You can come for the thrill of a lifetime with activities filled with excitement – or simply set up camp somewhere, do some fishing, and enjoy a gorgeous hike at your own pace. Yes, spring and summer are a great time to visit.
Then, when the air starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change, I find myself getting excited. In Choctaw Country, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to during the fall and winter seasons! Take a brisk (or long) hike through the stunning fall foliage, find some of the greatest hunting and fishing spots for miles around, or treat yourself during perfect camping temperatures to a spectacular view of the stars.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or a weekend adventure, our community members are here to welcome you with open arms and true southern hospitality.

Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Yeti. Skunk Ape. These are just a handful of the multitude of names for the elusive creature who haunts the untamed corners of our world. He is sometimes described as apelike and massive, or even fuzzy around the edges, as if slightly out of focus. To some, he’s not of this world and to others, he’s one of the “Old Ones.” A harbinger of danger, a multi-dimensional traveler, a symbol of freedom from cultural obligations and norms, inhuman, shapeshifter, monster and friend.
While the existence of Sasquatch hasn’t been proven with any amount of unanimous certainty, it hasn’t been disproven either. And for those who claim to have experienced their own encounters with the creature of legend, no amount of skepticism can waver their conviction in his presence.
Whether you’re a true believer or just Squatch-curious, there’s no denying the mystery of the remote foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains, full of misty apparitions, boggy moans and who-knowswhat in the distance. It’s a regular stop for renowned Bigfoot researchers, authors, TV and radio personalities, and podcast hosts. Home of the annual bigfoot festival, the wilderness of Southeastern Oklahoma is familiarly recognized as Squatch Country.

If you’ve never experienced a humbling encounter with the limitless black sky, free of light pollution and heavy with its seeming nearness, visiting these locations in Choctaw Country is a must. Most of our parks fall between 2-3 on the Bortle scale—a system that ranks the darkness of an area of sky from 1-9, darkest to lightest. This means you’ll have plenty of opportunities for breathtaking views, stellar photography and even more quiet contemplation and wonder.

There’s just something meditative about spending a day on the water trying to hook the perfect catch, and Choctaw Country is brimming with amazing locations to cast your cares away. Lower Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend State Park is a prime location for fly fishing, attracting anglers from miles around in search of the perfect trout. If you come back later in the season seeking bass, be sure to cast your line at Lake Texoma near Durant—one of the best lake locations in the United States for striper fishing.
