He is a leader in the publishing-communications field and has diversified business interests. He is president of two corporations, treasurer of five and director of fifteen.

Community service as much as business success has characterized his career He was a charter member of the Otterbein College Development Board. He is a member of the Otterbein Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the Board and holds similar positions with Alfred University and the Unive rsity of Pittsburgh at Bradford. MARGARET CHASE SMITH

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Senator Margaret Chase Smith began her remarkable career as a legislator in 1940 when she entered the U S. House of Representatives. Mrs. Smith 's inspiring leadership during the troubled years of World War II prompted fellow citizens from Maine to advance her to the U.S . Senate in the election of 1948.

Senator Smith 's biography sparkles with striki ng accomplishments Upon graduation from high school, she entered the teachi n g profession and, soon after leaving the classroom, became an executive for a telephone company and later a newspaper She was

the only woman ever to have been elected to four full terms in the U.S Senate, the first woman to serve in a Senate leadership post, and the first woman nominated for President of the United States at a national convention of a major political party. Her popularity as measured by ballot boxes in Maine has broken several statewide and national electoral records Senator Smith holds the all-time Senate record for casting consecutive roll call votes, a measure of her outstanding faithfulness to the legislative process Only recently she has proposed a constitutional amendment which would enable the expulsion of legislators from either branch of Congress if they failed to participate in 40 per cent of the roll call votes.

The committees on which Senator Smith serves include the prestigious Appropriations Committee, the Armed Services Committee, the Space Committee , and the Government Operations Committee Over the years she has developed respected expertise in the area of national defense matters. In 1960 she proposed a constitutional amendment which would provide for the direct nomination and election of Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, thus eliminating the electoral college. Her faithfulness to her Congressional tasks and her independence of judgment have won high esteem from her associates, the press, and academic observers. Her integrity came sharply into focus in 1950 when she declared her opposition to unsubstantiated accusations of disloyalty which one of her Senate colleagues leveled at fellow citizens in a manner quite out of keeping with traditional American standards of fair play which Senator Smith shared Her " Declaration of Conscience," the theme of her recent book published by Doubleday, was soon ranked with other leading classics of American statecraft.

National and international acclaim has come to Senator Smith from many sources. A full listing of her awards and citations would take several pages. In 1964 the United Press Radio Editors named her Woman of the Year . In 1966 the Gallup Poll discovered that she was one of the five most admired women in the world, an enduring judgment which came to light again in 1972 when the Harris Poll identified her as one of the four most respected women in the world. As an ambassador of good will Senator Smith has touched the hearts of people around the world.

Numerous organization s and societies are linked with the career of Senator Smith. Among these are the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Pi Sigma Alpha (Honorary, Political Science), Delta Kappa Gamma (Honorary , Education Sorority), and Theta Sigma Phi (Honorary, Journalism). One may suspect that her grandfather, a Methodist minister, had some influence in bringing her within the membership of the United Methodist Church. The fact that more than sixty American institutions of higher education have conferred honorary degrees on Senator Smith illustrates the very special regard which fellow Americans have expressed for her

We at Otterbein College are honored to be among those sister institutions which have recognized Senator Smith ' s integrity, independence of judgment, compassion , and sense of duty so precious to common goals of the community of scholars and the community of mankind.

THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON

TO THE 1972 COLLEGE GRADUATES:

When I think of what it means to be graduating from college in today's world, I reflect sometimes on the story that is told of an old and wise teacher in ancient Greece. It is said that there was no question which the teacher could not answer and nothing which he could not understand. Finally, one student thought of a way to discredit his teacher's wisdom.

The student planned to conceal a bird in his hands. He would ask the old man to guess what he was holding and, if he guessed a bird, the boy would ask whether it was dead or alive. Should the old man guess dead, the boy would let the bird fly away. But, if the wise man guessed the bird was alive, the boy would crush out its life and open his hands to reveal a dead bird. And so it happened, until the boy asked, "Is the bird alive or dead?" The old man replied, "My son, the answer to that question is in your hands."

Today the future of this Nation surely rests in your hands. Whether the promise of progress and prosperity will be realized, whether democracy and freedom will grow, whether men will continue to be governed by human wisdom all this, and more, rests in your hands.

You are the best educated generation in our history. What will you do with your knowledge and ideas? How fully will you engage your mind and will and spirit in helping to make America an even better place to live?

I am hopeful that you will use your talents and knowledge to help make our Nation's ideals a reality. Now is the time for a future of peace, for more responsive government, for equal opportunity for all. I congratulate you on what you have finished and look forward with hope toward what you can now begin to accomplish.
