Welcome to Oklahoma City!
This year marks two national celebrations – the Route 66 Centennial and America’s 250th Birthday! Oklahoma City’s story is woven into both significant commemorations. Our country and city share a complex past filled with examples of grit and resilience that have nurtured our people and present. We are innovators, descendants and allies, influenced by both the past and the desire to make the future better for all. From Civil Rights icon Clara Luper to the 40th anniversary of Red Earth Festival, come join in the celebration of OKC’s distinctive roots and cultural diversity. In 1926, the Mother Road was built to connect rural America to urban centers, and 100 years later it still attracts visitors from around the world for a great American road trip. With nostalgic diners and photogenic landmarks, plus new, modern attractions, Oklahoma City’s stretch of Route 66 is as quirky and fun as the people you’ll meet along our 51 miles of the famous highway. In OKC, you’ll be greeted with an overflowing kindness as you discover our special blend of friendly Southwest hospitality. As one of America’s top 20 cities, you can explore nationally acclaimed dining and street art, cheer on your team in one of our world-championship sports venues or stroll like a local through our many districts. We invite you to enjoy the soul-stirring experiences that await you in Oklahoma City.

GET YOUR KICKS As OKC celebrates 100 years of the Mother Road, new events and attractions are popping up throughout 2026. Check out the latest Route 66 news at VisitOKC.com.
A century ago, Route 66 became one of the first federal highways in the nation, stretching 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. Right in the middle is Oklahoma, the state with the most drivable miles of the route and a capital teeming with roadside treasures. America’s Main Street is a main attraction in Oklahoma City, where the historic road weaves its way through neighborhoods and landmarks — past the only state capitol complex with oil derricks, along architectural marvels and through the only Asian district on the route. For the ultimate road trip in Oklahoma City, here’s where to get your kicks on Route 66.
39
STATE CAPITOL COMPLEX Rising over the Northeast side of OKC like a beacon, the Oklahoma State Capitol was designed in classic Greco-Roman style by architect Solomon Layton and built of white limestone and pink granite between 1914 and 1917. And the capitol didn’t get a dome until 2002, capped with a Native American statue commemorating the state’s rich Indigenous history. Under the dome, visitors will find the largest public art galleries in Oklahoma. Be sure to visit the Tribal Flag Plaza, featuring flags representing the recognized tribes in Oklahoma, displayed around an earthen mound inspired by Spiro Mounds, the only prehistoric Indigenous archaeological site in the state.
TOWER THEATRE Aglow in neon, Uptown 23rd is a star thoroughfare on Route 66, and the Tower Theatre its lead actor. Open since 1937, the Art Deco icon originally served as a 1,500-seat movie house, drawing cinephiles for film premieres and screenings for decades. After closing in 1989, the property reemerged in 2017 as a live music venue. Films occasionally still screen in the auditorium, along with traveling acts and themed events. Restoration efforts preserved the majesty of the building, including its neon sign, which still lights the way along 23rd Street.
OKC DISTRICTS
CHEEVER’S CAFE Just down the street from the Tower Theatre, another Route 66 icon has roots of its own. Cheever’s Cafe, ranked among OKC’s best restaurants, has been serving contemporary Southern and Southwestern food since 2000.What makes the restaurant particularly notable is the fact that the first baby born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Belle Cunningham, was born in this very building — a former home that became a flower shop after the burgeoning businesswoman married Lawrence “L.L.” Cheever. The business closed in the mid-‘90s, but the 20-foot flower case remains (albeit instead of flowers, it’s wine and desserts), providing a unique opportunity to dine amongst OKC history.

Route 66 winds through several vibrant districts in OKC, each offering its own attractions and atmosphere. These include Uptown 23rd with eclectic photo-ops and dining, and the Asian District, dotted with dim sum parlors, bubble tea shops and Asian markets. The 39th Street District is the only gayborhood on the route, home to OKC’s most popular gay bars, clubs and an annual Pride festival. Other notable districts include the Adventure District, offering action-packed amenities like the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Remington Park and the OKC Zoo, and the Britton District, a postcardperfect stretch of murals, shops, cafes and a distillery. And don’t forget to stop for photos at Will Rogers Theatre in the Western Avenue District.
THE GOLD DOME Among the preeminent pitstops on Route 66, the Gold Dome — a few blocks south of the Milk Bottle — is a feat of architectural ingenuity. Constructed in 1958 as a bank building, it was one of the first geodesic domes used for commercial business, and among the few remaining geodesic domes in the world. Over time, it’s served as office space, an art gallery and a restaurant. It’s been dormant for years, but plans to redevelop the fabled building include transforming it into a concert hall.
MILK BOTTLE GROCERY Around the corner from Uptown 23rd, Classen Boulevard is another Route 66 corridor, lined with its own distinct and kitschy landmarks. Among the standouts is the Milk Bottle Grocery, which finds a tiny sliver of a building crowned with a giant bottle of milk. The building itself, at just 350 square feet, has seen its share of businesses since its inception in the 1930s, from a fruit market to a barbecue shack. The milk bottle was added in 1948, to provide a fun photo op on Route 66, and as quirky promotion for the dairy industry. And it’s still just as photogenic today.
OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER LAKE OVERHOLSER BRIDGE A token of yesteryear, the northern shore of Lake Overholser houses its namesake bridge, constructed in 1924 to prepare for Route 66. Made of mixed trusses and stretching 748 feet, it’s as striking as the shimmering lake itself, and served as a primary portion of the route until a newer bridge was built in 1958. It closed for restoration in 2008, reopening in 2011 for local motor traffic, and it remains a nostalgic stop.
Next door to the State Capitol building, the Oklahoma History Center is your one-stop shop for Sooner State lore. The 18-acre, Smithsonian Affiliate property, encompassing 215,000 square feet of exhibit space and more than 50 different topics of state history showcases numerous facets of Oklahoma, both past and present. Their Route 66 Collection in the freeto-visit Research Center, features countless photographs, documents and oral histories from the Mother Road.

THE BIG SCREEN If it weren’t for the new releases, you might think you’d been transported back in time at the Winchester Drive-In. Ever since the summer of 1968, the outdoor theater has been a weekend tradition for friends and families who follow the vintage neon sign, Chester the Cowboy, to catch double features. The Winchester remains the only operating drive-in theater in OKC, and despite the fact that it plays modern-day movies, it looks utterly preserved in time — from the drive-thru ticket booth to the buttery popcorn. In Stockyards City, Rodeo Cinema is so historic that it makes the Winchester seem young. Originally built as a silent movie house in 1924, pre-dating Route 66 by two years, the single-screen theater now runs as a non-profit putting the spotlight on independent film. Today, it’s one of the most unique theaters in the city, showing occasional newer releases along with black-and-white oldies, Oklahoma-made films, documentaries and creative seasonal fare (like “Scooby-Doo” and “Night of the Living Dead” for Halloween).

In OKC, some of the most eye-catching attractions have stories to share. Like the Lake Hefner Lighthouse, one of just two lighthouses in landlocked Oklahoma (the other is in Elk City), built in 1999 as a direct homage to the Brant Point Lighthouse in Nantucket. The latter was established in 1746 and still operates today, making it one of the oldest in the nation. Standing 36-feet-tall (which is 10-feet taller than Brand Point), with a working red light at the top, the Lake Hefner Lighthouse is designated as an official lighthouse by the Coast Guard, although its primary use is for photo ops and sunset backdrops. In the Wheeler District, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel had a Route 66 journey of its own. Before it soared over the Oklahoma River, offering panoramic skyline views, it stood on Santa Monica Pier, where it was featured in countless commercials and blockbusters, like Iron Man. When the pier switched to another model, they literally sold it on eBay to the Wheeler District for $132,400. Once disassembled, it traveled across the country, and underwent $1 million in renovations before opening in its new home in 2016. Nowadays, it’s a marquee attraction, surrounded by hammocks and an iconic “OKC” sculpture.
ARCADE BARS In the modern era of video games and smartphones, vintage arcades are pure nostalgia. And no place does digital nostalgia like Flashback RetroPub, a Film Row “barcade” decked out with retro memorabilia, signature drinks named after ‘80s movies and TV shows, and over 100 classic arcade games, from Super Mario to Frogger. Most games are free to play, and there’s a second room stocked with carnival-style games like Skee-Ball.

OLD-SCHOOL EATS A gravy-clad blast from the past, Sherri’s Diner serves the kind of chicken-fried comfort food travelers once used to fuel their Route 66 road trips. Although it didn’t open until the ‘80s, this south side institution is straight out of the ‘50s, bedecked with vintage Coca-Cola machines, a jukebox, bottomless mugs of coffee, and of course, hulking portions of breakfast and lunch fare. Breakfast is served all day, along with fried catfish, pork chops, blue plate specials and a case full of pies. The oldest continually operating restaurant in the state, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse is basically a meat museum in Stockyards City. This perfectly preserved restaurant first opened in 1910 as a place where ranchers and cowboys could grab a bite between cattle auctions. The restaurant changed hands in 1945, when owner Hank Frey lost it in a bet to Gene Wade, but it’s remained a steadfast tradition for locals, visitors, politicians and celebrities. The steakhouse is a rite of passage and a true timeworn tradition, famed for its filets, chicken-fried steak and infamous lamb fries. One of the more unique eateries in OKC, Junior’s is a swanky supper club hidden away in the Oil Center building, where — since its inception in 1973 — it’s been regarded as “The Oilman’s Oasis.” Time seemingly stands still here, where old-school service includes supper club staples like ice-cold martinis, rib-eye steaks, and for a drinkable dessert, housemade Brandy Ice. Check out the enclosed sunken piano bar after dinner for a musical nightcap. One of the most coveted stools in town can be found at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it lunch counter, Nic’s Grill. Opened in 1997 by Justin Nicholas, the frillsfree joint is best known for its griddled burgers, which are often touted as the best in the city — and command long lines that prove it.
Elsewhere, the Plaza District features Up-Down Arcade Bar, with house-made pizzas, a huge craft beer selection and two stories of 70-plus games, including video games like Mario Kart. And in the Paseo Arts District, Sauced on Paseo recently added an on-site arcade, complete with air hockey, PacMan and even old-school arcade carpeting.
VINTAGE STORES The most stylish way to tap into OKC’s retro style is by visiting vintage shops and antique stores. The Plaza District, particularly, has become a hub for thrifting, with shops like Dig It, Bad Granny’s Bazaar and Magoo’s Attic slinging all manner of vintage clothes, art, decor and ephemera. In the Farmers Market District, The Antique Mall is a sprawling collective — in operation since 1971 — of various shops, selling everything from jewelry and cowboy boots, to Beanie Babies and vinyl records.
PSST... HERE’S AN INSIDER TIP! LUCAS ROSS Oklahoman and Banjo Enthusiast “There are two things I love, and that’s good cheese and good music. Lucky for us in Bricktown, both are within walking distance! Did you know The Melting Pot is a perfect date night? And nothing says fun like trying out an instrument, which you can do at the American Banjo Museum—located just south of The Melting Pot. That’s what I call a perfect date! Plus, now through October 2026, you can see Kermit the Frog with his banjo from the “Muppet Movie” as part of the “Pop! Goes the Banjo” exhibit. (Or should we call it ex-ribbet?)”

LIVE ON STAGE
The official theatre of Oklahoma can be found in OKC’s own Lyric Theatre. From Mary Poppins to world premieres, Lyric performs both classic and contemporary plays and musicals that tell stories of hope, empathy and foster conversation. Their home is at the Plaza Theatre in the Plaza District, but their large-scale musicals are held at the Civic Center Music Hall downtown. Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park offers performances in the warmer months in their Shakespeare Gardens in the Paseo Arts District or in their indoor black box theatre in the cooler months. Either way, their bold, imaginative retelling of the classics is entertaining to all. Led by Maestro Alexander Mickelthwate, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic calls the Civic Center Music Hall home as they bring nationally acclaimed artists and orchestral music to the city. They also offer concerts at Scissortail Park throughout the summer that are free to the public.
Oklahoma City Philharmonic
The Oklahoma City Ballet is the resident dance company of the Civic Center Music Hall and boasts talented dancers from around the world. All of their productions are presented in partnership with Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the resident orchestra of the Civic Center Music Hall. STEAMROLLER FESTIVAL
festival of the arts
ARTSPACE at Untitled brings us heavy metal printmaking at its finest. Dozens of giant wood block prints are inked and pressed by an actual steamroller. Each enormous print is then proudly displayed along the buildings, fences and the underpass along 3rd street, for the festival-goers to enjoy.
DEADCENTER FILM FESTIVAL In 20 years, deadCenter grew from a one-night screening of local short films into a global indie film phenomenon. Named one of the “20 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker Magazine, you’ll find screenings, workshops, panels and parties at venues throughout the downtown area.
PLAZA DISTRICT FESTIVAL & PLAZA WALLS
deadcenter film festival
What started as a celebration of the comeback of the revitalized Plaza District, the Plaza District Festival draws a crowd from all over the world. The weekend festival celebrates Oklahoma’s performing artists, visual artists and musicians. The annual Plaza Walls Mural Expo happens simultaneously and invites visitors to watch as artists from around the world paint new murals in the district.
PRIX DE WEST One of the premier Western art exhibitions and sales in the world is held annually at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. From contemporary sculptures to oversized landscape paintings, Prix de West has it all.
RED EARTH FESTIVAL Possibly one of the most uniquely OKC festivals, Red Earth Festival celebrates Native American culture. Taking place at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, the festival invites all to learn about First Americans’ traditions through hands-on arts and craft stations, artist demonstrations, live music and special presentations of tribal dance throughout the weekend.
WINTER HOLIDAY ART MARKET Winter Holiday Art Market (WHAM@FAM) returns for its sixth year at the First Americans Museum. Enjoy two days of First American vendors, art and entertainment in December.

Tower Theatre

Oklahoma City’s vibrant live music scene is fueled by its rich musical history, rooted in rhythm and blues. As the state’s largest city and capital, OKC attracts major touring artists while still celebrating its musical roots, offering everything from top 50 artist concerts to intimate performances at local dive bars. Opened in 1937, the historic Tower Theatre is one of Oklahoma City’s last original movie houses, known for its intact auditorium and neon marquee. After closing in 1989, it reopened in 2017 as a live music, movie and event venue in the Uptown 23rd district. With seating for over 1,100, it hosts an eclectic range of artists across various music genres.

paycom center
Paycom Center has welcomed more than 10 million fans over the past 20 years. With a capacity of over 18,000, it features concerts by major artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Drake and Zach Bryan and serves as the home of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s located just off I-40 and I-235 in downtown OKC. The Zoo Ampitheatre, lovingly known as the Zoo Amp, has been rocking and roaring since 1936. This outdoor venue has hosted top-tier artists like Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell and Grateful Dead. With 4,000 reserved seats and even more room as general admission in the lawn and standing pit, the Zoo Amp delivers legendary live music under the open sky. The Criterion is a state-of-the-art music and events venue in the Bricktown Entertainment District, with a capacity of 3,500–4,000 people for a semi-intimate concert experience. It’s within walking distance of a variety of dining options, from fast food to upscale restaurants, perfect for a pre- or post-event meal.
For weekly live music, the 51st Street Speakeasy is a favorite among local music lovers and bar enthusiasts. Blues night kicks off every Tuesday, followed by jazz on Wednesday and bluegrass on Thursday, with both local and touring bands taking the stage on weekends. Featuring a dance floor, a spacious outdoor patio and a full food and drink menu, it’s perfect for a laid-back night out. Beer City Music Hall sits at the corner of Blackwelder Avenue and NW 5th Street in downtown OKC. This 500-person, standing-room-only venue is one of OKC’s hottest live music spaces. Owned by the same group that brings you Beer City, Ponyboy is a small live music venue located in Uptown 23rd. Their performances are a mix of DJ sets and live music. Established in 1964, the Diamond Ballroom is an allages venue featuring rock, country, hip hop

Known locally as “The Jones,” The Jones Assembly is a 1,600-seat modern restaurant, bar and music venue in Oklahoma City’s West Village. The space transforms from a restaurant by day to a lively concert venue by night, hosting national artists and weekly house music. Diverse Dining
GLOBAL CUISINE Beginning in 2018, the rest of the country began to take notice of Oklahoma City’s food scene thanks to Bon Appetit awarding Nonesuch the honorific of “Best New Restaurant in the U.S.” The Oklahoma City Thunder had already begun catching the national media spotlight, and Nonesuch’s triumph gave people another reason to notice OKC.
Truthfully, though, Oklahoma City has been a food city for decades, with restaurants dishing out food from dozens of ethnicities and nationalities. Following is a sampling of some of our city’s best dining spots representing five continents – sorry, Antarctica and Australia. More than 40 nations are represented in our dining scene, and if you include regionally specific cuisine (e.g., Sonora, Durango, Baja, etc.), that number expands to more than 50 regionally specific options.
67
ASIA AKAI Sushi. Located in the Wheeler District just south of downtown, this gorgeous restaurant was a hot spot from the day it opened. The decor is stunning, as is the food. A combination of classic rolls, modern Japanese cuisine and a phenomenal bar program, Akai is elevated Japanese dining. BAR SEN. The second Lao spot from James Beard finalist Chef Jeff Chanchaleune, Bar Sen is noodle bowls, fried chicken and brilliant cocktails. The glass noodle salad is the rock star of the restaurant, but so is the fried chicken. Formosa Street Food & Bar. Owner Ivan Wong changed his focus from Szechuan cuisine to his native Taiwanese, the first of its kind in OKC, when he opened Formosa. The beef noodle bowl and the spicy cold noodles are two of the best noodle bowls in the city. He also features wings, sizzling fish, basil popcorn chicken and dumplings, among other traditional favorites. Jamil’s Steakhouse. One of the few remaining Lebanese steakhouses in Oklahoma is located on Lincoln Blvd., just a couple miles north of the Capitol. Yes, you can get steaks, but they also serve smoked bologna, ribs, tabouli, hummus and cabbage rolls. They celebrated 60 years last year, making them an institution and an icon.
Rivière modern bahn mi
ZamZam Mediterranean Grill My Place Sip & Savor. Our newest Thai spot is also one of our best, but if you’re a late-night eater, find the Mob Thai’d truck. My Place is traditional Thai in an elevated style and lovely surroundings. The khao soi noodles and wagyu dishes are the must-haves, but the larb, pad thai and cocktails are all excellent. Rivière Modern Banh Mi. You can find several great pho joints in the Asian District, like Pho Cuong and VII Asian Bistro, but this Midtown spot has modern Vietnamese and what might be the only small-batch pho remaining in the metro. It checks all the boxes, plus a full bar, and the rotating specials are often the best reason to go. Sheesh Mahal. Most locals treat it like an Indian spot, and they do have some crossover, but the nihari on the menu is the giveaway that it’s a Pakistani restaurant. Everything they do is excellent, and the green masala butter chicken is one of the best things in OKC. ZamZam Mediterranean Grill. More Palestinian than Mediterranean, the Auto Alley location serves delicious Levantine specialties like shawarma, beef arayes, stuffed falafel and fattoush. They also serve some of the only grilled wings in the city.
68
CENTRAL AMERICA, MEXICO, AND INDIGENOUS CUISINE 39 Restaurant. Located in the First Americans Museum, the restaurant was named as an homage to the 39 Native nations associated with Oklahoma and features Indigenous and pre-Colombian food, with a few modern twists. Chefs Ben Hutton and Loretta Barrett Oden (an Emmy winner also) oversee a menu of bison, fish, corn-centric dishes, pozole, hominy stew and other delicious Indigenous dishes. Azteca Mexican Grill. With easy access off I-44 and warm, friendly service, this is the spot for when you have a group that wants just about every kind of Mexican food from traditional to TexMex. Café Kacao. Guatemalan food with a modern twist is the appeal. You’ll want to put your name on the list early or you’ll be standing outside in the crowd for hours, especially for peak brunch hours. It’s impossible to go wrong with this menu, and the full coffee service is stellar. Púchica Muchá Que Rico. Guatemalan food at its rustic best, including adobo chicken on the grill, garnachas, tamales and the best horchata in the metro. They open for lunch and dinner, and they’re tucked into a little neighborhood near downtown. Pupuseria Mi Chalateca. The little blue house on NW 23rd is where you’ll find some of the city’s best Salvadoran food, like pupusas, tamales de elote, pastelitos and plantains. The traditional breakfast is designed for farmers, so be prepared for leftovers, unless you’re a farmer.
Azteca Mexican grill
Café Kacao Taco Empire. This truck and brick-and-mortar are operated by a third-generation restaurateur, and the experience shows. The restaurant has a full bar if you’re looking for margaritas. You can get traditional Mexican food or dishes with a modern twist, like the quesabroso taco, a blue corn tortilla filled with your choice of protein, beans, avocado and cheese. Tacos y Baleadas Abigail. This truck-turnedrestaurant is the rare Honduran spot in OKC. Featuring traditional breakfast items, most notably baleadas and breakfast platters, the family-owned spot also offers some of our best red beans and rice and fried chicken. Trompudo’s Tacos. Drawing inspiration from Mexico City and Puebla, this south-side spot has al pastor straight from the trompo and real suadero tacos. They make taco sauces that pair with each protein, but don’t leave without trying the suadero. The frozen drinks at the bar are a local favorite, too.

AFRICA Plus254 – A Taste of Africa. It’s primarily Kenyan, and it’s located downtown in the Robinson Renaissance building, making it very convenient for a business lunch. Samosas, coconut beans and creamed spinach deserve your attention, as does the pilau with beef. Cous Cous Cafe. This is traditional Moroccan food served in a very casual environment. The French influence shows up in the baked goods, and while many of the items will be familiar to diners who love Mediterranean food, it would be a mistake not to get a tagine with cous cous.
cous cous Cafe Tayta Latin Cuisine
Naija Wife Kitchen. James Beard nominee Tahnee Francis learned to cook her husband’s native Nigerian cuisine after they met. She began cooking for family and friends, which led to a small spot in downtown OKC. After receiving such a positive response, she expanded it into a full counter-service Nigerian restaurant serving traditional dishes like suya, egusi, fufu and banga soup. Queen of Sheba. If there is a queen of African food in the metro, you’ll find her here. For more than 30 years, they have been serving injera, tibbs, wat and all the Ethiopian goodness you love. Here it’s incredibly easy for vegetarians and vegans to find options, too.
SOUTH AMERICA El Fogón de Edgar. This south-side Colombian restaurant has been slinging traditional favorites for decades, and you’ll want to start with the empanadas. Colombian empanadas are three-bite indulgences, especially when you ladle on the aji verde. Arroz con pollo and parrillada are the staples. Tayta Latin Cuisine. Located in the heart of downtown, this mostly Peruvian spot has live music on weekends, and the pisco sours are among the city’s best. Pollo a la brasa is the house specialty, along with the ceviches. The menu is 70 percent Peru, but you’ll find Panama, Cuba and Puerto Rico too.
sheesh mahal
EUROPE La Baguette Bistro. A local favorite for nearly 40 years, this French bistro is owned by two brothers who came to Oklahoma for love and stayed, hopefully for love. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner, and you’ll find the traditional favorites: crepes, frog legs, steak au poivre and baked treats. They have a stellar wine list and a market attached for things you need for your stay. Patrono. Although it’s not Italian-owned, this City Center Italian spot is one of the city’s favorite special occasion restaurants. Chef Jonathan Krell oversees a focused menu of starters, pastas and Italian-inspired entrees. The Italian-heavy wine list is curated to pair with the food, and a full bar produces stellar craft cocktails. Royal Bavaria. It’s German food in a biergarten setting, or you can choose the dining room. They make their own beer, but have a great list of German imports. The food is rustic and charming, including potato pancakes, potato soup, jagerbraten and schnitzel.

Brunch Like You Mean It
Café Kacao
Brunch is decadence: eggy, cheesy, bacony, full of carbs and often dusted with powdered sugar because why not. A top-tier brunch beverage must be just as glorious. Whether it’s a scrumptious coffee concoction, inventive mocktail or super-cool cocktail, run-of-the-mill is simply not how it’s done in OKC.
71
FEELING SWANKY? Lorena Southern Twist, a new addition to Midtown, is elevated (you guessed it!) Southern food like sharable pickled okra fritters, fried green tomatoes or a pimento cheese ball. For mains, try the chicken-fried rib eye, shrimp and smoked cheddar grits topped with poached eggs or fried oyster Benedict. Next door, sister restaurant Stella Modern Italian Cuisine is sleek, chic and delicious. Try the Stella Benedict, two poached eggs atop a prosciuttotopped mushroom polenta cake, all slathered in Hollandaise, one of many excellent eggy choices. Plenty of heartier, lunchier fare, too! Cheever’s Café has been an anchor of Uptown OKC for decades. Order spectacular salads if you must, you won’t feel deprived, but if a treat is in order, smoked brisket hash with sunny eggs and BBQ Hollandaise will make your soul sing.
Cheever’s CafE
EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING OKC’s Plaza District was made for a languid brunch. You’ll love Aurora (all day brunch!) for its knife & fork biscuit – Tilamook cheddar, sausage, egg and cream gravy, salted caramel cinnamon rolls and humble yet perfect potato cabbage hash. Saunter into The Jones Assembly, housed in a former Ford Motor Company assembly plant for a lazy, delectable brunch and one of their famous Frosé cocktails, a grownup slushy made of rosé, gin, lemon and strawberry and served frozen. Pair it with something hearty like the chilaquiles breakfast burrito, filled with chorizo, scrambled eggs, tortilla strips, avocado crema, pico and queso fresca. Be sure to build a post-brunch nap into your day plan.

Café Kacao is where the locals go. Coffee drinks here are brilliant and so are the cocktails and mocktails, like the La Casa Verde – rum, cantaloupe, lemon, mint and cucumber bitters. The Cuban omelette is a crowd pleaser – it’s stuffed with shole black beans and Monterrey jack cheese and topped with tender-crisp shredded beef and onions. The crème brulee lava French toast is brioche bread, with passion fruit sauce, fresh fruit and whipped cream. You literally can’t go wrong, so try something exciting!
VEGETARIAN, VEGAN AND GLUTEN-FREE FRIENDLY Red Cup. So much plant-based goodness in such a funky, artsy, cool little vegetarian café. Plus, brilliant gluten-free biscuits, fantastic scrambled tofu dishes, tender Johnnycakes (add-ins include blueberries, banana, apples and toasted pecans), OKC’s favorite vegetarian chili and house-made veggie burgers. Ask for a sunny egg on those last two!
Red Cup
Picasso Café is an anchor of the Paseo Arts District. After brunch (or before) you’ll want to roam the street’s galleries and retail. Fun fact: Picasso’s fried potato hash is technically selfcare! So is the garden Benedict, which we love because instead of an English muffin, it’s anchored by a toasty everything bagel topped with fresh mozzarella, arugula, heirloom tomatoes, two poached eggs and chipotle Hollandaise. A masterpiece!
DOWN HOME GOODNESS Head for Stockyards City and bring your appetite. Oklahoma’s oldest continually operating restaurant, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, is a beloved tradition. It doesn’t call what it serves ‘brunch,’ but you can get omelets, hot cakes and breakfast steaks (served with eggs, hashbrowns and toast or biscuit) from 6-11 a.m. every day and lunch or dinner steaks (served with salad, rolls and potato or vegetables) after that. Down the street, McClintock Saloon, with its spectacular, chandelier-studded Old West interior, offers a brunch appetizer called “basket of bacon.” Pair that with a Bloody Mary, followed by house-made fried chicken and waffles.

james Beard Recognized Chefs Since 2022, Oklahoma City’s culinary scene has seen a surge of recognition from the prestigious James Beard Foundation — with multiple nominations, several finalist nods and an American Classics and Best Chef Southwest win. Below are the Oklahoma City chefs recognized by the Beard Foundation judges, along with two beverage programs and one restaurant that have also earned nominations. Leading the way was Florence Jones, the founder and owner of the eponymously named Florence’s, who made history in 2022 as Oklahoma’s first James Beard Award winner under the American Classics category. In her 90s, Jones no longer works in the kitchen of her northeast-side spot, known for what she insists is “country cooking,” or what locals tend to call soul food by another name.
Andrew Black is the Best Chef Southwest 2023 for his work at Grey Sweater, a fine dining tasting menu restaurant in the historic Deep Deuce District. Black was a two-time semifinalist, once for Outstanding Chef in addition to his win. Grey Sweater’s sister restaurant Dougla Kitchen is next door, and the focus there is on the kind of Caribbean food that shaped Black’s palate as a child. The name comes from a term used in Trinidad to describe someone of mixed Desi and African heritage. It’s an homage to his grandmother Elizabeth, who inspired his culinary career. Dougla Kitchen is Chef Black returning to his roots and elevating the traditional food of his childhood. His other spot is Perle Mesta in the Skirvin Hilton downtown. The stunning interior offers diners a lovely backdrop for Perle Mesta’s breakfast through dinner services.
Tahnee Francis, a Best Chef Southwest nominee in 2025 for her Naija Wife Kitchen, learned to cook her husband’s native Nigerian food after the couple got together. With encouragement from friends and family, she upscaled to a fullblown, counter service Nigerian restaurant, serving traditional dishes like suya, egusi, fufu and banga soup. Francis is currently located right downtown, making her spot very convenient for business and leisure travelers staying in the urban core.
Jeff Chanchaleune is a three-time nominee and twotime finalist for Best Chef Southwest. Chanchaleune received nominations for his work at Ma Der Lao Kitchen. His family immigrated after the Vietnam War, and Chanchaleune has spent a large part of his career learning to make his native cuisine, while he was running Japanese restaurants. Ma Der is an anchor in the Plaza District, and shortly after landing on the Bon Appetit “50 Best New Restaurants” and “The List” from The New York Times, the James Beard judges came calling. Chanchaleune subsequently opened Bar Sen, a noodle house and cocktail bar adjacent to Ma Der, both serving traditional Lao cuisine with a modern twist or two.
Zach Hutton owned Scratch Kitchen & Cocktails in the historic Paseo Arts District when he received his Best Chef Southwest nomination. The restaurant featured Oklahoma-centric, rustic cuisine, and a supplier list that was 95 percent Oklahoma farms, ranches and other food producers. Hutton’s specialty is adding chef’s insights and techniques to classic Oklahoma country cuisine. He’s now working out of The Ice House in Edmond, and he’s still focused on elevating Oklahoma cuisine.
Zack Walters returned to his native Oklahoma during the COVID lockdown and promptly opened Sedalia’s Oyster & Seafood, an oyster bar similar in many ways to the local spots that dot the West Coast from Washington to California. Featuring fresh fish, raw and roasted oysters, some Bolivian influence via his wife and coowner, and a small bar program, Walters garnered a James Beard finalist nod for Best Chef Southwest in 2025.

Eric Smith is a classically trained chef whose fascination with Asian, French and modern American cuisine has made his The Crown and Crown Room into two of OKC’s favorite restaurants. His James Beard nomination in 2025 was long overdue, and his Crown Room private dinners are a multisensory, hysterically entertaining dining experience, not just dinner.
The Study. Certified sommelier Ian Bennett has been a fixture in OKC’s wine scene since moving here from Los Angeles more than a decade ago. His knowledge and experience have advanced our wine culture beyond what many expected, and so it was no surprise that his “wine pub,” as he prefers to call it, earned him an Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service nomination in 2024. Bennett invested in a state-of-the-art Cruvinet system when he opened The Study, and that has allowed him to offer more than 60 wines at a time by the glass, and the interior is designed in sections for bar-sitters, introverts, readers, board game fans and music lovers.
Garrett Hare is the executive chef of Nonesuch, the original fine dining tasting menu spot in Oklahoma City and Outstanding Restaurant finalist in 2025. The Midtown destination changed ownership in 2024, when Denver restaurateur and James Beard and Michelin star winner Kelly Whitaker (Id Est Hospitality Group) returned to his Oklahoma roots with the purchase. Hare has overseen the kitchen before and after the transition, and his team of chefs and bar professionals produce some of the most creative, delicious food and drinks in the metro.
Kim Dansereau. On the strength of then operating partner Dansereau’s palate and bar experience, FRIDA Southwest earned a nomination for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverage Program in 2023. The Paseo Arts District hotspot features a small but excellent wine list, a great bythe-glass program and solid cocktails. Dansereau has moved to Picasso Cafe, also in the Paseo, where she is once again creating a stellar beverage program.

The National is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, with 146 wellappointed rooms with convenient proximity to three restaurants and two bars, one of which occupies the former bank’s vault. This reimagined historical building even includes Lucchese Boots, PAINT Nail Bar, Drybar and a gift shop by Plenty Mercantile on the premises.
THE SKIRVIN HILTON The Skirvin Hilton, perfectly located in the hub of downtown OKC, is capital-G Glamorous. Guests here have been enveloped in a world of luxury since its debut in 1911. The beautifully restored hotel has seen a stream of famous world figures, NBA players, movie stars and oil barons as guests through the centuries. James Beard award-winning Chef Andrew Black helms the hotel’s brilliant Perle Mesta restaurant, an enchanting and impeccable dining experience that captures the spirit of its namesake.
