From the
Commodore Hi Members It’s been 6 months since I became Commodore and it’s gone fast. The club has gone through some changes since I took over. The first was the appointment of a club manager and we are now 6 months into that with a lot of improvements around the place. The grounds and car parks have been tidied up with a lot of people commenting that it feels more like a club now and it’s nice to see some nice plants and tidy tables for us to sit on when we come down. Steve and the guys also put a great Australia Day on with many members telling me it was the best function we have ever had at the club. Steve has also organised a wedding fair for late February to help boost the functions and to promote the club to new people. We now have a new beer system in the bar that delivers crisp cold drinks and eliminates most of the wastage that occurs in most bars so we can be more efficient in that area. We as a committee have been focused on improving the club but have been hit with some maintenance issues that have taken funds but not a lot of things to be seen as improvements. They have taken a portion of our budget and we are now working to get the toilets quoted to be improved. The galley has been working well with Paula and her crew doing a great job when we are open for meals. We are now open at 12pm on Sundays for members to come down and have some light lunch and an ice cold beverage and then continue on to our normal closing time. We hope all the members are aware of the 12pm opening and encourage you all to come down to give it a try. We will be changing to a lighter menu with burgers, chips and wraps and that sort of food for lunch, with our full menu starting around 4pm. We now have the new gas storage completed so that gives us room now to stack unused tables where the old gas bottles were. With the new committee having 6 months under their belt, the management meetings and sections are running very smoothly and they are all looking forward to the next 6 months to complete a very good year. The club numbers are going well with our Open Day coming up second week in March to boost the club and get some of your friends to join at half price nomination. We encourage you to tell all your friends about the great times you have at the club. As mentioned in a previous report, we are in a time where we are moving from a medium size club into a large club and some adjustments have to be planned for the future. A suggestion box will be put into the bar over the next few weeks for members to put comments to give us some ideas to help with the transition. Thank you and I hope to see you all down the club. Angling Report November 2015 Beach Fishing Report

With an awesome forecast for the weekend of the November beach fishing competition, competitors were all geared up to spread right along our coastline. A few ventured down south as far as Augusta and some as far north as Geraldton, whilst the majority stayed around the Wedge Island to Jurien region. The weather was great, almost too good actually, as the 38 degrees in the middle of the day on Saturday was almost too hot to handle. This being said, a few made the choice to swim rather than fish during the middle of the day, and for the first time in a long while you could fish all night in boardshorts and a shirt.
The December beach fishing competition was held only two weeks after the November competition, due to the swap with boat fishing to avoid the demersal closure. With the weather forecast looking pretty average, we still had pretty good numbers fishing and 12 eventually weighing in. A few more fished, but struggled to overcome the blustery conditions.
As usual, fishing the Jurien Bay jetty just after midnight was an interesting event in itself, as Terry Bell and myself were unloading the car, a completely naked woman strolled off the jetty without a care in the world….didn’t have a bag, or mobile, or towel… nothing!!! We proceeded to head to the end of the jetty for a quick fish, and I overheard a “guy” talking about how hard it is to be a drug dealer and how it’s an 8 hour a day job….maybe time for old mate to get a real job. Fishing wise, most faired reasonably well on the Saturday, although with the wind turning northerly, only a few managed to add to their bag on the Sunday. Bronwyn Gaston landed a lovely Skippy of 1.013kg, Greg O’Keefe caught the furtherest north Salmon (Cervantes) that I’ve seen for a long while. Although it was only a small fish of 0.643kg, it was nevertheless very welcome indeed. Quite a few members caught Garfish this competition, with Clive Powell weighing the heaviest at a very respectable 0.297kg. All up, there were 20 members, including two Ladies and a Mini Junior that weighed-in, which was great to see. Results are outlined below. November 2015 Results No. of Species

Terry Bell, Mitchell Bell and myself all fished the Swan River for something different and found it challenging. Digging for bloodworms for the night session in torrential rain wasn’t exactly much fun, in fact it proved too much for Mitchell who gave up and headed for the sanctuary of the warm car. It was a complete contrast to November’s heat, with the wind and rain making it feel more like the middle of winter. Although it was tough digging the worms, the reward was a number of nice Yellowfin whiting after dark, although these were small in comparison to John Lebeter’s monster fish of 0.373kg. Mitchell also landed a very nice Black Bream of 0.621kg further upstream in the river, and Bronwyn Gaston landed the only Mulloway of a healthy 2.032kg. It was notable that lots of competitors had nice sized Tarwhine in their bags. Not much more of note, other than Clive Powell’s nice Sweep….Ricko, you need to keep your spots better guarded!! It was good to see a few new Ladies and Juniors fish this month, although not all were able to catch something to weigh-in…. keep trying, it will come with perseverance. Full results are below. With only three competitions held so far in the season, already we are seeing a very competitive top section, and very good to see a few different names up there. I’m predicting it will be tight all year. The next competition is scheduled for the 16th/17th January 2016. One last note, the AAA State Estuary Championships were cancelled due to the fish kills in Cockburn Sound. Plans are being made to run this in around the February 2016 timeframe. I’ll keep you updated. Results are outlined on the following page.

With the average weather came average fishing and eventually average results for most members. This time competitors were more closely bunched, spread only from only around Fremantle to Jurien Bay. As the weekend panned out, the weather and fishing was definitely better further north, with almost all of the heaviest coming from either Wedge or Jurien Bay.

All up, we had 20 members and 2 visitors weigh-in, including a few members who normally don’t fish beach competitions, which was good to see. One of these was Lynn Malone, who took out the Ladies. January 2016 Beach Fishing Report The weather forecast for the weekend of the January 2016 Beach Fishing competition was similar to what we’ve had for the last few competitions, in that Saturday was an exceptional day and Sunday had very strong winds in by around 9am. This meant that is was very important to take your opportunities early on Saturday morning, and those that did that were the ones towards the top of the results board at the end.

One last note, the AAA State Estuary Championships were cancelled due to the fish kills in Cockburn Sound. Plans are being made to run this in May 2016. I’ll keep you updated.
Unfortunately, after Saturday morning, it seemed to go quiet for most people. An example of this was that I’d heard rumours that Jeff Porter had 7 species by 9am Saturday morning, but at the weigh-in on Sunday, he still had 7 species, leading me to believe it was hard going for him after Saturday morning. Others that started off well were Mitchell Bell and Tyla Gillepsie, with Mitchell ending up with a nice bag of 9 species and Tyla firmly in the top 5. But the real talk of the competition was Chris Gaston (Kiwi) and his fishing mate Rob Meneguz, our club sponsor from Getaway Outdoors. They decided to fish the Wagoe/Kalbarri Cliff area, heading up there on Friday. Kiwi ended up with a very nice bag of 9 species, with a fair bit of weight as well. His bag included a Surf Parrotfish of 2.865kg, a Golden Trevally of just under a kilo, a Sweetlip of 1.731kg and an outstanding Wirrah of 1.097kg. Rob had a nice Spangled Emperor of 1.821kg, a Tailor od 1.594kg and a Surf Parrotfish of 3.971kg. Not surprisingly, Kiwi comfortably took out the Men’s section.

Power Boat Report Hi Everyone Our January planned trip was an overnight stay in Rottnest Island. We had 5 boats take the trip over and we beach moored in Bathurst Bay with boat on a mooring in the bay. The weather was fantastic for the trip over and the ocean was kind which allowed us to maintain 20 -22 knots for the crossing. Once we had all secured the boats Christine and I decided to go off for a leisurely bike ride around to Little Salmon Bay. Well the temperature was higher than forecast and the humidity was high so a nice bike ride turned into a survival trip with every bay visited on the way we stopped for a swim. Well it’s the bus next time and bikes are for short trips. We arrived back at the boats and the rest of the guys had their water toys pumped up and ready to go. Dionne and Steve brought along large inflatable donut with seats for four people. Well after a few drinks we decided to see how many did fit in.

After legs and arms were pointing in many different directions we eventually had 9 people on board. We got to know each other a little better after that. There should be a warning not for use for kids over the age of 40! We also had a very large inflatable golden swan courtesy of Loraine and Graham floating around with several riders enjoying a wine or three. After all that hard work we had a BBQ dinner on the foreshore. Unfortunately all the BBQ’s were not working. Not very good especially because of the fees we pay to access the island and use their facilities. Lucky enough I bought along my Webber Baby Q which did the job. After dinner we headed to the Governors Sport Bar to listen to a live band and again enjoy another drink. All in or it was a great weekend again on Rottnest and looking forward to our next visit to the island. Maybe they have the BBQ’s working by then?
Australia Day Skyshow Overnight Trip Once again the Power Boating Section had a trip to see the Skyshow from the Swan River. With the day after being a work day, as well as the function at the Club, the four boats attending this year was down on prior years numbers. The four families (Steve & Rach, Graeme & Lorraine, Brian & Ava with Darius, Katelyn & Chloe and Pete, Ros & Ryan) met at the Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club at lunch time. Three of us made a direct trip, while the fourth, our trip leader, took a scenic tour after missing their freeway exit. (It pays to check what time the freeway exits are being closed Rach.) Once we’d all gathered together inside the club’s grounds, we popped upstairs to the bar for quenching refreshment & to admire the view before launching the boats. We timed our launch to co-incide with the arrival of the sea breeze, so it was initially a little bit bumpy on the water. We enjoyed a good trip up the river (quite comfortable with the breeze behind us) & were able to have a little look at the soon to be opened Elizabeth Quay (or Betty’s Jetty as I’ve heard it referred to) from the water as we passed by. Our trip leader found us a place to moor together at the eastern end of the exclusion zone. We had to abandon our original plans to all rafting up together as it was too rough. We ended up having three boats rafted together & one behind. It was then time to relax & pass the time until the fireworks were due to start. Peter was the first one in the water, off to retrieve one of Graeme’s escaped fenders. The water was pleasantly warm, so a few of us ended up having a swim / play in the water. For our boat, it was how we were able to make it over to the rafted up boats. During the afternoon, we all discovered a few things we didn’t have with us that would’ve made the trip more comfortable. On our boat it was the water toys & decorations, on Steve & Rach’s boat, it would’ve been a frying pan to cook Steve’s sausages in (although a kettle can perform this task perfectly well, I’m not so sure I’d been wanting a cuppa afterwards!). We had plenty of entertainment, from that organised by the Skyshow organisers, as well as the other’s that came to watch. We had a large party boat moored nearby, so their guests provided plenty of entertainment, on the party boat & their water toys. There was also a bit of a Water Police chase (to catch up to a boat about to enter the exclusion zone after it was closed to the public). The official entertainment included some spectacular air show manoeuvres by the various aircraft, and the sail past by the restored old wooden boat, which
included Kiewa, Ron & Dora’s lovingly restored boat. Of course there were the fireworks too, which were spectacular. After the show the Hawkers & Macauley’s raced off to Claisebrook Cove to secure a berth for the night. The Hindley’s & Olivers took their time and were still able to secure a berth. After enjoying each others company for a nightcap, we retired to our own boats for the night. It was a little rough in the earlier part of the night, due to the wash from passing boats in the river, but otherwise comfortable. Wednesday morning saw us take advantage of the nearby coffee shops (no sausage flavoured cuppas for the Olivers!) & send Rach off to work. After a leisurely morning, we returned to PFSYC to retrieve our boats & head home. Definitely a trip to be repeated. Special Thanks to the PFSYC for the use of their facilities. Dive Report • This month was quite busy • The divers headed off to Point Peron for our annual crabbing weekend. Cockburn sound is still closed for crabbing so again the group headed off in different directions and didn’t fair too well. The weather also went from 37 degrees to 23 with thunder and lightning so none of the usual water activities were enjoyed. It was still a great social weekend and everyone managed to get a crab lunch.

• The social event was an evening in the new Elizabeth Quay and a visit to Embargo Container Bar. • Open water PADI training has commenced and going well. This seems to be attracting new members to the club. • Club charter on 16th Jan was amazing with Port Jackson Sharks sighted, great viz and fair weather. The next is booked for 13th February and we are hoping for good weather again.
Boat Fishing Report Hi Members February comp was held on a Sunday due to insufficient interest on the Saturday, it was well attended with 8 boats heading out and around 20 members fishing. Some good fish caught as you can see by the photos. Men’s was taken out by terry bell, ladies by Lyn Malone the mini juniors by Cruze Marsden. The vets I’m unsure of as I’m up north doing this, it may have been the new guy Graham who fished with his son and weighed in some great fish. Next comp is at Jurien Bay it is also our patrons cup which we have against the Maac. Sorry for the brief report but doing this on my phone which sucks. See you next month. Sailing Report After five years of exemplary service, Geoff James finally stepped down as Rear Commodore Sail. As the newly elected RC, I hope that I can bring the same level of dedication and contribution that Geoff has shown to both his Section and his Club. I’m certainly grateful that Geoff and his wife Rita remain active members of the Sailing Section and will look to them for guidance as I learn the ropes. The Australia Day Cruise to Rockingham saw three yachts from ORSSC (Artemis, Sunbird and Panache) join up with three from Hillarys Yacht Club for a sail down to the Cruising Yacht Club in Rockingham on Saturday, followed by stopover at the Fremantle Sailing Club on the return trip. I understand the hospitality shown by the two host clubs to the visitors was outstanding, highlighting ORSSC’s reciprocal arrangements with Western Australian clubs On 30 January, ORSSC Series C - Race 1 was sailed in strong southerly winds with threatening thunderstorms. After delaying the start to let a storm front pass, six yachts competed, two of which withdrew during the race. My thanks to Mike Eldridge for the ride on Sapphire, and for graciously retiring when yours truly started feeding the fishh.
ORSSC started significantly behind HYC on points, and won the day convincingly. However the comeback fell short, with HYC holding on to the North Coast Series Regatta Trophy for another year. Final score for the series, HYC 320, ORSSC 405, (lowest score winning). The wind-up was hosted by HYC, with ORSSC’s Commodores Gary Bell and HYC’s Simon Davenport presenting the Trophy to the HYC Sailing Captain. ORSSC sailors commiserated by ringing the bell.
