WELCOME TO OSF’S 2024 SEASON—A JOURNEY OF LOVE, LEGACY, AND HUMAN CONNECTION Since returning to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, one sentiment continues to run through my mind: “I’m home.” Home is where you are welcomed back with open arms. Home is where you are free to fall over laughing or well up with tears. Home is where you hear the best stories. Now, I’m thrilled to welcome you back home too. It’s no secret that the 2024 Season is a personification of the perseverance, dedication, and commitment of our community. When founder Angus L. Bowmer created OSF in 1935, he did so with the vision of passing classics on to future generations. In 2024, we’re carrying on his legacy starting with the most illustrious tragedy of all time, Macbeth. It’s a dark lion of a play about the perils of unchecked ambition and consequences of greed, apt lessons for modern society. We also welcome you to the table of a seductive and quick-witted fictional meeting between William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe in a bold new play entitled Born with Teeth. But that’s not all! For music lovers like me, get ready for Lizard Boy, a musical with so much heart that it took home six San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards. Also in June, out on the magnificent Allen Elizabethan Theatre, we will be humming with music, wit, and the wonders of the human heart in the wildly hilarious Much Ado About Nothing and a captivating new adaptation of the beloved classic Gothic romance novel Jane Eyre.

In July we invite you on an intense movement-based journey with Shakespeare’s political tragedy Coriolanus, presented in a new translation that illuminates the uncannily resonant themes of a fragile democracy in an election season, featuring a cast of female and non-binary performers. And finally, throughout the season we are offering a series of top-notch solo shows curated and performed by some of your OSF favorites. We also celebrate the return of our community engagement programs, educational tours, and the revitalization of OSF’s School Visit Program, which boasts an indelible legacy of introducing students to Shakespeare’s plays by bringing teaching artists into schools. Our plan for the season is mighty, but then again, so are all of you. To the OSF community, welcome home.

MARCH 19 – OCTOBER 12, 2024 ANGUS BOWMER THEATRE

BLOOD WILL HAVE BLOOD In this powerful exploration of fate, an unexpected prophecy sends Scottish general Macbeth on a feverish and murderous quest to become king. With startlingly beautiful language, Shakespeare’s revered tragedy reveals the underbelly of ambition in a world steeped in powermongering, war, and magic. This muscular, modern production— an ensemble-based showcase for OSF’s acting company—is directed by former OSF Associate Artistic Director Evren Odcikin (unseen, 2022) and plays all season in the Angus Bowmer Theatre.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Evren Odcikin’s incisive directing and Jon Rua’s aggressive choreography won’t shy away from the horror of this ominous story. A cast of veteran OSF actors bring their skills to one of Shakespeare’s most thrilling stories, filled with lines and soliloquies that have infused the English language with familiar phrases for centuries.

MARCH 20 – OCTOBER 13, 2024 ANGUS BOWMER THEATRE

MADMEN LIKE US REINVENT THE WORLD William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe are two of the greatest writers of their time. If only they’d stop bickering long enough to pick up a quill. In this razor-sharp imagined encounter by Liz Duffy Adams, the two men go head-to-head, fighting, flirting, and festering in the back room of a pub while attempting to collaborate on a play cycle. Set against the backdrop of an aging ruler, an oppressive police state, and the constant threat of spies, Born with Teeth is a high-stakes dramatization of history that remarkably mirrors the present day. Don’t miss this sharp, sexy, dark comedy coming to life on the Angus Bowmer stage.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Born with Teeth was inspired by a recent study finding that Shakespeare’s Henry VI plays bear the marks of a collaboration with his celebrated contemporary, Christopher Marlowe. In this play, experience a seldom-seen view of Shakespeare: as a young and hungry playwright, overshadowed by his much more famous colleague.

MARCH 21 – MAY 4, 2024 THOMAS THEATRE

A LYRICAL, FEARLESS, AND DEEPLY PERSONAL ONE-PERSON SHOW Internationally renowned actor and Shakespeare scholar Lisa Wolpe has arguably played more of the Bard’s male roles than any woman in history. From cross-gender exploration to the unforgettable story of her life, Lisa triumphantly illustrates that Shakespeare’s insight into the human condition is as relevant as ever.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Playwright Lisa Wolpe weaves Shakespeare’s monologues with stories of her family’s traumatic past. This one-person show is a quest for gender equality and women’s rights.

MARCH 22 – MAY 12, 2024 THOMAS THEATRE

ONE BLACK MAN’S RECKONING WITH LEGACY AND RELIGION In this one-man comedy, Rodney Gardiner tries to abandon God despite his deeply Christian roots. For this undocumented Black boy growing up in tumultuous 1980s Miami, racial unrest, an immigration crisis, and the drug war is just another Tuesday. Smote This is an entertaining web of stories and tangents, and OSF is delighted to welcome back Rodney Gardiner, who has thrilled our audiences for years in everything from musicals to Shakespeare.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: In a show that began in comedy clubs and evolved into a theatrical experience, actor Rodney Gardiner tells stories of his family’s often difficult journey through the 1980s—a production that will delight audiences of all ages. Smote This takes a humorous, affectionate, and honest look at how religion is woven into Black culture— and the risks of challenging it.

THE WOMEN OF SHAKESPEARE— FROM AN INSIDER In this witty, insightful, and revealing onewoman show, actress Robin Goodrin Nordli draws from her experiences of performing in 61 productions of 30 plays by William Shakespeare. From the innocent virgins of her past to the vindictive villains of her present, Robin explores her own life through the prism of her relationship with Shakespeare’s women.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Robin Goodrin Nordli’s effervescent personality will be front and center in this show about her experiences with Shakespeare’s plays—and how they resonated with her own life. Virgins to Villains: My Journey with Shakespeare’s Women is a love letter to Ashland, repertory theatre, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

JUNE 11 – OCTOBER 12, 2024 THOMAS THEATRE

AN INDIE-ROCK MUSICAL LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE Trevor has become a myth in his hometown: a lonesome outsider whose skin turned green and scaly after a childhood encounter with a dragon. Now he leaves his house only once a year, on Monsterfest, the anniversary of the incident—and that’s tonight. Out on a first date with a new crush, Cary, he meets a fellow dragon survivor who fears the dragons have returned and begs Trevor to help fight them. Can Trevor accept who he is and save his city … and his first date? This funny, quirky, heartbreaking musical, winner of six San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards and fresh from its 2023 Off-Broadway run, will delight audiences in our intimate Thomas Theatre.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: This funny, sexy, queer musical has gained legions of fans during its journey from Seattle Rep to the UK to OffBroadway and beyond. It’s a tour de force: The three amazing actors in this production not only collaborated on the development of this musical, they also play all the instruments onstage.

FRAGILE DEMOCRACY AND TREACHEROUS ALLIANCES When civil unrest wracks Rome as the famine-ravaged underclass battle the ruling elite, a war hero steps into the spotlight to serve his nation—only to turn on it and seek its overthrow. Shakespeare’s rarely produced tragedy comes to visceral life in OSF’s Thomas Theatre, helmed by visionary director and OSF Associate Artistic Director Rosa Joshi in a powerful, movement-focused production featuring a cast of female and non-binary actors. Sean San José’s modern translation brings the story to the forefront, illuminating Shakespeare’s themes of ambition and delicate democracy that will particularly resonate during an election year.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Director Rosa Joshi, who also helmed OSF’s Henry V, Bring Down the House, and King John, specializes in strongly choreographed productions that reveal the heart of the story with crystal-clear dialogue and movement. Sean San José’s Play On translation preserves the poetry and complexity of Shakespeare’s language while making the story more immediate and contemporary.

JULY 31 – SEPTEMBER 15, 2024 THOMAS THEATRE

AN IMMIGRANT BETWEEN TWO WORLDS This one-man show tells a true story of the journey a young man takes to find belonging in two worlds divided. Using multilingual dialogue, traditional Iranian music, and American pop culture, OSF fan favorite Barzin Akhavan (Oklahoma!, Water by the Spoonful) brings his irrepressible energy back to OSF.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: Barzin Akhavan’s “coming to America” story is funny, touching, enlightening, and full to the brim with ’80s and ’90s pop culture. With elements of freestyle performance and improv, no two performances will be exactly alike.

“THOU AND I ARE TOO WISE TO WOO PEACEABLY” Romance, wit, and mistaken identities fuel this new staging of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy of tricks! Don Pedro’s army has just returned home victorious after the war. Love is in the air, even as two of history’s most tumultuous couples—Benedick and Beatrice, and Claudio and Hero—volley hilarious quips and damning accusations back and forth. Will the truth win in this mischievous game of love? Find out in this dazzling, music-filled production directed by Miriam A. Laube, who brings her 17 seasons of OSF experience to this Shakespeare favorite, lighting up the Allen Elizabethan Theatre all summer.

“I AM NO BIRD; AND NO NET ENSNARES ME” One of the most beloved heroines in literary history shines bright in this adaptation by Elizabeth Williamson. Orphaned as a child and raised by cruel relatives and cold schoolmasters, Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as an adult: working as a governess on a remote estate. But as she slowly falls in love with her moody employer, she discovers that he—and his home—are surrounded by dark secrets. With only her resilience and wits to guide her, how will Jane save her chance for happiness? This Gothic masterpiece is directed by Dawn Monique Williams, who helmed our lush 2023 staging of Twelfth Night.

WHAT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW: This new adaptation centers on Jane’s experiences in Mr. Rochester’s eerie house—part romance, part thriller, with a southern Gothic touch. Director Dawn Monique Williams—who has had two spectacular shows in our outdoor Elizabethan Theatre with The Merry Wives of Windsor and Twelfth Night—will team up with a cast of beloved OSF actors for a thoroughly entertaining night in our flagship theatre.

Mobility assistance, ADA seating, and accommodations for service animals are available for all performances. Closed Captioning and Audio Description are available on a limited basis for all performances except previews, with 2 weeks advance notice preferred. Please request these accommodations with your ticket purchase. As always, we will try to accommodate Access requests on shorter notice.

Assistive Listening Devices are available for all performances at the Access Booths in the lobbies on a first-come, first-served basis.

ASL+ Weekends provide all accessibility services, with special emphasis on ASL-interpreted performances, in all three theatres. ASL+ Weekends in 2024 will be April 26–28, June 28–30, July 26–28, and September 13–15 Please request seating in the ASL interpretation section by contacting Access Services via email at accessforall@osfashland.org.

Season Ticket Insurance ($40) offers the options of a refund or an exchange without fees up until the day Stage before the Stage performance. A one-time purchase of Season Ticket Insurance The Comedy the season, but insurance covers all ticket changes throughout of Errors is not retroactive and must be purchased when you buy your tickets. Insurance is not refundable, and cannot be applied toward purchases for digital productions. Note: OSF members Sustainer level and above receive complimentary Season Ticket Insurance.

EXCHANGES 2024 tickets may be exchanged up until the day before a performance, with a $15 per ticket fee (fee is waived if you have Season Ticket Insurance; see above). If you have not chosen a date to exchange into, we will issue you an Exchange Voucher that may be redeemed for a performance up until October 31, 2024. Tickets may be donated up to the day of the performance. There are no refunds unless a performance is canceled by OSF, unless you have Season Ticket Insurance. No refunds or exchanges on day of show, promotions, benefit events, or special offers.
