Osceola Regional Medical Center brings stroke treatment advancements with New Comprehensive Stroke Center Kissimmee, FL – Osceola Regional Medical Center now offers a higher level of care for complex stroke cases and becomes the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center in Osceola County. The addition of the AHCA Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center to its Joint Commission Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Center is part of a $50 million expansion plan announced earlier this year. By achieving Comprehensive Stroke Center status, Osceola Regional is now providing more advanced stroke treatments than primary stroke centers located in Osceola and surrounding counties. Scientific evidence shows that when a stroke, or also called brain attack occurs, immediate assessment and treatment will reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chances of a permanent disability. With the opening of the new Comprehensive Stroke Center, patients suffering from all types of strokes to include severe stroke cases such as large brain clots and hemorrhages, can now receive immediate care closer to home. With 24/7 access to minimally invasive stroke procedures, onsite neurosurgeons, and dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, the hospital’s new Comprehensive Stroke Center is staffed with a specially trained team of neurointerventionalists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and healthcare professionals with 24/7 coverage. Dr. Ankur Garg, Neurointerventionalist and Medical Director leads the program and advanced technologies such as Biplane Angiography which produces three-dimensional views of the brain to help diagnose and treat complex strokes.
“My goal is provide outstanding care to stroke and brain hemorrhage patients while bringing worldclass treatment to Osceola and surrounding communities”, said Dr. Garg. Osceola Regional Medical Center’s CEO, Davide Carbone mentioned how the hospital’s multiple expansions and additions have extended the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare services to our community. According the American Heart and Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death in the nation, accounting for approximately 795,000 strokes each year and is the leading cause of serious long-term disability. On average, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds in the US and every 4 minutes, someone dies of a stroke. Locally, Osceola Regional continues to see sicker patients in our community and reported they treated nearly 645 stroke patients since the beginning of this year. In an effort to educate the community, the hospital urges the community to act fast to know the signs of stroke and to call 911 immediately. For more information on the risk factors, prevention and signs of stroke, visit OsceolaRegional.com/stroke. Earlier this year, Osceola Regional received the American Heart and Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with the highest distinction of Target: Stroke Honor Roll-Elite, which recognizes its commitment to treating patients according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

Osceola County Commission puts brakes on development Osceola county, FL – In pausing certain types of development for six months, the Osceola County Commission took a strong stand on ensuring that future growth won’t affect the current quality of life for citizens. The ordinance was approved by a 3-2 vote Monday, and will freeze almost all types of comprehensive plan amendments and rezoning of property. Requests to utilize natural resources and qualified economic development projects would not be affected. Also, anything that has the proper land use and zoning designations – things such as the Osceola County’s innovative Mixed- Use Districts and current planned developments (as long as no use changes were requested) would be allowed. Affordable Housing is also exempt. During the time that the moratorium is in place, the County will be working on multiple issues, including an update to its mobility fee, design standards for residential homes, inclusion of solar panels for homes and changes to the land development code. A process to update the Comprehensive Plan will address rural enclaves, the definition for commercial
and office property, connectivity and creating centers with a mix of uses. Officials are also optimistic that the 6-month window will accelerate development in the County’s MixedUse Districts – areas ripe for greater housing diversity, as those districts include 27,450 multi-family units, along with single-family units and millions of square feet of non-residential uses. Housing diversity is an important affordable housing strategy in Osceola, because single-family detached housing, which represents a high percentage of the stock being built in Osceola, is not likely to be affordable to households earning less than $35,000 per year. The $35,000 income threshold is based on recent analysis of costburdened households in the County (households spending more than 30% of their income for housing). More than 8 in 10 households at this income level are cost-burdened, with over half paying 50% or more of their income for housing. This represents the most immediate need for housing in Osceola – more than 27,000 households fall into this category.

Supplies donated in Central Florida personally delivered to those in need in Puerto Rico by El Meson Sandwiches By: Jeannette Rivera-Lyles Puerto Rico is making progress toward recovery from hurricanes Irma and Maria, with help from many in the Puerto Rican and Hispanic diaspora throughout the country, including Central Florida. Thousands of pounds of food, water and other emergency supplies
collected in Central Florida have already been distributed in the island. The emergency supplies were donated by hundreds of Central Floridians at different events organized by CASA of Central Florida and El Meson Sandwiches. The company, with three restaurants in Central Florida, covered the transportation to Puerto Rico of 200,000 pounds of supplies collected in Central Florida. Once the shipping containers arrived at the port in Puerto Rico, the supplies were broken down into individual emergency aid kits that were personally distributed to families in need.
“This has been a good example of team work to deliver hope to our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters,” said Tomas Javier Rivera, cofounder of CASA. Meson Sandwiches CEO Felipe Perez, said he was proud of how the Central Florida community responded to help Puerto Rico during its hour of need. Additionally, the restaurant chain converted one of its stores in Southwestern Puerto Rico into an emergency kitchen, where it prepared over a thousand sandwiches every day for four weeks to feed. The sandwiches were taken to remote, hard to reach neighborhoods in the region and distributed home by home by El Meson’s employees and volunteers. In total, more than 15,000 sandwiches and 2,000 water cases were distributed this way. El Meson Sandwiches has three restaurants in Central Florida located at the Florida Mall dining pavilion in Orlando, Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee, and the Premium Outlets at Vineland also in Orlando. Two standalone stores with drive-thru are scheduled to open early next year in Lee Vista Promenade, near the Orlando International Airport, and in the Gardens of Millennia, near The Mall at Millennia. With the completion of these two new stores, El Meson Sandwiches will have five restaurants in Central Florida by 2018.

All is set for the World Cup Orlando, FL - In the night of Wednesday, November 15th, Peru defeated New Zealand 2-0 at Lima to secure the last ticket to the World Cup in Russia, to be played in the summer of 2018. The Peruvians were the 32nd team to earn their spot in Russia, and they join a large Latin-American coalition. Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Costa Rica & Panama will represent Hispanic America in the next World Cup, in hopes of breaking the streak of European squads as world champions, which has happened in three World Cups in a row (Italy 2006, Spain 2010, Germany 2014). Panama will play in their first ever World Cup, joining the surprising Iceland
as the newcomers in the tournament. Russia 2018 will also feature the return of several fan favorite teams, such as Peru, back after 36 years, Egypt, back for the first time since 1990, Morocco, back after 20 years, or Sweden and Poland, returning for the first time since Germany 2006. Russia 2018 will undoubtedly have a huge void. In October, three important teams were eliminated: Chile, Holland and the USA. In November, another great team was left out of World Cup contention: Italy. The 4-time world champions couldn’t beat Sweden in the UEFA play-off, as they failed to qualify to the World Cup for the first time in 60 years. Italy is in big trouble, since this is the third straight failure in the World Cup (in 2010 and 2014 they didn’t qualify from their group), and with the retirements of Gianluigi Buffon, Danielle
de Rossi, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli, the azzurri have not enough young talent to compete in the next tournaments. Nevertheless, Russia 2018 will be filled with excitement and passion, with 32 teams that played their best to earn their spot in the biggest sporting event in the world, but only one of them can lift the trophy. What’s next? December 1st, the World Cup draw, to define the groups and the destiny of each nation that qualified to Russia 2018.

Sea inteligente. Cuídese.

The closure is needed as part of SunRail’s Phase II South extension project, which will add approximately 17.2 miles of new rail line between the Sand Lake Road Station in Orange County and the Poinciana Station in Osceola County. The project also involves double-tracking most of the corridor and improving grade crossings. Please note that schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Updates are available at www.cflroads.com. Please drive carefully, especially in and around construction zones. Also, be careful around railroad tracks. Be smart. Be Safe.
