A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Greetings! Welcome to Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

It is important to include productions in our Orpheum Broadway Season that are suitable for the entire family, like the one you are seeing today. Inviting young people to a show is the best way to get them immersed in the magic of the theatre.

It is also how we build an audience for the future. Those of us who work in this industry have a responsibility to ensure there will always be people who want to attend Broadway musicals. Introducing a child to a show like Beauty and the Beast makes an indelible impression on them and excites them to return.

The benefits for those of us who bring children to the theatre include the sparkle we see in their eyes, the laughter they share without hesitation, and their recitation of the songs they heard on the ride home. And yet, there is more than that.

You see, it is not just the young person who benefits from an early introduction to the arts. The adult who introduces them to the theatre will also reap rewards.

My mother passed recently. I was blessed that she introduced me to live theatre at a very young age. She encouraged my participation throughout my adolescence. And I believe she was proud of my success in later life.

But what I am most grateful for is that we were able to attend the theatre together for over 60 years. Even as she aged, she would take the bus to Chicago when I lived there, and we would go to a show. After Veronica and I moved to Memphis, she would visit and we would take her to a performance at the Orpheum. Or Playhouse. Or Theatre Memphis. Theatre was our bond. The ‘thing’ we did together.

I am certain she derived pleasure from those shared experiences throughout her life. I know I did.

If you brought a young person with you today, I thank you. I hope you buy them a treat at the concession stand, or a stuffed animal from the merchandise vendor.

Okay, that might have been shameless on my part. But what I mean to say is – do whatever it takes for them to enjoy the performance to its fullest. If you do, you will have a companion to go to the theatre with you for a very long time!

The Pickler Companies Broadway Club is the Orpheum’s private lounge offering light snacks, a dedicated bar, and private restrooms. Access during Broadway Season shows is available with a President’s Club level donation.

THE BALCONY PROJECT

Uncover the poignant legacy of Memphis, where the theater’s Black-Only balcony entrance once stood. The Balcony Project is free and open to the public every Monday and Saturday for two hours each day.

PARKING

Both the Downtown Mobility Center and the MLGW Garage are steps from the Orpheum Theatre and offer reserved parking in advance. There are also several other lots, garages, and street parking near the Theatre.

Dr. Neal S. Beckford

Scott Beatty is the CEO of Absolute Storage Management and has over 25 years of selfstorage industry experience. Scott has spent the past 20 years working alongside Michael Haugh and Matt Bailey and an incredible team to grow Absolute to over 140 locations in 20 states.

Prior to joining Absolute in 2003, Scott spent eight years in financial operations and forecasting/budgeting, including four years as a financial executive at Storage USA. His experience includes the development of single - year property budgets along with l ongrange strategic and financial plans for large scale companies. During his self - storage career with Storage USA, Scott oversaw and managed the annual budgeting and forecasting responsibilities for over 400 properties, along with the creation, generation , and analysis of monthly property financial reports.

Scott holds a BS in finance from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. Scott is actively involved with the University of Memphis Fogelman College of Business as a mentor in its Memphis Institute for Leadership Education (MILE ) program which annually pairs up business executives with elite undergraduates for mentoring and leadership opportunities. Scott is also an active member of Vistage since 2019, an international CEO coaching and peer advisory organization.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

ANGELA LANSBURY (Voice of the Prologue Narrator) enjoyed a career spanning almost 75 years in film, stage and television. Her numerous Broadway credits include Mame (Tony Award®), Dear World (Tony Award®), Gypsy (Tony Award®), Sweeney Todd (Tony Award®) and Blithe Spirit (Tony Award®). She appeared in over 60 motion pictures including Gaslight (Academy Award® Nomination), The Portrait of Dorian Gray (Academy Award® Nomination) and The Manchurian Candidate (Academy Award® Nomination). In 1991 she was the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. She made television history starring as Jessica Fletcher on “Murder, She Wrote,” the longest-running detective drama series in TV history, winning four of her six Golden Globe® Awards. In 2013 she was awarded an Oscar® for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. She was named a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Lansbury passed away peacefully in 2022 at age 96.

KYRA BELLE JOHNSON (Belle) is honored to bring this magical story back to the stage. She previously toured as Sophie in the National Tour of Mamma Mia! TV/Film Credits: Damned If You Do, Role Play, and “FBI.” Proud alumna of Texas State’s BFA Musical Theatre Program. Huge thanks to DGRW and Disney for making this dream come true. LINDA WOOLVERTON (Book). Linda Woolverton’s first animated feature, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/ Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award®. Woolverton cowrote the screenplay for The Lion King animated feature, rewrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and contributed to the animated feature Mulan. She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Woolverton was also awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Beauty and the Beast for Best New Musical in the UK. Beauty and the Beast ran in New York between 1994 and 2007, becoming the sixth longest running show in Broadway history. Woolverton also wrote the Book for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Musical Aida which ran for five years at the Palace. Woolverton’s script for Alice in Wonderland (2010), directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, grossed over one billion dollars and she became the first female screenwriter with a sole credit on a billion-dollar film. From there she wrote the screenplay for Disney’s Maleficent (2014) starring Angelina Jolie which became a worldwide success. HOWARD ASHMAN ( Lyricist ) is best known as the pivotal creative mind behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul…”). Ashman’s first love was theatre. He was a founder of Off Off-Broadway’s renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed the classic musical Little Shop of Horrors as well as God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater (both music by Alan Menken). A new cast recording of Rosewater is available from Sh-K-Boom records. In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses. A documentary about Ashman’s life titled HOWARD has received great acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of the man and the artist. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. DANNY TROOB (Orchestrator). Danny’s career as a musician includes composing, orchestrating and conducting. Some early credits include Pacific Overtures, The Baker’s Wife (both shows’ dance music), Big River (music supervision, Drama Desk Award winner). Danny orchestrated the animated features Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas – where he also conducted the score – and wrote and conducted the scores to Disney’s The Little Mermaid 2 and Lady and The Tramp 2.
