Statement on ALPR cameras

St. Cloud, FL – The St. Cloud Police Department is committed to the responsible use of technology that helps to keep our community safe, while maintaining your trust in how those tools are used. Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems have provided law enforcement with valuable investigative capabilities, including specific cases in our jurisdiction such as tracking Madeline Soto’s killer and recovering her body, locating serial burglars in new home construction areas, arresting felony domestic violence offenders, and more. We continue to recognize the legitimate public safety benefits of this technology. However, the use of ALPR systems has become the subject of increasing discussion across Florida, particularly regarding privacy, access to collected information, data retention, information sharing, and oversight. Recent actions at the state and local levels have created uncertainty regarding how these systems will be regulated moving forward.

License Plate Reader (ALPR) camera network effective immediately, while the State of Florida considers a more consistent framework for ALPR technology. We support statewide standards that clearly define how ALPR systems may be used, who may access the information they generate, how long data may be retained, and what accountability measures should apply. Clear rules will help protect individual privacy, promote transparency, and provide law enforcement agencies with appropriate guidance for using this technology responsibly. This does not change our view that ALPR can be a critical public safety tool; it reflects our belief that effective policing and responsible safeguards should go hand in hand. The St. Cloud Police Department will continue monitoring developments at the state level and evaluating the appropriate role of ALPR technology in serving and protecting our community.

In addition to recent FDOT mandates, the St. Cloud Police Department will discontinue its use of the Automated

By: Linda Shrieves As a child, Aneka Reid wanted to become a teacher.

As a dual-enrollment student, Aneka had already taken classes at Valencia College. But when she was a senior at Gateway High School in 2023, she was thrilled that the Osceola County Commissioners announced they would provide every graduating senior in the county with a scholarship to Valencia College through the Osceola Prosper program. “In high school, I definitely thought about college, but I didn’t think about the logistics and how to pay for it,” says Aneka, now 20. “When I heard about Osceola Prosper, I thought, ‘Wow, there’s a pathway for me that I can continue.’ It would cover the financial aspect that so many people worry about.” Aneka was especially grateful after she filled out the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and learned she didn’t qualify for federal aid. Without Prosper, she would have had to pay the full cost of tuition to Valencia College. “I would have had to consider student loans or work full time to pay for college, so Osceola Prosper really became the backbone for me.” She also recognized how lucky she was when she saw other students worry about paying for college. “I used to work in the Osceola Atlas lab,” she says, “and when we had payment deadlines, we would see students rushing in and having panic attacks. Osceola Prosper definitely took the stress off me.” Aneka finished her Associate in Arts degree in December 2024, and will graduate with an Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) degree in August 2026. She’s currently doing clinical rotations, during which she and other nursing students work in different units at local hospitals. Those experiences have confirmed that the nursing program at Valencia College was the right choice for her. “I chose nursing for a complex number of reasons,” says Aneka. “For one, the type of holistic care that nurses provide. You’re not just caring for someone in that moment, but you may be helping them emotionally and physically.” But she also wanted to work in a field that would allow her to contribute to her community. “I found that nursing would create a way that I could make an impact in our community, especially for those in the hospital,” she says. “As a nurse, you play such a big role in someone’s life at such a vulnerable moment. That’s something to take pride in, to take seriously.” For future students who have the opportunity to go to college thanks to Osceola Prosper, Aneka offers this advice: Take it. “Osceola Prosper creates a bridge. A lot of people after high school, they struggle and they don’t know whether to go college or not. My advice is: Take advantage of the resources that are given to you.”

By high school, she’d started to consider something in the medical field. So when a family member experienced a serious health crisis, she turned her attention to nursing. “I saw a different aspect of care that I’d never seen before,” says Aneka. “I saw how intentional that care was and how impactful it was to my family member, and that led me to re-examine my choices.”

Aneka Reid decided to become a nurse after watching a family member experience a health crisis. She loves the idea of helping patients both physically and emotionally, while also giving back to her community.

Zverev and Rybakina conquer a 2026 US Open marked by upsets and epic battles

Alexander Zverev secures second Grand Slam title.

By: Katiuska Egea Kissimmee, FL – The 2026 US Open concluded on Sunday, September 13, at Flushing Meadows in New York, after two weeks of tennis in which surprises emerged from the opening rounds and continued until the very end. Alexander Zverev and Elena Rybakina were the singles champions of an edition that also featured a historic performance by Ben Shelton in front of the American crowd, unexpected eliminations of several top players, and matches that stretched late into the night. The biggest shock came practically at the beginning of the tournament. Novak Djokovic was eliminated in the first round by Argentina’s Mariano Navone. For Djokovic, it marked his first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam tournament since 2006 and one of the biggest upsets of this year’s event. Ben Shelton defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in a match that ended in the early hours of the morning and became the latest-finishing match in US Open history. Shelton continued his run by defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. On the other side of the draw, Zverev advanced more convincingly. The German defeated Karen Khachanov in the semifinals, securing his place in the final. On Sunday, the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium was over whelmingly behind Shelton, who was seeking to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Zverev, however, maintained control in the decisive moments and prevailed 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2. With the victory, the German captured his second Grand Slam title and capped an extraordinary season at the majors. For Zverev, New York also represented personal redemption after coming extremely close to the title in 2020, when he lost the final to Dominic Thiem after winning the first two sets.

Shelton fell one step short of the championship, but his performance was one of the tournament’s biggest stories. The American eliminated Alcaraz, defeated Tiafoe and reached the US Open final for the first time, although his loss extended the wait for American men’s tennis to produce another Grand Slam champion. In the women’s draw, Elena Rybakina completed an extraordinary campaign that culminated not only with the US Open trophy, but also with her rise to No. 1 in the world rankings. In the round of 16, the Kazakh defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and later came from behind against Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinals. Coco Gauff, one of the American crowd’s biggest hopes, awaited her in the semifinals. Gauff won the first set, but Rybakina responded to prevail 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, also ending the American’s 11-match winning streak. The other semifinal featured Aryna Sabalenka against Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka, who entered the tournament as the two-time defending US Open champion, prevailed and moved within one victory of capturing three consecutive titles in New York, something no woman had accomplished since Serena Williams between 2012 and 2014. Saturday’s women’s final therefore brought together two of the tour’s biggest stars. Rybakina took the first set 6- 4, Sabalenka responded by winning the second 7-5, but the Kazakh dominated the deciding set 6-2 to capture the US Open title for the first time. The victory represented the third Grand Slam title of Rybakina’s career and confirmed her rise to world No. 1. Sabalenka, meanwhile, saw her two-year reign as champion come to an end. The 2026 edition also awarded the largest prize purse in tennis history, with $108 million in total player compensation. The men’s and women’s singles champions each received $5.5 million.

Sammy Figueroa returned to Judson’s Live with tribute to Cal Tjader Orlando, FL – Grammy- and Latin Grammy-nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa returned to Judson’s Live at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Sept. 4-5 for a special tribute to Latin jazz legend Cal Tjader. Fresh off a summer run in the OffBroadway production “The Potluck,” Figueroa will celebrate Tjader’s signature Latin jazz sound alongside an accomplished ensemble featuring Latin Grammy-winning vibraphonist Felipe Fournier, pianist Tal Cohen, Argentine bassist Agustin Conti and timbalero Murph Aucamp, who returns home to Florida after several years in New York performing with Blue Man Group.

Born in the Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico, Figueroa spent two decades as one of New York’s most sought-after percussionists, recording and touring with artists including Miles Davis, David Bowie and Mariah Carey. After moving to South Florida, he formed his own Latin jazz ensemble and has since recorded five albums and toured throughout the United States and Europe. His album, “Searching for a Memory,” earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz/Jazz Album and was among WUCF’s most popular albums of 2024. For the Judson’s Live performances, Figueroa and his band revisited the music

of Tjader, the influential vibraphonist known for blending jazz with Afro Cuban and Latin rhythms. Fournier took on Tjader’s signature vibraphone sound,

while Figueroa paid tribute on congas to Mongo Santamaría, whose percussion helped shape some of Tjader’s celebrated recordings.
