Valencia Learning Day By Linda Shrieves Beaty

Kissimmee, FL - On Friday, February 12, Valencia’s Osceola Campus opened the doors to 218 third- and fourth-grade students from Central Avenue Elementary

in Kissimmee. The students participated in a variety of science experiments and exercises designed to encourage them to stay focused on education – and attend college one day. Valencia’s Osceola Campus adopted Central Avenue Elementary in 2014 when the school district superintendent asked for help tackling the issues facing Central Avenue students. The school had the lowest reading scores in Osceola County in 2014, with only 26 percent of third-graders passing the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and just 17 percent passing in math. So every year on Valencia’s Learning Day – a day devoted to in-service training for Valencia’s faculty and staff – the Osceola Campus opens its doors to Central Avenue students, who come for a field day of fun and learning. For many, it’s the first time they’ve stepped onto a college campus. And that, says Dr. Plinske, is one step toward creating students focused on their futures. “If a student doesn’t see themselves as college material,” she says, “it’s hard to change that mindset.”

Osceola County Breaks Ground on New 'Prototype’ Fire Station Osceola County, FL – Osceola County broke ground on a new fire station Monday morning that uses a prototypical design to be used for all of the county’s future stations. Station 64 off of Pleasant Hill Road is the first the county has built since the Harmony station, which opened in 2009. “This facility will be a real asset to the community,” said Commissioner Brandon Arrington, whose district will be served by the new station. “We’ve shown great fiscal prudence by developing a design we can use for all future stations that will also include a community room. In addition, it will be a more secure location for our firefighters than the old station, which was never designed for 24/7 Fire Service.” Work on the $4.5 million project is expected to be complete in 2017. As the first station using a design by CT Hsu & Associates, the 12,456-square-foot station will feature a 4-bay design, concrete tilt wall construction and a community room that

Commissioner Brandon Arrington

can be used for small group meetings. Unlike the “temporary” station it will replace, it is designed to withstand severe weather events with up to 150 mph wind speeds. It is designed to house up to 10 firefighters and a Battalion Chief. A county fueling station also is part of the site. “Better quarters mean that our firefighters will have a better quality of life and that translates directly into the ability to better serve our community,” said Osceola Fire Chief Robert Sorenson. “This is a modern design that will feature amenities that we didn’t think about just a few years ago. And it will allow us to accommodate for growth in the future.” Commissioners acknowledged the importance of public safety in their strategic planning. Osceola County recently replaced all of its hydraulic rescue equipment (often referred to as the “Jaws of Life”) and will be adding a new engine company in October, along with two replacement engines expected for 2017.

Orlando, FL - The Orlando Magic was surprisingly active this trade season. Despite rumors of them remaining mum during the trade week, the Magic traded away two of their starting players. Many of Orlando’s young players have been underperforming, so it’s no surprise that General Manager, Rob Hennigan, tested the waters to see what he could get; what does come as a surprise are the trades that were made. Tobias Harris was traded to the Detroit Pistons for point guard Brandon Jennings and power forward Ersan Ilyasova. Jennings will give Orlando more depth at the point guard position where starter Elfrid Payton has struggled to make significant improvements this season and Shabazz Napier and CJ Watson, both reserve point guards, have battled injuries all season. Jennings’ contract will expire this July and become a free agent. Giving Orlando more cap space should they choose to bid during the off season. Ilyasova has one

non-guaranteed season remaining after this season. Again, the Magic can release him to free agency if the forward does not work with their future plans. Acquiring Detroit’s starting power forward made Channing Frye seem like the next reasonable trade. And so it was. Frye was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three team trade. The Cavs sent Anderson Varejo and a conditional first round pick to the Portland Trailblazers and the Magic acquired backup guard Jared Cunningham from Cleveland and a second round pick from Portland. The Magic plan to waive Cunningham immediately. Orlando will have an approximate 45 million dollars in cap space come this July. This is all good news despite Orlando trading away a fan favorite. The team certainly did not get any worse this trade deadline and more players will see the playing time they need to develop. Orlando’s next game is this Friday against the Dallas Mavericks.
