THE AGONY OF SELF-PRESERVATION

Editor’s Note : A GATEWAY TO WELLNESS

I first started running a couple years ago, when I was tasked with creating a performance running line for the company I was working for at the time. I had not really run since I was 15 years old, when I tried out for my high school soccer team. From my late twenties into my thirties, I had taken a detour from athletics and found myself completely immersed in the world of skateboarding and music. This detour led me to create a life for myself in Southern California, which in turn, brought me a wealth of knowledge in product design, brand design and creative direction. What started as an experiment to learn directly from athletes and their running experiences to develop better product solutions, swiftly became a love affair with the sport. I deeply enjoyed the physical, spiritual and mental benefits of going on long runs. As my body became stronger and my runs longer, it allowed my mind to drift and become clearer and more creative. It was on these long runs that OTIVM was born. Some of the struggles I faced from being an outsider to

the sport were finding brands I could genuinely relate to, given my background with counter and DIY subcultures. While I enjoyed some of the products and found them useful, I still felt a desire to connect with a brand on a deeper level. I created OTIVM as a bridge for connection, whether it’s across different genres of product, graphics and branding, or different subcultures and communities. OTIVM exists to connect a diverse culture of people and introduce them to new possibilities of leading an active lifestyle. My hope in doing so is that together, we can create a stronger equilibrium between mind, body and spirit.
