upon her liberal arts education regularly to provide the insights to develop the intricate nuances of character and plot. She strives, above all, to create characters who are sympathetic and can show compassion.
For her remarkable success as an author, for her demonstration of the highest qualities of the liberally educated woman, and for her continual demonstration of Christian compassion, Otterbein College proudly awards the degree of Doctor of Humanities to Janet Louise Roberts.

1. In a quiet peaceful village there is one we love so true, She ever gives a welcome to her friends both old and new, She stands serene ' mid tree tops green, She 's our dear Otterbein.
CHORUS:
Old Otterbein our college, we sing of thee today, Our memories round thee linger in a sweet and mystic way. 0 Otterbein, we love thee, our hearts are only thine, We pledge anew, we will be true, Dear Otterbein
2. Her halls have their own message Of truth, and hope, and love . She guides her youths and maidens To the I ife that looks above, Her state ly tower Speaks naught but power For our dear Otterbein!
