Commodore Hello Members, It seems this COVID thing has been going on forever, but it was two years ago WA recorded its first COVID-related death, and the subsequent state-wide lockdown effectively closed the Club for 4 months. Since then there has been a steady stream of lockdowns, mandates, restrictions, and through it all our staff and members have demonstrated their readiness to comply, and for that the Club is very grateful. The attitude has been one of defiant compliance; we don’t like it, but we’ll do it, and we’re not going to let it keep us from enjoying our Club. This brings me to the latest mandate; as of February 1st, we are now required to check the vaccination record for all those entering the Club, members, and non-members. The State did not provide any guidance on how to do it, just a strong message that the laws would be enforced. If you’ve been to the Club in the last month, you would have gone through the checking process we’ve put together on short notice. The intent is to see how it works and make changes as needed. Hopefully, the restriction will be eased in the coming months. Half Yearly General Meeting By now you would have received your notice for the Half-Yearly General Meeting, scheduled for March 21st. This meeting will provide the members' updates on the activities and business of the Club since the Annual General meeting last August. The biggest bit of business on our horizon is of course the Ocean Reef Marina Development, and the Management Committee will be presenting recommendations for the future facilities for the members to consider. Please attend, if possible, as choices now will determine the direction of the Club for the next few years. Regarding the future facilities, in our discussions with Development WA and the City of Joondalup, the Club has consistently maintained that the facilities must meet the needs of an expanding membership. This not only applies to a Clubhouse but includes the surrounding open areas, car park and hardstand areas. We will continue to push for more space and the best outcome for the Club. Alfresco Area If you have been down to the Club for an afternoon libation as you supervise the construction of the breakwater, you would have noticed a significant improvement to the alfresco area. Green grass, beanbags, umbrellas, a playground full of kids, and tables full of members have generated a lively but laid-back ambiance. The Reef Bar has been a great addition, and our galley service has turned the area into a huge outdoor banquet room. Next time a staff member walks by, let them know you appreciate their efforts. Responsible Service of Alcohol In Western Australia, the Liquor Control Act establishes the laws related to serving alcohol. As a licensee, the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club is required to comply with this law. Compliance is also required from our General Manager, our Bar Manager, and our bar staff. We provide unequivocal support for our staff when they are obliged to address any issue with a member. Responsibly serving alcohol protects the Club and helps reduce the likelihood that others will cause problems for you, your friends, or your family. We take our RSA duties seriously, as we do our commitment to provide our members a safe and enjoyable Club. Thank you for your cooperation in supporting the staff with these laws. General Manager Hello members, Summer is done for another year, and some of us would be happy with this given we just had the hottest summer ever in WA! We look forward to a cooler Autumn period with some nice warm weather and hopefully not many more heatwaves. Lucky we are on the beach, so we get the Fremantle Doctor most days to cool us off. As per the landscape of the world we now live in, we are facing many challenges once again and need to focus our efforts on the COVID-19 mandated protocols. I want to personally thank everyone, members, staff, committee, non-members, and visitors that showed patience and understanding with the now, “normal” way of life. What are we working on? More events, more variety. Club presentation – playground, paving, painting, lawns, signage etc. Food Offerings – The Bar menu is finally here. This will be available every day that the Galley is open, except Thursday. It is full of all your favourite classics and shared meals. The Burgers and Steak Sandwiches have been very popular. We will also have a Specials Menu most days and the Dinner Menu on Friday night only. We have a new Marketing & Communications Manager, Kym Shephard. Please make her feel welcome. She is doing an amazing job; she has a wealth of experience and lives locally. You can email her at marketingmanager@orssc.asn.au Georgina is adding Events Manager to her Bar Manager role and doing a fantastic job. Paula is doing an amazing job with the large events, more food offerings, and menus. Please make sure you book on Friday nights as the Galley is now at capacity for Friday dinner. Bookings are essential after 6:30pm. If you don’t book you might have to wait longer than normal. You can book on the website. Please thank the staff if you feel that it is warranted. It does go a long way for them to hear it personally. Or even better still write us a review on Facebook and Google, and even add some photos! It helps the club get stronger. BEHAVIOUR AND DRESS CODE 1. Members and guests are to adopt dress and behaviour standards in a way which will not offend other club members, or be in conflict with House Rules. 2. BARE FEET AND TORSOS are unacceptable in any part of the Clubhouse at all times. 3. a. Minimum Dress Standards - Bob Mason's Bar prior to 7pm. Thongs, dry bathers, tank tops, shirts without sleeves. b. Minimum Dress Standards - Bob Mason's Bar after 7pm. Shirt with sleeves, shorts and thongs. (Tank tops, shirts without sleeves, are not permitted, neither are bathers). c. Minimum Dress Standards apart from Special Functions - Lounges, hall and dining areas at all times. Respectable dress; i.e. shirt with sleeves, dress shorts and suitable footwear; e.g. shoes, dress sandals and thongs. (Bathers, tank tops and shirts without sleeves are not permitted). Smart sleeveless dresses or camisole tops are permissible. Members are requested, to, whenever possible, wear smart thongs, (not basic rubbers), after 7pm, especially on the dining evenings of Wednesday and Friday. d. Minimum Dress Standards - Grassed areas at all times. In the interest of safety, no bare feet will be allowed in and around the club premises and boundaries including lawn areas and hardstanding area. Footwear must be worn at all times, this includes children. 4. It is not permissible for members, their guests and also children to wear head gear of any kind in the club premises. Special functions and party head gear is accepted.

New Summer Hours!

During Summer, the galley will be open for lunch from 12pm – 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 4pm – 7.30pm on Sundays for dinner. These new summer hours mean we are open for longer to give you more opportunity to eat and drink at the club while watching those amazing sunsets! The Sunday hours also coincide with Happy Hour from 12pm – 1pm.

Angling Report January Beach Comp The idea of having an award-winning pie from the Pinjarra bakery had my wife Deborah and I, eager to head down south for a bit of a change of scenery (along with the fact that the strong southwest was slightly more favourable than our usual northern spots). With Deb unable to finish any earlier than 9.30pm on Friday, meant it was only the one night on the beach for the weekend and a later than usual start with our toes not hitting the sand until 6am Saturday. The first spot we tried saw us both with undersize King George whiting and a few near misses with Flounder. I bagged a Herring early on then it was onto the next spot. We hit up the Mandurah estuary where it only took me about 6-7 minutes to add a Yellowfin whiting to my tally. The next spot was Dawesville cut where we hoped to catch some Skippy. MORE undersize King George was caught by both of us along with HEAPs of undersize Tarwhine. After about 90 minutes or so we decided it was time to grab that Pie. As good as it was it wasn’t nearly as delicious as the Tony Ale pies we get, worth the drive off the freeway at Beeliar drive if you ever have the time! Afterward we decided it was time to brave those strong winds and head for White Hills highway. The heat was starting to be quite unbearable with the poor Prado just recently losing its air conditioning. We cracked a couple of cold drinks, wound down the windows, and put the foot down on the gas! Although the sea breeze was well and truly blowing, the water was crystal clear. This got the blood pumping through the veins again with the thought of being able to have a set line out, hoping for something heavy. It wasn’t long before I upgraded my Herring and a Tailor. Deb got out of the car and braved the sandstorm, getting a nice Herring herself just before nightfall. The sea breeze was relentless. The sunset was still beautiful and I had a few inquiries on the big rod but nothing that stuck! By about 10.30pm I pulled the rods in and decided to get some shut-eye before trying again in the morning. 5am and my alarm was going off. No need for the head torch as it was already light, Also the wind had buggered off making it a very

enjoyable morning for a fish. I got a few more Herring and then hooked onto a decent Flathead. On the way home I pulled up to some very reefy water where I was pretty certain I would get a Wrasse and I did! We had to detour on the way home as a fellow 4WDer had come unstuck on the narrow section a few KM’s south of the white hills turn off. We drove all the way back and got out at Preston before heading home. I ended up with the 5 species, which was good enough to earn me third place in the men’s and Deb’s one Herring won her the lucky competitor prize! Ricko came second with 7 species including an 880g Skippy and 560g Tailor. Vince Cox won the mens with an impressive 8 species and a total of 105 points! His mixed bag included a gold spot Sweetlips, 566g Tailor and a 355g Herring. In the Ladies, Sue Freeman had another very good weekend winning the ladies with 6 species including a Skippy of 382g and a Tailor of 390g. In the Vets Mick Lock won again with 6 species and 104 points. Locky had a Tailor of 597g, Pike of 148g and even a Black Bream of 358g. In the mini juniors, we had 4 weigh ins this month which is great! Good to see a few more kids joining in! The winner was Toby Weymouth, he ended up with 3 species including a great Tailor of 520g. Excellent work mate! His sister Lucy came second. Buckets was a bit disappointed he didn’t win anything with his 1.6kg Pink Snapper. A great fish though! He was quite generous to give it away to Maree, which might have been the Karma that won him the meat raffle! He didn’t go home empty-handed after all! Well done aha! Looks like a few of the club who ended up in Jurien got stuck into lots of Dart, Whiting, Herring just to name a few of the species. We had 21 anglers weigh in which I’m very pleased about, especially considering how strong the winds were pretty much from 11am Saturday until 11pm that night! Next beach comp is on the 19-20th of February, would be awesome to keep those fishing numbers up again! Tight Lines Robert Meneguz Beach Fishing Captain

Sailing Report I trust everyone had a safe and enjoyable festive season and a warm welcome back for what is shaping up to be an interesting time ahead for us all. Club racing has taken a bit of break over the school holidays but we are now back into the swing of things or at least we are, at the time of me writing this report. The fun has not stopped though, as we had a good representation of ORSSC sailors participating in the Sun City Yacht Club Triathlon was held at Two Rocks in December. It was a great fun day out and this will no doubt continue as an annual event. Since my last report, ORSSC sailors have challenged the sailors from Hillarys Yacht Club in the North Coast Series Regatta on two occasions but with only limited success, in saying that, HYC does have an advantage over ORSSC as they have more boats entered into the competition. Nevertheless, ORSSC can stand proud in mixing it up with the much larger boats from Hillarys and the new format has offered up some very exciting racing action for all.

A welcome addition to the ORSSC fleet is Ian Conboy and his partners on Oceans 11, an Austral Clubman 8 trailer sailer. Ian reports that they had a good first race in the regatta but they came unstuck during the second race due to losing a halyard and the front hatch. On a side note, if ORSSC keep attracting the Clubman’s, we may even have enough of them to start their own class!

Setting up at Two Rocks (Erin)

Paul Phipps has worked his magic with the Race Starting System such that it has now become somewhat of an automated process, therefore, relieving some of the pressure off the race management team at the race start. This is also very beneficial for the skippers who can now get their pre-start plans rolling with some certainty in the knowledge that the race will actually start on time. I would now like to take this opportunity, and indeed from all the sailors at ORSSC past and present, to thank Dee Treen for her valued contribution to the Race Management team over many, many years. Dee has decided to step down from her role and we wish her all the very best for her future. I imagine there might be some serious caravanning trips on Dee and Ken’s agenda going forward. If any members wish to try sailing, please don’t hesitate to either contact me or Scott Forrest our Sailing Captain and we will do our best to find you a boat to crew on. Power Boat Report Happy New Year everyone, With summer now well and truly here the boating section has been making good use of the fantastic weather and getting out onto the water! Mandurah Christmas Lights 3rd-5th December The usual weekend stay at C Mandurah (formally the Quest) was planned this year to take place on 3rd-5th Dec, most of the 18 section members attending arrived early in the day and spent the Friday afternoon chilling in the pool/Spa area before enjoying a bar b in the eve. As the sun went down the rest of the crew arrive including 9 from the sailing section on a very flash-looking ski boat! We set off around 8.00pm to complete the usual tour of the canals, we were all very impressed by the quality of this year’s lights but not so with the quality of some of the local tour company’s skippers! Saturday morning started with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the canals followed by the further arrival of another boat as the Hawkers turned up, Corrie and Mary our Day passengers arrive just before 10.00am and we headed out onto the ocean with a light easterly blowing and near-perfect conditions for the trip down to Dawesville, back in the Dawesville Cut and then across the Peel inlet and on up the Murry River to Jetty’s Pub for lunch where we were joined by Jan & Graham, everyone enjoyed a lovely lunch even if some had to wait a while for it to turn up. As we sat there cooking under the sunshades outside in the pub garden, the sea breeze came in and the wind swung around to a southwesterly cooling things down but making the trip back a little choppy. Back at the Quest, the evening started with a few

well-deserved beverages and then a visit from Santa with the usual Kris-Kringle. Sunday morning was another joint effort with a group breakfast before we said our goodbyes! A Great Weekend enjoyed by all who attended. Dive Report Hi everyone, The dive section had an excellent dive trip down to Busselton back in December, 50 members from the dive section made the trip down to Legacy house for the weekend. 22 of 50 members travelled down on Thursday to get an early start to the weekend, after settling into our accommodation that evening we all went to Amelia Park restaurant - a lovely way to start the weekend. On Friday it was time for the food shopping for the Saturday night roast dinner and Sunday recovery breakfast. As the rest of the members made their way down on Friday a few members went to a local winery for lunch and a few of us did some reconnaissance to the marina so we knew the way the next day for the charter thank god for GPS and not my directions. But the main reason for the weekend other than drinking and eating was diving on the HMAS Swan. We had 12 divers for the double dive on the Swan wreck which lays in 30 meters of water off the coast of Dunsborough. We boarded the Swan Dive Charter at 8am for the 50-minute cruise across geographies bay to the dive site. The dive boat can take 22 divers so with our 12, it left room for 10 more paying passengers of which 2 were free divers. I don’t know what they thought as they watched 12 supreme athletic divers trying to get geared up with yells of can you zip me up is my air turned on can you pass me my weights and so on but I

am sure they are still talking about that dive. The dives were great as every dive is we had two dives on the swan we all buddied up and enjoyed some great conditions and exploring the wreck. After the dive, it was back to Legacy to finish preparing the food for the roast dinner. The theme this year was Hawaiian and everyone got into the theme with bright coloured Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts. The roast dinner went down a treat enjoyed by everyone, I would like to thank everyone who helped out with preparation and cleaning up - many hands made light work. The recovery breakfast on Sunday of bacon eggs was a treat. I would like to thank Rick and Tricia Green for organising our stay at Legacy House and thank you to Graham Hindley for organising the dive charter. On Saturday 22nd January Dave Baronet, Graham Hindley and Rob Addams organised a dive trip to Rottnest Island with excellent weather and good dive conditions word has it they all had a great day. Club Events The Club Events have been a roaring success! There is a mountain of work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure everyone has a great experience. All the staff involved and a special thanks to the members that help us set up on the big days; Paul, Silvio, Terry and Dave have been a huge help. We have one of, if not the best venue locations in WA. With sweeping ocean views, large lawns, kids’ playground and multiple rooms and bars. With the challenges around Covid life and staffing shortages, we are very lucky to have been able to host some very popular events. We are showcasing some of the world’s best holiday/eating destinations to give our members a chance to travel without getting on an aeroplane. We are selling out tickets at every event, so please get in quick so you don’t miss out. Past Events NYE was a great success. The decorations and entertainment were a treat, and we danced the night away and into the countdown. Australia Day was another great day with the returning popular Dr Bogus always getting the dance floor filled with good vibes. Mexico By The Sea: Another great international flavour we are showcasing at the Club.
