From the
Commodore Hi Members, Well the Season is open now and we had a great Opening Day at the club on Sunday 11/10/15 with a lot of members coming down to the club to enjoy the facilities of the club on that day. The weather gods looked down on us that day as we had great sunshine and low winds for the sail past with a great collection on boats and members getting involved and thanks to those members with the water guns as I was getting hot standing on the bow !!! We had a pet zoo and face painting for the Kids and a sausage sizzle for everyone and a band that did a great job in the afternoon for the grownups. The club is gearing up for a really big year and with our new club manager Steve Snell now in full swing lots of things are starting to take shape. All the grounds have been cleaned up and the shade sails are back up so on the weekend sundowners we can all enjoy the afternoons with a nice cold beverage. All the new committee are settling into their roles now so please if there is anything from the sections that you require please give them a call or an email. We now have a new wine list available in the bar with some very nice wines at very reasonable prices so come on down to give them a try. Please remember that with the new card system you need to show your card at the bar for service and as of the 31st October if you have not renewed you membership you will be unable to buy a drink at the bar so if you have not yet renewed please do so now. Angling Report - Beach Fishing With a reasonably average forecast at the beginning of the week, it was fair to say a lot of members were not exactly relishing the thought of hitting the beach for our competition on the 17th/18th October. Fortunately, as the week drew to an end the forecast looked much better and the weekend was actually not too bad weather wise. That being said, the weed situation at most spots that people fished was far from favourable, with everyone really struggling to fish at times. There were mixed reports amongst competitors, some having a great weekend fishing wise, whilst others are resigned to the fact that this may be one of their dropped competitions for the year. We had members spread from Augusta in the south to Port Gregory in the north, with around 20 fishing and eventually 16 weighing in, which is great to see and we hope the trend continues. From all reports, it seemed as though more than a fair few beverages were consumed along with the fishing with the best story coming from Chris Hoult, who managed to leave a bucket with his nights catch on the beach, which he only realised once he was too far away to return.

A few of the stand out fish included a new club record Banded Sweep of 1.587kg caught by Richard Platt, Clive Powell again showing he in the Yellow-finned Whiting master with a fish of 0.385kg and Peter Osborne landing a rare Flounder, which he only realised once he de-weeded his line. Mick Lock managed a just size Breaksea Cod, but of course it was inside the demersal closure period, so had to be released‌.bad luck Mick!!! Results wise, Tyla Gillespie has continued his good form from the end of last season, by narrowly defeating fishing partner Mitchell Bell (pity about that Rock Mullet eh Mitch!!). Mitchell had more species and weight, but Tyla had more heaviest, which enabled him to get over the line by less than 1 point. We also had our first Mini Junior for a while, with young Luca Gugliotta fishing with his father Rob and weighing in a couple of nice fish. We hope to Luca and other Juniors getting out there and giving it a go for the rest of the season. As you may be aware, we are discontinuing with the Mid-Month competition, but we are now having a Beach Fishing competition every month. Angling Report - Boat Fishing Hi Members, The new season of boat fishing has started with our two day comp held on the last weekend in September so it would not co-inside with the AFL grand final. 16 competitors signed on and 16 weighed in. 6 boats went out in some reasonable conditions.Two competitors fished off the beach. The veterans was won by Coin Green with 58 points. Ladies by Alyce Wettinger with 80 points. And the men’s was taken out by Tony O’Sullivan with 110 points. Some great fish were caught including a Taylor by Chris Gaston caught of the beach weighing 2.322kg and a mulloway caught by Mick Lock of 7.13 kg.
Other notable fish were a Harlequin caught by Tony O’Sullivan of 1.981kg and a baldchin grouper of 2.351kg caught by Terry Bell. This has been a great start to our new season and the next comp will be on the first Saturday of November and all club members are welcome to join in. We have a few fish not sponsored so come on board and get behind the fishing section. Come along to our meeting held in the Masons bar on the first Wednesday of the month and meet some keen anglers. New Website is now Online! Please check out our new website at http://www.orssc.asn.au – a new fresh design with growing information and a free trade directory for members with businesses to advertise. The new website was started in mid 2014 as part of improving the club image and also to help generate new business in membership and weddings / function bookings. We have a great location, great facilities and staff, but the website was looking dated and wasn’t being kept up to date (with the exception of 1 or 2 sections) Many comments were made by members and visitors about how the website needed improving and modernising, so thats what we did. Development stalled at the end of 2014, mainly due to the website creator being too busy with their own business and time spent maintaining / troubleshooting the new membership system at the club. Development was then picked up again a couple of months ago and given a hard push to get the structure and content in a useable and useful state. Which is where we are today. There was a lot of side work to be done with items such as the weddings and functions packages, which needed completely rewriting and laying out – Thanks to our Chef Paula who’s husband completed this in time for me to include the info and brochures on the website. There was also a huge learning curve for me (very amateur website developer!) to get the website looking how we wanted it to look, with much hacking of code, learning on the fly and searching for plugins to help cope with content creation by the sections. I’m happy to say we have a number of volunteers who are willing to maintain their sections website ‘section’ so we should see fresh content being added often. Power Boat Report Hi all boaties, Our August planned Club Crawl to Fremantle Sailing Club and East Fremantle Yacht Club was cancelled due to bad weather. As usual the working week leading up to the day was ideal and watching the web site Seabreeze.com constantly didn’t help. Our trip to our overnight stay at Riverside Resort in Mandurah in September was again affected slightly by the weather. Weather reports were not suitable for boating so we continued on with our planned trip to Ravenswood Hotel for lunch and then to Riverside resort Yunderup via car. We had very good participation of 34 members on this trip. Although one cheeky boatie come diver mentioned to me he had taken his boat and arrived at the hotel safe and sound and it was calm sailing which I totally believed. Yep fell for that one well and truly. Not mentioning any names but it was John Heckles. We all arrived at the Ravenswood around 12.30am and sat down to a big lunch and a few drinks and watched the Dockers beat Sydney Swans. We had two large tables right in front of the big screen so we settled in to an enjoyable afternoon. We arrived at the Riverside Resort and checked in. The accommodation was very good and would recommend the resort to anybody. Some of the 3 bedroom units overlooked the man made lake stocked with large Koi fish, very relaxing. That night most of the group meet up at the resorts Club Room/games room. We all joined in and played a game of Headbanz which is a card with the answer on a head band which you cannot see and you are to guess who or what you are through a series of questions. As the game progressed

and the questions flowed, the players became funnier and the laughing became louder. We all had a great time. We played as an overall knock out round and overall winner was Sindy Dowden. The prize a small and modest gold cup trophy and a bottle of wine. Sindy was so happy that she drank from the shot glass size trophy for the rest of the night. The next day a few of us headed home after having breakfast in their rooms while a group of us had brunch at Dolphin Quay. A big thanks to Mary and Corrie for organinzing the resort and the Mandurah offshore fishing sailing club for the boats which unfortunately we did not need. Opening Day 11th October with five power boat section boats attended the Sail Past. Lead by Terry Machin the boats cruised past the VIP boats. The boats were decorated with colourful flags and two boats decided to bring along water guns to bring a bit of light relief. The crew on Savannah, skippered by Phil Gallagher went a step further and dressed up as a pirate and wenches who impressed the visiting Commodores on the VIP boats that they were voted the winners of the best decorated boat on the day. Thank you to all those who participated in the Sail Past and went to the trouble of decorating their boats. I would also like thank Terry for being Trip Leader and planning the day as I was on the VIP boat. Special thanks to Phyl, Frank and Graham for volunteering to work on the BBQ stand and preparing hot dogs to members. Safe boating and hope to see you on the water. Dive Report It has been a very busy couple of months for the dive section. We have made a few changes to the section, including our new Facebook page, which is proving an effective form of communication. In-house training courses Last month John Heckles delivered an informative session which enabled divers to perform basic cleaning of their regulators. This does not negate the importance of regular servicing by a registered technician but it could save time and money and elongate the longevity of your regs by enabling regular cleaning and preventative maintenance. More of these sessions to come.
Club dives We are introducing a series of charter and shore dives during the summer months to enable the section to dive together as a section. The charters will take the form of two dives at Rottnest with lunch on the island and will be at a discounted price for section members.
PADI Scuba Training The section is fortunate to have secured our very own PADI dive instructor. Graham is a fully insured and qualified dive instructor who will be offering heavily discounted courses for section members. Graham can offer anything from Introduction to Scuba, right through to Dive Master plus a number of speciality courses. If you haven’t dived for a while or would just like to refresh your skills then the Re-Activate (refresher course) will be just $90 and will see you back underwater in no time at all. The Open Water course will be offered at $345 which includes: • All theory and PADI registration • Scuba gear and tanks (wetsuit not included) • All pool work • Four open water dives • Personalised tuition (small groups – max four divers per course) • Ongoing support from an active and experienced dive section (which includes your instructor) • Access to a calendar of activities and dive vacations These prices are only available to club members. Club Manager’s Report Firstly I would like to say a big hello to all the members, some of which I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and many I have still to meet. I’m Steve Snell, the new Club Manager. I bring 37 years of hospitality and business experience to the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club, having worked in several places in Australia and throughout Europe over those years. It’s been a busy but enjoyable first couple of months in the job and getting to know the team here. My job is ultimately to bring new business to the Club; weddings, conferences, seminars etc. to maximise the potential of the Club’s facilities, and therefore increase the Club’s funds. In addition I will be responsible for raising our membership numbers, and ensuring we retain valued current memberships, together with improving our Club’s overall appearance. Hopefully you will have noticed a few areas that have been ‘tidied up’ i.e. the patio and carpark. Further improvements are planned in the near future to bring the Club up to date with a fresh new look. The Opening Day on Sunday, 11th October, went really well and I believe a good time was had by all. The children were treated to face painting and a petting zoo this year which went down well, not only with the children, but with the parents too. The weather held out for the sail past, a picture can be viewed on the Social notice-board, and the following formal lunch, with Shaydze of Grey playing in the sunshine to an enthusiastic crowd. I would like to thank all the team who worked especially hard and long hours on the day, and leading up to the event, a lot of planning went in to the day’s success, including a fantastic job in the kitchen by Paula & Debbie. To all those who attended – Thank You.

Takitezy Two Seawind 10 metre Catamaran 1033 OS1 Ian and Jill Younghusband
My History I was born a Seawind 1000 at the Seawind factory in Wollongong south of Sydney New South Wales in 1997 and had a fortunate life entertaining tourists as a charter yacht at Shute Harbour in the Whitsundays. My first 6 years of life was enjoyable and I felt much love and pampered by the charter company who looked after me meticulously. After this I returned to Pittwater north of Sydney closer to my birth place where my new owners did a refit and gave me a new wardrobe .I was now seven and a half years old .Pittwater was a lovely area and I enjoyed my time there. Then along came Ian and Jill in April 2005, they were to foster me for the next ten years. There adventures took me all up the east coast of Australia out of the cold south waters and into lovely warm tropical seas to Cape York before venturing across the Gulf of Carpentaria. It was vary scare as I had never been so far offshore. After 3 days and nights it was a relief to arrive at Gove. But I was to find that this was only the beginning of further adventures to the west. After a small rest it was off to the Wessel islands and across the top of Australia towards Darwin. The urge of my masters sent me to explore north territory waters and the great area of the northern Australia. This truly wonderful area is what I was born for. In Darwin I was excited to find out that my next adventure would be the Kimberly region. This region would be a new experience for me as I had never before sailed in such strong current and tides. This thrilling leg showed that a humble Sydney catamaran can experience a great adventure in rivers surrounded by towering cliffs. I was indeed a lucky catamaran to be in rivers like the Berkley & King George.

This area fascinated me and I vowed I would return someday and visit again. During the voyage my carers introduced me to many sea creatures and I am sure that I recognized some of the friendly whales or cousins that I spotted on my journey. The siting of crocodile and other unfamiliar creatures made me a little apprehensive but I was happy that my captain would not put me in harms way. By now Broome was on the southern horizon and the site of many tourist and charter boats reminded me of my younger years in the charter industry.
Time now for my bows to head south again and keep a close lookout for those large iron ore ships which were much larger than me for I knew that this leg was to take me past Port Hedland and Dampier. I did hope that I would not stay long as I would get very dirty from iron ore dust but I need not have worried as I had a good wash before I left. Dodging the offshore island I snuck out of Dampier at sunset and headed for the Montebello Islands.
I do hope that I won’t get radiation contamination from the atomic bomb testing carried out in the 1950,s.
It was with glee that I met my new masters in October 2015 and I am looking forward to a new family and new adventures.
These are wonderful remote islands. My concerns were unfounded and an enjoyable time was spent in this region. The whales still followed us with their moans, groans and their calls keep me company as I headed towards Exmouth. The sea was getting cooler and the wind turning more south and I knew if I was to head south I would be in for some rugged sailing. On a pleasant evening I left Exmouth to round the cape at slack tide and head for Carnarvon, Sharks Bay then onto Geraldton and Hillarys and arrived at my new home after two and a half years with Ian and Jill. I was now 10 years old. I looked forward to my days of retirement but this was not to be so, I must have please my carers and they gave me a small rest before a refit and I was off again to further adventures south to Geograph Bay and north again to Abrolhos, Sharks Bay and beyond. I was pleased to be again at Sharks Bay and recognized the bays and anchorages that I have previously visited. I yearned to go back to the warm tropical waters of the Kimberley’s and meet the whales I had made friends with previously and by giving my masters an enjoyable time I was able to lure them north once more and so it came about that I was once more heading north to tropical waters. This time it was as far north as horizontal waterfalls north of Broome. I was glad to be back but I was ever mindful of the return journey as I would much prefer the warmer climate. It eventually came to pass that I had to take my masters and I braced myself to the task of heading south back to Hillarys. It is now the winter of 2015 and my masters were unable to take me on long voyages and I am confined to local waters but I do long to be back enjoying the open sea again. I have overheard rumors that I might get a new master.
