THE BACK STORY Edmond began as a crucial stop along the railway at the Summit train station in 1887. It turned into a township during the April 22, 1889, Land Run. Edmond is home to the first public schoolhouse, the 1889 Territorial School, and one of the first public institutions
of higher education in Oklahoma Territory, the Territorial Normal School, now the University of Central Oklahoma. The preservation of Edmond’s history can be found across our city through public art, WPA projects and at the Edmond History Museum.

Reynolds Modern Tourist Apartment Matthew Reynolds operated the Modern Tourist Apartments and a cafe on the northeast corner of 12th and Broadway in 1932.

Park it With 34 parks across the metro, green spaces pop up at every turn. These six parks have special features with fun activities to make a day of play. Bickham-Rudkin Park is in South Edmond with a dog park, an urban pollinator prairie and a fishing pond.
Stephenson Park is near the Edmond History Museum and includes a playground, basketball court and a covered amphitheater.

Mitch Park is a spacious recreational area in North Edmond with an accessible playground, pollinator gardens, pond, and an amphitheater. The park holds sports fields, a disc golf course, the Mathis Skate Park, primitive and paved trails. Hafer Park is centrally located next to Pelican Bay Aquatics Center, shopping and dining. Complete with multipurpose trails, a pond with flocks of geese and ducks, and inviting playgrounds. The Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park, on the corner of Route 66 and Coltrane, is opening soon. The 62-acre park will feature more than 60 sculptures, a children’s playground, dog park, pavilions and a Tall Grass Stage for concerts.
Arcadia Lake on Route 66 has equestrian trails, mountain biking, fishing, beach access and camping sites. The University of Central Oklahoma Boathouse on the northeast side of the lake has kayaks, canoes, standup paddleboards, and bikes for rent. Visit Edmond

Shannon Miller by Shan Gray, Shannon Miller Park by Edmond Library. From her Edmond roots, Shannon became the world’s most decorated gymnast. She won over 100 national and international competition medals, with over half of those being gold.

Proposal
Anna Beth grew up in Edmond and remembers seeing the Blue Hippo on Route 66. She would pass the Blue Hippo, and it always made her happy. She told her mom that she wanted to get engaged at the Blue Hippo. Anna Beth’s dream came true on August 13 on her two-year dating anniversary with her boyfriend, Dillon.
