& Juliet

Page 1

NOVEMBER 25 - 30, 2025 • ORPHEUM THEATRE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

The most famous songwriter you probably never heard of before today.

That is what you can say about Max Martin, who wrote the songs contained in the musical & Juliet

Max Martin is the songwriter/producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century. He has written over 100 hit songs, including twenty-five that rose to the top of the charts!

He has won five Grammy Awards, and has been nominated for an Academy Award, as well as two Golden Globes.

However, if you did not come of age in the late 1990s and early 2000s, you may not have heard his name before reading this message.

But you have heard his music. When you watch & Juliet today, you will recognize many of the songs in the show. They were all written by Martin.

The genre of jukebox musicals (using existing songs to tell a story, often from one artist or band) has exploded since the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! first hit the stage in 1999. Since then, Broadway has seen a succession of jukebox musical hits like Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons), Movin’ Out (Billy Joel), Ain’t Too Proud (The Temptations), and Million Dollar Quartet (if I have to tell you, you are not from Memphis).

& Juliet is one in a long string of these shows to make waves in New York City and on tour. But it may be the first to weave William Shakespeare into the narrative. That is what makes it so fun – the imaginary tale of what would have happened had Juliet made a different choice at the end of the Shakespeare play.

Jukebox musicals are here to stay in the theatrical canon, I believe. They are enormously popular, and ticket-buyers love to hear the first strains of a song they know by heart coming from the stage. I bet many of you will feel that way this evening.

And they can even be educational. They can teach you about artists you have never heard of before – like Max Martin.

Enjoy his music at this performance.

Thanks for being here!
