Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Tickets: drphillipscenter.org. Educación / Education Music helps new students transition and heal Osceola County, FL – Imagine being a school-aged student who has just lived through the trauma of Hurricane Maria. Your community is devastated and you are sent to Kissimmee to live with some distance family members whom you have never met while your family struggles to recover from hurricane damages. You are accustomed to your small, intimate school in Puerto Rico where everyone knows each other. You are sent to a very large school where there are strangers at every turn. To make matters feel even more foreign, you speak no English. This is such an overwhelming experience for someone to go through at such a young age. Currently, there are over 2,300 students recently enrolled in the Osceola school district. With 25 – 50 enrolling every day, those numbers will continue to climb. How does the school system even begin to help these children transition and heal? We are so fortunate to live in a community that has come together with initiatives that provide many of the basic needs such as clothes, food, and school supplies. Debbie Fahmie and Pam Haas head up the Fine and Performing Arts Department of the School District of Osceola County. They quickly realized that many of these students are bringing musical talents and a creative passion with them as they arrive. Debbie Fahmie says, “They may not speak English, but they DO speak music. In the band or orchestra room there is a language that immediately unites them and gives them a sense of belonging. Many of these students are living with distant family members and so the sense of family is lost, but in the music room, they instantly become a part of a like-minded family.” The arts programs are welcoming these

students with open arms. The problem is getting an instrument put into their hands. The demand is so great, that the existing inventory of school-owned instruments has quickly depleted. During this time of transition, inclusion in a school or after-school music program can offer these disadvantaged students so many therapeutic benefits. Until the children feel safe and accepted, it is hard for them to learn academically. The district is anxious to address the social and emotional needs of the newly enrolled students in order for them to even begin to achieve academically. With that in mind, Debbie Fahmie and Pam Haas, along with one of their strategic partners in music education, LiveMusicTutor. com, are working with various local and national organizations to help fund an initiative to acquire additional instruments and bi-lingual music instructors. Live Music Tutor has been providing supplemental resources and music instructors for over 3 years to the School District of Osceola County and will assist with providing bi-lingual instructors and obtaining instruments in support of this effort. “We would like to engage Osceola County and all of Central Florida in assisting with the efforts to assist these students going through this disruption in their lives and give them a place of comfort that we believe the universal language of music will provide” says Ted Gee, President of Live Music Tutor Inc. There are a lot of initiatives going on in support of this disaster, but the Arts Department of the School District along with LiveMusicTutor.com feel that the social and emotional benefits that music will provide is an immediate need that will help with the transition and all future successes these students will experience here in Florida.

Sinceramente, Mayor Russell S. Conte

Dr. Jeniffer Robertson Valencia Poinciana Campus Dean

To President Shugart, Valencia College President From November 6, 2017, through December 15, 2017, a team of New Hampshire State Troopers were deployed to Puerto Rico to assist local authorities following hurricane Maria. We joined Law Enforcement Officers from throughout the Continental United States in a massive relief effort coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This ongoing endeavor provided an opportunity for our team to serve in an unwavering capacity and interact with diverse communities left with very little following this disaster. You might question how a connection can be made between a New England State Police Agency and a College Campus in Orlando Florida? The answer lies in knowing the right person. We met Dr. Jennifer Robertson quite by accident, she was seeking directions and we were directing traffic. What happend next involved an energetic New Hampshire rooted Executive Dean and a group of men and women committed to help the people of Puerto Rico. The

story of diversity and service at Valencia College touched a chord and we partnered to execute what turned out to be a very fluid plan. Over the course of two weeks the donations collected by your students arrived on the island and a team that included Valencia College, The New Hampshire State Police, The Florida Highway Patrol, The Connecticut State Police and The Puerto Rico Police Department took possession and delivered hope to those most in need. It made for some life changing moments and reminded us of the common ground we all share. This enormous effort of gathering and transporting critical supplies to communities in the most remote parts of Puerto Rico took vision, determination and courage. Simply put Sir, your organization has a jewel in Dr. Robertson; examples of selfless leadership are sometimes very hard to find. We considered ourselves fortunate to meet someone who so readily represented the spirit and mission of your institution. Sincerely, Major Russell S. Conte

Who’s going to make it to the Super Bowl? By Juan Pablo Sabines Orlando, FL - February 4th, on TD Bank Stadium in Minnesota, one team will lift the Lombardi Trophy, there are twelve teams currently in the hunt, but only a few of them can be consider making it all the way to Super Sunday. In the AFC, only the Patriots and Steelers seem capable to be crown as champions. If any of them manages to do so, it would be historic. Pittsburgh would get its seventh Super Bowl, Putting them way ahead of the competition. And if New England were together, it would be their sixth in seventeen years, tying Pittsburgh for the most ever, and unimaginable feat. The rest of the AFC, on the other hand, seem just happy to be there in the playoffs. Jacksonville made its first postseason in ten years, surprising the entire league with that elite defense, powerful run game commanded by Fournette, and even decent play of Blake Bortles, their quarterback. However, even though they look like the biggest contestant to both New England and Pittsburgh, it seems unlikely that they can beat both of them on the road. Kansas City had a tremendous start of the season, but then flopped into a 1-6 record in the middle of the season. Even if they amended and won their division, they don’t look as strong as they did back in October. As for the Titans and Bills, it’s already an achievement to make it this far. Tennessee is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2008, and Buffalo is back for the first time since 1999, thus breaking the longest playoff drought in American sports history.

the Magic host the Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic’s City Edition uniform celebrates the magic that exists in our solar system and beyond. The uniform keeps the iconic symbol for the Magic over the years front and center, the stars, and features a shimmery cosmic look and feel. Representative of reaching beyond the limits, the City Uniform breaks from the team’s pinstripe tradition for a unique take on the Magic name. Beginning in the 2017-18 NBA season, home teams can pick which of their uniforms will be worn at home games and visiting teams will choose a contrasting uniform within their own assortment. Nike and the Magic recently unveiled three other new looks, Association, Icon and Statement uniforms. The uniforms were developed through a collaborative effort between the NBA, its players, and Nike. Photo Courtesy: El Orlando Magic

In the NFC, the Vikings can become the first team ever to host the Super Bowl. With the best defense in the league, and a nice performance by their backup QB, Case Keenum, they have a real shot at coming back to the ship for the first time since the 70’s. The Eagles were the #1 seed in the NFC, but without their talented QB, Carson Wentz, they don’t look as strong as they did most of the season. The Saints are a surprisingly young team, commanded by their twoheaded monster in the running back position, Kamara and Ingram, and their elite QB, Drew Brees. As for the Los Angeles Rams, a team that’s back in the playoffs for the first time in 13 years, it’s a young and refreshing squad that can certainly make a surprise in the postseason. Second year QB, Jared Goff, third year RB Todd Gurley, and the 31year old head coach, Sean McVay. The Panthers and Falcons are more experienced teams (the last two NFC champions), but don’t seem to have the same power as previous years. In the end, it’ll be a journey to remember, and on February 4th, the world will greet the Super Bowl LII champions.
