Power Boating Hi everyone. As you read this, we would have had Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations and begun the 2014 year. If you’re sick of those normal resolutions of weight loss or new job, you could always promise to take the boat out more, and what better way than to join the power boat section with their regular monthly trips. On Friday December 13, our crew starting heading south toward Mandurah to launch their boats and motor on over to the Quest Apartments who provide pens for boats. A boater’s paradise! Unfortunately our family couldn’t make it down this year due my sister in law having a ‘significant’ birthday on the Saturday but rumours still make their way round. As I hear it, Dave and Andrea struck trouble on the way down with the brakes on their trailer giving way. I understand the ‘Sea Biscuit’ was taken away by tow truck and didn’t make it down. Hope things are okay guys? The next victims were Steve and Dionne Carrier who left Friday morning at 9am and finally reached Mandurah at 4pm after also suffering trailer problems. The Friday night cruise of the canals checking out the lights on display did not let anyone down again and was pretty spectacular, if not a little crowded. The next day saw a run up to the Ravenswood Hotel for lunch but by all accounts it was a bit warm. Santa arrived on Saturday nights and gifts were received – thanks Santa! Sunday saw the crew pack up and head off to the Marina for coffees. Rumour has it that the Water Police had a sign up but with all our ageing eyes, no-one could decipher what was written. Steve Oliver started calling to others on channel 94 if they could work it out and consensus of “slow down” was discussed. Then the police, who monitor channel 94, advised all that the sign was “5 knots” and thanks for telling everyone! Next events are 3 – 5 January – Rottnest stay over 26 January the Sky Show by boat and camp on the river. Regatta No 3 Sunday 19th January at 10.00hrs. Hillarys Yacht Club to host the presentation.
Regatta No 5 Sunday 16th March at 10.00hrs. HYC to host the presentation.
Please note : This means that there will be no February 2014 publication of the Tide. There will be only six Tide Magazines published each year from now on. January, March, May, July, September, and November.
I urge all skippers to enter these regattas in order to gain experience sailing in crowded conditions.
The Sailors are two thirds through their Sailing Calendar,with the Winter Series A and the Early Summer Series B completed. As the handicapping system has proved to be most successful it will be a very close finish for places amongst the competing yachts.

Our December Xmas Dine-in was well attended and a big Thank-you goes to Sue Eldridge, who organised the raffle; the Sailing Section members who donated so generously towards it; Dee Treen who handled the production, booking and selling of the tickets; Monika Mc Ginn who created and shopped cleverly to decorate the tables in an interesting and pleasing style. The Xmas Sailing Raffle had four lucky winners.

Over the middle Summer period sailing is favoured with mild warm conditions. This is an excellent time of the year to try crewing on one of the yachts. Please come to the Club at 8.30 hrs on the days listed for our club races,with plenty of sunscreen, a hat and sun protective clothing and make yourself known to the sailors. Children’s Christmas Party Wasn’t the Children’s Christmas party a fabulous day. Santa arrived courtesy of Sea Rescue with a very fast entry into the channel to avoid the waves. He was then delivered to the club via Ian Younghusband’s beautiful red sports car. All the kids were very patient while Santa gave out their presents which took a bit of time as there were 162 to get through. The bouncy castle was a great success and there were some beautifully painted faces to be seen. The Children all enjoyed their sausage sizzle, ice cream, lollies and drinks. The band was just great “Just4kix” although it would have been nice to see a few people up dancing. Isn’t it just lovely to sit down at the club and enjoy the sunshine, the fantastic view and listen to great music. A really big thank you to all of the helpers on the day and to Santa for making a special trip from the North Pole to the club.
