FIELD TRIP GUIDE August 2026 - July 2027

DISCOVERY LABS Our Educator-led Discovery Labs offer students an opportunity to learn through inquiry-based activities. Discovery Labs have been carefully designed to meet applicable Florida State Standards. Field Trip groups will be divided as necessary to fit into Discovery Lab spaces (max 32 students per class). Discovery Labs enhance your experience by providing a special lab tailored to a specific science or STEM topic.

PRESCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN Little Engineers Inspired by Giulia Belloni’s tale Anything Is Possible, students will transform from readers into real-world problem solvers! Working in collaborative small teams, children will learn the core principles of the Engineering Design Process. Their mission is to design, build, and test a creative solution to the central conflict in the story and to realize that anything truly is possible! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 9: Changes in Matter; Big Idea 12: Motion of Objects; Computer Science Standard 1: Communication and Collaboration

Bold Bodies Step into our lab to embark on a top-secret mission! Designed to transform the youngest scientist into detectives on a quest to solve the ultimate mystery: How do our bodies explore the world? Equipped with scientific curiosity and the power of their senses, will the junior sleuths have what it takes to crack the case? Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 14: Organization and Development of Living Organisms

GRADES 1 – 2 Trampoline Engineering In this hands-on STEM challenge, you’ll team up and use the power of math and science to conquer a high-flying goal. Using the official Engineering Design Process, your mission is to collaborate, design, and build a trampoline bed capable of launching a ball 50cm or higher into the air. Teamwork, creativity and a little physics are all it takes to make your ideas bounce! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 3: The Role of Theories, Laws, Hypotheses; Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy; Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer and Transformations; Big Idea 12: Motion of Objects

States of Matter Students will explore the three states of matter- solids, liquids, and gases. Investigate the physical properties of each state and discover how matter changes and behaves. This lab is perfect for curious minds ready to test, observe, and learn the science behind every-day phenomena. Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 12: Motion of Objects; Big Idea 13: Forces and Changes in Motion

FIELD TRIP GUIDE August 2026 - July 2027 GRADES 3 – 5 Roller Coaster Physics Step into the shoes of a theme park engineer! In this course, students will investigate how the opposing forces of gravity and friction directly dictate a coaster’s motion and speed. As the “car” races down drops and through loops, students will discover first-hand how potential energy transforms into kinetic energy and begin to see physics in action! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 3: The Role of Theories, Laws, Hypotheses, and Models; Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time; Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy; Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer and Transformation; Big Idea 12: Motion of Objects; Big Idea 13: Forces and Changes in Motion

Hurricane Hazards Discover the science behind hurricane formation and the dramatic ways that these storms reshape our coastlines. Analyze the balance between nature-based and engineered solutions to combat weathering and erosion. Create a structure capable of withstanding hurricane-force winds and see if it will stand up to the challenge! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge; Big Idea 3: The Role of Theories, Laws, Hypotheses; Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time; Big Idea 6: Earth Structures; Big Idea 7: Earth Systems and Patterns; Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy; Big Idea 11: Forms of Energy; Big Idea 17: Interdependence

Survival STEM You’ve survived a shipwreck and now it’s time to thrive! In this Engineering Design Challenge, students must use the powers of science and measurement to build a new life from scratch. Harness electricity and signal for help by designing functional circuits and using precise measurements to construct a sturdy, element-proof shelter. Become civil and electrical engineers and tackle this real-world scenario. Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 9: Forms of Energy; Big Idea 17: Interdependence

GRADES 6 – 12 Forensics Step behind the yellow tape and dive into the world of forensic science! Students will learn how to make sharp observations, gather critical clues, and analyze evidence just like real-world investigators. Use logic, deductive reasoning, and science to put the pieces together and crack the case! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 9: Changes in Matter; Body of Knowledge: Nature of Science

Lasers: Museum Heist Design, create, and test a system that will protect priceless museum artifacts from a daring heist. Using lasers, mirrors, and prisms, apply the principles of geometry and light reflection to design the ultimate security grid that can be used to safeguard history! Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science; Big Idea 3: The Role of Theories, Laws, Hypotheses, and Models; Big Idea 4: Science and Society; Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter; Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy; Strand MA.6.GR: Geometric Reasoning
