Each month, the OrWellbeing team will share tips, ideas, and guidance to help us all try to navigate the digital world safely. At Orwell Park, we want pupils to enjoy technology, know how to use it wisely while keeping themselves happy, healthy, and safe. Thesummerholidaysareabrilliantchanceforchildrentorest,play,beoutside,see friends,getbored,becreativeand,realistically,spendtimeonscreens.


Theresearchpictureisnuanced.TheUKChiefMedicalOfficershavepreviously advisedthatthereisnotenoughevidencetosetonesimpledailyscreen-timelimitfor allchildrenandyoungpeople.Instead,theyencouragefamiliestolookatthewhole child:aretheysleepingwell,movingtheirbodies,spendingtimewithothers, keepingupwithhobbies,andmanagingtheirmood?Ofcom’srecentresearchshows whythismatters.Nearlyfourintenchildrenaged8–17saytheirscreentimeistoo high.TheRoyalCollegeofPaediatricsandChildHealthalsohighlightsconcerns aroundonlineharms,persuasivedesignfeaturesandthewayappsandgamesare deliberatelybuilttokeepchildrenengaged.
Thiscanbecomemoredifficultinthesummerholidaysbecausetheusualrhythmof schooldisappears.Withoutthestructureandschoolroutines,childrencanslideinto longersessionsofgaming,scrollingorvideowatching.Thatdoesnotmeanparents needtobanscreensentirely.Infact,acalmandrealisticapproachoftenworksbetter thansuddenstrictrules,whichcancreateargumentsandmakescreensfeeleven moredesirable!
Ahelpfulstartingpointistoagreeasummerscreenroutine,ratherthannegotiating fromscratcheveryday.Childrenoftencopebetterwhentheyknowwhattoexpect. Forexample,familiesmightdecidethatmorningsbeginscreen-freeuntilchildrenare dressed,haveeatenbreakfastandhavedonesomethingactive,helpfulorcreative. Screensmightthenbeusedatagreedtimes,withaclearendpoint.Forolderchildren, involvingthemintheplanisimportant:“Whatfeelsreasonable?”“Whatdoyouthink istoomuch?”“Howwillyouknowwhenyouneedabreak?”
Itcanalsohelptoprotectafewscreen-free“anchors”intheday.Thesemightinclude mealtimes,thehourbeforebed,shortcarjourneys,dogwalks,familyactivitiesortime withfriends.Thebedtimeboundaryisparticularlyimportantbecausesleepisoneof theclearestareaswhereexcessiveorlate-nightscreenusecancausedifficulties. Chargingphones,tabletsandgamingdevicesoutsidebedroomsovernightisasimple changethatcanmakeasignificantdifference.


Parentsmayalsowanttothinkaboutthetypeofscreentime.Avideocallwith grandparents,acodingproject,afilmwatchedtogether,aphotographychallengeor arecipevideofollowedbyrealcookingisverydifferentfromhoursofsolitary scrolling.Oneusefulfamilyphraseis:createbeforeyouconsume.Beforepassive screentime,childrencouldbeencouragedtomakesomething,movetheirbody,read, helpwithajob,practisemusic,build,draw,cookorgooutside.
Foryoungerchildren,visualroutinescanworkwell:“firstlunch,thengarden,then iPad”.Forolderchildren,amorecollaborativeapproachisusuallybetter.Theyare morelikelytorespondtobeingtrustedthancontrolled,althoughtheystillneed boundaries.Itisreasonabletosay,“Wearenotanti-screen,butwearepro-sleep, pro-freshair,pro-friendshipandpro-reallife.”


Agreescreentimesinadvance,ratherthandecidingintheheatofthemoment. Keepbedroomsasscreen-freeaspossible,especiallyovernight. Buildindailymovementbeforelongerscreensessions.
Useparentalcontrols,butdonotrelyontheminsteadofconversations. Askchildrentoshowyouwhattheyenjoyonline;curiosityisoftenmoreeffective thancriticism.
Encourage“swapactivities”:aftergaming,dosomethingphysical,socialor creative.
Modelthehabitswewantchildrentodevelop,evenimperfectly. Avoidusingscreensastheonlyrewardorremovalofscreensastheonly consequence.
Talkabouthowscreensmakechildrenfeel:calm,inspired,cross,tired,leftout, overstimulated?
Havearesetdaywhenneeded,withoutmakingitfeellikeapunishment.
Thesummerholidaysdonotneedtobescreen-freetobehealthy.Agoodsummeris onewherechildrenhavetimetorest,connect,move,learn,playandenjoysome independence.Screenscanbepartofthat,buttheyshouldnotquietlytakeoverthe wholeday.Thebestapproachisusuallysteady,honestandbalanced:clearboundaries, sharedconversations,andplentyofattractivealternatives.

“Bethechangeyouwishtoseeintheworld”MahatmaGandhi
Asthefinalhoursoftermloom,wearefacedwithaprocesswhichhappensinallschools,allorganisations, andinallnationsontheplanet.Theprocessisoneofchange;movingfromonephasetoanother,some elementsplanned,someinvoluntary,allconsequential.Asweface,braceandprepareforourchangeof academicyear,weshouldbearinmindthewordsofJohnCMaxwell:
“Changeisinevitable:growthisoptional”
Weshouldalsounderstandthatwhilstchangemusthappen,itshouldbeaprocesswhichweembrace, whilstacceptingthatanyexcitementmaywellbebalancedbynervesortrepidation.Weallknowthose forwhomchange,anychange,isdifficult,andourroleistosupportanyanxietyandhelpotherstolook forward.
Perhapsbeforewelookforwardwelookback;wereflectonayearwithasmanytriumphsandsuccesses asfailures,andwelearntousethosefailurestogrowfrom,touse,andtoriseonsteppingstonesto success.Everythingwehavedone,wecanlearnfrom,anditwouldbefoolishnottotakethetimetolook backandsavourtheopportunitytobequiet,andreflect.
Thenwelookforward;thisisdefinitelyexciting!Theopportunitiesahead,thenewventures,thenew friends,thenewsubjectsandactivities,thenewdorms,andthenewperspectivesonlife.Wemustmove atourownandyetothers’pace,andtakeotherswithusinaninclusiveandwelcomingmanner.

HenryFrancisLytewasontosomethingthere;hewas,perhaps,contemplatingasomewhat greaterchange;moreliketheGreatTranslation,buthewaswelcomingandgratefulallthe same.Aswelookforwardtoourownprocessofchange,werememberaboveallourvalues; howareothersfeeling,andwhatcanwedotohelp?Serviceinallthingsisourgreatest challenge,aswellasreward.

TheOrWellbeingHubstartedwithasimpleidea:ourpupils’wellbeingshouldbe rightattheheartofschoollife.
Weknowchildrendotheirbestwhentheyfeelhappy,safe,calmandunderstood. Whenpupilsfeelgroundedandhavetoolstohelpthemmanageworries, emotions,friendshipsandchallenges,theyaremuchmorereadytolearn,grow andenjoyschool.
TheideafortheHubgrewintwoways.Firstly,wewantedtocreateasafeand welcomingspaceforpupils;somewherecalm,friendlyandsupportive.Aplace wheretheycouldpause,talk,reflect,resetandfeellistenedtoandwherethe‘five waystowellbeing’could.
Secondly,wewantedwellbeingtobepartofeverydayschoollifeandnotjust somethingwethinkaboutonspecialdays.Thisledtothedevelopmentofour OrWellbeingStrategy,whichsetsouthowwellbeingiswoventhroughthewhole school,inclassrooms,conversations,routinesandrelationships.
Wealsowantedtohelppupilsunderstandthemselvesaslearners.Howwefeel canaffecthowwelearn.Beingabletoregulate,manageemotions,understand others,organiseourselvesandkeepgoingwhenthingsfeeltrickyallhelpsusin theclassroomandbeyond.TheOrWellbeingHubbringsallofthistogether.

ItbeganwithCarolineBruntandJoCoventry-Kingchattingthroughavision, dreamingofagreatspacetoembodytheseideasandwonderingwherethis specialspacecouldbe.Stepbystep,thoseideasbecameplansandthoseplans becametheOrWellbeingHubthatwearesoexcitedtoopentoday.
Now,wehaveafantasticspacewherewellbeingandlearningsitsidebyside.Itis aplaceforcalm,connection,reflectionandgrowth.
TheOrWellbeingHubisbuiltaroundasimplebelief:happychildrenlearnwell, safechildrengrowinconfidence,andsupportedchildrenflourish.
Everychildisdifferent.Eachonehastheirownstrengths,talents,worries,hopes andwaysoflearning.Somechildrenneedaquietspacetoreset,someneed encouragementtobelieveinthemselves,andsomeneedatrustedadulttohelp themfindtheirway.Whenchildrenfeelvalued,understoodandinspired,theyare muchmoreabletogrowinconfidenceandachievetheirbest.
Wearesoproudofhowfarthisspacehascome,andwecannotwaittoseehow itsupportsourpupilsnowandintheyearsahead.
