The little schoolgirl who scampered off the bus and tossed aside her backpack to eagerly help in her family’s dairy and cheese plant has now joined the company’s owner partnership
“It feels the same,” said Roseanne Crave, who heads sales and marketing for Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese “I feel great pride being part of the family business I continue to lear n something every day ”
The youngest child and only daughter of George and Debbie Crave, Crave has watched the company grow into an award-winning and wellregarded cheesemaking operation in Waterloo, a small community in southeaster n W isconsin
“I vaguely remember the groundbreaking of our cheese factory in 2001 when I was 4,” she said “Either I remember it or I’ve seen photos when I was in kindergarten
“I went from the bus to the cheese factory and I would either be in my parents’ office coloring, or other times I would help in the plant ”
The dairy and cheese factory straddle the two-lane Torpy Road northwest of Waterloo, whose population numbered 3,678 in the 2020 census Growing up, Crave participated in many activities that embraced the rural lifestyle
“I had a great childhood,” she said
ear ning certification in environmental studies
The Crave family has spent years planning for the eventual retirement of co-founders George and Debbie Crave Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese was founded in 2002 by the Crave family to extend their secondgeneration dairy farming roots into value-added cheesemaking The business includes Crave’s uncles and cousins in addition to her immediate family
Since then, the company has become known for its award-winning cheeses and its strong culture of care for its animals, land, employees and customers

In the national youth development program 4-H, Crave fondly remembers helping younger members with their fair projects and giving many a cow a bath
“I always enjoyed working with the show cows,” she said “My brother Patrick and I were kind of the show people in the family ”
In high school, Crave entertained the idea of becoming a science teacher someday, but after two years studying education, Crave’s attention tur ned back to the family business
“I don’t know when the specific moment was,” she said “But I thought, what am I doing when we have a great family business at home I already know a lot about it Why wouldn’t I want to pursue that full time?
“There was no pressure,” Crave said “Both of my brothers were working in the business, but I never felt any pressure ”
Crave tur ned her studies into a field where she believed she could best contribute to Crave Brothers She graduated from the University of W isconsin-Madison in 2020 with a degree in life sciences communication,
“As part of the second generation now joining the owner p a r t n e r s h i p , R o s e a n n e b r i n g s a p a s
relationship-building and continuing the Crave family legacy,” the company said in announcing her new position on the ownership team “She has helped shape the company’s marketing strategy, built lasting connections with retail partners and supported team initiatives that reflect Crave Brothers’ values of sustainability, innovation and people first ”
“Roseanne brings energy, vision and a deep respect for the values that define who we are,” said Managing Partner Mark Crave “Her voice at the owner partnership table will help guide our future while staying true to our long-standing commitment

community ”
Over its first 25 years in business, Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese continues to innovate to not only make its beloved line of cheeses, but to improve operations – from solar-powered heating for the cows in winter to regenerative farming for crops carefully mixed for its herds to an anaerobic digestion system that generates enough electricity to power the farm, cheese factory and area homes
While the company continues to discuss how to get its products into Mexico, given the shelf life of cheese, Roseanne Crave has her eyes on getting new packaging for its fresh mozzarella and mascarpone to market
“It’s similar to the old ones, but richer,” she said “They look elegant
“The mozzarella label has the cheese shapes because not everyone knows what fresh mozzarella is, so now they have a better visual ”
And in case you’re curious, after spending nearly her entire life centered on Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese – traveling to trade shows and conducting buyer tour groups at its facilities to attract new business –Crave succinctly answers the question of whether she gets tired of cheese
“No ”

“I feel great pride being part of the family business. I continue to learn something ever y day.”
