Joseph Robert Graham

DOCTOR OF DIVINITY

The Reverend Mr. Joseph R. Graham, Superintendent of the Ohio Sandusky Conference for the past three years, has been appointed as Superintendent of the Athens District, West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He will assume this position on June 19.

Mr. Graham is a graduate of Bluffton College (1951) and United Theological Seminary (1953). Before his appointment to the conference position, he served as pastor of the Blue Lick, Pasco, Sandusky Salem and Lima First United Methodist Churches. He and Mrs. Graham are the parents of a son and ,two daughters.

An active participant in Annual Conference affairs, he was a member of ,the Board of Christian Education (1953-1960), was editor of The Ohio Sandusky News monthly (1953-1961), was recording secretary of the Conference (1956-1967), and a member of the Conference Council of Administration (1954-1969).

He served as a delegate from the Ohio Sandusky Conference to the General Conference in 1958, 1962, 1966, 1968 and 1970, and to the Jurisdictional Conference in Peoria, Illinois in 1968. He served on the Local Church Structure Committee under the Joint Commissions on Church Union of the Evangelical U nited Brethren and Methodist Churches in 1967, was a member of •the General Board of Health and Welfare Ministries in 1968, and has been chairman of the General Conference Legislative Committee on Health and Welfare Ministries since 1968. He is now serving a second four-year term as a ,trustee of Flat Rock Children's Home and is secretary of that board.

Inter-denominational responsibilities have included the presidency of the Allen County Ministerial Association (1964-1965) and membership on the General Board of the Ohio Council of Churches and its Executive Committee.

Sincerely concerned with the problems of the parish minister, Mr. Graham brings to his executive sessions a warm and sympathetic attitude that engenders the best possible solutions to the problems of the church in today's world.

Arthur Leroy Schultz

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Dr. Arthur L Schultz is the tenth president of Albright College, a United Methodist institution in Reading, Pennsylvania. He had formerly served as pastor of the Albright United Methodist Church, Pittsburgh, and from 1956 to 1965 was director of alumni and public relations at Otterbein College.

President Schultz is a graduate of Otterbein and of United Theological Seminary, and received the Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a charter member of the Westerville Rotary Club and was District Governor of

Rotary District 669 in 1965. He wa s listed in th e 1965 edition of "Outstanding Young Men of America," and appears in "Who's Who in American Education" and "Who's Who in the East."

Doctor Schultz is a member of the Executi ve Committee and chairman of the Committee on Student R e l a tions of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universiti e s, and sits on the Executive Committee of the Foundation for Independent College s of Pennsylvania, Inc. He is on the Board of Managers of Reading Hospital , the Board of Directors of the United Community Service s, and is a member of various Masonic orders. He also serves as president of the P e nnsylvania Council on Alcohol Problems and as chairman of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing Board.

Doctor and Mrs. Schultz, the form e r Louise Stouffer, an Otterbein classmate, have two children: Thomas Arthur, a member of the 1970 graduating class at Otterbein, and Rebecca Louise, fifteen.

Under President Schultz's guidance, Albright College has engaged in a building program including two new dormitories, a campus center, a new science wing and the renovation of existing facilities to provide extra cla ssrooms, offices and a computer center. Most of the financing of these improvements has been met by a capital fund compaign which went over its $2,300,000 goal by more than $20,000.

The Albright president is also credited with the re-orientation of the curriculum and the adoption of a 4-1-5 calendar, a four-year degree program in nursing and expansion in the fine arts, music, the sciences and home economics. The coll e ge has also develope d the unique Operation Aspiration , which brings the coll ege into coop eration with the black community.

President Schultz is inde e d a distinguished alumni of Otterbein College.

John Joseph Akar

DOCTOR OF LAWS

His Excellency Dr. John J. Akar, M.B.E. , became Ambassador Extraordinary and Pl e nipotenti a r y to the United States from his native Sierra Leone in 1969.

Doctor Akar was the fir st African to work for the Briti sh Broadcasting System, London (1950-1955) and the Voice of America (1955-1957). He returned to Sierra Leone to become Head of Programmes (19571960) and Director of Broadca sting for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service , a post which he held from 1960 to 1967.

He has served as Secretary, Hotels and Tourism of Sierra Leone (1965-1967), as chairman of the National Museum and Monuments and Relics Commission (1955-1968), and a s a member of the Museum Committee since 1968. He was the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Secretariat in London from 1967 to 1969. He and his American-born wife are the parents of six daughters.

The ambassador attended Otterbein College from 1947 to 1949 and received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1950. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Lincoln's Inn Law School in London , and was a Nuf-

field Scholar in African Studies at Edinburgh University. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humanities degree at Albright College, Reading, Pennsylvania, on May 31, 1970.

Composer of the Sierra Leone national anthem, Doctor Akar was honored as a "Member of the Order of th e British Empire" (M.B.E.) in recognition of his contribution to culture in his native l a nd. He is also the author of several plays and short s tories and innumerable articles.

Ambassador Akar sees his assignment to Washington as far more vital than merely maintaining social rapport with the American government and the 140 other governments which maintain embassies there.

He envisions Sierra Leone's "indescribably beautiful" be a ches and mountains as becoming a tourist mecca, particularly for American Negroes "seeking cultural identification with Africa " He also believes that the very poverty of his homeland makes it a promising manufacturing center, and he is dedicated to helping improve conditions for his people.

The long and warm association of Sierra Leone with Otterbein College and Otterbein's expanded program of teacher education in that country make it especially appropriate that the college should this year honor so distinguished a citizen a s John J Akar
