Senator Soto’s “Chloe’s Law” signed by Governor Tallahassee, FL – Governor Rick Scott has signed HB 7061, which was carrying Senator Darren Soto’s (D-Orlando) priority bill “Chloe’s Law” (SB 522) for the 2016 Florida Legislative Session. “Chloe’s Law” requires the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to increase barriers along bodies of water on state roads where deaths have occurred and according to new FDOT guidelines. This legislation is in response to the tragic death of 21-year old UCF student Chloe Arenas, who last June lost control of her vehicle and drowned after plunging into a retention pond off State Road 408 exit ramp at the Alafaya Trail interchange in Orange County. Her death was one of many expected annually from vehicle-related drownings, all part of Florida’s

alarming rank as first in the nation for such tragedies, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "I would like to thank all of our UCF students including Clarissa Lindsey and Student Government Legislative Affairs Coordinator Tyler Yeargain for their passionate advocacy leading to the passage of Chloe's Law," said Senator Soto. “No parent should ever have to bury their child. With Chloe’s Law’s passage, we can begin to take steps necessary to ensure Florida has the safest roadways. It was an honor to work with both chambers in a bi-partisan effort to ensure this law’s passage,” said Representative Rene Plasencia (R-Orlando), who cosponsored the measure in the House.

Osceola County Approves E-Cigarette Regulations Osceola County, FL – Citing concerns for residents’ health, Osceola County Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance aimed to protect residents from the devices on Monday night. The new rules mirror those in effect for traditional smoked tobacco products. There were several concerns noted during the presentation: second-hand smoke, safety of the devices and the way they are often advertised to youth who are more susceptible to the highly addictive nicotine they often contain. “This is a potential public health crisis on many levels. This ordinance was necessary because of the proliferation of the devices and the lack of reliable scientific data available on the impact to users and of the impact of secondhand emissions to others,” said Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “E-cigarette companies are using the same strategies previously employed by the tobacco industry to effectively market cigarettes to our youth. E-cigarette brands often offer products in fruit and candy flavors that are especially enticing.” The ordinance prohibits sale of e-cigarettes to minors and prohibits the use of e-cigarettes where smoking is prohibited. In addition, it prohibits the display and retail sale of e-cigarettes or liquid nicotine by means of self-service merchandising, and prohibits retailers from placing e-cigarettes or liquid nicotine in an open display unit unless the unit is located in

an area that is inaccessible to customers. The emergence of unregulated e-cigarettes (also known as vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, e-hookahs, vape pipes, and electronic cigars) has triggered a flood of questions and considerable discussion regarding the risks they pose to users – particularly children and teens. While most tobacco products have faced marketing restrictions for decades, there has been a notable increase in the marketing of e-cigarettes, from TV commercials to billboards and music festival sponsorships. This is concerning because nicotine exposure at a young age may cause lasting harm to brain development, promote addiction, and lead to sustained tobacco use, experts say. Adolescents are more sensitive to nicotine and more easily addicted than adults with use disrupting the formation of brain circuits that control attention, learning and susceptibility to addiction. Commissioners also discussed instances when the devices exploded or caught fire, leading to injuries. Secondhand vapor was another reason for the commission’s action. A survey released last year found that 79% of Floridians are concerned about secondhand smoke in general. A person found in violation of the ordinance is subject to a fine of up to $500 or up to 60 days in the county jail.

National Day of Prayer – Thursday, May 7th Osceola County, FL - The 64th Annual National Day of Prayer will take place Thursday, May 5th, 2016. Millions will unite in prayer, for America and its leadership, at thousands of events from coast to coast. Three community events will be held in Osceola County from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. at Osceola County Courthouse, Kissimmee City Hall and St. Cloud City Hall. Osceola County residents are invited to attend any of them. Since the time of our nation’s founding, public prayer has been an essential part or our heritage. The tradition of designating an official day of prayer actually began with the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775. In 1952, by a joint act of

Congress, the National Day of Prayer was signed into law. In 1988, the law was amended to read as follows: The President of the United States shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals. Historically, along with the President, all 50 Governors have issued proclamations in honor of the observance of the National Day of Prayer. In doing so, they have affirmed the importance of prayer and of this annual event. For more information go to: www. ndposceola.com

El Viejito Saludable / The Healthy Geezer Glaucoma is defined as a group of diseases that can damage the eye's optic nerve, which carries images from the eye to the brain. Here’s how glaucoma works: A clear fluid flows through a small space at the front of the eye called the “anterior chamber.” If you have glaucoma, the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye and pressure builds up. This pressure may damage the optic nerve.

Glaucoma Q. Who is most likely to get glaucoma? Those at highest risk are AfricanAmericans, everyone over age 60, and people with a family history of glaucoma.

However, increased eye pressure doesn’t necessarily mean you have glaucoma. It means you are at risk for glaucoma. A person has glaucoma only if the optic nerve is damaged. The most common treatments for glaucoma are medication and surgery. Medications for glaucoma

may come in eye drops or pills. For most people with glaucoma, regular use of medications will control the increased fluid pressure. Laser surgery is another treatment for glaucoma. The laser is focused on the part of the anterior chamber where the fluid leaves the eye. This makes it easier for fluid to exit the eye. Over time, the effect of this surgery may wear off. Patients who have laser surgery may need to keep taking glaucoma drugs. Studies have shown that the early detection and treatment of glaucoma is the best way to control the disease. So, have your eyes examined thoroughly and regularly if you are in a high-risk category. And that includes all of us geezers.

Preliminary winners for Student Launch were announced during an awards ceremony April 16, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, and hosted by Orbital ATK.

the Orlando Magic and the DeVos family pay all administrative expenses for the foundation, 100 percent of all donations made to OMYF, plus the match, are granted to qualified nonprofit organizations. With major support from OMYF, over the last 26 years, nearly $20 million has been distributed to local nonprofit community organizations through the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund (OMYFMFF). At the heart of the Magic’s charitable efforts is the work done by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation. The Orlando Magic Youth Foundation raises community dollars annually through donations, auctions and events such as the Black Tie and Tennies Gala and the OMYF Open Golf Tournament.

Controversial ending leads to 2-2 draw between City and New England

Orlando, FL – Fueled by 36,048 supporters at the Orlando Citrus Bowl, Orlando City SC (2-1-3, 9 points) surprised the New England Revolution (1-1-5, 7 points) with a penalty-kick call 36 seconds after the opening whistle, marking the quickest penalty kick scored in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, and went on to draw 2-2 after a controversial stoppage-time decision that awarded the visiting team with a game-tying opportunity.

First-time starter and attacking forward, Julio Baptista, debuted in his first match at the Orlando Citrus Bowl, making strong contributions right out of the gate. The Brazilian helped open the scoring sheet by drawing the early penalty kick that was ultimately converted by Kaká. Heath made two key substitutions early in the second half to increase City’s offensive pressure, introducing birthday boy, Cyle Larin, and Kevin Molino, who featured in his 100th match as a Lion. After a first half that ended 1-1 on Kaká’s penalty and a 37th minute goal

by Teal Bunbury, Molino secured his second goal of the season with a low, driven shot past Revs’ goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth in stoppage time. The score looked like it would be the game-winner, but a contentious call in the 94+ minute granted the Revolution a penalty kick that was converted by Lee Nguyen. Nguyen’s goal was setup after second-half substitute Servando Carrasco was whistled for a debatable handball, with the ball originally placed just outside the penalty area. However, after a few minutes of discussion, head referee Baldomero Toledo changed his decision and awarded the uncontested shot from 12 yards out, leading to the 2-2 final. Next, Orlando City heads out for a two-game road swing, first traveling to face the New York Red Bulls on April 24 before facing the Revolution again, this time on April 30 at Gillette Stadium. The Club returns to the Citrus Bowl on May 6, when it hosts the Red Bulls at 7 p.m. ET.

Orlando Pride ready to put on a show for a historic crowd On Sunday night, the Orlando Pride took on the Portland Thorns to kick off their inaugural season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Although the team didn’t walk away with the results they wanted, they took to the pitch and proved that they will be a formidable opponent this season. Now, they’re looking to build off that momentum this Saturday, in their home opener against the Houston Dash.

no one really knows what to make of the NWSL’s newest team. While both of these opponents have strong attacking games, the Pride has one of the best defensive lines in the NWSL. Of the starting players in the lineup against the Thorns, seven play for different national teams. Even though they’re still learning each other's rhythm and techniques, they are starting to develop a style that is entirely their own.

The Portland Thorns are widely considered to be one of the best teams in NWSL, coming in ranked #1 in this week’s NWSL power rankings. The Houston Dash is ranked #2. But

Are you #FilledWithPride? Then join them in the Citrus Bowl on Saturday, April 23rd at 7:00pm as the Orlando Pride take on the Houston Dash.
