NEW HAVEN PILGRIMAGE

Father McGivney's Tomb (5 Hillhouse Avenue)

A special place of prayer and pilgrimage is the sarcophagus where the bodily remains of Father McGivney are entombed, near the entrance of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven. Knights and families from many parts of the world, as well as visitors from New Haven and beyond, come to St. Mary’s to pay tribute to Father McGivney in the church where he founded the Order in 1882. They recite the prayer for canonization and thank God for favors received through the intercession of the holy priest.

The mortal remains of Father McGivney were reverently placed in the polished granite sarcophagus on March 29, 1982, the centennial of the founding of the Knights of Columbus. The remains had been exhumed from the McGivney family plot in his

hometown of Waterbury, where his parents and some of his siblings are still buried in Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

International Headquarters (1 Columbus Plaza)

From the church, walk a few blocks to the plaza outside the Order’s international headquarters, where a tableau of three bronze figures tells the story behind the founding of the Knights of Columbus. Father McGivney is shown welcoming a widow and her children who seek help from the compassionate priest as the Protector of Christian Family Life.

The headquarters is a 23-story office building of distinctive brickwork and four exterior towers symbolizing the Knights’ principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Here the daily work of the Order is conducted in

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED MICHAEL MCGIVNEY

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

various departments: fraternal mission, insurance, underwriting, investments, communications, technology, and every other section that a modern international company requires. As a place of business, the building is open to invited visitors only.

In the Center is located the McGivney Gallery and the Reliquary Room. Among the first- and second-class relics on display are a fragment of bone and the cassock Father McGivney was buried in and other priestly garments and items he regularly used before his death Aug. 14, 1890. The Gallery features grade-school and seminary photos, devotional items and newspaper clippings from his days in New Haven.

You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!

The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

Hello Brothers in Christ. This is Ty Tyjewski, your Cleveland Diocesan COR Director. I hope this finds all of you well, and enjoying your Summer with Family and friends! As some of you may be aware, our State Council returned home earlier this month from the Supreme Convention. Ohio was one of the States that earned the prestigious “Circle of Honor” Award, where once again, Ohio led the charge of Excellence in overall Growth across our entire State.

Congratulations to Immediate Past State Deputy Jeff Killiany, The State Council, and all of YOU for your efforts in recruiting and growing our Order!

At the Supreme Convention, the attendees from every State were greeted with a video address from none other than His Holiness, our Supreme Pontiff, Poe Leo the XIV! In his message, His holiness shared that this years theme is “Herolds of Hope”. He later expressed His profound gratitude for the K of C for “Gathering and encouraging Men into Prayer, Formation, and Service”. Brother Knights, Prayer and Formation are at the very Heart of COR; (Every pun intended!)

Speaking of Prayer and Formation, below are examples from www.kofc.org/ COR, showing how these 2 principles can be

COR CORNER

utilized for different COR meetings:

Cor: Prayer Centered #1 –Rosary (60 min)

1. Fraternity: Coffee & donuts with table conversation

2. Formation: Read and discuss “Praying the Rosary”** (10-15 min)

3. Prayer: Scriptural Rosary** with group prayer intentions (20 min)

Cor: Prayer Centered #2 –Holy Hr. (60-90 min)

1. Fraternity: Coffee & donuts with table conversation

2. Formation: Read and discuss “Prayer Time”** (10-15 min)

3. Prayer: Adoration or prayer in church (30-60 min)

Cor: Formation Centered #1 – Into the Breach (ITB) (60-90 min)

1. Fraternity: Coffee and Donuts + Small group conversation on ITB

2. Formation: Into the Breach** - watch video and discussion questions

3. Prayer: Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Cor: Formation Centered #2 - Patris Corde book discussion (60-90 min)

1. Fraternity: Coffee and Donuts + Small group conversation on ITB

2. Formation: Patris Corde** – read and discuss questions

3. Prayer: Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy

As you can see, the Structure of a Prayer-centered, and a Formation-centered COR meeting is already explained for us. We always encourage that every COR meeting can be opened and concluded with prayer and also, we suggest to set aside time for open sharing and discussion, to encourage Brotherhood and foster growth in our Faith.

Lastly, for those Councils currently having COR meetings, please make sure that your Council EFF Director has registered on the Supreme Website. This enables our Worthy State COR Director and the Diocesan Directors to track how many Councils are having COR meetings, and also to track our progress towards our Fraternal Goal. As of now, the Cleveland Diocese currently has 8 councils doing COR, with our Brothers from St. Mary in Chardon and Fr. Maruskan Council in Stowe soon to follow! Here is the Link to register your Council’s EFF Director: https:// info.kofc.org/EFFOnboarding-LP.html That’s all for this month Brothers. Stay cool in this August heat, and please remember , if I can answer any questions, or assist in any way, please feel free to reach out to me at any time, at kofcclevelandeff@gmail.com, or (440) 867-4503. Thank you and Vivat Jesus!

The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose memorial the Church celebrates on September 15.

STATE OFFICER REPORT

We are entering the third month of the fraternal year and getting ready to close on the first quarter. Have your councils put together their plans and budgets for 2025-2026? Our your growth plans ready and include inperson, live Exemplifications? Have you heard about Cor and how it can help you grow in your faith and bring men to our Order? There are so many things that as leaders in the Knights of Columbus that we have to take into consideration. This is our passion to growth in our faith and to put that faith into action.

August was an exciting and busy month again. It started out with the State Campout down in Marengo, OH just outside of the Cleveland Diocese. Although Kathy and I could not attend since she had COVID and was selfquarantined, I did get to go down and participate in the golf outing. It was a great time and I look forward to attending next year as the Campout will return to Mercer County Fairgrounds.

Kathy and I joined our fellow state officers at the 143rd Annual Supreme Convention in Washington DC this year. Our delegate from the Cleveland Diocese (Caucus Area 3) was David Bowling Jr from Windermere Council 2726. I am proud to say that David performed his duties as a delegate to the best of his ability. Also from the Cleveland Diocese included our District Master, Brandon Robinson, and Windermere Council 2726 Financial Secretary, Kelly Statham. Thank you, Brothers, for coming to DC and being part of the Ohio delegation. A big congratulations from the CLE to Saint Joseph Council 11370 in Maumee which is in the Toledo Diocese. The council was selected as the International Community Program of the Year and was presented their award at the Supreme Convention.

Their program is documented in the Buckeye Bulletin but here is the short version.

Off the Streets Toledo was founded in 2021 to help both individuals and families move from homelessness to stable housing. Since its launch, more than 1,000 men, women and children have moved into safe, dignified homes thanks to the council’s efforts. Council members meet with those in need, provide security deposits, manage warehouse inventory, deliver furniture, appliances, and other material needs, pray with recipients and offer them a Bible and crucifix as a sign of faith and encouragementmore than 175 crucifixes hang on the walls of participating families thanks to this effort. In addition, the council hosts multiple fundraising activities to provide ongoing support to the initiative.

This is why you report your programs to the state. You never know when there is something that your council is doing that could have potential impact in other councils and regions around the world.

Some districts held meetings and installation of officers during the month. Thank you to all the District Deputies out there that help guide and mentor our councils. They are the unsung heroes and will always be there for you. We have a candidate for District Deputy in District #23. Hopefully, we will be able to make the journey out there to see the councils in September and October. I apologize for the delay but this has been a challenge to find the right person for this role.

Congratulations to all the Star

Councils in the Cleveland Diocese as well as the McGivney, Founders, and Columbian Award winners. Again and again, you put your faith into action. Your awards will be shipped to your current District Deputy over the next couple of months. So, please be patient as we are on Supreme’s time on the delivery of these awards.

My fellow members of the Bishop’s Brunch Committee will get together in September to start the preparations for the 2026 Brunch. It is so good to see some many Knights and their councils participating in this event. More info to come.

The Diocesan Team, District Deputies, and our Field/General Agents will be getting together on Friday, September 5th to discuss our plans for district and diocesan wide Fraternal Benefit Events.

We need more Exemplification Teams here in the Diocese. There is no reason why your council cannot have a team available. All you need is four to five men that are able to read and present. We recommend that you find current lectors as they already have experience. If you need help with a team, ask your DD or contact Teran or Jim.

Finally, I hope to see some of you on the golf courses this month as many councils have outings. Fall is a great time for golf as it is just the right temperature for me to go looking for my shots that went far left or right.

Any questions, concerns, or just to chat, give me a call. I would love to hear all that you are doing for our Order.

As September begins, I can hear "Are you ready for some football?" ringing in my ears. Hopefully your Council is in full swing selling your Football Crazr tickets.

Last month we did a great job in bringing in new members into the order and our Diocese. We were only three members out of first place in the State.

I would like to share, when State or Supreme assigns an eMember Prospect to your Council we do our best to match the Prospect to a Council based on many factors especially if the member attends your Parish. We do make mistakes or the Prospect may not be a good fit.

Please contact your District Deputy and myself as soon as possible and we will reassign the Prospect and they will no longer show up on your Prospect Tab in Member Management. I ask, please do not reject the Prospect and once notified, I will reassign the Prospect. This will allow the Prospect to be

GROWTH REPORT

reassigned and available to another Council's Prospect tab. If you have any questions, please feel free in reaching out to me.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances, Councils please do not expend any further energy; If the Council has made a good faith effort in contacting the eMember Prospect, after 30 days please notify your District Deputy and myself and I will remove the eMember from your Council Prospect tab.

If planning a membership drive in October, please place your order now.

Reflect

In 2021, Pope Francis established the celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In the U.S., we observe this celebration in September, joining the Church’s efforts to highlight the value and importance of grandparents and the elderly in our families and in society.

While the elderly have traditionally held places of honor in various cultures, today, elderly members of our families and communities often live lives marked by isolation and loneliness. Rather than being a beloved and integral part of a family, they are too often forgotten or overlooked. In the most tragic circumstances, some even seek to end their own lives through assisted suicide so as not to be a burden to their loved ones. Pope Francis has described this shift as a “throwaway culture” in which the weakest are neglected or worse when they are no longer of interest or “use.”

As persons made in the image and likeness of God, we possess an infinite dignity that can never be compromised by age or ability. This truth must guide each of us in our responsibility to lovingly accompany those who are in greater need of our time, care, and attention as they face their later years. Such accompaniment is of particular importance as they near the end of their lives, often enduring great sufferings as they prepare for their entrance to eternal life.

May each of us hear and respond to the plea of the elderly entrusted to our care: “Do not cast me aside in my old age; as my strength fails, do not forsake me” (Psalm 71:9).

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Fraternal Year for the Greater Cleveland Chapter.

My name is Jim Maslach. I am your new Chapter President. I want to thank our Immediate Past Chapter President, Teran Taggart, for his leadership and his dedication to the Knights of Columbus. I also would like to thank my brother Knights for having the confidence to put me in this position to help lead our Chapter and the Knights of Columbus in the Cleveland Diocese. Finally, thank you to my wife, Kathy, for her continued understanding and inspiration for all that I do.

My fellow officers include Tom Donvan as Vice President from Council 15901, Martin Steward as Secretary from Council 2643, the newbie, Patrick Graham as Treasurer from Council 4130, our long time Warden, Frank Carangio is back, and we have trustees Teran Taggart and John McQuillen. I will be looking for a 3rd Trustee.

This plans to be an exciting year for the Chapter as we close some doors and open others. We are planning some familiar events for the year so mark your calendars.

First, coming up in October is our Annual Columbus Day Dinner on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at Council 4130’s Hall. The doors will open at 4:00 PM for social with dinner starting around 4:30

PM. There will be a short program as well that will inspire you and, hopefully, provide some insight into Christopher Columbus and the Knights of Columbus. The cost will be $35/person. The menu is being finalized.

Other dates for you to put on your calendars include:

• 11/14: Memorial Service

• 12/12: Christmas Party

• 1/23: Clergy Appreciation Dinner

• 4/26: Nun’s and Ladies Dinner

There will be more information on those events as we get closer. We are also looking to plan some other events.

Is your council a member of the chapter? Probably not as only 20 councils are on the books as members. However, I would like to personally invite ALL councils in the Cleveland Diocese to join the chapter on a provincial basis. Come to our meetings, bring some new ideas, let us all energize the Knights here in North East Ohio.

There are a couple of challenges for the Chapter in 2025-2026 as well. First, all chapter meetings will be made available via Zoom. So, if you cannot join us inperson, please log in and participate. We would love to see you. Second, there is a need from more Exemplifications of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. One of the items the officers are

discussing is hosting an Exemplification prior to the meeting. Traditionally, we have done the Rosary. However, we believe that we can do both. More info to come on that but keep your eyes open to for it on the schedule. Third, a new project has been brought to our attention. “Build-A-Bed” has been around for some time and there are many councils that already participate. The Chapter is in an unique position to be centrally located and close to downtown Cleveland where many of these beds can be used. We are gathering our info, but hope to have a plan maybe this Fall but more likely in the Spring.

There is one thing that you do not see on the calendar for 2025-2026 and that is Rainbow Camp. The Chapter has been involved with Rainbow Camp since Parmadale closed up many years ago. Due to some issues and concerns between the management at Rainbow Camp and the Chapter Officers, the Chapter will not be hosting a Knights Day at the camp. More information will be at the meeting, but for now, this is an opportunity for us to reach out to others in the community.

Our next meeting is Friday, September 12 with Rosary at 7PM and the meeting to follow at 7:30 PM. I am looking forward to an exciting and faith growing year!
