With Early Detection, We Can Win the Battle Against Breast Cancer By Dr. Tejal Patel It’s October, and pink is popping up on all sorts of apparel – from T-shirts to sports uniforms – as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

survival rate is 99 percent. That number drops to 24 percent, however, when discovered in the distant, or later, stages.

At the Breast Care Center of Osceola Regional Medical Center, where I serve as the diagnostic imaging specialist, it’s our year-round job to highlight the importance of testing and early detection.

So, how can you best guard against breast cancer? Start by talking to your doctor to determine which screening procedure is right for you. For women 20 to 39, a clinical exam every few years will usually suffice. After that age, extra precaution is needed.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 40,000 U.S. women died in 2013 from breast cancer, and 1 in 8 will be diagnosed with it at some point. Having a first-degree relative, such as a mother or sister, with the disease can double a woman's risk of breast cancer. But it’s also important to note that 85 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.

For women 40 and over, most experts recommend an annual mammogram, one of the many diagnostic procedures – including MRI-guided biopsy and state-of-theart, highly detailed “3T MRI” – that can be performed at the Breast Care Center. These tools have significantly improved early detection, since they can detect lesions as small as 2 to 3 millimeters in diameter.

The good news is that improvements in treatment and early detection have caused mortality rates to fall significantly since 1990. The key is diagnosing the disease before it’s too late. Therefore, self-exams and routine medical care should go hand in hand – especially for middle-aged women with elevated risk factors such as family history or increased breast density.

Doctors and nurses at our all-inone facility are committed to the prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast disease through compassionate, coordinated care.

Self-exams should be conducted at the same time each month. Be on the lookout for such things as breast swelling, dimpling, skin irritation or abnormal lumps. Also alert your doctor if you see any of the following nipple symptoms: pain, retraction, redness, thickening, scaliness or discharge other than breastmilk. When breast cancer is found in the early stages, meaning it is more localized in nature, the five-year

When it comes to breast cancer, it’s encouraging to see the nation rally around all things pink and generate such collective awareness. It’s my hope that each woman will take that message to heart, always mindful to do what’s in the best interest of her ongoing health. *Dr. Tejal Patel is a board-certified radiologist specializing in breast imaging.

Orlando Magic is on a four game winning streak Orlando, FL - After a 90 - 73 win over Flamengo in Brazil the Magic returned to the Amway Center to host the New Orleans Pelicans. Orlando started off playing well, dare I say even impressive, and had a commanding 8 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Magic starters included Nik Vucevic, Tobias Harris, Evan Fournier, CJ Watson and Victor Oladipo. Watson started at point guard in place of Elfrid Payton who is out with a hamstring injury but expected to return in time for the regular season. Coach Scott Skiles began playing starters longer this game, getting them ready for the regular season. Vucevic had an impressive game with 14 rebounds and 24 points. The big man played great defensively as well as offensively but when the game came down to the wire, Vucevic missed two free throws that would have clenched the win for the Magic in regulation instead of going into overtime.

Harris and Fournier both were contributing factors for the Magic. Harris was able to put up impressive number while being guarded by the Pelicans AllStar Anthony Davis. Harris ended the game with 8 rebounds and 18 points. Harris also showed a more physical aspect to his game and was drawing more fouls. Magic rookie Mario Hezonja showed Orlando what he was about when he 19 points and shot 6 for 10 from the field including 4 three pointers. Hezonja is going to add much needed depth at the small forward position especially if Tobias continues to play as more of a power forward. He will also add a boost of energy coming off the bench. After rough second quarter, Orlando came back and were within 4 going into the final quarter. After a back and forth lead changing fourth quarter, Orlando tied it up and took it to overtime where they were able to hold on to a three point lead. The 110 to 107 victory added to Orlando’s new winning streak. The Magic have one more preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies tonight at the Amway Center before their regular season open, also in Orlando, next Wednesday against the Washington Wizards.

Orlando, FL - Orlando City is on a five game winning streak. Last Friday, in front of 43,000 fans, the Lions defeated NYCFC at the Citrus Bowl. Orlando looked good and attacked New York the majority of the first half but despite their efforts, New York got on the scoreboard first. In the final moments before half time, NYCFC made good on a corner kick. Orlando came out in the second half looking for their equalizer. In the 62nd minute of play, Corey Ashe found Cyle Larin who was able to find the back of the net. Eight minutes later Orlando claimed the lead. Adrian Winter fired off a shot that was deflected by NYCFC’s goalkeeper. The ball was sent directly to the feet of Larin who was able to score his 17th goal of the season. Coach Adrian Heath replaced Larin with Bryan Rochez with ten minutes remaining in the match. Larin received a loud, standing ovation for his efforts this season. With just five minutes left to play, Tally Hall, Orlando’s beloved goalkeeper, went down and was gripping his right knee - the same knee he tore his ACL in last season. Josh Ford replaced Hall making his first appearance. Orlando was able to keep their lead and their playoff hopes alive. For Orlando to make the playoffs, two things need to happen. Orlando needs to beat the Philadelphia Union by 4 goals and NYCFC would need to

beat the New England Revolution by 4 goals. Orlando currently trails New England by 3 points but in the event of a tie, the team with most goals scored would advance. Orlando will play this Sunday in Philadelphia at the same time NYCFC takes on New England. Josh Ford will continue in the goal as Tally Hall recovers from surgery on his torn meniscus. Larin will have the opportunity to get to the top 3 in MLS for goals scored. Currently, Larin is tied for 4th. As the inaugural season winds down, Orlando City had proved how much of a soccer town Orlando is. Orlando City and it’s fans broke records with attendance and did an excellent job painting the town purple. It did so well they made a major announcement this week: Orlando City will be adding a National Women’s Soccer League expansion team known as the Orlando Pride. President of Orlando City, Phil Rawlins stated “The name ‘Orlando Pride’ captures how we feel about Orlando, as well as firmly tying into the Lions family.” The team will play out of the Citrus Bowl at the beginning of the 2016 season before playing out of the new stadium. The Pride will be coached by Tom Sermanni who has a lengthy and impressive resume including coaching both the Australian National Team as well as the United States. The roster will be built through drafts and discovery signings. Orlando will have the first pick at both the College Draft as well as the Expansion Draft, which is scheduled for November 2nd.
