I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the 2025-26 Oshawa Generals OHL season. As always not only a welcome to the legions of returning fans, but for all of the new fans as well. Welcome to Gens Nation!!!

The large number of players that you will be seeing on the ice this season will be coming off back to back OHL championship finals appearances. A great accomplishment but we all know we fell short of our ultimate goal of winning the Robertson trophy and going to the Memorial Cup. The real success of this years team is to return to that level. Three years ago we finished in eighth place followed by a first place and fourth place regular season finishes respectively. The first-place finish and back-to-back finals appearances were the result of the building blocks being put in place seasons before and the team growing up together. Winning doesn’t happen by accident, and it must be done by doing things the right way.

The men in charge of that will be led by Mario Pouliot and his winning pedigree in junior hockey. Mario will push these players to places they may not have been before but trusting a coach that has won two Memorial Cups the reboot should move quickly. Mike Farrugia will be in his third season behind the bench, and they will be joined by newcomer Derrick Walser who most recently coached in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels. Derrick was part of the Peterborough Pete’s coaching staff that won the OHL championship and competed in the Memorial Cup in 2023.

The hockey landscape as we know it, is changing and the people to benefit the most will be you the fans and the players. Fans will get to see young players live that they may never have been able to see before. Players with NCAA commits that may have played in other leagues to preserve their eligibility are free to explore the OHL now before going to school. Players will have the opportunity to extend their playing careers and get the best of both worlds. I suspect by the end of this upcoming season we may have half of our players with NCAA commits. However, make no mistake the OHL/CHL will remain the industry leader in producing NHL draft picks. Look no further then our own Simon Wang and Owen Griffin who had their names called for the San Jose Sharks and the Columbus Blue Jackets respectively this past June in LA.

Now you must play your part and fill this building every night. Give these guys true home ice advantage and push them to be there best night in and night out. Go Gens Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AROUND THE OHL

AS OF MARCH 19TH

EAST DIVISION

PETERBOROUGH PETES

Peterborough has evolved out of their two-year rebuild with a hard-working and skillful group that has saw tremendous success this season with 37 wins and the ninth-best record in the league.

They have been led offensively by Adam Novotny for most of the season with 33 goals and 63 points, but depth scoring has come from many on the team, from Brennan Faulkner to Aiden Young to Matthew Soto to deadline acquisition Kieron Walton and many more.

Defense has been coming around too after its struggles early in the year and that has been with the help of local boy Easton Rye, who has been outstanding all year in goal as he leads the league in wins with 36 and is top-five in Save Percentage at .916.

A first-round matchup with the North Bay Battalion is all but set for Peterborough, but with three games remaining in each of their seasons and two points separating them from fourth and fifth in the Eastern Conference, home ice advantage is still up for grabs.

CENTRAL DIVISION

NIAGARA ICEDOGS

A season of high-and-lows aplenty for Niagara will still see them get some playoff hockey under their belts thanks in part to some tremendous seasons from top guns Riley Patterson and Ryan Roobroeck.

Patterson is up to 81 points and is top-five in goals with 38 while Roobroeck has also hit the 30-goal mark. Behind them, Ryerson Edgar, Ethan Czata and Hayden Reid continue to be nice complimentary pieces, but a lack of bottom-six depth is what has the club so low for goals.

Niagara has not gotten much help on the defensive side either, allowing the third-most goals in the Eastern Conference – a problem that has plagued them for what seems like all season.

The IceDogs just settled for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference as they are now five points back of the Kingston Frontenacs with two games left. This sets Niagara up for a first round matchup with the Central Division champion Barrie Colts.

MIDWEST DIVISION

OWENSOUND ATTACK

The past few months have been rough on the Attack as they once went on a stretch of eight wins in 36 games, but they appear to be finishing their year strong, taking six of their last ten.

Owen Sound’s offense is kicking again, led by Pierce Mbuyi with 12 points in his last ten to take over the team scoring lead. Harry Nansi has also gotten hot at times as he went on a nine-game point streak not long ago and Lenny Greenberg has also had a solid season on the back end.

Playoff matchups and seeding are far from set for Owen Sound, but they can finish no higher than sixth in the Western Conference. They sit in that spot for now but are also battling the Guelph Storm and Saginaw Spirit, who are both two points behind them.

With two games remaining, including a big one in Guelph against the Storm, the Attack hope to lock up the sixth seed. Should they do so, they would set up a first round series with either the Flint Firebirds or the Windsor Spitfires. Should Saginaw and Guelph win out and Owen Sound loses out, the Attack would fall to the eighth seed and play the Kitchener Rangers.

WEST DIVISION

SAULTSTE.MARIE GREYHOUNDS

It has been a successful season for the SOO out of their retool from last year, but they have cooled off before entering the playoffs with just four wins in ten games thanks to a couple of key injuries and the offense running a bit dry.

Brady Martin has had a difficult campaign due to his injuries sustained earlier in the year, but the Greyhounds fortunately got top defenseman Chase Reid back from one just in time for the playoffs. Reid was sidelined for 17 games due to an upper-body injury.

Even with some high-end talent being out and some of their weapons slumping, over-ager Marco Mignosa has led the SOO’s offense all season long. He has nine goals, 13 points in his last ten and has jumped to seventh in league scoring with 86 points.

As the Greyhounds prepare for a playoff duel with the London Knights, home ice advantage in the first round series is still up for debate. The two are separated by one point with London currently controlling fourth in the West at 83 and the SOO in fifth at 82.

GAME DAY PREVIEW

The Oshawa Generals get set for the final game of their 2025/26 regular season as they host their archrivals, the Peterborough Petes.

After a strong showing against the Ottawa 67’s Friday night with a 4-3 victory, the Gens hope to close out their season with two straight wins against East Division Opponents.

Onni Kalto did it all offensively in Friday’s victory with a natural hat trick and four total points, while Owen Griffin and Brooks Rogowski each tallied three points as well.

Peterborough, meanwhile, has hopes of doing damage in this year’s playoffs after a couple of rebuilding years with a talented and hard-working core led by Adam Novotny and Kieron Walton among others.

The Petes have already clinched the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 4-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs Friday night and will take on the North Bay Battalion in the first round of the playoffs.

Peterborough has the upper-hand in the season-series with four wins in seven games over Oshawa, but the Generals have taken the last two head-to-head – once on home ice 8-4, and also just over a week ago on the road 3-2.

In tonight’s season finale, keep an eye out for, Leo Laschon, who has been a solid two-way defender all year for Oshawa. The Gens’ tenth-round selection out of Pittsburgh, PA this past year has worked his way up in the d-pairings throughout the season thanks to his terrific staking and on-ice awareness.

For the Petes, look out for their captain Carson Cameron, who is a solid defender in his own right thanks to his fight both in the corners and defending the blue line. The Bobcaygeon, ON product and former first rounder of the Petes has tallied at least 20 points in his first three OHL seasons.

The Oshawa Generals defeated the Ottawa 67’s in a tightly contested 4-3 game to salvage both the home-and-home and the season series with their division rivals.

The Generals took to the ice dawning the winning jersey designs from the CHL Jersey Contest presented by Real Canadian Superstore. The jerseys will be auctioned off with 100% of proceeds going to President’s Choice Children’s Charity to help feed one million kids each year.

Porter Byrd-Leitner and Artem Frolov drew back into the lineup and Isaac Gravelle made his long-awaited return to the crease after 35 games. After allowing just one goal Wednesday afternoon, Ryder Fetterolf got back between the pipes for Ottawa.

Unlike two days ago, it was Oshawa turning up the heat early with 13 of the game’s first 16 shots, but Fetterolf came up with some big saves for his team to keep it scoreless after a physical first period.

The Gens did start the second with a power play and capitalized on it for the icebreaker with Onni Kalto one-touching Brooks Rogowski’s cross-ice feed past Fetterolf on the rush for his first of three on the night. The 67’s would quickly respond, however, with Frankie Marrelli getting open and wiring a perfect shot upstairs on Gravelle from out high. Just 1:37 after that, Kalto doubled down to reclaim the lead for Oshawa, finishing Owen Griffin’s rebound shot in the crease.

After both sides went back-and-forth with power plays throughout the middle frame, Ottawa tied it with 11.1 seconds left in the period after Jasper Kuhta picked off a cross-ice feed out of mid-air for a short-handed breakaway, and he tucked it past Gravelle’s left pad.

After the late tying goal in the dying seconds of period two, both teams came out flying to start the third – exchanging chances while showing their physical sides both during plays and after whistles.

With another power play marker less than eight minutes in, Onni Kalto sent the hats flying with this third of the game as he gained the zone and roofed it over Fetterolf’s glove to give the Gens their third lead.

Oshawa was in tough for closing out a strong 67’s squad late, but they would add to their lead with over three minutes left thanks to Kalto returning the favor to Rogowski from earlier with a great feed and Rogowski put it past Fetterolf to ice it.

Teddy Spitznagel would net his first OHL goal and draw Ottawa within one with less than 30 seconds left, but it would not be enough for a late comeback as the Generals shut the door and held on tight for the victory.

It was a chippy game that carried over from the first of the doubleheader on Wednesday, but the Gens showed up right from the start and knocked off the league’s third-best team in Ottawa for their first and only win against them on the season.

Onni Kalto led the way with his first OHL hat trick that got him to the 20-goal mark, and he finished his fantastic night with four points total. However, Isaac Gravelle was the game’s hardest worker as he stopped 22 of 25 shots en route to his first victory of the season.

The 67’s will head back to the nation’s capital for one last game against their first-round opponents the Kingston Frontenacs before the real battle begins between the two in next week’s playoffs.
