El Condado Osceola celebra aniversario 250 de EE.UU. honrando nuestra historia

Condado Osceola, FL - Mientras la nación se une para celebrar el 250ta aniversario de America, la Junta de Comisionados del Condado Osceola anuncia su participación en las festividades que durarán todo el año para conmemorar este momento trascendental y patriótico.

Desde ahora hasta finales del 2026, el Centro Judicial Histórico ha sido decorado con festones rojos, blancos y azules e iluminado con luces eficientes en el consumo de energía reflejando la misma gama de colores patrióticos. A su vez, el balcón del Centro Judicial Histórico ha sido dotado con el emblema de América 250 del Estado de Florida y el emblema especializado del condado para dicha ocasión.

Completado en mayo de 1890, el Centro Judicial Histórico en el Centro de Kissimmee es una joya arquitectónica y un monumento cívico. Construido en el estilo neorrománico, con su característico ladrillo rojo y una torre de entrada prominente, su sala de audiencias en el tercer piso sigue en uso como parte del Noveno Circuito Judicial de Florida, lo que le ha valido la designación de ser el tribunal más antiguo de Florida en uso continuo para fines judiciales.

Reconocido por su importancia histórica y arquitectónica, el edificio fue incluido en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos de los Estados Unidos en el 1977 y permanece como punto focal en el paisaje del centro de Kissimmee, convirtiendo al Centro Judicial Histórico en un valioso tesoro comunitario que nos hace reflexionar sobre la historia de nuestra nación, el legado de nuestros

Padres Fundadores y la celebración del 250 aniversario de los Estado Unidos.

Además de las decoraciones festivas, el Condado Osceola ha implementado el emblema de América 250 para ser utilizado durante todo el año y celebrará la reunión de la Junta de Comisionados del Condado el lunes 6 de julio en el tercer piso del histórico juzgado conmemorando así el uso original del edificio como lugar de reunión de la comunidad.

Asimismo, se han planificado eventos adicionales celebrar esta ocasión monumental, que serán anunciados en los canales de redes sociales del Condado al igual que en la página de America 250 del Condado, www.osceola.org/ america250. El condado celebró los 100 años de la Sra. Clara Thomas

Condado Osceola, FL - El 11 de febrero, la comisionada del Condado Osceola del Distrito 4, Cheryl Grieb, tuvo el honor de reconocer a la Sra. Clara Thomas en su increíble centésimo cumpleaños, un hito lleno de historia, resiliencia y toda una vida de recuerdos.

Habiendo vivido durante la segregación, Clara enfrentó cada barrera con fuerza silenciosa. Pionera en muchos sentidos, fue una de las primeras madres afroamericanas en enviar a su hija a una escuela completamente blanca. Junto a su esposo, Clara sirvió en la Iglesia Bautista Misionera Shiloh durante 33 años.

Alcanzar los 100 años es más que un cumpleaños. Es una celebración de la fortaleza, la sabiduría y de las generaciones de familia y comunidad a las que ha tocado a lo largo del camino.

El Condado Osceola se enorgullece de celebrar a residentes como la Sra. Thomas, que representan el corazón y el espíritu de nuestra comunidad.

Osceola County celebrates America 250 by honoring our history

Osceola County, FL - As the nation comes together to celebrate America's 250th birthday, the Osceola Board of County Commissioners has announced the County's participation in year-long festivities to mark the momentous and patriotic occasion.

Now through the end of 2026, the Historic Courthouse has been festooned in red, white, and blue bunting, complete with energy-efficient LED lighting that reflects the same patriotic color scheme. Also, the balcony of the Historic Courthouse has been outfitted with the State of Florida's America 250 logo and the County's specialized logo for the occasion.

Completed in May 1890, the Historic Courthouse in downtown Kissimmee is a treasured architectural and civic landmark. Built in the Romanesque Revival style with characteristic red brick, round arches, and a prominent entrance tower, its third-floor courtroom remains active as part of Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit, earning its designation as the oldest Florida courthouse in continuous use for court purposes.

Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and remains a focal point of downtown Kissimmee’s skyline, making the Historic Courthouse a meaningful community treasure for reflecting on our nation’s history, the legacy of our

Founding Fathers, and the celebration of America’s semiquincentennial.

“America 250 invites us to reflect on the ideals that shaped our nation and provides an opportunity to recommit to the promise of what’s ahead," said District 3 Commissioner Brandon Arrington, Chairman of the Osceola Board of County Commissioners. "Osceola County is honored to be first to celebrate America, honoring this historic anniversary alongside our residents, community partners, and fellow Americans."

In addition to the festive decor, Osceola County has adopted an America 250 logo for use during the year and will host its Monday, July 6, 2026, Board of County Commissioners meeting in the third-floor courtroom of the Historic Courthouse, celebrating the building's original use as a meeting space for the community.

Likewise, additional events are being planned to celebrate the momentous occasion, with those events being announced regularly on the County's social media channels as well as on the County's America 250 page at www.osceola.org/ america250. Events from the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud, as well as other community partners will be added to this page to ensure the community may participate year-round.

Osceola County, FL - On February 11, Osceola County Commissioner for District 4, Cheryl Grieb had the honor of recognizing Ms. Clara Thomas on her incredible 100th birthday, a milestone filled with history, resilience, and a lifetime of memories.

Living through segregation, Clara met every barrier with quiet strength. A pioneer in many ways, she was among the first African-American parents to send her daughter to an all-white school. With her husband, Clara served Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for 33 years.

Reaching 100 years is more than a birthday. It is a celebration of strength, wisdom, and generations of family and community touched along the way.

Osceola County is proud to celebrate residents like Ms. Thomas who represent the heart and spirit of our community.

NUC University - Florida Technical College has entered the next chapter in its institutional history with a new identity as Northbridge University, a strategic evolution that reflects the institution’s transformation, expanded academic offerings, and growing national presence.

As part of this evolution, the university is launching more than 30 new academic programs, with 10 scheduled to begin in 2026. These include new bachelor’s and doctoral degrees, as well as programs in emerging, technology-driven fields such as artificial intelligence.

El Distrito Escolar de Osceola establece una colaboración con BSN Sports y Nike para beneficiar a los programas deportivos integrales de las escuelas

Condado Osceola, FL - El Distrito Escolar de Osceola se complace en anunciar una nueva colaboración plurianual con BSN SPORTS y Nike que proporcionará un apoyo financiero significativo, ahorro de costes y oportunidades de imagen para programas deportivos de todo el distrito valorados en más de 1 millón de dólares en financiación directa, descuentos y recompensas para las escuelas. Según el acuerdo, el distrito recibirá un total de donaciones de $168,000 durante el primer año, con la posibilidad de recibir hasta $819,000 dólares durante el posible plazo de ocho años del contrato. Osceola School District enters into partnership with BSN Sports and Nike to benefit comprehensive High Schools’

Osceola County, FL - The Osceola School District is pleased to announce a new multi-year partnership with BSN SPORTS and Nike that will provide significant financial support, cost savings, and branding opportunities for athletic programs across the district valued at over $1 million in direct funding, discounts, and rewards for high schools. Under the agreement, the district will receive $168,000 in total donations during the first year, with the potential to receive up to $819,000 over the possible eight-year term of the contract. The majority of these funds will be directed straight to comprehensive high school athletics departments, helping to offset costs and enhance opportunities for student-athletes.

In addition to direct donations, the agreement delivers substantial savings for schools. Athletic programs throughout the district will receive a 40% discount on Nike brand uniforms and apparel, allowing schools to stretch budgets further while

providing high-quality gear for their teams. Each school will also earn between a 4% - 8% annual rebate from BSN SPORTS, based on total spend. These funds may be used to offset expenses related to uniforms, equipment, and other athletic needs. Also as part of the partnership, each comprehensive high school will receive $7,500 to support rebranding efforts with Nike, helping schools refresh their athletic identity and strengthen school pride.

Inversión de $46M de compañía de Taiwán en Puerto Rico

San Juan, PR - La gobernadora Jenniffer González Colón, junto al secretario del Departamento de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio (DDEC), Sebastián Negrón Reichard, anunciaron que la compañía biofarmacéutica global PharmaEssentia establecerá una nueva subsidiaria de manufactura en Puerto Rico, como parte de su estrategia de expansión y diversificación de operaciones para el mercado de Estados Unidos.

La inversión, estimada en $46 millones, permitirá el desarrollo de una instalación de manufactura biológica que servirá como centro estratégico para suplir la creciente demanda global de BESREMi® (ropeginterferon alfa-2b), un tratamiento innovador para enfermedades hematológicas, incluido el cáncer. Invest Puerto Rico (InvestPR), la organización encargada de promover la isla como destino de inversión, facilitó el establecimiento del proyecto en coordinación con las agencias gubernamentales pertinentes.

En su etapa inicial, el proyecto contempla la creación de sobre 90 empleos directos, con potencial de crecimiento conforme avance el desarrollo de la operación. La empresa proyecta obtener las aprobaciones regulatorias correspondientes para comenzar a operar en la isla en 2027.

"Esta inversión reafirma la posición de Puerto Rico como una jurisdicción confiable y competitiva dentro de Estados Unidos para la manufactura biofarmacéutica avanzada. Investment of $46M by Taiwanese Company in Puerto Rico

S an Juan, PR - Governor Jenniffer González Colón, along with the Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), Sebastián Negrón Reichard, announced that the global biopharmaceutical company PharmaEssentia will establish a new manufacturing subsidiary in Puerto Rico as part of its strategy to expand and diversify operations for the U.S. market.

The investment, estimated at $46 million, will enable the development of a biological manufacturing facility that will serve as a strategic hub to meet the growing global demand for BESREMi® (ropeginterferon alfa-2b), an innovative treatment for hematological diseases, including cancer. Invest Puerto Rico (InvestPR), the organization responsible for promoting the island as an investment destination, facilitated the establishment of the project in coordination with the relevant government agencies.

In its initial stage, the project plans to create over 90 direct jobs, with potential for growth as the operation progresses. The company expects to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals to begin operating on the island in 2027.

"This investment reaffirms Puerto Rico's position as a reliable and competitive jurisdiction within the United States for advanced biopharmaceutical manufacturing. We continue to attract projects that strengthen our economy, generate specialized jobs, and contribute to the security of the critical drug supply chain," said Governor González Colón.

For his part, the secretary of the DDEC, Negrón Reichard, emphasized that "Puerto Rico continues to establish itself as a center of advanced manufacturing with the talent, infrastructure, and regulatory expertise that global companies are looking for." "This investment from Asia demonstrates that our island is successfully competing for high-value projects with a long-term vision," he added.

The founder and chief executive officer of PharmaEssentia, Ko-Chung Lin, explained that the decision responds to a strategic priority of growth and global resilience. "We are proud to take this significant step toward establishing our manufacturing in U.S. territory, with Puerto Rico as a strategic hub to serve the U.S. market. It is an honor to serve as the 2026 Board Chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, and I am genuinely excited about the year ahead.

As we begin 2026, my focus will be on delivering stronger, measurable member value through more intentional connections, the development of a Value and Impact Scorecard, and a calendar of high-impact events that consistently moves relationships into results. We will be more deliberate about who we connect, why we connect, and what outcomes we are collectively driving whether that is by strategic partnerships, procurement introductions or mentorship relationships. The Impact Scorecard will serve as our

accountability framework: a clear, transparent way to track the Chamber’s influence and deliverables across key areas such as member engagement, business growth, procurement opportunities, and community impact. It will help ensure our programming is not simply active, but effective grounded in data, aligned with member priorities, and continuously improving.

Alongside this, we will elevate the quality and intentionality of our events prioritizing convenings that foster executive-level relationships, curated business matchmaking, and actionable learning. The Osceola Chamber hosts 101st Annual Meeting

Lake Buena Vista, FL - On Saturday, February 7th The Osceola Chamber celebrated their 101st Annual Meeting at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort with the theme “The Osceola Chamber 101 – Our Next Era.” The Chamber said goodbye to 2025 Chairman of the Board Tim Weisheyer, owner of Strategic Advantage Consulting and DBR Commercial Real Estate. On Saturday night, Chairman Weisheyer passed the ceremonial gavel to 2026 Chairwoman Rebekah Hurd, Director of Government Advocacy at AdventHealth Central Florida Division.

Prior to the evening’s formal program, guests gathered in the foyer and a separate ballroom for a cocktail reception that included opportunities for souvenir photos with Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck, as well as photos with a themed backdrop or AI Photobooth sponsored by Orlando Health and HCA Florida Healthcare, respectively, and administered by RTW Photography. Bars in the foyer and ballroom served themed mocktails and other bar standards.

Inside the ballroom, golden chandelier centerpieces adorned with red roses assembled by Kissimmee Florist elevated the elegant black, gold, and red color scheme of the evening. Attendees were also decked in black, gold, and red attire. Even Minnie Mouse sported a beautiful gold gown as she joined Jose Gonzalez, Director, Government & Industry Relations at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, onstage to welcome everyone to Coronado Springs and Walt Disney World.

Chairwoman Hurd and Chamber President & CEO John Newstreet opened the evening by thanking sponsors and all in attendance and looking forward the Chamber’s next era as a part of a larger coming era of growth and change county-wide.

Chairman Weisheyer shared that the 2025 Chairman's Award, an honor presented by the outgoing Chairman to an individual they believe has gone “above and beyond” in service to the Chamber – especially throughout the past year, would go to Michelle Chandler with ShenkelSchultz. Michelle was not present to accept the award in person but sent a video expressing her thanks.

Chairman Weisheyer and John Newstreet looked back at the year past, with special focus on the work of The Chamber Foundation, The Osceola Chamber’s 501(c)3 arm, and the Chamber’s five area councils, before a dinner of pan-seared flat iron steak, salad, and a Mickey-shaped lemon meringue tart.

For the first time since 2024, an induction was made to the Chamber Hall of Fame. With support from Orlando Health, Atlee Mercer, former Chamber Chairman, business owner, and civil servant, was added to the Hall of Fame as the sole 2026 inductee.

To recognize the importance of the Chamber’s value of Building Unity, the Unity Award was first awarded in 2019 to the late Guillermo “Bill” Hansen, editor of El Osceola Star Newspaper. In 2024, the award was renamed in Mr. Hansen’s honor. Finalists for the 2025 Guillermo Hansen Unity Award were Charles Castellon with Widerman Malek, Danny Ruiz Manrique with Total Industrial Supplies, and the Silver Spurs Club Board of Directors. Presented with support from HCA Florida Healthcare, the Unity Award went to Danny Ruiz Manrique who detailed his path to success in a new community.

The Linda Goodwin-Nichols Service Award is named after Linda Goodwin-Nichols, two-time Chairman of The Osceola Chamber Board of Directors and owner of Goodwin Realty & Associates for over 50 years. The 2025 finalists for the Linda Goodwin-Nichols Service Award were Martin Levert with Northbridge University, Twis Lizasuain with the Osceola County Board of Realtors, and Adrianna Sekula, owner of Solidarity Partners. The state of cannabis in Florida and the Nation: It’s a hot topic in 2026

Cannabis is poised to be a major issue in 2026, as a federal effort to lower its classification moves forward and some states face initiatives to roll back adult-use laws. In Florida, lawmakers are weighing changes to the state's medical marijuana policy.

On Dec. 18, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to fast-track the reclassification of marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. While the order neither legalizes marijuana for recreational use nor decriminalizes it at the federal level, the move formally acknowledges a significant shift in federal drug policy.

“Moving to Schedule III says that cannabis is not highly addictive; that there is medicinal value,” says Carla Ashburn, founder and CEO of Medical Marijuana Care of Florida, which operates clinics along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

H.R. 5371, a federal law set to go into effect on Nov. 12, bans intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids, including Delta-8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), Delta-10 THC, high-THCA flower, and HHC (hexahydrocannabinol). The ban follows a rise in health emergencies among children who consumed intoxicating hemp-based edibles.

Across the nation, campaigns to repeal adult-use marijuana laws are underway in Maine, Massachusetts, and Arizona. In Idaho, voters will consider a constitutional amendment that would limit future voter-led cannabis initiatives.

“It’s part of a larger trend of pushback against cannabis initiatives,”

says Shanel Lindsay, an attorney and cannabis policy expert with the Parabola Center for Law and Policy.

The Florida Department of State announced on Feb. 1 that a constitutional amendment initiative to legalize adult-use marijuana fell short of the number of verified signatures required to qualify for the November ballot. A similar proposal failed to secure the required 60 percent voter approval in 2024.

The Florida Legislature is considering two bills that would extend protections to parents and employees who legally use medical marijuana, measures Ms. Ashburn says she supports.

Filed during the current legislative session, House Bill 1061 and Senate Bill 130, known as the Parental Rights of Qualified Patients, would prohibit courts from denying or restricting custody, visitation, or parenting time solely based on a parent’s status as a qualified medical marijuana patient. Senate Bill 136 would grant job protections to public employees and job applicants who legally use cannabis treatments.

Valencia College to offer free tax preparation help

Orlando, FL - Just in time for tax season, Valencia College accounting students and professors will offer free tax preparation help to the public on selected Saturdays in February, March and April.

Volunteer tax preparers will be preparing and filing tax returns at Valencia College’s East Campus. The tax sessions will be held in Building 7, room 113. The free services will be offered on a walk-in basis on the following Saturdays: Feb. 21, March 7, March 28, April 4 and April 11 from 8 a.m. to noon.

This is the 23rd straight year that Valencia College’s East Campus has provided free tax help to the community. The East Campus is located at 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail in Orlando.

New this year for Osceola Campus tax prep sessions only: Valencia College’s Osceola Campus in Kissimmee will provide income tax assistance on Feb. 21 and March 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but for the first time, interested residents must make an appointment in advance. The tax-prep sessions will be held in Building 3, room 100 at the Osceola Campus, which is located at 1800 Denn John Lane in Kissimmee.

Arrestos por investigación por homicidio

Osceola County, FL - On November 15th, 2024, at 2:45 am, The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible traffic crash at the intersection of Greenup Street and Smith Street, in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the lifeless body of the driver, a male who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, in the driver seat of a Range Rover. The immediate response from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office included the deployment of their Homicide and Forensic Units, who quickly arrived to investigate the crime scene. Forensic specialists processed the area, gathering critical evidence, while the Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the victim’s remains.

The deceased was later identified as 20-year-old Kashorn Armand. Following a thorough examination, the Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide. Preliminary findings by Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives indicated that this was not a random act of violence; instead, it appeared to be a premeditated murder linked to organized gang activity. Given the complexity and severity of the case, the Homicide Unit collaborated closely with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Crime Laboratory Analysts and Forensic Division to ensure that all evidence was processed with the utmost detail.

Over several months, detectives worked diligently uncovering crucial information that led to the identification of three primary suspects in the murder of Kashorn Armand: Ta’Shard Smith (18), Sincere McKenzie (18), and Cornelius Walls (21). At the time of the murder, Smith and McKenzie were juveniles. Their involvement

suggested a deeper criminal conspiracy, further complicating the narrative surrounding Armand’s tragic death.

The investigation was presented to Assistant State Attorneys for further legal action. By January 2026, the case reached a pivotal moment when it was brought before a Grand Jury for indictment by the State Attorney’s Office. After careful consideration of the evidence and testimonies, the Grand Jury indicted all three suspects for their roles in this gang motivated homicide, and arrest warrants were consequently issued with gang enhancements.

The U.S. Marshals’ Office assisted with locating and apprehending Ta’Shard Smith, who was still at large. He was arrested and booked into the Osceola County jail on February 3, 2026. Meanwhile, Cornelius Walls and Sincere McKenzie had already been taken into custody in separate state correction facilities and were promptly served their homicide warrants.

This tragic case illustrates the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in addressing gang-related violence and highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to uncovering the full truth behind this crime and ensuring accountability for those involved.

A confrontation occurred when Mr. Duda obtained a handgun and saw the victim. Nicholas Brank was shot and killed, as he was unarmed and unable to defend himself. Through an intense investigation by homicide detectives, video surveillance and a witness were located as well as the murder weapon.

The first landmark service celebration took place during the Disneyland Tencennial in 1965, when Walt and Roy O. Disney honored original cast members who had been with the park since opening day. Walt personally presented those inaugural awards and set the tone for a culture of appreciation that remains at the heart of the cast experience today.

Every destination adds its own unique touch to the celebration, but the heart of the tradition remains the same: recognizing the passion, commitment, and longevity of the cast members who make Disney… Disney.

Walt Disney World celebrates Its East Coast magic makers

For the cast members who bring the wonder, heart, and happiness to Disney year after year, and in many cases decade after decade, Service Celebration is our chance to roll out the red carpet at Walt Disney World Resort ... literally!

And spoiler alert: there were A LOT of happy tears, hugs, “remember when?” moments, and plenty of celebration traditions (including the beloved legendary shrimp!) that always make the night unforgettable.

A Red-Carpet Night at Magic Kingdom Park

Magic Kingdom was glowing a little brighter for this year’s east coast Service Celebration, and not just because of the fireworks. Cast members gathered with their loved ones to celebrate milestone anniversaries from 10 to 50 years.

For many, this night is a highlight of their Disney journey. For others? It's basically a family reunion.

Elaine West Grimes, a 50-year cast member at 50’s Prime Time Café, reflected on her remarkable journey with heartfelt emotion: “Disney has felt like home for 50 years. Each day has given me the chance to make magic for our guests. Celebrating tonight reminds me why I started and why I’ve stayed.

These cast members and our guests are like family, and together we keep the magic going.”

Where Careers Grow as Big as the Magic

This night isn’t just about celebrating years. It’s about celebrating a workplace where those years add up.

Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle knows a thing or two about growing a career at Disney. He started as an entry-level engineer back in 1990 and went on to help open Disney’s Animal Kingdom, lead major operational teams, and even support the development and opening of Shanghai Disney Resort. Today, his Disney journey spans more than 35 years and has taken him around the world, all while working alongside the cast members who create the magic. He shared: “Our cast members shape the magic our guests feel every day,” Jeff said, “and this celebration is a way of saying, ‘thank you,’ for decades of extraordinary guest service, and the legacy they continue to build. Tonight, I am celebrating 35 years with Disney, and it feels great to reflect on all we have done together. It truly is a magical evening.”

Melissa Valiquette, Vice President, Park Operations, Development & Industrial Engineering, celebrating 30 years with the company, echoed that same message: “The dedication and care our cast members show to one another and to our guests are what bring our stories to life every day. We are proud to honor not only their years of service, but also the countless moments of magic they have created and sustained across generations.”

Generations of Magic Makers (Literally) One of the most emotional parts of the evening? Seeing families who have built Disney careers across generations.

Recently retired 30-year cast member Kimmie Sue Hall celebrated the night with her son, also a cast member. “Disney is part of our family’s heritage. Sharing these traditions with my son and passing that legacy forward is incredibly meaningful. Disney isn’t just where we worked. It’s where values, stories, and a love for creating happiness are passed from one generation to the next.”

A Night of Characters, Music & Celebration Cast members enjoyed after-hours park access, rare character moments, live entertainment, private attractions, and special touches designed just for the honorees.

For Walt Disney Imagineer, Diego Parras, the evening brought back memories of where his own journey started: “Thinking back to starting at Star Tours at just 17, it just amazes me how much this 35-year journey has shaped my life. This company has given me opportunities beyond anything I imagined, and celebrating with the cast members who shaped my journey is an honor.”
